Amalgamation and Ramsey properties of $L_p$ spaces

We study the dynamics of the group of isometries of $L_p$-spaces. In particular, we study the canonical actions of these groups on the space of $δ$-isometric embeddings of finite dimensional subspaces of $L_p(0,1)$ into itself, and we show that for $p \neq 4,6,8,\ldots$ they are $\varepsilon$-transitive provided that $δ$ is small enough. We achieve this by extending the classical equimeasurability principle of Plotkin and Rudin. We define the central notion of a Fraïssé Banach space which underlies these results and of which the known separable examples are the spaces $L_p(0,1)$, $p \neq 4,6,8,\ldots$ and the Gurarij space. We also give a proof of the Ramsey property of the classes $\{\ell_p^n\}_n$, $p\neq 2,\infty$, viewing it as a multidimensional Borsuk-Ulam statement. We relate this to an arithmetic version of the Dual Ramsey Theorem of Graham and Rothschild as well as to the notion of a spreading vector of Matoušek and Rödl. Finally, we give a version of the Kechris-Pestov-Todorcevic correspondence that links the dynamics of the group of isometries of an approximately ultrahomogeneous space $X$ with a Ramsey property of the collection of finite dimensional subspaces of $X$.

Shellable weakly compact subsets of $C[0,1]$

We show that for every weakly compact subset $K$ of $C[0,1]$ with finite Cantor-Bendixson rank, there is a reflexive Banach lattice $E$ and an operator $T:E\rightarrow C[0,1]$ such that $K\subseteq T(B_E)$. On the other hand, we exhibit an example of a weakly compact set of $C[0,1]$ homeomorphic to $ω^ω+1$ for which such $T$ and $E$ cannot exist. This answers a question of M. Talagrand in the 80's.

A Bourgain-Pisier construction for general Banach spaces

We prove that every Banach space, not necessarily separable, can be isometrically embedded into a $\mathcal L_{\infty}$-space in a way that the corresponding quotient has the Radon-Nikodym and the Schur properties. As a consequence, we obtain $\mathcal L_\infty$ spaces of arbitrary large densities with the Schur and the Radon-Nikodym properties. This extents the a classical result by J. Bourgain and G. Pisier.

Positional graphs and conditional structure of weakly null sequences

We prove that, unless assuming additional set theoretical axioms, there are no reflexive space without unconditional sequences of density the continuum. We give for every integer $n$ there are normalized weakly-null sequences of length $\om_n$ without unconditional subsequences. This together with a result of \cite{Do-Lo-To} shows that $\om_ω$ is the minimal cardinal $κ$ that could possibly have the property that every weakly null $κ$-sequence has an infinite unconditional basic subsequence . We also prove that for every cardinal number $\ka$ which is smaller than the first $\om$-Erdös cardinal there is a normalized weakly-null sequence without subsymmetric subsequences. Finally, we prove that mixed Tsirelson spaces of uncountable densities must always contain isomorphic copies of either $c_0$ or $\ell_p$, with $p\ge 1$.
