Isotropic Grassmannians, Plücker and Cartan maps

This work is motivated by the relation between the KP and BKP integrable hierarchies, whose $τ$-functions may be viewed as sections of dual determinantal and Pfaffian line bundles over infinite dimensional Grassmannians. In finite dimensions, we show how to relate the Cartan map which, for a vector space $V$ of dimension $N$, embeds the Grassmannian ${\mathrm {Gr}}^0_V(V+V^*)$ of maximal isotropic subspaces of $V+ V^*$, with respect to the natural scalar product, into the projectivization of the exterior space $Λ(V)$, and the Plücker map, which embeds the Grassmannian ${\mathrm {Gr}}_V(V+ V^*)$ of all $N$-planes in $V+ V^*$ into the projectivization of $Λ^N(V + V^*)$. The Plücker coordinates on ${\mathrm {Gr}}^0_V(V+V^*)$ are expressed bilinearly in terms of the Cartan coordinates, which are holomorphic sections of the dual Pfaffian line bundle ${\mathrm {Pf}}^* \rightarrow {\mathrm {Gr}}^0_V(V+V^*, Q)$. In terms of affine coordinates on the big cell, this is equivalent to an identity of Cauchy-Binet type, expressing the determinants of square submatrices of a skew symmetric $N \times N$ matrix as bilinear sums over the Pfaffians of their principal minors.

Matrix model generating function for quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers

The KP $τ$-function of hypergeometric type serving as generating function for quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers is used to compute the Baker function and the corresponding adapted basis elements, expressed as absolutely convergent Laurent seriesin the spectral parameter. These are equivalently expressed as Mellin-Barnes integrals, analogously to Meijer $G$-functions, but with an infinite product of $Γ$-functions as integral kernel. A matrix model representation is derived for the $τ$-function evaluated at trace invariants of an externally coupled matrix.

Rationally weighted Hurwitz numbers, Meijer $G$-functions and matrix integrals

The quantum spectral curve equation associated to KP $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type serving as generating functions for rationally weighted Hurwitz numbers is solved by generalized hypergeometric series. The basis elements spanning the corresponding Sato Grassmannian element are shown to be Meijer $G$-functions, or their asymptotic series. Using their Mellin integral representation the $τ$-function, evaluated at the trace invariants of an externally coupled matrix, is expressed as a matrix integral.

Weighted Hurwitz numbers and topological recursion

The KP and 2D Toda tau-functions of hypergeometric type that serve as generating functions for weighted single and double Hurwitz numbers are related to the topological recursion programme. A graphical representation of such weighted Hurwitz numbers is given in terms of weighted constellations. The associated classical and quantum spectral spectral curves are derived, and these are interpreted combinatorially in terms of the graphical model. The pair correlators are given a finite Christoffel-Darboux representation and determinantal expressions are obtained for the multipair correlators. The genus expansion of the multicurrent correlators is shown to provide generating series for weighted Hurwitz numbers of fixed ramification profile lengths. The WKB series for the Baker function is derived and used to deduce the loop equations and the topological recursion relations in the case of polynomial weight functions.

Asymptotics of quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers

This work concerns both the semiclassical and zero temperature asymptotics of quantum weighted double Hurwitz numbers. The partition function for quantum weighted double Hurwitz numbers can be interpreted in terms of the energy distri- bution of a quantum Bose gas with vanishing fugacity. We compute the leading semi- classical term of the partition function for three versions of the quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers, as well as lower order semiclassical corrections. The classical limit $\hbar \ra 0$ is shown to reproduce the simple single and double Hurwitz numbers studied by Pandharipande and Okounkov [20,22]. The KP-Toda $τ$-function that serves as generating function for the quantum Hurwitz numbers is shown to have the $τ$-function of [20,22] as its leading term in the classical limit, and, with suitable scaling, the same holds for the partition function, the weights and expectations of Hurwitz numbers. We also compute the zero temperature limit $T \ra 0$ of the partition function and quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers. The KP or Toda $τ$-function serving as generating function for the quantum Hurwitz numbers are shown to give the one for Belyi curves in the zero temperature limit and, with suitable scaling, the same holds true for the partition function, the weights and the expectations of Hurwitz numbers.

Semiclassical asymptotics of quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers

This work concerns the semiclassical asymptotics of quantum weighted double Hurwitz numbers. We compute the leading term of the partition function for three versions of the quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers, as well as lower order semiclassical corrections. The classical limit $\hbar \to 0$ is shown to reproduce the simple Hurwitz numbers studied by Pandharipande and Okounkov. The KP-Toda $τ$-function serving as generating function for the quantum Hurwitz numbers is shown to converge in the classical limit to the generating function of Pandharipande and Okounkov and, with suitable scaling, so do the partition function, the weights and expectations of Hurwitz numbers.

2D Toda τ-functions as combinatorial generating functions

Two methods of constructing 2D Toda $τ$-functions that are generating functions for certain geometrical invariants of a combinatorial nature are related. The first involves generation of paths in the Cayley graph of the symmetric group $S_n$ by multiplication of the conjugacy class sums $C_λ\in C[S_n]$ in the group algebra by elements of an abelian group of central elements. Extending the characteristic map to the tensor product $C[S_n]\otimes C[S_n]$ leads to double expansions in terms of power sum symmetric functions, in which the coefficients count the number of such paths. Applying the same map to sums over the orthogonal idempotents leads to diagonal double Schur function expansions that are identified as $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type. The second method is the standard construction of $τ$-functions as vacuum state matrix elements of products of vertex operators in a fermionic Fock space with elements of the abelian group of convolution symmetries. A homomorphism between these two group actions is derived and shown to be intertwined by the characteristic map composed with fermionization. Applications include Okounkov's generating function for double Hurwitz numbers, which count branched coverings of the Riemann sphere with nonminimal branching at two points, and various analogous combinatorial counting functions.

Multispecies quantum Hurwitz numbers

The construction of hypergeometric 2D Toda $τ$-functions as generating functions for quantum Hurwitz numbers is extended here to multispecies families. Both the enumerative geometrical significance of these multispecies quantum Hurwitz numbers as weighted enumerations of branched coverings of the Riemann sphere and their combinatorial significance in terms of weighted paths in the Cayley graph of $S_n$ are derived.

Finite Dimensional KP τ-functions I. Finite Grassmannians

We study τ-functions of the KP hierarchy in terms of abelian group actions on finite dimensional Grassmannians, viewed as subquotients of the Hilbert space Grassmannians of Sato, Segal and Wilson. A determinantal formula of Gekhtman and Kasman involving exponentials of finite dimensional matrices is shown to follow naturally from such reductions. All reduced flows of exponential type generated by matrices with arbitrary nondegenerate Jordan forms are derived, both in the Grassmannian setting and within the fermionic operator formalism. A slightly more general determinantal formula involving resolvents of the matrices generating the flow, valid on the big cell of the Grassmannian, is also derived. An explicit expression is deduced for the Plücker coordinates appearing as coefficients in the Schur function expansion of the τ-function.

Schur function expansions of KP tau functions associated to algebraic curves

The Schur function expansion of Sato-Segal-Wilson KP tau-functions is reviewed. The case of tau-functions related to algebraic curves of arbitrary genus is studied in detail. Explicit expressions for the Plücker coordinate coefficients appearing in the expansion are obtained in terms of directional derivatives of the Riemann theta function or Klein sigma function along the KP flow directions. Using the fundamental bi-differential, it is shown how the coefficients can be expressed as polynomials in terms of Klein's higher genus generalizations of Weierstrass' zeta and P functions. The cases of genus two hyperelliptic and genus three trigonal curves are detailed as illustrations of the approach developed here.

Superharmonic Perturbations of a Gaussian Measure, Equilibrium Measures and Orthogonal Polynomials

This work concerns superharmonic perturbations of a Gaussian measure given by a special class of positive weights in the complex plane of the form $w(z) = \exp(-|z|^2 + U^μ(z))$, where $U^μ(z)$ is the logarithmic potential of a compactly supported positive measure $μ$. The equilibrium measure of the corresponding weighted energy problem is shown to be supported on subharmonic generalized quadrature domains for a large class of perturbing potentials $U^μ(z)$. It is also shown that the $2\times 2$ matrix d-bar problem for orthogonal polynomials with respect to such weights is well-defined and has a unique solution given explicitly by Cauchy transforms. Numerical evidence is presented supporting a conjectured relation between the asymptotic distribution of the zeroes of the orthogonal polynomials in a semi-classical scaling limit and the Schwarz function of the curve bounding the support of the equilibrium measure, extending the previously studied case of harmonic polynomial perturbations with weights $w(z)$ supported on a compact domain.

Constrained Reductions of 2D dispersionless Toda Hierarchy, Hamiltonian Structure and Interface Dynamics

Finite-dimensional reductions of the 2D dispersionless Toda hierarchy, constrained by the ``string equation'' are studied. These include solutions determined by polynomial, rational or logarithmic functions, which are of interest in relation to the ``Laplacian growth'' problem governing interface dynamics. The consistency of such reductions is proved, and the Hamiltonian structure of the reduced dynamics is derived. The Poisson structure of the rationally reduced dispersionless Toda hierarchies is also derived

Hyperspherical Harmonics, Separation of Variables and the Bethe Ansatz

The relation between solutions to Helmholtz's equation on the sphere $S^{n-1}$ and the $[{\gr sl}(2)]^n$ Gaudin spin chain is clarified. The joint eigenfuctions of the Laplacian and a complete set of commuting second order operators suggested by the $R$--matrix approach to integrable systems, based on the loop algebra $\wt{sl}(2)_R$, are found in terms of homogeneous polynomials in the ambient space. The relation of this method of determining a basis of harmonic functions on $S^{n-1}$ to the Bethe ansatz approach to integrable systems is explained.

Dual Isomonodromic Deformations and Moment Maps to Loop Algebras

The Hamiltonian structure of the monodromy preserving deformation equations of Jimbo {\it et al } is explained in terms of parameter dependent pairs of moment maps from a symplectic vector space to the dual spaces of two different loop algebras. The nonautonomous Hamiltonian systems generating the deformations are obtained by pulling back spectral invariants on Poisson subspaces consisting of elements that are rational in the loop parameter and identifying the deformation parameters with those determining the moment maps. This construction is shown to lead to ``dual'' pairs of matrix differential operators whose monodromy is preserved under the same family of deformations. As illustrative examples, involving discrete and continuous reductions, a higher rank generalization of the Hamiltonian equations governing the correlation functions for an impenetrable Bose gas is obtained, as well as dual pairs of isomonodromy representations for the equations of the Painleve transcendents $P_{V}$ and $P_{VI}$.
