A unified Erdős-Pósa theorem for cycles in graphs labelled by multiple abelian groups

In 1965, Erdős and Pósa proved that there is an (approximate) duality between the maximum size of a packing of cycles and the minimum size of a vertex set hitting all cycles. Such a duality does not hold for odd cycles, and Dejter and Neumann-Lara asked in 1988 to find all pairs (ℓ,z){(\ell, z)} of integers where such a duality holds for the family of cycles of length ℓ\ell modulo zz. We characterise all such pairs, and we further generalise this characterisation to cycles in graphs labelled with a bounded number of abelian groups, whose values avoid a bounded number of elements of each group. This unifies almost all known types of cycles that admit such a duality, and it also provides new results. Moreover, we characterise the obstructions to such a duality in this setting, and thereby obtain an analogous characterisation for cycles in graphs embeddable on a fixed compact orientable surface.

Linear bounds on treewidth in terms of excluded planar minors

One of the fundamental results in graph minor theory is that for every planar graph HH, there is a minimum integer f(H)f(H) such that graphs with no minor isomorphic to HH have treewidth at most f(H)f(H). A lower bound for f(H){f(H)} can be obtained by considering the maximum integer kk such that HH contains kk vertex-disjoint cycles. There exists a graph of treewidth Ω(klog⁡k){Ω(k\log k)} which does not contain kk vertex-disjoint cycles, from which it follows that f(H)=Ω(klog⁡k){f(H) = Ω(k\log k)}. In particular, if f(H){f(H)} is linear in ∣V(H)∣{\lvert{V(H)}\rvert} for graphs HH from a subclass of planar graphs, it is necessary that nn-vertex graphs from the class contain at most O(n/log⁡(n)){O(n/\log(n))} vertex-disjoint cycles. We ask whether this is also a sufficient condition, and demonstrate that this is true for classes of planar graphs with bounded component size. For an nn-vertex graph HH which is a disjoint union of rr cycles, we show that f(H)≤3n/2+O(r2log⁡r){f(H) \leq 3n/2 + O(r^2 \log r)}, and improve this to f(H)≤n+O(n){f(H) \leq n + O(\sqrt{n})} when r=2{r = 2}. In particular this bound is linear when r=O(n/log⁡(n)){r=O(\sqrt{n}/\log(n))}. We present a linear bound for f(H){f(H)} when HH is a subdivision of an rr-edge planar graph for any constant rr. We also improve the best known bounds for f(H){f(H)} when HH is the wheel graph or the 4×4{4 \times 4} grid, obtaining a bound of 160160 for the latter.

Product structure of graph classes with bounded treewidth

We show that many graphs with bounded treewidth can be described as subgraphs of the strong product of a graph with smaller treewidth and a bounded-size complete graph. To this end, define the "underlying treewidth" of a graph class G\mathcal{G} to be the minimum non-negative integer cc such that, for some function ff, for every graph G∈G{G \in \mathcal{G}} there is a graph HH with tw(H)≤c{\text{tw}(H) \leq c} such that GG is isomorphic to a subgraph of H⊠Kf(tw(G)){H \boxtimes K_{f(\text{tw}(G))}}. We introduce disjointed coverings of graphs and show they determine the underlying treewidth of any graph class. Using this result, we prove that the class of planar graphs has underlying treewidth 3; the class of Ks,tK_{s,t}-minor-free graphs has underlying treewidth ss (for t≥max⁡{s,3}{t \geq \max\{s,3\}}); and the class of KtK_t-minor-free graphs has underlying treewidth t−2{t-2}. In general, we prove that a monotone class has bounded underlying treewidth if and only if it excludes some fixed topological minor. We also study the underlying treewidth of graph classes defined by an excluded subgraph or excluded induced subgraph. We show that the class of graphs with no HH subgraph has bounded underlying treewidth if and only if every component of HH is a subdivided star, and that the class of graphs with no induced HH subgraph has bounded underlying treewidth if and only if every component of HH is a star.

A unified half-integral Erdős-Pósa theorem for cycles in graphs labelled by multiple abelian groups

Erdős and Pósa proved in 1965 that there is a duality between the maximum size of a packing of cycles and the minimum size of a vertex set hitting all cycles. Such a duality does not hold if we restrict to odd cycles. However, in 1999, Reed proved an analogue for odd cycles by relaxing packing to half-integral packing. We prove a far-reaching generalisation of the theorem of Reed; if the edges of a graph are labelled by finitely many abelian groups, then there is a duality between the maximum size of a half-integral packing of cycles whose values avoid a fixed finite set for each abelian group and the minimum size of a vertex set hitting all such cycles. A multitude of natural properties of cycles can be encoded in this setting, for example cycles of length at least ℓ\ell, cycles of length pp modulo qq, cycles intersecting a prescribed set of vertices at least tt times, and cycles contained in given Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-homology classes in a graph embedded on a fixed surface. Our main result allows us to prove a duality theorem for cycles satisfying a fixed set of finitely many such properties.

An analogue of Edmonds' Branching Theorem for infinite digraphs

We extend Edmonds' Branching Theorem to locally finite infinite digraphs. As examples of Oxley or Aharoni and Thomassen show, this cannot be done using ordinary arborescences, whose underlying graphs are trees. Instead we introduce the notion of pseudo-arborescences and prove a corresponding packing result. Finally, we verify some tree-like properties for these objects, but give also an example that their underlying graphs do in general not correspond to topological trees in the Freudenthal compactification of the underlying multigraph of the digraph.

Characterising kk-connected sets in infinite graphs

A kk-connected set in an infinite graph, where k>0k > 0 is an integer, is a set of vertices such that any two of its subsets of the same size ℓ≤k\ell \leq k can be connected by ℓ\ell disjoint paths in the whole graph. We characterise the existence of kk-connected sets of arbitrary but fixed infinite cardinality via the existence of certain minors and topological minors. We also prove a duality theorem for the existence of such kk-connected sets: if a graph contains no such kk-connected set, then it has a tree-decomposition which, whenever it exists, precludes the existence of such a kk-connected set.
