Evidence for the rare decay B+→Λˉpμ+μ−B^{+} \to \bar Λp μ^{+} μ^{-}

A search for the rare decay B+→Λˉpμ+μ−B^{+} \to \bar Λp μ^{+} μ^{-} is performed using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of s=13\sqrt{s}= 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1^-1. An excess of events is found with respect to the background-only expectation, with a signal significance of 3.5 standard deviations, in the low invariant-mass region of m(Λˉp)<2.8m(\bar Λp)<2.8 GeV/c2c^2. The branching fraction is measured to be Blow(B+→Λˉpμ+μ−)=(1.70−0.56+0.65(stat)±0.17(syst)±0.14(ext))×10−8{\cal B}_{\rm low}({B^{+}}\to {\bar Λp μ^{+} μ^{-}})=\left(1.70 ^{+0.65}_{-0.56}(\rm stat) \pm 0.17(\rm syst) \pm 0.14(\rm ext)\right) \times 10^{-8}, where the last uncertainty is due to external inputs on B(B+→J/ψΛˉp)×B(J/ψ→μ+μ−){\cal B}(B^+\to{J/ψ\bar Λp})\times {\cal B}({J/ψ}\to{μ^+μ^-}). With no significant signal observed in the high m(Λˉp)m(\bar Λp) region above 2.8 GeV/c2c^2, an upper limit is set to be Bhigh(B+→Λˉpμ+μ−)<2.8 (3.7)×10−9{\cal B}_{\rm high}(B^{+}\to {\bar Λp μ^{+} μ^{-}})<2.8\,(3.7) \times 10^{-9} at the 90%90\% (95%95\%) confidence level.

Measurement of transverse ΛΛ and Λˉ\barΛ hyperon polarization in ppPb collisions at sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02 TeV

The transverse polarization of ΛΛ and Λˉ\barΛ hyperons is measured in ppPb collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.025.02 TeV. The polarization is averaged over hyperon transverse momentum in the ranges 0.15<pT<6.000.15 < p_{T} < 6.00 GeV/cc, and Feynman-xx in the ranges 0.005<xF<0.0400.005 < x_{F} < 0.040 (forward region) and −0.10<xF<−0.01-0.10 < x_{F} < -0.01 (backward region) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The transverse polarization is found to be compatible with zero for both ΛΛ and Λˉ\barΛ hyperons. The results are also measured as a function of pTp_{T} and xFx_{F} with no significant dependence on these variables observed. The results are compared with previous experimental measurements at different center-of-mass energies and collision environments.

Study of charm mixing and CP violation with D0→K±π∓π±π∓D^0\to K^\pmπ^\mpπ^\pmπ^\mp decays

A study of charm mixing and CP violation in D0→K±π∓π±π∓D^0\to K^\pmπ^\mpπ^\pmπ^\mp decays is performed using data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions from 2015 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6fb−1\text{fb}^{-1}. The ratio of promptly produced D0→K+π−π+π−D^0\to K^+π^- π^+π^- to D0→K−π+π−π+D^0\to K^-π^+ π^-π^+ decay rates is measured as a function of D0D^0 decay time, both inclusive over phase space and in bins of phase space. Taking external inputs for the D0−D‾0D^0 -\overline{D}^0 mixing parameters xx and yy allows constraints to be obtained on the hadronic parameters of the charm decay. When combined with previous measurements from charm-threshold experiments and at LHCb, improved knowledge is obtained for these parameters, which is valuable for studies of the angle γγ of the Unitarity Triangle. An alternative analysis is also performed, in which external inputs are taken for the hadronic parameters, and the mixing parameters are determined, including ΔxΔx and ΔyΔy, which are nonzero in the presence of CP violation. It is found that x=(0.85−0.24+0.15)%x=\left(0.85^{+0.15}_{-0.24}\right)\%, y=(0.21+0.29−0.27)%y=\left( 0.21^{+0.29}{-0.27} \right)\%, Δx=(−0.02±0.04)%Δx=\left( -0.02\pm {0.04} \right)\% and Δy=(0.02−0.03+0.04)%Δy=\left( 0.02^{+0.04}_{-0.03} \right)\%. These results are consistent with previous measurements and the hypothesis of CP conservation.

Coherent photoproduction of ρ0,ωρ^0, ω and excited vector mesons in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions

The invariant-mass distribution for the coherent photoproduction of dipions in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions is measured using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 224.6±9.6μ224.6 \pm 9.6 μb−1^{-1}, collected by the LHCb experiment in 2018 at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02 TeV. In the mass range from 400 to 1200 MeV, the results are consistent with previous experiments, with the spectrum dominated by the ρ0ρ^0 meson, which interferes with a nonresonant component, together with a smaller ωω meson contribution. In an extended mass range up to 2300 MeV, models previously used do not fit the data and a consistent description requires the introduction of two resonances at masses of 1350±201350\pm20 MeV and 1790±201790\pm20 MeV with widths of about 300 MeV. The cross-section for each meson is measured differentially in twelve bins of rapidity from 2.05 to 4.90. The ρ0ρ^0 cross-section increases with rapidity from about 400 to 600 mb and is measured with a typical precision of 8\%, while the cross-section times branching fraction for the ω,ρ′ω,ρ^\prime and ρ′′ρ^{\prime\prime}, with the statistical precision of the data, do not have a pronounced rapidity dependence and are between 0.5 and 1.5 mb, with uncertainties up to 30\%. A large nuclear suppression is observed for the ρ0ρ^0 meson compared to expectations based on photoproduction on the proton that use the impulse approximation. Significant suppression is also observed compared to that predicted by elastic scattering described in the Glauber approach, or with the addition of inelastic scattering in a Gribov--Glauber model.

Epitaxial NaxCoO2 Thin Films via Molecular-Beam Epitaxy and Topotactic Transformation: a Model System for Sodium Intercalation

Renewable energy sources such as solar and wind are critical to combatting global warming. Nevertheless, their intermittent energy generation requires the development of large-scale grid energy storage, in contrast to the on-demand generation of coal-based power plants. Sodium-ion batteries offer a promising potential technology, yet because sodium ions are larger than lithium ions, sodium-ion intercalation results in more drastic structural rearrangements. An improved understanding of structural dynamics and ionic diffusion pathways is crucial to developing more durable sodium-ion batteries. Here we synthesize epitaxial NaxCoO2 by using molecular-beam epitaxy and topotactic transformation. In the synthesized epitaxial films, the CoO2 layers are canted with respect to the film surface, allowing electrochemical extraction of sodium ions, which we confirm via ex-situ x-ray diffraction. We anticipate the epitaxial thin films reported here to enable future operando studies of interfaces, subtle lattice distortions, and microstructure during electrochemical cycling.

Measurement of ϕϕ-meson production in Cu++Au at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV and U++U at sNN=193\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193 GeV

The PHENIX experiment reports systematic measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider of ϕϕ-meson production in asymmetric Cu++Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV and in U++U collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193 GeV. Measurements were performed via the ϕ→K+K−ϕ\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-} decay channel at midrapidity ∣η∣<0.35|η|<0.35. Features of ϕϕ-meson production measured in Cu++Cu, Cu++Au, Au++Au, and U++U collisions were found to not depend on the collision geometry, which was expected because the yields are averaged over the azimuthal angle and follow the expected scaling with nuclear-overlap size. The elliptic flow of the ϕϕ meson in Cu++Au, Au++Au, and U++U collisions scales with second-order-participant eccentricity and the length scale of the nuclear-overlap region (estimated with the number of participating nucleons). At moderate pTp_T, ϕϕ-meson production measured in Cu++Au and U++U collisions is consistent with coalescence-model predictions, whereas at high pTp_T the production is in agreement with expectations for in-medium energy loss of parent partons prior to their fragmentation. The elliptic flow for ϕϕ mesons measured in Cu++Au and U++U collisions is well described by a (2+1)D viscous-hydrodynamic model with specific-shear viscosity η/s=1/4πη/s=1/4π.

J/ψJ/ψ photo-production in Pb-Pb peripheral collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5 TeV

The photo-production of J/ψJ/ψ mesons at low transverse momentum is studied in peripheral lead-lead collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 210 μb−1\rm{μb}^{-1}. The J/ψJ/ψ candidates are reconstructed through the prompt decay into two muons of opposite charge in the rapidity region of 2.0<y<4.52.0<y<4.5. The results significantly improve previous measurements and are compared to the latest theoretical prediction.

Analysis of neutral BB-meson decays into two muons

Branching fraction and effective lifetime measurements of the rare decay Bs0→μ+μ−B^0_s\toμ^+μ^- and searches for the decays B0→μ+μ−B^0\toμ^+μ^- and Bs0→μ+μ−γB^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ are reported using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 77 TeV, 88 TeV and 1313 TeV, corresponding to a luminosity of 99 fb−1^{-1}. The branching fraction B(Bs0→μ+μ−)=(3.09−0.43−0.11+0.46+0.15)×10−9{\mathcal{B}}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=\left(3.09^{+0.46+0.15}_{-0.43-0.11}\right)\times 10^{-9} and the effective lifetime τ(Bs0→μ+μ−)=(2.07±0.29±0.03)τ(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=(2.07\pm 0.29\pm 0.03) are measured, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. No significant signal for B0→μ+μ−B^0\toμ^+μ^- and Bs0→μ+μ−γB^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ decays is found and upper limits B(B0→μ+μ−)<2.6×10−10\mathcal{B}(B^0\toμ^+μ^-)<2.6\times 10^{-10} and B(Bs0→μ+μ−γ)<2.0×10−9\mathcal{B}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ)<2.0\times 10^{-9} at the 95% CL are determined, where the latter is limited to the range mμμ>4.9m_{μμ} > 4.9 GeV/c2/c^2. The results are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations.

Angular analysis of D0→π+π−μ+μ−D^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^- and D0→K+K−μ+μ−D^0 \to K^+K^-μ^+μ^- decays and search for CPCP violation

The first full angular analysis and an updated measurement of the decay-rate CPCP asymmetry of the D0→π+π−μ+μ−D^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^- and D0→K+K−μ+μ−D^0 \to K^+K^-μ^+μ^- decays are reported. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1}. The full set of CPCP-averaged angular observables and their CPCP asymmetries are measured as a function of the dimuon invariant mass. The results are consistent with expectations from the standard model and with CPCP symmetry.

Constraints on the CKM angle γγ from B±→Dh±B^\pm\to Dh^\pm decays using D→h±h′∓π0D\rightarrow h^\pm h^{\prime\mp}π^0 final states

A data sample collected with the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1} is used to measure eleven CPCP violation observables in B±→Dh±B^\pm\to Dh^\pm decays, where hh is either a kaon or a pion. The neutral DD meson decay is reconstructed in the three-body final states: K±π∓π0K^\pmπ^\mpπ^0}; π+π−π0π^+π^-π^0; K+K−π0K^+K^-π^0 and the suppressed π±K∓π0π^\pm K^\mpπ^0 combination. The mode where a large CPCP asymmetry is expected, B±→[π±K∓π0]DK±B^\pm\to [π^\pm K^\mpπ^0]_DK^\pm, is observed with a significance greater than seven standard deviations. The ratio of the partial width of this mode relative to that of the favoured mode, B±→[K±π∓π0]DK±B^\pm\to [K^\pmπ^\mpπ^0]_D K^\pm, is RADS(K)=(1.27±0.16±0.02)×10−2R_{{\rm ADS}(K)} = (1.27\pm0.16\pm0.02)\times 10^{-2}. Evidence for a large CPCP asymmetry is also seen: AADS(K)=−0.38±0.12±0.02A_{{\rm ADS}(K)} = -0.38\pm0.12\pm0.02. Constraints on the CKM angle γγ are calculated from the eleven reported observables.

First measurement of the Z→μ+μ−Z\rightarrow μ^+ μ^- angular coefficients in the forward region of pppp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV

The first study of the angular distribution of μ+μ−μ^+ μ^- pairs produced in the forward rapidity region via the Drell-Yan reaction pp→γ∗/Z+X→l+l−+Xpp \rightarrow γ^{*}/Z +X \rightarrow l^+ l^- + X is presented, using data collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 fb−1\rm{fb}^{-1}. The coefficients of the five leading terms in the angular distribution are determined as a function of the dimuon transverse momentum and rapidity. The results are compared to various theoretical predictions of the ZZ-boson production mechanism and can also be used to probe transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions within the proton.

Identification of charm jets at LHCb

The identification of charm jets is achieved at LHCb for data collected in 2015-2018 using a method based on the properties of displaced vertices reconstructed and matched with jets. The performance of this method is determined using a dijet calibration dataset recorded by the LHCb detector and selected such that the jets are unbiased in quantities used in the tagging algorithm. The charm-tagging efficiency is reported as a function of the transverse momentum of the jet. The measured efficiencies are compared to those obtained from simulation and found to be in good agreement.

Kinematic dependence of azimuthal anisotropies in pp++Au, dd++Au, 3^3He+Au at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 200 GeV

There is strong evidence for the formation of small droplets of quark-gluon plasma in p/d/3p/d/^{3}He+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and in pp+pp/Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. In particular, the analysis of data at RHIC for different geometries obtained by varying the projectile size and shape has proven insightful. In the present analysis, we find excellent agreement with the previously published PHENIX at RHIC results on elliptical and triangular flow with an independent analysis via the two-particle correlation method, which has quite different systematic uncertainties and an independent code base. In addition, the results are extended to other detector combinations with different kinematic (pseudorapidity) coverage. These results provide additional constraints on contributions from nonflow and longitudinal decorrelations.

Measurement of χc1(3872)χ_{c1}(3872) production in proton-proton collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 and 1313 TeV

The production cross-section of the χc1(3872)χ_{c1}(3872) state relative to the ψ(2S)ψ(2S) meson is measured using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of s=8\sqrt{s}=8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 2.0 and 5.4 fb−1^{-1}, respectively. The two mesons are reconstructed in the J/ψπ+π−J/ψπ^{+}π^{-} final state. The ratios of the prompt and nonprompt χc1(3872)χ_{c1}(3872) to ψ(2S)ψ(2S) production cross-sections are measured as a function of transverse momentum, pTp_{\rm T}, and rapidity, yy, in the kinematic range 4<pT<204 < p_{\rm T} < 20 GeV/cc and 2.0<y<4.52.0 < y < 4.5. The prompt ratio is found to increase with pTp_{\rm T} independently of yy. The double-differential cross-section ratio of χc1(3872)χ_{c1}(3872) relative to ψ(2S)ψ(2S) mesons between 13 and 8 TeV is also measured for the prompt component and observed to be consistent with unity, independent of pTp_{\rm T} and centre-of-mass energy.

Measurement of ψ(2S)ψ(2S) nuclear modification at backward and forward rapidity in pp++pp, pp++Al, and pp++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV

Suppression of the J/ψJ/ψ nuclear-modification factor has been seen as a trademark signature of final-state effects in large collision systems for decades. In small systems, the nuclear modification was attributed to cold-nuclear-matter effects until the observation of strong differential suppression of the ψ(2S)ψ(2S) state in p/dp/d++AA collisions suggested the presence of final-state effects. Results of J/ψJ/ψ and ψ(2S)ψ(2S) measurements in the dimuon decay channel are presented here for pp++pp, pp++Al, and pp++Au collision systems at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. The results are predominantly shown in the form of the nuclear-modification factor, RpAR_{pA}, the ratio of the ψ(2S)ψ(2S) invariant yield per nucleon-nucleon collision in collisions of proton on target nucleus to that in pp++pp collisions. Measurements of the J/ψJ/ψ and ψ(2S)ψ(2S) nuclear-modification factor are compared with shadowing and transport-model predictions, as well as to complementary measurements at Large-Hadron-Collider energies.

Measurement of the lifetimes of promptly produced Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} and Ξc0Ξ^{0}_{c} baryons

A measurement of the lifetimes of the Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} and Ξc0Ξ^{0}_{c} baryons is reported using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV13\text{ TeV}, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−15.4\text{ fb}^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. The Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} and Ξc0Ξ^{0}_{c} baryons are produced directly from proton interactions and reconstructed in the pK−K−π+pK^{-}K^{-}π^{+} final state. The Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} lifetime is measured to be 276.5±13.4±4.4±0.7 fs276.5\pm13.4\pm4.4\pm0.7\text{ fs}, and the Ξc0Ξ^{0}_{c} lifetime is measured to be 148.0±2.3±2.2±0.2 fs148.0\pm2.3\pm2.2\pm0.2\text{ fs}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to the uncertainty on the D0D^{0} lifetime. These results confirm previous LHCb measurements based on semileptonic beauty-hadron decays, which disagree with earlier results of a four times shorter Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} lifetime, and provide the single most precise measurement of the Ωc0Ω^{0}_{c} lifetime.

Measurement of the nuclear modification factor and prompt charged particle production in pPbp\mathrm{Pb} and pppp collisions at sNN=5 TeV\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle\mathrm{NN}}}=5\,\mathrm{TeV}

The production of prompt charged particles in proton-lead collisions and in proton-proton collisions at the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy sNN=5 TeV{\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle\mathrm{NN}}}=5\,\mathrm{TeV}} is studied at LHCb as a function of pseudorapidity (ηη) and transverse momentum (pTp_{\mathrm{T}}) with respect to the proton beam direction. The nuclear modification factor for charged particles is determined as a function of ηη between −4.8<η<−2.5{-4.8<η<-2.5} (backward region) and 2.0<η<4.8{2.0<η<4.8} (forward region), and pTp_{\mathrm{T}} between 0.2<pT<8.0 GeV/c{0.2<p_{\mathrm{T}}<8.0\,\mathrm{GeV}/c}. The results show a suppression of charged particle production in proton-lead collisions relative to proton-proton collisions in the forward region and an enhancement in the backward region for pTp_{\mathrm{T}} larger than 1.5 GeV/c1.5\,\mathrm{GeV}/c. This measurement constrains nuclear PDFs and saturation models at previously unexplored values of the parton momentum fraction down to 10−610^{-6}.

The photon polarization is measured to be αγ=0.82 − 0.26 − 0.13 + 0.17 + 0.04α_γ= 0.82^{\,+\,0.17\,+\,0.04}_{\,-\,0.26\,-\,0.13}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This result is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction and previous measurements in b-meson decays. Charge-parity breaking effects are studied for the first time in this observable and found to be consistent with CPCP symmetry.

Measurement of the W boson mass

The WW boson mass is measured using proton-proton collision data at s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 fb−1^{-1} recorded during 2016 by the LHCb experiment. With a simultaneous fit of the muon q/pTq/p_T distribution of a sample of W→μνW \to μν decays and the ϕ∗ϕ^* distribution of a sample of Z→μμZ\toμμ decays the WW boson mass is determined to be \begin{equation*} m_{W} = 80354 \pm 23_{\rm stat} \pm 10_{\rm exp} \pm 17_{\rm theory} \pm 9_{\rm PDF}~\mathrm{MeV}, \end{equation*} where uncertainties correspond to contributions from statistical, experimental systematic, theoretical and parton distribution function sources. This is an average of results based on three recent global parton distribution function sets. The measurement agrees well with the prediction of the global electroweak fit and with previous measurements.

Observation of an exotic narrow doubly charmed tetraquark

Conventional hadronic matter consists of baryons and mesons made of three quarks and quark-antiquark pairs, respectively. The observation of a new type of hadronic state, a doubly charmed tetraquark containing two charm quarks, an anti-uu and an anti-dd quark, is reported using data collected by the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. This exotic state with a mass of about 3875 MeV/c2/c^2 manifests itself as a narrow peak in the mass spectrum of D0D0π+D^0D^0π^+ mesons just below the D∗+D0D^{*+}D^0 mass threshold. The near threshold mass together with a strikingly narrow width reveals the resonance nature of the state.

Observation of the B0→D‾∗0K+π−B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*0}K^{+}π^{-} and Bs0→D‾∗0K−π+B_s^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*0}K^{-}π^{+} decays

The first observations of B0→D‾∗(2007)0K+π−B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{+}π^{-} and Bs0→D‾∗(2007)0K−π+B_s^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{-}π^{+} decays are presented, and their branching fractions relative to that of the B0→D‾∗(2007)0π+π−B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}π^{+}π^{-} decay are reported. These modes can potentially be used to investigate the spectroscopy of charm and charm-strange resonances and to determine the angle γγ of the CKM unitarity triangle. It is also important to understand them as a source of potential background in determinations of γγ from B+→DK+B^{+}\rightarrow DK^{+} and B0→DK+π−B^{0}\rightarrow DK^{+}π^{-} decays. The analysis is based on a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−15.4 ~\rm{fb}^{-1} of proton--proton collision data at 13 TeV13 ~\rm{TeV} centre-of-mass energy recorded with the LHCb detector. The D‾∗(2007)0\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0} mesons are fully reconstructed in the D‾0π0\overline{D}^{0}π^{0} and D‾0γ\overline{D}^{0}γ channels, with the D‾0→K+π−\overline{D}^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}π^{-} decay. A novel weighting method is used to subtract background while simultaneously applying an event-by-event efficiency correction to account for resonant structures in the decays.

Observation of the suppressed Λb0→DpK−Λ_b^0\to D p K^- decay with D→K+π−D\to K^+ π^- and measurement of its C ⁣PC\!P asymmetry

A study of Λb0Λ_b^0 baryon decays to the DpK−DpK^- final state is presented based on a proton-proton collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1} collected with the LHCb detector. Two Λb0Λ_b^0 decays are considered, Λb0→DpK−Λ_b^0\to DpK^- with D→K−π+D\to K^-π^+ and D→K+π−D\to K^+π^-, where DD represents a superposition of D0D^0 and D‾0\overline{D}^0 states. The measured natural widths of these states are consistent with zero, with upper limits of Γ(Ξb(6327)0)<2.20 (2.56) MeVΓ({\itΞ}_b(6327)^0)<2.20~(2.56) ~{\rm MeV} and Γ(Ξb(6333)0)<1.60 (1.92) MeVΓ({\itΞ}_b(6333)^0)<1.60~(1.92) ~{\rm MeV} at a 90% (95%)90\%~(95\%) credibility level. The significance of the two-peak hypothesis is larger than nine (five) Gaussian standard deviations compared to the no-peak (one-peak) hypothesis. The masses, widths and resonant structure of the new states are in good agreement with the expectations for a doublet of 1DD Ξb0{\itΞ}_b^0 resonances.

Precise determination of the B0s-B0sbar oscillation frequency

Mesons comprising a beauty quark and a strange quark can oscillate between particle (B0s) and antiparticle (B0s) flavour eigenstates, with a frequency given by the mass difference between heavy and light mass eigenstates, deltams. Here we present ameasurement of deltams using B0s2DsPi decays produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The oscillation frequency is found to be deltams = 17.7683 +- 0.0051 +- 0.0032 ps-1, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This measurement improves upon the current deltams precision by a factor of two. We combine this result with previous LHCb measurements to determine deltams = 17.7656 +- 0.0057 ps-1, which is the legacy measurement of the original LHCb detector.

Search for massive long-lived particles decaying semileptonically at sqrt(s)=13 TeV

A search is performed for massive long-lived particles (LLP) decaying semileptonically into a muon and two quarks. Two kinds of LLP production processes were considered. In the first, a Higgs-like boson with mass from 30 to 200 GeV is produced by gluon fusion and decays into two LLPs. The analysis covers LLP mass values from 10 GeV up to about one half the Higgs-like boson mass. The second LLP production mode is directly from quark interactions, with LLP masses from 10 to 90 GeV. The LLP lifetimes considered range from 5 to 200 ps. This study uses LHCb data collected from proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 1/fb. No evidence of these long-lived states has been observed, and upper limits on the production cross-section times branching ratio have been set for each model considered.

Study of ZZ bosons produced in association with charm in the forward region

Events containing a ZZ boson and a charm jet are studied for the first time in the forward region of proton-proton collisions. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb−16 \, {\rm fb}^{-1} collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the LHCb detector. In events with a ZZ boson and a jet, the fraction of charm jets is determined in intervals of ZZ-boson rapidity in the range 2.0<y(Z)<4.52.0 < y(Z) < 4.5. A sizable enhancement is observed in the forward-most y(Z)y(Z) interval, which could be indicative of a valence-like intrinsic-charm component in the proton wave function.

Study of ϕϕ-meson production in pp++Al, pp++Au, dd++Au, and 3^3He++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV

Small nuclear collisions are mainly sensitive to cold-nuclear-matter effects; however, the collective behavior observed in these collisions shows a hint of hot-nuclear-matter effects. The identified-particle spectra, especially the ϕϕ mesons which contain strange and antistrange quarks and have a relatively small hadronic-interaction cross section, are a good tool to study these effects. The PHENIX experiment has measured ϕϕ mesons in a specific set of small collision systems pp++Al, pp++Au, and 3^3He++Au, as well as dd++Au [Phys. Rev. C {\bf 83}, 024909 (2011)], at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. The transverse-momentum spectra and nuclear-modification factors are presented and compared to theoretical-model predictions. The comparisons with different calculations suggest that quark-gluon plasma may be formed in these small collision systems at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. However, the volume and the lifetime of the produced medium may be insufficient for observing strangeness-enhancement and jet-quenching effects. Comparison with calculations suggests that the main production mechanisms of ϕϕ mesons at midrapidity may be different in pp++Al versus p/d/p/d/3^3He++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. While thermal quark recombination seems to dominate in p/d/p/d/3^3He++Au collisions, fragmentation seems to be the main production mechanism in pp++Al collisions.

Study of the doubly charmed tetraquark Tcc+T_{cc}^+

The state is consistent with the ground isoscalar Tcc+T^+_{cc} tetraquark with a quark content of ccuˉdˉcc\bar{u}\bar{d} and spin-parity quantum numbers JP=1+\mathrm{J}^{\mathrm{P}}=1^+. Study of the DDDD mass spectra disfavours interpretation of the resonance as the isovector state. Resonance parameters including the pole position, scattering length, effective range and compositeness are measured to reveal important information about the nature of the Tcc+T^+_{cc} state. In addition, an unexpected dependence of the production rate on track multiplicity is observed.

Systematic study of nuclear effects in pp++Al, pp++Au, dd++Au, and 3^{3}He++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV using π0π^0 production

The PHENIX collaboration presents a systematic study of π0π^0 production from pp++pp, pp++Al, pp++Au, dd++Au, and 3^{3}He++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. Measurements were performed with different centrality selections as well as the total inelastic, 0%--100%, selection for all collision systems. For 0%--100% collisions, the nuclear modification factors, RxAR_{xA}, are consistent with unity for pTp_T above 8 GeV/cc, but exhibit an enhancement in peripheral collisions and a suppression in central collisions. The enhancement and suppression characteristics are similar for all systems for the same centrality class. It is shown that for high-pTp_T-π0π^0 production, the nucleons in the dd and 3^3He interact mostly independently with the Au nucleus and that the counter intuitive centrality dependence is likely due to a physical correlation between multiplicity and the presence of a hard scattering process. These observations disfavor models where parton energy loss has a significant contribution to nuclear modifications in small systems. Nuclear modifications at lower pTp_T resemble the Cronin effect -- an increase followed by a peak in central or inelastic collisions and a plateau in peripheral collisions. The peak height has a characteristic ordering by system size as pp++Au >> dd++Au >> 3^{3}He++Au >> pp++Al. For collisions with Au ions, current calculations based on initial state cold nuclear matter effects result in the opposite order, suggesting the presence of other contributions to nuclear modifications, in particular at lower pTp_T.

Test of lepton universality in beauty-quark decays

The Standard Model of particle physics currently provides our best description of fundamental particles and their interactions. The theory predicts that the different charged leptons, the electron, muon and tau, have identical electroweak interaction strengths. Previous measurements have shown a wide range of particle decays are consistent with this principle of lepton universality. This article presents evidence for the breaking of lepton universality in beauty-quark decays, with a significance of 3.1 standard deviations, based on proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are of processes in which a beauty meson transforms into a strange meson with the emission of either an electron and a positron, or a muon and an antimuon. If confirmed by future measurements, this violation of lepton universality would imply physics beyond the Standard Model, such as a new fundamental interaction between quarks and leptons.

Transverse-single-spin asymmetries of charged pions at midrapidity in transversely polarized p+pp{+}p collisions at s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV

In 2015, the PHENIX collaboration has measured single-spin asymmetries for charged pions in transversely polarized proton-proton collisions at the center of mass energy of s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV. The pions were detected at central rapidities of ∣η∣<0.35|η|<0.35. The single-spin asymmetries are consistent with zero for each charge individually, as well as consistent with the previously published neutral-pion asymmetries in the same rapidity range. However, they show a slight indication of charge-dependent differences which may suggest a flavor dependence in the underlying mechanisms that create these asymmetries.

The first observation of the suppressed semileptonic Bs0→K−μ+νμB_s^0 \to K^-μ^+ν_μ decay is reported. Using a data sample recorded in {\it pp} collisions in 2012 with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb−1\mathrm{fb}^{-1}, the branching fraction \mbox{B(Bs0→K−μ+νμ)\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to K^-μ^+ν_μ)} is measured to be (1.06±0.05 (stat)±0.08 (syst))×10−4(1.06\pm0.05~(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.08~(\mathrm{syst}))\times 10^{-4}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second one represents the combined systematic uncertainties. The decay Bs0→Ds−μ+νμB_s^0 \to D_s^-μ^+ν_μ, where Ds−D_s^- is reconstructed in the final state K+K−π−K^+K^-π^-, is used as a normalization channel to minimize the experimental systematic uncertainty. Measurement of branching fraction ratios for B+→D∗+D−K+B^+\to D^{*+}D^-K^+, B+→D∗−D+K+B^+\to D^{*-}D^+K^+, and B0→D∗−D0K+B^0\to D^{*-}D^0K^+ decays

A measurement of four branching-fraction ratios for three-body decays of BB mesons involving two open-charm hadrons in the final state is presented. Run 1 and Run 2 pppp collision data are used, recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies 77, 88, and 1313 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 99 fb−1^{-1}. The measured branching-fraction ratios are \[ \begin{eqnarray} \frac{\mathcal{B} (B^+\to D^{*+}D^-K^+)}{\mathcal{B} (B^+\to \kern 0.2em\overline{\kern -0.2em D}{}^0 D^0 K^+)} &=& 0.517 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.013 \pm 0.011 , \\ \frac{\mathcal{B} (B^+\to D^{*-}D^+K^+)}{\mathcal{B} (B^+\to \kern 0.2em\overline{\kern -0.2em D}{}^0 D^0 K^+)} &=& 0.577 \pm 0.016 \pm 0.013 \pm 0.013 , \\ \frac{\mathcal{B} (B^0\to D^{*-}D^0K^+)}{\mathcal{B} (B^0\to D^- D^0 K^+)} &=& 1.754 \pm 0.028 \pm 0.016 \pm 0.035 , \\ \frac{\mathcal{B} (B^+\to D^{*+}D^-K^+)}{\mathcal{B} (B^+\to D^{*-}D^+K^+)} &=& 0.907 \pm 0.033 \pm 0.014 ,\end{eqnarray} \] where the first of the uncertainties is statistical, the second systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainties on the DD-meson branching fractions. These are the most accurate measurements of these ratios to date.

Measurement of CP violation in the decay B+→K+π0B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+} π^{0}

A measurement of direct CP violation in the decay B+→K+π0B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+} π^{0} is reported using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1\textrm{fb}^{-1}, collected with the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV. The CP asymmetry is measured to be 0.025±0.015±0.006±0.0030.025 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.006 \pm 0.003, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to an external input, respectively. This is the most precise measurement of the CP asymmetry in the decay B+→K+π0B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+} π^{0} and exceeds the precision on the current world average. This direct CP asymmetry is a key input to studies of a long-standing anomaly in BB meson decays, known as the KπKπ-puzzle. The asymmetry is consistent with the previous measurements of this quantity, confirming and significantly enhancing the observed anomalous difference between the direct CP asymmetries of the B0→K+π−B^{0} \rightarrow K^{+} π^{-} and B+→K+π0B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+} π^{0} decays.

Measurement of differential bbˉb\bar{b}- and ccˉc\bar{c}-dijet cross-sections in the forward region of pppp collisions at s=13 TeV\sqrt{s}=13 ~ \mathrm{TeV}

The inclusive bbˉb \bar{b}- and ccˉc \bar{c}-dijet production cross-sections in the forward region of pppp collisions are measured using a data sample collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.6 fb−1^{-1}. Differential cross-sections are measured as a function of the transverse momentum and of the pseudorapidity of the leading jet, of the rapidity difference between the jets, and of the dijet invariant mass. A fiducial region for the measurement is defined by requiring that the two jets originating from the two bb or cc quarks are emitted with transverse momentum greater than 20 GeV/c/c, pseudorapidity in the range 2.2<η<4.22.2 < η< 4.2, and with a difference in the azimuthal angle between the two jets greater than 1.5. The integrated bbˉb \bar{b}-dijet cross-section is measured to be 53.0±9.753.0 \pm 9.7 nb, and the total ccˉc \bar{c}-dijet cross-section is measured to be 73±1673 \pm 16 nb. The ratio between ccˉc \bar{c}- and bbˉb \bar{b}-dijet cross-sections is also measured and found to be 1.37±0.271.37 \pm 0.27. The results are in agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-leading order.

Measurement of the CKM angle γγ in B±→DK±B^\pm\to D K^\pm and B±→Dπ±B^\pm \to D π^\pm decays with D→KS0h+h−D \to K_\mathrm S^0 h^+ h^-

A measurement of CPCP-violating observables is performed using the decays B±→DK±B^\pm\to D K^\pm and B±→Dπ±B^\pm\to D π^\pm, where the DD meson is reconstructed in one of the self-conjugate three-body final states KSπ+π−K_{\mathrm S}π^+π^- and KSK+K−K_{\mathrm S}K^+K^- (commonly denoted KSh+h−K_{\mathrm S} h^+h^-). The decays are analysed in bins of the DD-decay phase space, leading to a measurement that is independent of the modelling of the DD-decay amplitude. The observables are interpreted in terms of the CKM angle γγ. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−19\,\text{fb}^{-1} collected in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 77, 88, and 13 TeV13\,\text{TeV} with the LHCb experiment, γγ is measured to be (68.7−5.1+5.2)∘\left(68.7^{+5.2}_{-5.1}\right)^\circ. The hadronic parameters rBDKr_B^{DK}, rBDπr_B^{Dπ}, δBDKδ_B^{DK}, and δBDπδ_B^{Dπ}, which are the ratios and strong-phase differences of the suppressed and favoured B±B^\pm decays, are also reported.

Measurement of the shape of the Bs0→Ds∗−μ+νμB_s^0\rightarrow D_s^{*-}μ^{+}ν_μ differential decay rate

The shape of the Bs0→Ds∗−μ+νμB_s^0\rightarrow D_s^{*-}μ^+ν_μ differential decay rate is obtained as a function of the hadron recoil using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 fb−1^{-1} collected by the LHCb detector. The Bs0→Ds∗−μ+νμB_s^0\rightarrow D_s^{*-}μ^+ν_μ decay is reconstructed through the decays Ds∗−→Ds−γD_s^{*-}\rightarrow D_s^{-}γ and Ds−→K−K+π−D_s^{-}\rightarrow K^-K^+π^-. The differential decay rate is fitted with the Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert (CLN) and Boyd-Grinstein-Lebed (BGL) parametrisations of the form factors, and the relevant quantities for both are extracted.

Observation of a new Ξb0Ξ_b^0 state

Using a proton-proton collision data sample collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.5 fb−1^{-1}, the observation of a new excited Ξb0Ξ_b^0 resonance decaying to the Ξb−π+Ξ_b^-π^+ final state is presented. The state, referred to as Ξb(6227)0Ξ_b(6227)^0, has a measured mass and natural width of m(Ξb(6227)0)=6227.1 −1.5 +1.4±0.5m(Ξ_b(6227)^0) = 6227.1^{\,+1.4}_{\,-1.5}\pm0.5 MeV, Γ(Ξb(6227)0)=18.6 −4.1 +5.0±1.4Γ(Ξ_b(6227)^0) = 18.6^{\,+5.0}_{\,-4.1}\pm1.4 MeV, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic. The production rate of the Ξb(6227)0Ξ_b(6227)^0 state relative to that of the Ξb−Ξ_b^- baryon in the kinematic region 2<η<52<η<5 and pT<30p_{\rm T}<30 GeV is measured to be fΞb(6227)0fΞb−B(Ξb(6227)0→Ξb−π+)=0.045±0.008±0.004\frac{f_{Ξ_b(6227)^0}}{f_{Ξ_b^-}}{\mathcal{B}}(Ξ_b(6227)^0\toΞ_b^-π^+) = 0.045\pm0.008\pm0.004, where B(Ξb(6227)0→Ξb−π+){\mathcal{B}}(Ξ_b(6227)^0\toΞ_b^-π^+) is the branching fraction of the decay, and fΞb(6227)0f_{Ξ_b(6227)^0} and fΞb−f_{Ξ_b^-} represent fragmentation fractions. Improved measurements of the mass and natural width of the previously observed Ξb(6227)−Ξ_b(6227)^- state, along with the mass of the Ξb−Ξ_b^- baryon, are also reported. Both measurements are significantly more precise than, and consistent with, previously reported values.

No structure on the invariant mass distribution of the Λc+K+\varLambda^+_c K^+ system is found, consistent with no open-charm pentaquark signature.

POLAR-2: a large scale gamma-ray polarimeter for GRBs

The prompt emission of GRBs has been investigated for more than 50 years but remains poorly understood. Commonly, spectral and temporal profiles of γ-ray emission are analysed. However, they are insufficient for a complete picture on GRB-related physics. The addition of polarization measurements provides invaluable information towards the understanding of these astrophysical sources. In recent years, dedicated polarimeters, such as POLAR and GAP, were built. The former of which observed low levels of polarization as well as a temporal evolution of the polarization angle. It was understood that a larger sample of GRB polarization measurements and time resolved studies are necessary to constrain theoretical models. The POLAR-2 mission aims to address this by increasing the effective area by an order of magnitude compared to POLAR. POLAR-2 is manifested for launch on board the China Space Station in 2024 and will operate for at least 2 years. Insight from POLAR will aid in the improvement of the overall POLAR-2 design. Major improvements (compared to POLAR) will include the replacement of multi-anode PMTs (MAPMTs) with SiPMs, increase in sensitive volume and further technological upgrades. POLAR-2 is projected to measure about 50 GRBs per year with equal or better quality compared to the best seen by POLAR. The instrument design, preliminary results and anticipated scientific potential of this mission will be discussed.

Search for the doubly charmed baryon Ξcc+\itΞ_{cc}^{+} in the Ξc+π−π+\itΞ_{c}^{+} π^{-} π^{+} final state

A search for the doubly charmed baryon Ξcc+\itΞ_{cc}^{+} is performed in the Ξc+π−π+\itΞ_{c}^{+} π^{-} π^{+} invariant-mass spectrum, where the Ξc+\itΞ_{c}^{+} baryon is reconstructed in the pK−π+p K^{-} π^{+} final state. The study uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}. No significant signal is observed in the invariant-mass range of 3.4−-3.8 GeV/c2\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c^2. Upper limits are set on the ratio of branching fractions multiplied by the production cross-section with respect to the Ξcc++→(Ξc+→pK−π+)π+\itΞ_{cc}^{++} \rightarrow (\itΞ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p K^{-} π^{+}) π^{+} decay for different Ξcc+\itΞ_{cc}^{+} mass and lifetime hypotheses in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and the transverse momentum range from 2.5 to 25 GeV/c\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c. The results from this search are combined with a previously published search for the Ξcc+→Λc+K−π+\itΞ_{cc}^{+} \rightarrow \itΛ_{c}^{+} K^{-} π^{+} decay mode, yielding a maximum local significance of 4.0 standard deviations around the mass of 3620 MeV/c2\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V}/c^2, including systematic uncertainties. Taking into account the look-elsewhere effect in the 3.5−-3.7 GeV/c2\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c^2 mass window, the combined global significance is 2.9 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties.

The decays Bs0→J/ψK∗0Kˉ∗0B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψK^{\ast0} \bar{K}^{\ast0} and Bs0→χc1(3872)K+K−B^0_s \rightarrow χ_{c1}(3872)K^+K^-, where the K+K−K^+K^- pair does not originate from a ϕϕ meson, are observed for the first time. Precise measurements of the ratios of branching fractions between intermediate χc1(3872)ϕχ_{c1}(3872)ϕ, J/ψK∗0Kˉ∗0J/ψK^{\ast0}\bar{K}^{\ast0}, ψ(2S)ϕψ(2S)ϕ and χc1(3872)K+K−χ_{c1}(3872)K^+K^- states are reported. A structure, denoted as X(4740)X(4740), is observed in the J/ψϕJ/ψϕ mass spectrum and, assuming a Breit-Wigner parameterisation, its mass and width are determined to be \begin{eqnarray*} m_{X(4740)} & = & 4741 \pm 6 \pm 6\,{\mathrm{MeV}}/c^2 \,, \\ Γ_{X(4740)} & = & 53 \pm 15 \pm 11\,{\mathrm{MeV}} \,, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. In addition, the most precise single measurement of the mass of the Bs0B^0_s meson is performed and gives a value of mBs0=5366.98±0.07±0.13 MeV/c2 . m_{B^0_s} = 5366.98 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.13\,{\mathrm{MeV}}/c^2\,.

Study of the Bc+B_c^+ decays into charmonia and three light hadrons

Using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb−19fb^{-1} collected with the LHCb detector, seven decay modes of the Bc+B_c^+ meson into a J/ψJ/ψ or ψ(2S)ψ(2S) meson and three charged hadrons, kaons or pions, are studied. The decays Bc+→(ψ(2S)→J/ψπ+π−)π+B_c^+\rightarrow ( ψ(2S) \rightarrow J/ψπ^+ π^-)π^+ , Bc+→ψ(2S)π+π+π−B_c^+\rightarrow ψ(2S)π^+π^+π^-, Bc+→J/ψK+π+π−B_c^+\rightarrow J/ψK^+π^+π^- and Bc+→K+K+K−B_c^+\rightarrow K^+K^+K^- are observed for the first time, and evidence for the Bc+→ψ(2S)K+K−π+B_c^+\rightarrow ψ(2S)K^+K^-π^+ decay is found, where J/ψJ/ψ and ψ(2S)ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed in their dimuon decay modes. The ratios of branching fractions between the different Bc+B_c^+ decays are reported as well as the fractions of the decays proceeding via intermediate resonances. The results largely support the factorisation approach used for a theoretical description of the studied decays.

Transverse momentum dependent forward neutron single spin asymmetries in transversely polarized pp++pp collisions at s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV

In 2015, the PHENIX collaboration has measured very forward (η>6.8η>6.8) single-spin asymmetries of inclusive neutrons in transversely polarized proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at a center of mass energy of 200 GeV. A previous publication from this data set concentrated on the nuclear dependence of such asymmetries. In this measurement the explicit transverse-momentum dependence of inclusive neutron single spin asymmetries for proton-proton collisions is extracted using a bootstrapping-unfolding technique on the transverse momenta. This explicit transverse-momentum dependence will help improve the understanding of the mechanisms that create these asymmetries.

J/ψJ/ψ and ψ(2S)ψ(2S) production at forward rapidity in pp+pp collisions at s=510\sqrt{s}=510 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured the differential cross section, mean transverse momentum, mean transverse momentum squared of inclusive J/ψJ/ψ and cross-section ratio of ψ(2S)ψ(2S) to J/ψJ/ψ at forward rapidity in \pp collisions at \sqrts = 510 GeV via the dimuon decay channel. Comparison is made to inclusive J/ψJ/ψ cross sections measured at \sqrts = 200 GeV and 2.76--13 TeV. The result is also compared to leading-order nonrelativistic QCD calculations coupled to a color-glass-condensate description of the low-xx gluons in the proton at low transverse momentum (pTp_T) and to next-to-leading order nonrelativistic QCD calculations for the rest of the pTp_T range. These calculations overestimate the data at low pTp_T. While consistent with the data within uncertainties above ≈3\approx3 GeV/cc, the calculations are systematically below the data. The total cross section times the branching ratio is BR $dσ^{J/ψ}_{pp}/dy (1.2<|y|<2.2, 0<p_T<10~\mbox{GeV/$c$}) =$ 54.3 ±\pm 0.5 (stat) ±\pm 5.5 (syst) nb.

Ab initio description of the Bi2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+δ_{8+δ} electronic structure

Bi-based cuprate superconductors are important materials for both fundamental research and applications. As in other cuprates, the superconducting phase in the Bi compounds lies close to an antiferromagnetic phase. Our density functional theory calculations based on the strongly-constrained-and-appropriately-normed (SCAN) exchange correlation functional in Bi2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+δ_{8+δ} reveal the persistence of magnetic moments on the copper ions for oxygen concentrations ranging from the pristine phase to the optimally hole-doped compound. We also find the existence of ferrimagnetic solutions in the heavily doped compounds, which are expected to suppress superconductivity.

Amplitude analysis of the B+→π+π+π−B^+ \rightarrow π^+π^+π^- decay

The results of an amplitude analysis of the charmless three-body decay B+→π+π+π−B^+ \rightarrow π^+π^+π^-, in which C ⁣PC\!P-violation effects are taken into account, are reported. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb−13 \text{fb}^{-1} of pppp collisions recorded with the LHCb detector. The most challenging aspect of the analysis is the description of the behaviour of the π+π−π^+ π^- S-wave contribution, which is achieved by using three complementary approaches based on the isobar model, the K-matrix formalism, and a quasi-model-independent procedure. Additional resonant contributions for all three methods are described using a common isobar model, and include the ρ(770)0ρ(770)^0, ω(782)ω(782) and ρ(1450)0ρ(1450)^0 resonances in the π+π−π^+π^- P-wave, the f2(1270)f_2(1270) resonance in the π+π−π^+π^- D-wave, and the ρ3(1690)0ρ_3(1690)^0 resonance in the π+π−π^+π^- F-wave. Significant C ⁣PC\!P-violation effects are observed in both S- and D-waves, as well as in the interference between the S- and P-waves. The results from all three approaches agree and provide new insight into the dynamics and the origin of C ⁣PC\!P-violation effects in B+→π+π+π−B^+ \rightarrow π^+π^+π^- decays.

Determination of quantum numbers for several excited charmed mesons observed in B−→D∗+π−π−B^- \to D^{*+} π^- π^- decays

A four-body amplitude analysis of the B−→D∗+π−π−B^- \to D^{*+} π^- π^- decay is performed, where fractions and relative phases of the various resonances contributing to the decay are measured. Several quasi-model-independent analyses are performed aimed at searching for the presence of new states and establishing the quantum numbers of previously observed charmed meson resonances. In particular the resonance parameters and quantum numbers are determined for the D1(2420)D_1(2420), D1(2430)D_1(2430), D0(2550)D_0(2550), D1∗(2600)D^*_1(2600), D2(2740)D_2(2740) and D3∗(2750)D^*_3(2750) states. The mixing between the D1(2420)D_1(2420) and D1(2430)D_1(2430) resonances is studied and the mixing parameters are measured. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb−1fb^{-1}, collected in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV with the LHCb detector.

Evolution of pi^0 suppression in Au+Au collisions from sqrt(s_NN) = 39 to 200 GeV

Neutral-pion, pi^0, spectra were measured at midrapidity (|y|<0.35) in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 39 and 62.4 GeV and compared to earlier measurements at 200 GeV in the 1<p_T<10 GeV/c transverse-momentum (p_T) range. The high-p_T tail is well described by a power law in all cases and the powers decrease significantly with decreasing center-of-mass energy. The change of powers is very similar to that observed in the corresponding p+p-collision spectra. The nuclear-modification factors (R_AA) show significant suppression and a distinct energy dependence at moderate p_T in central collisions. At high p_T, R_AA is similar for 62.4 and 200 GeV at all centralities. Perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics calculations that describe R_AA well at 200 GeV, fail to describe the 39 GeV data, raising the possibility that the relative importance of initial-state effects and soft processes increases at lower energies. A conclusion that the region where hard processes are dominant is reached only at higher p_T, is also supported by the x_T dependence of the x_T-scaling power-law exponent.

Referring to these states by their mass, the mass values are \begin{align*} m(Ω_b(6316)^-) &= 6315.64\pm0.31\pm0.07\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \\ m(Ω_b(6330)^-) &= 6330.30\pm0.28\pm0.07\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \\ m(Ω_b(6340)^-) &= 6339.71\pm0.26\pm0.05\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \\ m(Ω_b(6350)^-) &= 6349.88\pm0.35\pm0.05\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \end{align*}where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and the last is due to the knowledge of the Ξb0Ξ_b^0 mass. The natural widths of the three lower mass states are consistent with zero, and the 90% confidence-level upper limits are determined to be Γ(Ωb(6316)−)<2.8{Γ(Ω_b(6316)^-)<2.8} MeV, Γ(Ωb(6330)−)<3.1{Γ(Ω_b(6330)^-)<3.1} MeV and Γ(Ωb(6340)−)<1.5{Γ(Ω_b(6340)^-)<1.5} MeV. The natural width of the Ωb(6350)−Ω_b(6350)^- peak is 1.4−0.8+1.0±0.11.4^{+1.0}_{-0.8}\pm0.1 MeV, which is 2.5σσ from zero and corresponds to an upper limit of 2.8 MeV. The peaks have local significances ranging from 3.6σσ to 7.2σσ. After accounting for the look-elsewhere effect, the significances of the Ωb(6316)−Ω_b(6316)^- and Ωb(6330)−Ω_b(6330)^- peaks are reduced to 2.1σσ and 2.6σσ respectively, while the two higher mass peaks exceed 5σσ. The observed peaks are consistent with expectations for excited Ωb−Ω_b^- resonances.

Power systems are equipment and data intensive. In todays big data era, a large amount of data is being generated from power system equipment via various inspection and testing activities. The industry is encouraged to make optimal decisions for power equipment maintenance, replacement, configuration and planning. Utility companies are trying to leverage the use of big data and advanced analytics for equipment management in order to balance system reliability, performance and cost. To advance such applications and promote collaborations with external researchers, the Utility Analytics Network has made the effort to gather 15 datasets from multiple utility companies in North America on various types of power equipment. These datasets are now shared in public and this paper serves the purpose of providing a detailed introduction to the datasets.

We present the first results on isospin amplitudes in bb-baryon decays, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.5 fb−1^{-1}, collected with the LHCb detector in pppp collisions at center of mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The isospin amplitude ratio ∣A1(Λb0→J/ψΣ0)/A0(Λb0→J/ψΛ)∣|A_1(Λ_b^0\to J/ψΣ^0)/A_0(Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ)|, where the subscript on AA indicates the final-state isospin, is measured to be less than 1/21.8 at 95\% confidence level. The Cabibbo suppressed Ξb0→J/ψΛΞ_b^0\to J/ψΛ decay is observed for the first time, allowing for the measurement ∣A0(Ξb0→J/ψΛ)/A1/2(Ξb0→J/ψΞ0)∣=0.37±0.06±0.02|A_0(Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΛ)/A_{1/2}(Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΞ^0)| =0.37 \pm 0.06\pm 0.02, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Measurement of Ξcc++\mathitΞ_{cc}^{++} production in pppp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV

The production of Ξcc++\mathitΞ_{cc}^{++} baryons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV is measured in the transverse-momentum range 4<pT<15 GeV4<p_\mathrm{T}<15~\mathrm{GeV}/cc and the rapidity range 2.0<y<4.52.0<y<4.5. The data used in this measurement correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 fb−1\mathrm{fb}^{-1}, recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2016. The ratio of the Ξcc++\mathitΞ_{cc}^{++} production cross-section times the branching fraction of the Ξcc++→Λc+K−π+π+\mathit{Ξ_{cc}^{++} \to Λ_{c}^{+} K^- π^+ π^+} decay relative to the prompt Λc+\mathit{Λ_c^{+}} production cross-section is found to be (2.22±0.27±0.29)×10−4(2.22\pm 0.27 \pm 0.29)\times 10^{-4}, assuming the central value of the measured Ξcc++\mathit{Ξ_{cc}^{++}} lifetime, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Measurement of ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| with Bs0→Ds(∗)−μ+νμB_s^0 \to D_s^{(*)-} μ^+ ν_μ decays

The element ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix is measured using semileptonic Bs0B_s^0 decays produced in proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1}. Rates of Bs0→Ds−μ+νμB_s^0 \to D_s^{-} μ^+ ν_μ and Bs0→Ds∗−μ+νμB_s^0 \to D_s^{*-} μ^+ ν_μ decays are analyzed using hadronic form-factor parametrizations derived either by Caprini, Lellouch and Neubert (CLN) or by Boyd, Grinstein and Lebed (BGL). The measured values of ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| are (41.4±0.6±0.9±1.2)×10−3{(41.4 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.9 \pm 1.2)\times 10^{-3}} and (42.3±0.8±0.9±1.2)×10−3{(42.3 \pm 0.8 \pm 0.9 \pm 1.2)\times 10^{-3}} in the CLN and BGL parametrization, respectively. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third is due to the external inputs used in the measurement. These results are in agreement with those obtained from decays of B+B^+ and B0B^0 mesons. They are the first determinations of ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| at a hadron-collider experiment and the first using Bs0B_s^0 meson decays.

Measurement of C ⁣PC\!P-averaged observables in the B0→K∗0μ+μ−B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}μ^{+}μ^{-} decay

An angular analysis of the B0→K∗0(→K+π−)μ+μ−B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}(\to K^{+}π^{-})μ^{+}μ^{-} decay is presented using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb−1^{-1} of pppp collision data collected with the LHCb experiment. The full set of C ⁣PC\!P-averaged observables are determined in bins of the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system. Contamination from decays with the K+π−K^{+}π^{-} system in an S-wave configuration is taken into account. The tension seen between the previous LHCb results and the Standard Model predictions persists with the new data. The precise value of the significance of this tension depends on the choice of theory nuisance parameters.

Measurement of fs/fuf_s / f_u variation with proton-proton collision energy and BB-meson kinematics

The ratio of the Bs0\mathrm{B}^0_\mathrm{s} and B+\mathrm{B}^+ fragmentation fractions fsf_\mathrm{s} and fuf_u is studied with Bs0→J/ψϕB^0_\mathrm{s}\to\mathrm{J}/ψϕ and B+→J/ψK+B^+\to\mathrm{J}/ψK^+ decays using data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at 7, 8 and 13 TeV\text{ TeV} center-of-mass energies. The analysis is performed in bins of B\mathrm{B}-meson momentum, longitudinal momentum, transverse momentum, pseudorapidity and rapidity. The fragmentation-fraction ratio fs/fuf_\mathrm{s} / f_u is observed to depend on the B\mathrm{B}-meson transverse momentum with a significance of 6.0 σ6.0\,σ. This dependency is driven by the 13 TeV\text{ TeV} sample (8.7 σ8.7\,σ) while the results for the other collision energies are not significant when considered separately. Furthermore the results show a 4.8 σ4.8\,σ evidence for an increase of fs/fuf_\mathrm{s} / f_u as a function of collision energy.

Measurement of J/ψJ/ψ at forward and backward rapidity in pp+pp, pp+A+Al, pp+A+Au, and 3^3He+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200~{\rm GeV}

Charmonium is a valuable probe in heavy-ion collisions to study the properties of the quark gluon plasma, and is also an interesting probe in small collision systems to study cold nuclear matter effects, which are also present in large collision systems. With the recent observations of collective behavior of produced particles in small system collisions, measurements of the modification of charmonium in small systems have become increasingly relevant. We present the results of J/ψJ/ψ measurements at forward and backward rapidity in various small collision systems, pp++pp, pp++Al, pp++Au and 3^3He++Au, at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. The results are presented in the form of the observable RABR_{AB}, the nuclear modification factor, a measure of the ratio of the J/ψJ/ψ invariant yield compared to the scaled yield in pp++pp collisions. We examine the rapidity, transverse momentum, and collision centrality dependence of nuclear effects on J/ψJ/ψ production with different projectile sizes pp and 3^3He, and different target sizes Al and Au. The modification is found to be strongly dependent on the target size, but to be very similar for pp++Au and 3^{3}He++Au. However, for 0%--20% central collisions at backward rapidity, the modification for 3^{3}He++Au is found to be smaller than that for pp++Au, with a mean fit to the ratio of 0.89±0.030.89\pm0.03(stat)±0.08{\pm}0.08(syst), possibly indicating final state effects due to the larger projectile size.

Measurement of charged pion double spin asymmetries at midrapidity in longitudinally polarized pp++pp collisions at s=510\sqrt{s}=510 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured the longitudinal double spin asymmetries, ALLA_{LL}, for charged pions at midrapidity (∣η∣<0.35|η|<0.35) in longitudinally polarized pp++pp collisions at s=510\sqrt{s}=510 GeV. These measurements are sensitive to the gluon spin contribution to the total spin of the proton in the parton momentum fraction xx range between 0.04 and 0.09. One can infer the sign of the gluon polarization from the ordering of pion asymmetries with charge alone. The asymmetries are found to be consistent with global quantum-chromodynamics fits of deep-inelastic scattering and data at s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV, which show a nonzero positive contribution of gluon spin to the proton spin.

Measurement of CP violation in the Bs0→ϕϕB_s^0\rightarrowϕϕ decay and search for the B0→ϕϕB^0\rightarrow ϕϕ decay

A measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry in Bs0→ϕϕB_s^0\rightarrowϕϕ decays is presented. Using a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.05.0fb−1^{-1} collected by the $\mbox{LHCb}$ experiment at centre-of-mass energies s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV in 2011, 8 TeV in 2012 and 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016, a signal yield of around 9000 Bs0→ϕϕB_s^0\rightarrowϕϕ decays is obtained. The CP-violating phase ϕsssˉsϕ_s^{s\bar{s}s} is measured to be −0.073±0.115-0.073 \pm 0.115(stat)±0.027\pm 0.027(syst) rad, under the assumption it is independent on the helicity of the ϕϕϕϕ decay. In addition, the CP-violating phases of the transverse polarisations under the assumption of CP conservation of the longitudinal phase are measured. The helicity-independent direct CP-violation parameter is also measured, and is found to be ∣λ∣=0.99±0.05|λ|=0.99 \pm 0.05 (stat)±0.01 \pm 0.01 (syst). In addition, TT-odd triple-product asymmetries are measured. The results obtained are consistent with the hypothesis of CP conservation in b→sˉssˉb\rightarrow\bar{s}s\bar{s} transitions. Finally, a limit on the branching fraction of the B0→ϕϕB^0\rightarrow ϕϕ decay is determined to be B(B0→ϕϕ)<2.7×10−8\mathcal{B}(B^0\rightarrow ϕϕ)<2.7\times 10^{-8} at 90% confidence level.

The production cross-sections for prompt ψ(2S)ψ(2S) mesons and those for ψ(2S)ψ(2S) mesons from bb-hadron decays (ψ(2S)−from−bψ{(2S)}\mathrm{-from-}b) are determined as functions of the transverse momentum, pTp_{\mathrm{T}}, and the rapidity, yy, of the ψ(2S)ψ(2S) meson in the kinematic range 2<pT<20 GeV/c2<p_{\mathrm{T}}<20~\mathrm{GeV}/c and 2.0<y<4.52.0<y<4.5. Measurement of the ηc(1S)η_c(1S) production cross-section in pppp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb−12.0\,fb^{-1}, collected by the LHCb experiment, the production of the ηc(1S)η_c(1S) state in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV\sqrt{s}=13 \text{ TeV} is studied in the rapidity range 2.0<y<4.5{2.0 < y < 4.5} and in the transverse momentum range 6.5<pT<14.0 GeV{6.5 < p_{T} < 14.0\text{ GeV}}. The cross-section for prompt production of ηc(1S)η_c(1S) mesons relative to that of the J/ψJ/ψ meson is measured using the ppˉ{p\bar{p}} decay mode and is found to be σηc(1S)/σJ/ψ=1.69±0.15±0.10±0.18{σ_{η_c(1S)}/σ_{J/ψ} = 1.69 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.18}. The quoted uncertainties are, in order, statistical, systematic and due to uncertainties on the branching fractions of the J/ψ→ppˉ{J/ψ\to p \bar{p}} and ηc→ppˉ{η_c\to p \bar{p}} decays. The prompt ηc(1S)η_c(1S) production cross-section is determined to be σηc(1S)=1.26±0.11±0.08±0.14 μb{σ_{η_c(1S)} = 1.26 \pm 0.11\pm 0.08 \pm 0.14 \,μb}, where the last uncertainty includes that on the J/ψ{J/ψ} meson cross-section. The ratio of the branching fractions of bb-hadron decays to the ηc(1S)η_c(1S) and J/ψ{J/ψ} states is measured to be Bb→ηcX/Bb→J/ψX=0.48±0.03±0.03±0.05{\mathcal{B}_{b\toη_c X}/\mathcal{B}_{b\to J/ψX} = 0.48 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.05}, where the last uncertainty is due to those on the branching fractions of the J/ψ→ppˉ{J/ψ\to p \bar{p}} and ηc→ppˉ{η_c\to p \bar{p}} decays. The difference between the J/ψ{J/ψ} and ηc(1S)η_c(1S) masses is also determined to be 113.0±0.7±0.1 MeV{113.0 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.1\text{ MeV}}, which is the most precise single measurement of this quantity to date.

Measurement of the Λb0→J/ψΛΛ^0_b\rightarrow J/ψΛ angular distribution and the Λb0Λ^0_b polarisation in pppp collisions

This paper presents an analysis of the Λb0→J/ψΛΛ^0_b\rightarrow J/ψΛ angular distribution and the transverse production polarisation of Λb0Λ^0_b baryons in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The measurements are performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb−1^{-1}, collected with the LHCb experiment. The polarisation is determined in a fiducial region of Λb0Λ^0_b transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of 1<pT<201 < p_{T} < 20 GeV/c/c and 2<η<52 < η< 5, respectively. The data are consistent with Λb0Λ^0_b baryons being produced unpolarised in this region. The parity-violating asymmetry parameter of the Λ→pπ−Λ\rightarrow pπ^- decay is also determined from the data and its value is found to be consistent with a recent measurement by the BES\,III collaboration.

The branching fraction is determined to be BR(Bs0→KS0KS0B_s^0 \to K_S^0 K_S^0) = [8.3 ±\pm 1.6 (stat) ±\pm 0.9 (syst) ±\pm 0.8 (norm) ±\pm 0.3 (fs/fdf_s/f_d)] ×10−6\times 10^{-6} , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third and fourth are due to uncertainties on the branching fraction of the normalization mode B0→ϕKS0B^0 \to ϕK_S^0 and the ratio of hadronization fractions fs/fdf_s/f_d. This is the most precise measurement of this branching fraction to date. Nuclear-modification factor of charged hadrons at forward and backward rapidity in pp++Al and pp++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV

The PHENIX experiment has studied nuclear effects in pp++Al and pp++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV on charged hadron production at forward rapidity (1.4<η<2.41.4<η<2.4, pp-going direction) and backward rapidity (−2.2<η<−1.2-2.2<η<-1.2, AA-going direction). Such effects are quantified by measuring nuclear modification factors as a function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity in various collision multiplicity selections. In central pp++Al and pp++Au collisions, a suppression (enhancement) is observed at forward (backward) rapidity compared to the binary scaled yields in pp+pp collisions. The magnitude of enhancement at backward rapidity is larger in pp++Au collisions than in pp++Al collisions, which have a smaller number of participating nucleons. However, the results at forward rapidity show a similar suppression within uncertainties. The results in the integrated centrality are compared with calculations using nuclear parton distribution functions, which show a reasonable agreement at the forward rapidity but fail to describe the backward rapidity enhancement.

Observation of a new baryon state in the Λb0π+π−Λ_b^0π^+π^- mass spectrum

A new baryon state is observed in the Λb0π+π−Λ_b^0π^+π^- mass spectrum with high significance using a data sample of pppp collisions, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies s=7,8\sqrt{s}=7, 8 and 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb−1^{-1}. The mass and natural width of the new state are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} m & = & 6072.3 \pm 2.9 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.2 MeV\,, Γ& = & 72 \pm 11 \pm 2 MeV\,, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The third uncertainty for the mass is due to imprecise knowledge of the Λb0Λ_b^0 baryon mass. The new state is consistent with the first radial excitation of the Λb0Λ_b^0 baryon, the Λb(2S)0Λ_b(2S)^0 resonance. Updated measurements of the masses and the upper limits on the natural widths of the previously observed Λb(5912)0Λ_b(5912)^0 and Λb(5920)0Λ_b(5920)^0 states are also reported.

The Ξc(2923)0Ξ_c(2923)^0 and Ξc(2939)0Ξ_c(2939)^0 baryons are new states. The Ξc(2965)0Ξ_c(2965)^0 state is in the vicinity of the known Ξc(2970)0Ξ_c(2970)^0 baryon; however, their masses and natural widths differ significantly.

Observation of several sources of CPCP violation in B+→π+π+π−B^+ \to π^+ π^+ π^- decays

Observations are reported of different sources of CPCP violation from an amplitude analysis of B+→π+π+π−B^+ \to π^+ π^+ π^- decays, based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3  fb−13 \; {\rm fb}^{-1} of pppp collisions recorded with the LHCb detector. A large CPCP asymmetry is observed in the decay amplitude involving the tensor f2(1270)f_2(1270) resonance, and in addition significant CPCP violation is found in the π+π−π^+ π^- S-wave at low invariant mass. The presence of CPCP violation related to interference between the π+π−π^+ π^- S-wave and the P-wave B+→ρ(770)0π+B^+ \to ρ(770)^0 π^+ amplitude is also established; this causes large local asymmetries but cancels when integrated over the phase space of the decay. The results provide both qualitative and quantitative new insights into CPCP-violation effects in hadronic BB decays.

Observation of the semileptonic decay B+→pp‾μ+νμB^{+}\to p\overline{p}μ^{+}ν_μ

The Cabibbo-suppressed semileptonic decay B+→pp‾μ+νμB^{+}\to p\overline{p}μ^{+}ν_μ is observed for the first time using a sample of pppp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0, 2.0 and 1.7fb−1^{-1} at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13TeV, respectively. The differential branching fraction is measured as a function of the pp‾p\overline{p} invariant mass using the decay mode B+→J/ψK+B^{+}\to J/ψK^{+} for normalisation. The total branching fraction is measured to be \begin{align*} \mathcal{B}(B^{+}\to p\overline{p}μ^{+}ν_μ) = (5.27 ^{+0.23}_{-0.24} \pm 0.21 \pm 0.15)\times 10^{-6}, \end{align*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is from the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the normalisation channel.

Production of π0π^0 and ηη mesons in U++U collisions at sNN=192\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=192 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider measured π0π^0 and ηη mesons at midrapidity in U++U collisions at sNN=192\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=192 GeV in a wide transverse momentum range. Measurements were performed in the π0(η)→γγπ^0(η)\rightarrowγγ decay modes. A strong suppression of π0π^0 and ηη meson production at high transverse momentum was observed in central U++U collisions relative to binary scaled pp++pp results. Yields of π0π^0 and ηη mesons measured in U++U collisions show similar suppression pattern to the ones measured in Au++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV for similar numbers of participant nucleons. The ηη/π0π^0 ratios do not show dependence on centrality or transverse momentum, and are consistent with previously measured values in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, nucleus-nucleus, and e+e−e^+e^- collisions.

Search for A′ ⁣→ ⁣μ+μ−A'\!\to\!μ^+μ^- decays

Searches are performed for both prompt-like and long-lived dark photons, A′A', produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. These searches look for A′ ⁣→ ⁣μ+μ−A'\!\to\!μ^+μ^- decays using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5/fb collected with the LHCb detector. Neither search finds evidence for a signal, and 90% confidence-level exclusion limits are placed on the γγ-A′A' kinetic-mixing strength. The prompt-like A′A' search explores the mass region from near the dimuon threshold up to 70 GeV, and places the most stringent constraints to date on dark photons with 214<m(A′)≲740214 < m(A') \lesssim 740 MeV and 10.6<m(A′)≲3010.6 < m(A') \lesssim 30 GeV. The search for long-lived A′ ⁣→ ⁣μ+μ−A'\!\to\!μ^+μ^- decays places world-leading constraints on low-mass dark photons with lifetimes O(1)\mathcal{O}(1) ps.

Search for the lepton flavour violating decay B+→K+μ−τ+B^+ \rightarrow K^+ μ^- τ^+ using Bs2∗0B_{s2}^{*0} decays

The four-momentum of the ττ lepton is determined by using B+B^+ mesons from Bs2∗0→B+K−B_{s2}^{*0} \rightarrow B^+ K^- decays. No significant excess is observed, and an upper limit is set on the branching fraction B(B+→K+μ−τ+)<3.9×10−5B(B^+ \rightarrow K^+ μ^- τ^+) < 3.9 \times 10^{-5} at 90% confidence level. The Singular Hydrodynamic Interactions Between Two Spheres In Stokes Flow

We study exact solutions for the slow viscous flow of an infinite liquid caused by two rigid spheres approaching each either along or parallel to their line of centres, valid at all separations. This goes beyond the applicable range of existing solutions for singular hydrodynamic interactions (HIs) which, for practical applications, are limited to the near-contact or far field region of the flow. For the normal component of the HI, by use of a bipolar coordinate system, we derive the stream function for the flow as Re→0Re\to 0 and a formula for the singular (squeeze) force between the spheres as an infinite series. We also obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the forces as the nondimensional separation between the spheres goes to zero and infinity, rigorously confirming and improving upon known results relevant to a widely accepted lubrication theory. Additionally, we recover the force on a sphere moving perpendicularly to a plane as a special case. For the tangential component, again by using a bipolar coordinate system, we obtain the corresponding infinite series expression of the (shear) singular force between the spheres. All results hold for retreating spheres, consistent with the reversibility of Stokes flow. We demonstrate substantial differences in numerical simulations of colloidal fluids when using the present theory compared with existing multipole methods. Furthermore, we show that the present theory preserves positive definiteness of the resistance matrix R\boldsymbol{R} in a number of situations in which positivity is destroyed for multipole/perturbative methods.

Ubiquitous velocity fluctuations throughout the molecular interstellar medium

The density structure of the interstellar medium (ISM) determines where stars form and release energy, momentum, and heavy elements, driving galaxy evolution. Density variations are seeded and amplified by gas motion, but the exact nature of this motion is unknown across spatial scale and galactic environment. Although dense star-forming gas likely emerges from a combination of instabilities, convergent flows, and turbulence, establishing the precise origin is challenging because it requires quantifying gas motion over many orders of magnitude in spatial scale. Here we measure the motion of molecular gas in the Milky Way and in nearby galaxy NGC 4321, assembling observations that span an unprecedented spatial dynamic range (10−1−10310^{-1}{-}10^3 pc). We detect ubiquitous velocity fluctuations across all spatial scales and galactic environments. Statistical analysis of these fluctuations indicates how star-forming gas is assembled. We discover oscillatory gas flows with wavelengths ranging from 0.3−4000.3{-}400 pc. These flows are coupled to regularly-spaced density enhancements that likely form via gravitational instabilities. We also identify stochastic and scale-free velocity and density fluctuations, consistent with the structure generated in turbulent flows. Our results demonstrate that ISM structure cannot be considered in isolation. Instead, its formation and evolution is controlled by nested, interdependent flows of matter covering many orders of magnitude in spatial scale.

Updated measurement of decay-time-dependent CP asymmetries in D0→K+K−D^0 \to K^+K^- and D0→π+π−D^0 \to π^+π^- decays

A search for decay-time-dependent charge-parity (CPCP) asymmetry in D0→K+K−D^0 \to K^+K^- and D0→π+π−D^0 \to π^+π^- decays is performed at the LHCb experiment using proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4fb−1^{-1}. The D0D^0 mesons are required to originate from semileptonic decays of bb hadrons, such that the charge of the muon identifies the flavor of the neutral DD meson at production. The asymmetries in the effective decay widths of D0D^0 and D‾0\overline{D}^0 mesons are determined to be AΓ(K+K−)=(−4.3±3.6±0.5)×10−4A_Γ(K^+K^-) = ( -4.3 \pm 3.6 \pm 0.5 )\times 10^{-4} and AΓ(π+π−)=(2.2±7.0±0.8)×10−4A_Γ(π^+π^-) = ( 2.2 \pm 7.0 \pm 0.8)\times 10^{-4}, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The results are consistent with CPCP symmetry and, when combined with previous LHCb results, yield AΓ(K+K−)=(−4.4±2.3±0.6)×10−4A_Γ(K^+K^-) = ( -4.4 \pm 2.3 \pm 0.6 )\times 10^{-4} and AΓ(π+π−)=(2.5±4.3±0.7)×10−4A_Γ(π^+π^-) = ( 2.5 \pm 4.3 \pm 0.7)\times 10^{-4}.

Updated measurement of time-dependent CPCP-violating observables in Bs0→J/ψK+K−B^{0}_{s}\to J/ψK^+ K^- decays

The decay-time-dependent CPCP asymmetry in Bs0→J/ψK+K−B^{0}_{s}\to J/ψK^{+} K^{-} decays is measured using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.9 fb−11.9\,\mathrm{fb^{-1}}, collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV13\,\mathrm{TeV} in 2015 and 2016. Using a sample of approximately 117\,000 signal decays with an invariant K+K−K^{+} K^{-} mass in the vicinity of the ϕ(1020)ϕ(1020) resonance, the CPCP-violating phase ϕsϕ_s is measured, along with the difference in decay widths of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the Bs0B^{0}_{s}-Bˉs0\bar{B}^{0}_{s} system, ΔΓsΔΓ_s. The difference of the average Bs0B^{0}_{s} and B0B^{0} meson decay widths, Γs−ΓdΓ_s-Γ_d, is determined using in addition a sample of B0→J/ψK+π−B^{0} \to J/ψK^{+} π^{-} decays. The values obtained are ϕs=−0.083±0.041±0.006 radϕ_s = -0.083\pm0.041\pm0.006\,\mathrm{rad}, ΔΓs=0.077±0.008±0.003 ps−1ΔΓ_s = 0.077 \pm 0.008 \pm 0.003\, \mathrm{ps^{-1}} and Γs−Γd=−0.0041±0.0024±0.0015 ps−1Γ_s-Γ_d = -0.0041 \pm 0.0024 \pm 0.0015\,\mathrm{ps^{-1}}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements of these quantities to date and are consistent with expectations based on the Standard Model and with a previous LHCb analysis of this decay using data recorded at centre-of-mass energies 7 and 8 TeV. Finally, the results are combined with recent results from Bs0→J/ψπ+π−B^{0}_{s}\to J/ψπ^{+} π^{-} decays obtained using the same dataset as this analysis, and with previous independent LHCb results.

Benchmark tests of a strongly constrained semilocal functional with a long-range dispersion correction

The strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) semilocal density functional [J. Sun, A. Ruzsinszky, J. P. Perdew \textit{Phys. Rev. Lett.} {\bf 115}, 036402 (2015)] obeys all 17 known exact constraints for meta-generalized-gradient approximations (meta-GGA) and includes some medium range correlation effects. Long-range London dispersion interactions are still missing, but can be accounted for via an appropriate correction scheme. In this study, we combine SCAN with an efficient London dispersion correction and show that lattice energies of simple organic crystals can be improved with the applied correction by 50\%. The London-dispersion corrected SCAN meta-GGA outperforms all other tested London-dispersion corrected meta-GGAs for molecular geometries. Our new method delivers mean absolute deviations (MADs) for main group bond lengths that are consistently below 1\,pm, rotational constants with MADs of 0.2\%, and noncovalent distances with MADs below 1\%. For a large database of general main group thermochemistry and kinetics, it also delivers a weighted mean absolute deviation below 4 kcal/mol, one of the lowest for long-range corrected meta-GGA functionals. We also discuss some consequences of numerical sensitivity encountered for meta-GGAs.

Measurement of higher cumulants of net-charge multiplicity distributions in Au++Au collisions at sNN=7.7−200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7-200 GeV

We report the measurement of cumulants (Cn,n=1…4C_n, n=1\ldots4) of the net-charge distributions measured within pseudorapidity (∣η∣<0.35|η|<0.35) in Au++Au collisions at sNN=7.7−200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7-200 GeV with the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The ratios of cumulants (e.g. C1/C2C_1/C_2, C3/C1C_3/C_1) of the net-charge distributions, which can be related to volume independent susceptibility ratios, are studied as a function of centrality and energy. These quantities are important to understand the quantum-chromodynamics phase diagram and possible existence of a critical end point. The measured values are very well described by expectation from negative binomial distributions. We do not observe any nonmonotonic behavior in the ratios of the cumulants as a function of collision energy. The measured values of C1/C2=μ/σ2C_1/C_2 = μ/σ^2 and C3/C1=Sσ3/μC_3/C_1 = Sσ^3/μ can be directly compared to lattice quantum-chromodynamics calculations and thus allow extraction of both the chemical freeze-out temperature and the baryon chemical potential at each center-of-mass energy.

Measurement of parity-violating spin asymmetries in W±^{\pm} production at midrapidity in longitudinally polarized pp++pp collisions

We present measurements from the PHENIX experiment of large parity-violating single spin asymmetries of high transverse momentum electrons and positrons from W±/ZW^\pm/Z decays, produced in longitudinally polarized pp++pp collisions at center of mass energies of s\sqrt{s}=500 and 510~GeV. These asymmetries allow direct access to the anti-quark polarized parton distribution functions due to the parity-violating nature of the WW-boson coupling to quarks and anti-quarks. The results presented are based on data collected in 2011, 2012, and 2013 with an integrated luminosity of 240 pb−1^{-1}, which exceeds previous PHENIX published results by a factor of more than 27. These high Q2Q^2 data provide an important addition to our understanding of anti-quark parton helicity distribution functions.

Transverse energy production and charged-particle multiplicity at midrapidity in various systems from sNN=7.7\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7 to 200 GeV

Measurements of midrapidity charged particle multiplicity distributions, dNch/dηdN_{\rm ch}/dη, and midrapidity transverse-energy distributions, dET/dηdE_T/dη, are presented for a variety of collision systems and energies. Included are distributions for Au++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200, 130, 62.4, 39, 27, 19.6, 14.5, and 7.7 GeV, Cu++Cu collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 and 62.4 GeV, Cu++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV, U++U collisions at sNN=193\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193 GeV, dd++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV, 3^{3}He++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV, and pp++pp collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. Centrality-dependent distributions at midrapidity are presented in terms of the number of nucleon participants, NpartN_{\rm part}, and the number of constituent quark participants, NqpN_{q{\rm p}}. For all AA++AA collisions down to sNN=7.7\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7 GeV, it is observed that the midrapidity data are better described by scaling with NqpN_{q{\rm p}} than scaling with NpartN_{\rm part}. Also presented are estimates of the Bjorken energy density, εBJ\varepsilon_{\rm BJ}, and the ratio of dET/dηdE_T/dη to dNch/dηdN_{\rm ch}/dη, the latter of which is seen to be constant as a function of centrality for all systems.

An Upgrade Proposal from the PHENIX Collaboration

In this document the PHENIX collaboration proposes a major upgrade to the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. This upgrade, sPHENIX, enables an extremely rich jet and beauty quarkonia physics program addressing fundamental questions about the nature of the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP), discovered experimentally at RHIC to be a perfect fluid. The startling dynamics of the QGP on fluid-like length scales is an emergent property of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), seemingly implicit in the Lagrangian but stubbornly hidden from view. QCD is an asymptotically free theory, but how QCD manifests as a strongly coupled fluid with specific shear viscosity near TCT_C, as low as allowed by the uncertainty principle, is as fundamental an issue as that of how confinement itself arises.

Search for dark photons from neutral meson decays in pp++pp and dd++Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV

The standard model (SM) of particle physics is spectacularly successful, yet the measured value of the muon anomalous magnetic moment (g−2)μ(g-2)_μ deviates from SM calculations by 3.6σσ. Several theoretical models attribute this to the existence of a "dark photon," an additional U(1) gauge boson, which is weakly coupled to ordinary photons. The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has searched for a dark photon, UU, in π0,η→γe+e−π^0,η\rightarrow γe^+e^- decays and obtained upper limits of O(2×10−6)\mathcal{O}(2\times10^{-6}) on UU-γγ mixing at 90% CL for the mass range 30<mU<9030<m_U<90 MeV/c2c^2. Combined with other experimental limits, the remaining region in the UU-γγ mixing parameter space that can explain the (g−2)μ(g-2)_μ deviation from its SM value is nearly completely excluded at the 90% confidence level, with only a small region of 29<mU<3229<m_U<32 MeV/c2c^2 remaining.

Single crystal x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity measurements are reported for the new tetragonal compound Ce2_{2}PdGe3_{3}, which forms in the space group P42/mmcP4_{2}/mmc (\#131) −- a relative of the αα-ThSi2_2-type structure. Measurements reveal a two-part antiferromagnetic phase transition at TN,1T_{\rm{N,1}} == 10.7 K and TN,2T_{\rm{N,2}} == 9.6 K and subsequent ferromagnetic ordering near TCT_{\rm{C}} ≈\approx 2.25 K. The ordered ground state emerges from a lattice of Ce ions that are hybridized with the conduction electrons, as revealed by the enhanced electronic coefficient of the specific heat γγ ≈\approx 50 mJ/mol-Ce-K2^2 (extrapolated to TT == 0 for TT << TCT_{\rm{C}}). Electronic structure calculations suggest that there is significant f-electron weight in the density of states near the Fermi energy and that the Fermi surface includes sheets with distinct nesting vectors. Chemical/structural disorder also plays an important role, as evidenced by results from single crystal x-ray diffraction, the width of the peaks in the heat capacity at TNT_{\rm{N}} and TCT_{\rm{C}}, and the small residual resistivity ratio RRR == ρ300Kρ_{\rm{300K}}/ρ0ρ_{\rm{0}} == 1.8.

Nuclear matter effects on J/ψJ/ψ production in asymmetric Cu+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 200 GeV

We report on J/ψJ/ψ production from asymmetric Cu+Au heavy-ion collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at both forward (Cu-going direction) and backward (Au-going direction) rapidities. The nuclear modification of J/ψJ/ψ yields in Cu++Au collisions in the Au-going direction is found to be comparable to that in Au++Au collisions when plotted as a function of the number of participating nucleons. In the Cu-going direction, J/ψJ/ψ production shows a stronger suppression. This difference is comparable in magnitude and has the same sign as the difference expected from shadowing effects due to stronger low-xx gluon suppression in the larger Au nucleus. The relative suppression is opposite to that expected from hot nuclear matter dissociation, since a higher energy density is expected in the Au-going direction.

Combining the in situ electron measurements and remote-sensing solar observations, as well as the calculated magnetic fields obtained from a potential-field source-surface model, we demonstrate that the jets associated with the hard X-ray flares and type-III radio bursts, rather than the slow and partial coronal mass ejections, are closely related to the production of interplanetary electron streams. The jets, originated from the well-connected active region (AR 10939) whose magnetic polarity structure favors the eruption, are observed to be forming in a coronal site, extending to a few solar radii, and having a good temporal correlation with the electron solar release. The open-field lines near the jet site are rooted in a negative polarity, along which energetic particles escape from the flaring AR to the near-Earth space, consistent with the in situ electron pitch angle distribution. The analysis enables us to propose a coronal magnetic topology relating the impulsive SEP events to their solar source.

Superconductivity with extremely large upper critical fields in Nb2Pd0.81S5

Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity in a new transition metal-chalcogenide compound, i.e. Nb2Pd0.81S5, with a transition temperature Tc > 6.6 K. Despite its relatively low Tc, it displays remarkably high and anisotropic superconducting upper critical fields, e.g. mu_0 H_{c2} (T approaching 0 K). 37 T for fields applied along the crystallographic b-axis. For a field applied perpendicularly to the b-axis, mu_0 H_{c2} shows a linear dependence in temperature which coupled to a temperature-dependent anisotropy of the upper critical fields, suggests that Nb2Pd0.81S5 is a multi-band superconductor. This is consistent with band structure calculations which reveal nearly cylindrical and quasi-one-dimensional Fermi surface sheets having hole and electron character, respectively. The static spin susceptibility as calculated through the random phase approximation, reveals strong peaks suggesting proximity to a magnetic state and therefore the possibility of unconventional superconductivity.

Tidal Waves in 102^{102}Pd: A Rotating Condensate of Multiple dd bosons

Low-lying collective excitations in even-even vibrational and transitional nuclei may be described semi-classically as quadrupole running waves on the surface of the nucleus ("tidal waves"), and the observed vibrational-rotational behavior can be thought of as resulting from a rotating condensate of interacting dd bosons. These concepts have been investigated by measuring lifetimes of the levels in the yrast band of the 102^{102}Pd nucleus with the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method. The extracted B(E2)B(E2) reduced transition probabilities for the yrast band display a monotonic increase with spin, in agreement with the interpretation based on rotation-induced condensation of aligned dd bosons.

J/psi suppression at forward rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=39 and 62.4 GeV

We present measurements of the J/psi invariant yields in sqrt(s_NN)=39 and 62.4 GeV Au+Au collisions at forward rapidity (1.2<|y|<2.2). Invariant yields are presented as a function of both collision centrality and transverse momentum. Nuclear modifications are obtained for central relative to peripheral Au+Au collisions (R_CP) and for various centrality selections in Au+Au relative to scaled p+p cross sections obtained from other measurements (R_AA). The observed suppression patterns at 39 and 62.4 GeV are quite similar to those previously measured at 200 GeV. This similar suppression presents a challenge to theoretical models that contain various competing mechanisms with different energy dependencies, some of which cause suppression and others enhancement.

Medium modification of jet fragmentation in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV measured in direct photon-hadron correlations

The jet fragmentation function is measured with direct photon-hadron correlations in p+p and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The p_T of the photon is an excellent approximation to the initial p_T of the jet and the ratio z_T=p_T^h/p_T^γis used as a proxy for the jet fragmentation function. A statistical subtraction is used to extract the direct photon-hadron yields in Au+Au collisions while a photon isolation cut is applied in p+p. I_ AA, the ratio of jet fragment yield in Au+Au to that in p+p, indicates modification of the jet fragmentation function. Suppression, most likely due to energy loss in the medium, is seen at high z_T. The fragment yield at low z_T is enhanced at large angles. Such a trend is expected from redistribution of the lost energy into increased production of low-momentum particles.

sPHENIX: An Upgrade Concept from the PHENIX Collaboration

The PHENIX collaboration presents a concept for a major upgrade to the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). This upgrade, referred to as sPHENIX, brings exciting new capability to the RHIC program by opening new and important channels for experimental investigation and utilizing fully the luminosity of the recently upgraded RHIC facility. sPHENIX enables a compelling jet physics program that will address fundamental questions about the nature of the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma discovered experimentally at RHIC to be a perfect fluid. The upgrade concept addresses specific questions whose answers are necessary to advance our understanding of the quark-gluon plasma: (1) How to reconcile the observed strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma with the asymptotically free theory of quarks and gluons? (2) What are the dynamical changes to the quark-gluon plasma in terms of quasiparticles and excitations as a function of temperature? (3) How sharp is the transition of the quark-gluon plasma from the most strongly coupled regime near Tc to a weakly coupled system of partons known to emerge at asymptotically high temperatures? In three Appendices, we detail the additional physics capabilities gained through further upgrades: (A) two midrapidity detector additions, (B) a forward rapidity upgrade, and (C) an evolution to an ePHENIX detector suitable for a future Electron Ion Collider at RHIC.

Design, Construction, Operation and Performance of a Hadron Blind Detector for the PHENIX Experiment

A Hadron Blind Detector (HBD) has been developed, constructed and successfully operated within the PHENIX detector at RHIC. The HBD is a Cherenkov detector operated with pure CF4. It has a 50 cm long radiator directly coupled in a window- less configuration to a readout element consisting of a triple GEM stack, with a CsI photocathode evaporated on the top surface of the top GEM and pad readout at the bottom of the stack. This paper gives a comprehensive account of the construction, operation and in-beam performance of the detector.

Measured g factors and the tidal-wave description of transitional nuclei near A = 100

The transient-field technique has been used in both conventional kinematics and inverse kinematics to measure the g factors of the 2+ states in the stable even isotopes of Ru, Pd and Cd. The statistical precision of the g(2+) values has been significantly improved, allowing a critical comparison with the tidal-wave version of the cranking model recently proposed for transitional nuclei in this region.

Tidal Waves -- a non-adiabatic microscopic description of the yrast states in near-spherical nuclei

The yrast states of nuclei that are spherical or weakly deformed in their ground states are described as quadrupole waves running over the nuclear surface, which we call "tidal waves". The energies and E2 transition probabilities of the yrast states in nuclides with ZZ= 44, 46, 48 and N=56, 58,...,66N=56, ~58,..., 66 are calculated by means of the cranking model in a microscopic way. The nonlinear response of the nucleonic orbitals results in a strong coupling between shape and single particle degrees of freedom.

Cross Section and Parity Violating Spin Asymmetries of W^+/- Boson Production in Polarized p+p Collisions at sqrt(s)=500 GeV

Large parity violating longitudinal single spin asymmetries A^{e^-}_L= -0.86^{+0.14}_{-0.30} and A^{e^+}_L= 0.88^{+0.12}_{-0.71} are observed for inclusive high transverse momentum electrons and positrons in polarized pp collisions at a center of mass energy of \sqrt{s}=500\ GeV with the PHENIX detector at RHIC. These e^{+/-} come mainly from the decay of W^{+/-} and Z^0 bosons, and the asymmetries directly demonstrate parity violation in the couplings of the W^{\pm} to the light quarks. The observed electron and positron yields were used to estimate W^\pm boson production cross sections equal to σ(pp \to W^+ X) \times BR(W^ \to ν_e)= 144.1+/-21.2(stat)^{+3.4}_{-10.3}(syst) +/- 15%(norm) pb, and σ(pp \to W^{-}X) \times BR(W^\to e^-\bar{ν_e}) = 31.7+/-12.1(stat)^{+10.1}_{-8.2}(syst)+/-15%(norm) pb.

Tidal waves as yrast states in transitional nuclei

The yrast states of transitional nuclei are described as quadrupole waves running over the nuclear surface, which we call tidal waves. In contrast to a rotor, which generates angular momentum by increasing the angular velocity at approximately constant deformation, a tidal wave generates angular momentum by increasing the deformation at approximately constant angular velocity. The properties of the tidal waves are calculated by means of the cranking model in a microscopic way. The calculated energies and E2 transition probabilities of the yrast states in the transitional nuclides with ZZ= 44, 46, 48 and N=56,58,...,66N=56, 58, ..., 66 reproduce the experiment in detail. The nonlinear response of the nucleonic orbitals results in a strong coupling between shape and single particle degrees of freedom.

Outflows at the Edges of an Active Region in a Coronal Hole: A Signature of Active Region Expansion?

Outflows of plasma at the edges of active regions surrounded by quiet Sun are now a common observation with the Hinode satellite. While there is observational evidence to suggest that the outflows are originating in the magnetic field surrounding the active regions, there is no conclusive evidence that reveals how they are driven. Motivated by observations of outflows at the periphery of a mature active region embedded in a coronal hole, we have used a three-dimensional simulation to emulate the active region's development in order to investigate the origin and driver of these outflows. We find outflows are accelerated from a site in the coronal hole magnetic field immediately surrounding the active region and are channelled along the coronal hole field as they rise through the atmosphere. The plasma is accelerated simply as a result of the active region expanding horizontally as it develops. Many of the characteristics of the outflows generated in the simulation are consistent with those of observed outflows: velocities up to 45 km per sec, properties akin to the coronal hole, proximity to the active region's draining loops, expansion with height, and projection over monopolar photospheric magnetic concentrations. Although the horizontal expansion occurs as a consequence of the active region's development in the simulation, expansion is also a general feature of established active regions. Hence, it is entirely possible and plausible that the expansion acceleration mechanism displayed in the simulation is occurring in active regions on the Sun and, in addition to reconnection, is driving the outflows observed at their edges.
