Measurement of ϕϕ-meson production in Cu++Au at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV and U++U at sNN=193\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193 GeV

The PHENIX experiment reports systematic measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider of ϕϕ-meson production in asymmetric Cu++Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV and in U++U collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193 GeV. Measurements were performed via the ϕ→K+K−ϕ\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-} decay channel at midrapidity ∣η∣<0.35|η|<0.35. Features of ϕϕ-meson production measured in Cu++Cu, Cu++Au, Au++Au, and U++U collisions were found to not depend on the collision geometry, which was expected because the yields are averaged over the azimuthal angle and follow the expected scaling with nuclear-overlap size. The elliptic flow of the ϕϕ meson in Cu++Au, Au++Au, and U++U collisions scales with second-order-participant eccentricity and the length scale of the nuclear-overlap region (estimated with the number of participating nucleons). At moderate pTp_T, ϕϕ-meson production measured in Cu++Au and U++U collisions is consistent with coalescence-model predictions, whereas at high pTp_T the production is in agreement with expectations for in-medium energy loss of parent partons prior to their fragmentation. The elliptic flow for ϕϕ mesons measured in Cu++Au and U++U collisions is well described by a (2+1)D viscous-hydrodynamic model with specific-shear viscosity η/s=1/4πη/s=1/4π.

Characterization of the correlated background for a sterile neutrino search using the first dataset of the JSNS2^2 experiment

JSNS2^2 (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) is an experiment that is searching for sterile neutrinos via the observation of νˉμ→νˉe\barν_μ \to \barν_{e} appearance oscillations using muon decay-at-rest neutrinos. Before dedicated data taking in the first-half of 2021, we performed a commissioning run for 10 days in June 2020. Using the data obtained in this commissioning run, in this paper, we present an estimate of the correlated background which imitates the νˉe\barν_{e} signal in a sterile neutrino search. In addition, in order to demonstrate future prospects of the JSNS2^2 experiment, possible pulse shape discrimination improvements towards reducing cosmic ray induced fast neutron background are described.

Kinematic dependence of azimuthal anisotropies in pp++Au, dd++Au, 3^3He+Au at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 200 GeV

There is strong evidence for the formation of small droplets of quark-gluon plasma in p/d/3p/d/^{3}He+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and in pp+pp/Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. In particular, the analysis of data at RHIC for different geometries obtained by varying the projectile size and shape has proven insightful. In the present analysis, we find excellent agreement with the previously published PHENIX at RHIC results on elliptical and triangular flow with an independent analysis via the two-particle correlation method, which has quite different systematic uncertainties and an independent code base. In addition, the results are extended to other detector combinations with different kinematic (pseudorapidity) coverage. These results provide additional constraints on contributions from nonflow and longitudinal decorrelations.

Measurement of ψ(2S)ψ(2S) nuclear modification at backward and forward rapidity in pp++pp, pp++Al, and pp++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV

Suppression of the J/ψJ/ψ nuclear-modification factor has been seen as a trademark signature of final-state effects in large collision systems for decades. In small systems, the nuclear modification was attributed to cold-nuclear-matter effects until the observation of strong differential suppression of the ψ(2S)ψ(2S) state in p/dp/d++AA collisions suggested the presence of final-state effects. Results of J/ψJ/ψ and ψ(2S)ψ(2S) measurements in the dimuon decay channel are presented here for pp++pp, pp++Al, and pp++Au collision systems at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. The results are predominantly shown in the form of the nuclear-modification factor, RpAR_{pA}, the ratio of the ψ(2S)ψ(2S) invariant yield per nucleon-nucleon collision in collisions of proton on target nucleus to that in pp++pp collisions. Measurements of the J/ψJ/ψ and ψ(2S)ψ(2S) nuclear-modification factor are compared with shadowing and transport-model predictions, as well as to complementary measurements at Large-Hadron-Collider energies.

Measurement of cosmogenic 9^9Li and 8^8He production rates at RENO

We report the measured production rates of unstable isotopes 9^9Li and 8^8He produced by cosmic muon spallation on 12^{12}C using two identical detectors of the RENO experiment. Their beta-decays accompanied by a neutron make a significant contribution to backgrounds of reactor antineutrino events in precise determination of the smallest neutrino mixing angle. The mean muon energy of its near (far) detector with an overburden of 120 (450) m.w.e. is estimated as 33.1 +- 2.3 (73.6 +- 4.4) GeV. Based on roughly 3100 days of data, the cosmogenic production rate of 9^9Li (8^8He) isotope is measured to be 44.2 +- 3.1 (10.6 +- 7.4) per day at near detector and 10.0 +- 1.1 (2.1 +- 1.5) per day at far detector. This corresponds to yields of 9^9Li (8^8He), 4.80 +- 0.36 (1.15 +- 0.81) and 9.9 +- 1.1 (2.1 +- 1.5) at near and far detectors, respectively, in a unit of 10−8^{-8} μ−1μ^{-1} g−1{^-1} cm2{^2}. Combining the measured 9^9Li yields with other available underground measurements, an excellent power-law relationship of the yield with respect to the mean muon energy is found to have an exponent of αα = 0.75 +- 0.05.

Study of ϕϕ-meson production in pp++Al, pp++Au, dd++Au, and 3^3He++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV

Small nuclear collisions are mainly sensitive to cold-nuclear-matter effects; however, the collective behavior observed in these collisions shows a hint of hot-nuclear-matter effects. The identified-particle spectra, especially the ϕϕ mesons which contain strange and antistrange quarks and have a relatively small hadronic-interaction cross section, are a good tool to study these effects. The PHENIX experiment has measured ϕϕ mesons in a specific set of small collision systems pp++Al, pp++Au, and 3^3He++Au, as well as dd++Au [Phys. Rev. C {\bf 83}, 024909 (2011)], at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. The transverse-momentum spectra and nuclear-modification factors are presented and compared to theoretical-model predictions. The comparisons with different calculations suggest that quark-gluon plasma may be formed in these small collision systems at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. However, the volume and the lifetime of the produced medium may be insufficient for observing strangeness-enhancement and jet-quenching effects. Comparison with calculations suggests that the main production mechanisms of ϕϕ mesons at midrapidity may be different in pp++Al versus p/d/p/d/3^3He++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. While thermal quark recombination seems to dominate in p/d/p/d/3^3He++Au collisions, fragmentation seems to be the main production mechanism in pp++Al collisions.

Systematic study of nuclear effects in pp++Al, pp++Au, dd++Au, and 3^{3}He++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV using π0π^0 production

The PHENIX collaboration presents a systematic study of π0π^0 production from pp++pp, pp++Al, pp++Au, dd++Au, and 3^{3}He++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. Measurements were performed with different centrality selections as well as the total inelastic, 0%--100%, selection for all collision systems. For 0%--100% collisions, the nuclear modification factors, RxAR_{xA}, are consistent with unity for pTp_T above 8 GeV/cc, but exhibit an enhancement in peripheral collisions and a suppression in central collisions. The enhancement and suppression characteristics are similar for all systems for the same centrality class. It is shown that for high-pTp_T-π0π^0 production, the nucleons in the dd and 3^3He interact mostly independently with the Au nucleus and that the counter intuitive centrality dependence is likely due to a physical correlation between multiplicity and the presence of a hard scattering process. These observations disfavor models where parton energy loss has a significant contribution to nuclear modifications in small systems. Nuclear modifications at lower pTp_T resemble the Cronin effect -- an increase followed by a peak in central or inelastic collisions and a plateau in peripheral collisions. The peak height has a characteristic ordering by system size as pp++Au >> dd++Au >> 3^{3}He++Au >> pp++Al. For collisions with Au ions, current calculations based on initial state cold nuclear matter effects result in the opposite order, suggesting the presence of other contributions to nuclear modifications, in particular at lower pTp_T.

Transverse-single-spin asymmetries of charged pions at midrapidity in transversely polarized p+pp{+}p collisions at s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV

In 2015, the PHENIX collaboration has measured single-spin asymmetries for charged pions in transversely polarized proton-proton collisions at the center of mass energy of s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV. The pions were detected at central rapidities of ∣η∣<0.35|η|<0.35. The single-spin asymmetries are consistent with zero for each charge individually, as well as consistent with the previously published neutral-pion asymmetries in the same rapidity range. However, they show a slight indication of charge-dependent differences which may suggest a flavor dependence in the underlying mechanisms that create these asymmetries.

Transverse momentum dependent forward neutron single spin asymmetries in transversely polarized pp++pp collisions at s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV

In 2015, the PHENIX collaboration has measured very forward (η>6.8η>6.8) single-spin asymmetries of inclusive neutrons in transversely polarized proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at a center of mass energy of 200 GeV. A previous publication from this data set concentrated on the nuclear dependence of such asymmetries. In this measurement the explicit transverse-momentum dependence of inclusive neutron single spin asymmetries for proton-proton collisions is extracted using a bootstrapping-unfolding technique on the transverse momenta. This explicit transverse-momentum dependence will help improve the understanding of the mechanisms that create these asymmetries.

Measurement of J/ψJ/ψ at forward and backward rapidity in pp+pp, pp+A+Al, pp+A+Au, and 3^3He+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200~{\rm GeV}

Charmonium is a valuable probe in heavy-ion collisions to study the properties of the quark gluon plasma, and is also an interesting probe in small collision systems to study cold nuclear matter effects, which are also present in large collision systems. With the recent observations of collective behavior of produced particles in small system collisions, measurements of the modification of charmonium in small systems have become increasingly relevant. We present the results of J/ψJ/ψ measurements at forward and backward rapidity in various small collision systems, pp++pp, pp++Al, pp++Au and 3^3He++Au, at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. The results are presented in the form of the observable RABR_{AB}, the nuclear modification factor, a measure of the ratio of the J/ψJ/ψ invariant yield compared to the scaled yield in pp++pp collisions. We examine the rapidity, transverse momentum, and collision centrality dependence of nuclear effects on J/ψJ/ψ production with different projectile sizes pp and 3^3He, and different target sizes Al and Au. The modification is found to be strongly dependent on the target size, but to be very similar for pp++Au and 3^{3}He++Au. However, for 0%--20% central collisions at backward rapidity, the modification for 3^{3}He++Au is found to be smaller than that for pp++Au, with a mean fit to the ratio of 0.89±0.030.89\pm0.03(stat)±0.08{\pm}0.08(syst), possibly indicating final state effects due to the larger projectile size.

Nuclear-modification factor of charged hadrons at forward and backward rapidity in pp++Al and pp++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV

The PHENIX experiment has studied nuclear effects in pp++Al and pp++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV on charged hadron production at forward rapidity (1.4<η<2.41.4<η<2.4, pp-going direction) and backward rapidity (−2.2<η<−1.2-2.2<η<-1.2, AA-going direction). Such effects are quantified by measuring nuclear modification factors as a function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity in various collision multiplicity selections. In central pp++Al and pp++Au collisions, a suppression (enhancement) is observed at forward (backward) rapidity compared to the binary scaled yields in pp+pp collisions. The magnitude of enhancement at backward rapidity is larger in pp++Au collisions than in pp++Al collisions, which have a smaller number of participating nucleons. However, the results at forward rapidity show a similar suppression within uncertainties. The results in the integrated centrality are compared with calculations using nuclear parton distribution functions, which show a reasonable agreement at the forward rapidity but fail to describe the backward rapidity enhancement.

Performance of PMTs for the JSNS2 experiment

The JSNS2^{2} (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment aims to search for neutrino oscillations over a 24\,m short baseline at J-PARC. The JSNS2^{2} inner detector is filled with 17 tons of gadolinium-loaded liquid scintillator (LS) and both the intermediate γγ-catcher and the optically separated outer veto are filled with un-loaded LS. Optical photons from scintillation are observed by 120 Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs). A total of 130 PMTs for the JSNS2 experiment were both donated by other experiments and purchased from Hamamatsu. Donated PMTs were purchased around 10 years ago, therefore JSNS2^{2} did pre-calibration of the PMTs including the purchased PMTs. 123 PMTs demonstrated acceptable performance for the JSNS2^{2} experiment, and 120 PMTs were installed in the detector.

Production and optical properties of liquid scintillator for the JSNS2^{2} experiment

The JSNS2^{2} (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment will search for neutrino oscillations over a 24 m short baseline at J-PARC. The JSNS2^{2} inner detector will be filled with 17 tons of gadolinium-loaded liquid scintillator (LS) with an additional 31 tons of unloaded LS in the intermediate γγ-catcher and outer veto volumes. JSNS2^{2} has chosen Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) as an organic solvent because of its chemical properties. The unloaded LS was produced at a refurbished facility, originally used for scintillator production by the RENO experiment. JSNS2^{2} plans to use ISO tanks for the storage and transportation of the LS. In this paper, we describe the LS production, and present measurements of its optical properties and long term stability. Our measurements show that storing the LS in ISO tanks does not result in degradation of its optical properties.

The JSNS2^{2} data acquisition system

The JSNS2^{2} (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment aims to search for neutrino oscillations over a 24 m short baseline at J-PARC. The JSNS2^{2} inner detector is filled with 17 tons of gadolinium(Gd)-loaded liquid scintillator (LS) with an additional 31 tons of unloaded LS in the intermediate γγ-catcher and an optically separated outer veto volumes. A total of 120 10-inch photomultiplier tubes observe the scintillating optical photons and each analog waveform is stored with the flash analog-to-digital converters. We present details of the data acquisition, processing, and data quality monitoring system. We also present two different trigger logics which are developed for the beam and self-trigger.

Transverse single-spin asymmetry for very forward neutral pion production in polarized p+pp+p collisions at s=510\sqrt{s} = 510 GeV

Transverse single-spin asymmetries of very forward neutral pions generated in polarized p+pp + p collisions allow us to understand the production mechanism in terms of perturbative and non-perturbative strong interactions. During 2017 the RHICf Collaboration installed an electromagnetic calorimeter in the zero-degree region of the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and measured neutral pions produced at pseudorapidity larger than 6 in polarized pp+pp collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 510 GeV. The large non-zero asymmetries increasing both in longitudinal momentum fraction xFx_{F} and transverse momentum pTp_{T} have been observed at low transverse momentum pT<1p_{T} < 1 GeV/cc for the first time at this collision energy. The asymmetries show an approximate xFx_{F} scaling in the pTp_{T} region where non-perturbative processes are expected to dominate. A non-negligible contribution from soft processes may be necessary to explain the nonzero neutral pion asymmetries.

Stainless steel tank production and tests for the JSNS2^2 neutrino detector

This paper describes the design and the construction of the stainless steel tank of the JSNS2^2 detector. The leakage was examined using water and gas after the construction. The new sealing technique with liquid gasket was developed, and its sealing capability was evaluated quantitatively. The result shows over 5 times better value than the tolerance level of leakage.The acceleration measurement during the transportation of the tank shows adequate robustness.These tests prove that the stainless steel tank is feasible to use the real experiment.

Measurement of parity-violating spin asymmetries in W±^{\pm} production at midrapidity in longitudinally polarized pp++pp collisions

We present measurements from the PHENIX experiment of large parity-violating single spin asymmetries of high transverse momentum electrons and positrons from W±/ZW^\pm/Z decays, produced in longitudinally polarized pp++pp collisions at center of mass energies of s\sqrt{s}=500 and 510~GeV. These asymmetries allow direct access to the anti-quark polarized parton distribution functions due to the parity-violating nature of the WW-boson coupling to quarks and anti-quarks. The results presented are based on data collected in 2011, 2012, and 2013 with an integrated luminosity of 240 pb−1^{-1}, which exceeds previous PHENIX published results by a factor of more than 27. These high Q2Q^2 data provide an important addition to our understanding of anti-quark parton helicity distribution functions.

Transverse energy production and charged-particle multiplicity at midrapidity in various systems from sNN=7.7\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7 to 200 GeV

Measurements of midrapidity charged particle multiplicity distributions, dNch/dηdN_{\rm ch}/dη, and midrapidity transverse-energy distributions, dET/dηdE_T/dη, are presented for a variety of collision systems and energies. Included are distributions for Au++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200, 130, 62.4, 39, 27, 19.6, 14.5, and 7.7 GeV, Cu++Cu collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 and 62.4 GeV, Cu++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV, U++U collisions at sNN=193\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193 GeV, dd++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV, 3^{3}He++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV, and pp++pp collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. Centrality-dependent distributions at midrapidity are presented in terms of the number of nucleon participants, NpartN_{\rm part}, and the number of constituent quark participants, NqpN_{q{\rm p}}. For all AA++AA collisions down to sNN=7.7\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7 GeV, it is observed that the midrapidity data are better described by scaling with NqpN_{q{\rm p}} than scaling with NpartN_{\rm part}. Also presented are estimates of the Bjorken energy density, εBJ\varepsilon_{\rm BJ}, and the ratio of dET/dηdE_T/dη to dNch/dηdN_{\rm ch}/dη, the latter of which is seen to be constant as a function of centrality for all systems.

An Upgrade Proposal from the PHENIX Collaboration

In this document the PHENIX collaboration proposes a major upgrade to the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. This upgrade, sPHENIX, enables an extremely rich jet and beauty quarkonia physics program addressing fundamental questions about the nature of the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP), discovered experimentally at RHIC to be a perfect fluid. The startling dynamics of the QGP on fluid-like length scales is an emergent property of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), seemingly implicit in the Lagrangian but stubbornly hidden from view. QCD is an asymptotically free theory, but how QCD manifests as a strongly coupled fluid with specific shear viscosity near TCT_C, as low as allowed by the uncertainty principle, is as fundamental an issue as that of how confinement itself arises.

Slow Control Systems of the Reactor Experiment for Neutrino Oscillation

The RENO experiment has been in operation since August 2011 to measure reactor antineutrino disappearance using identical near and far detectors. For accurate measurements of neutrino mixing parameters and efficient data taking, it is crucial to monitor and control the detector in real time. Environmental conditions also need to be monitored for stable operation of detectors as well as for safety reasons. In this article, we report the design, hardware, operation, and performance of the slow control system.
