Fully-gapped superconducting state in interstitial-carbon-doped Zr5Pt3

We report a comprehensive study of the Zr$_5$Pt$_3$C$_x$ superconductors, with interstitial carbon comprised between 0 and 0.3. At a macroscopic level, their superconductivity, with $T_c$ ranging from 4.5 to 6.3 K, was investigated via electrical-resistivity-, magnetic-susceptibility-, and specific-heat measurements. The upper critical fields $μ_0H_\mathrm{c2}$ $\sim$ 7 T were determined mostly from measurements of the electrical resistivity in applied magnetic fields. The microscopic electronic properties were investigated by means of muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. In the normal state, NMR relaxation data indicate an almost ideal metallic behavior, confirmed by band-structure calculations, which suggest a relatively high electronic density of states at the Fermi level, dominated by the Zr 4$d$ orbitals. The low-temperature superfluid density, obtained via transverse-field $μ$SR, suggests a fully-gapped superconducting state in Zr$_5$Pt$_3$ and Zr$_5$Pt$_3$C$_{0.3}$, with a zero-temperature gap $Δ_0$ = 1.20 and 0.60 meV and a magnetic penetration depth $λ_0$ = 333 and 493 nm, respectively. The exponential dependence of the NMR relaxation rates below $T_c$ further supports a nodeless superconductivity. The absence of spontaneous magnetic fields below the onset of superconductivity, as determined from zero-field $μ$SR measurements, confirms a preserved time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state of Zr$_5$Pt$_3$C$_x$. In contrast to a previous study, our $μ$SR and NMR results suggest a conventional superconductivity in the Zr$_5$Pt$_3$C$_x$ family, independent of the C content.

Multiple- to single-gap superconductivity crossover in Nb$_5$Ir$_{3-x}$Pt$_x$O alloys

By using mostly the muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) technique, we investigate the superconductivity (SC) of Nb$_5$Ir$_{3-x}$Pt$_x$O ($x = 0$ and 1.6) alloys, with $T_c = 10.5$ K and 9.1 K, respectively. At a macroscopic level, their superconductivity was studied by electrical resistivity, magnetization, and specific-heat measurements. In both compounds, the electronic specific heat and the low-temperature superfluid density data suggest a nodeless SC. The superconducting gap value and the specific heat discontinuity at $T_c$ are larger than that expected from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory in the weak-coupling regime, indicating strong-coupling superconductivity in the Nb$_5$Ir$_{3-x}$Pt$_x$O family. In Nb$_5$Ir$_3$O, multigap SC is evidenced by the field dependence of the electronic specific heat coefficient and the superconducting Gaussian relaxation rate, as well as by the temperature dependence of the upper critical field. Pt substitution suppresses one of the gaps, and Nb$_5$Ir$_{1.4}$Pt$_{1.6}$O becomes a single-gap superconductor. By combining our extensive experimental results, we provide evidence for a multiple- to single-gap SC crossover in the Nb$_5$Ir$_{3-x}$Pt$_x$O family.

Hydrogenation of Nd-Fe-B magnet powder under a high pressure of hydrogen

The hydrogenation of Nd2Fe14B under a high pressure of hydrogen has been investigated for the first time. At the heat-treatment temperature of 600 degree C, the almost complete decomposition of Nd2Fe14B into NdH2+x and alpha-Fe is observed, although a rather long heat-treatment time is necessary to achieve the sufficient hydrogenation. The desorption of hydrogen from NdH2+x does not occur in the furnace-cooling process.

Synthesis and physical properties of a new caged compound Ce3Pd20As6 of the C6Cr23-type structure

We have found that Ce3Pd20As6 crystallizes into a cubic C6Cr23-type structure. Combination of electron probe microanalysis of the chemical composition and Rietveld analysis of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern has revealed an inhomogeneous atomic composition of variable stoichiometry. The physical properties of Ce3Pd20As6 were investigated by measuring the magnetization, electrical resistivity and specific heat. The 4f electrons of Ce3+ ions are well localized but do not show phase transition down to 0.5 K. The metallic electrical resistivity shows a weak Kondo screening. The residual resistivity ratio is rather low probably due to the variable stoichiometry. The magnetization curve and magnetic entropy suggest the Gamma_8 quartet crystalline-electric-field ground state at least one of two Ce sites.
