Weak corrections for top-quark pair production at hadron colliders are revisited. Predictions for collider energies of 8 TeV, adopted to the recent LHC run, and for 13 as well as 14 TeV, presumably relevant for the next round of LHC experiments, are presented. Kinematic regions with large momentum transfer are identified, where the corrections become large and may lead to strong distortions of differential distributions, thus mimicking anomalous top quark couplings. As a complementary case we investigate the threshold region, corresponding to configurations with small relative velocity between top and antitop quark, which is particularly sensitive to the top-quark Yukawa coupling. We demonstrate, that nontrivial upper limits on this coupling, complementary to those recently derived by the CMS and the ATLAS collaorations, are well within reach of ongoing experiments. In addition we suggest a prescription that allows the implementation of these corrections in current Monte Carlo generators. Furthermore, the weak corrections have been included in the publicly available Hathor library. The numerical results presented in this article use the same setup as the recently calculated NNLO QCD corrections. The results can thus be combined to give the most precise theoretical predictions.
We present the results of the first complete analytic calculation of the quark mass and field anomalous dimensions to ${\cal O}(α_s^5)$ in QCD.
We report first results of an ongoing project devoted to the analytical calculation of the QCD $β$-function and the quark mass anomalous dimension at the five loop level.
The mini-proceedings of the Workshop on "Constraining the hadronic contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment" which included the "13th meeting of the Radio MonteCarLow WG" and the "Satellite meeting R-Measurements at BES-III" held in Trento from April 10th to 12th, 2013, are presented. This collaboration meeting aims to bring together the experimental e+e- collider communities from BaBar, Belle, BESIII, CMD2, KLOE, and SND, with theorists working in the fields of meson transitions form factors, hadronic contributions to (g-2)_μand effective fine structure constant, and development of Monte Carlo generator and Radiative Corrections for precision e+e- and tau physics.
The analytic result for the singlet part of the Adler function of the vector current in a general gauge theory is presented in five-loop approximation. Comparing this result with the corresponding singlet part of the Gross-Llewellyn Smith sum rule [1], we successfully demonstrate the validity of the generalized Crewther relation for the singlet part. This provides a non-trivial test of both our calculations and the generalized Crewther relation. Combining the result with the already available non-singlet part of the Adler function [2,3] we arrive at the complete ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$ expression for the Adler function and, as a direct consequence, at the complete ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$ correction to the $e^+ e^-$ annihilation into hadrons in a general gauge theory.
Corrections of order $α_s^4$ for the axial singlet contributions for the decay rates of the $Z$-boson into hadrons are evaluated in the limit of the heavy top quark mass. Combined with recently finished ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$ calculations of the non-signlet corrections, the new results directly lead us to the first {\em complete} ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$ prediction for the total hadronic decay rate of the Z-boson. The new ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$ term in Z-decay rate lead to a significant stabilization of the perturbative series, to a reduction of the theory uncertainty in the strong coupling constant $α_s$, as extracted from these measurements, and to a small shift of the central value.
We report on our calculation of the order α_s^4 axial singlet contributions for the decay rates of the Z-boson as well as the vector singlet contribution to the cross section for electron-positron annihilation into hadrons. Together with recently finished O(α_s^4) calculations of the non-signlet corrections [1,2], the new results directly lead us to the first complete O(α_s^4) predictions for the total hadronic decay rate of the Z-boson and the ratio R(s).
We present a concise summary of recent results for the vector correlator in massless QCD at order ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$, with all colour factors being given for a generic colour group. As a direct consequence we arrive at: (i) the full QCD contribution to the QED $β$--function of order $α^2\, α_s^4$ in the MSbar- and MOM-schemes; (ii) the full five-loop result of order $α^6$ for the $β$-function of QED with a generic number of single-charged fermions, again for the MSbar- and MOM-schemes.
We compute, for the first time, the order alpha_s^4 contributions to the Bjorken sum rule for polarized electron-nucleon scattering and to the (non-singlet) Adler function for the case of a generic colour gauge group. We confirm at the same order a (generalized) Crewther relation which provides a strong test of the correctness of our previously obtained results: the QCD Adler function and the five-loop beta-function in quenched QED. In particular, the appearance of an irrational contribution proportional to zeta_3 in the latter quantity is confirmed. We obtain the commensurate scale equation relating the effective strong coupling constants as inferred from the Bjorken sum rule and from the Adler function at order alpha_s^4.
The current status of the Adler function and two closely related Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) sum rules, namely, the Bjorken sum rule for polarized DIS and the Gross-Llewellyn Smith sum rule are briefly reviewed. A new result is presented: an analytical calculation of the coefficient function of the latter sum rule in a generic gauge theory in order O(alpha_s^4). It is demonstrated that the corresponding Crewther relation allows to fix two of three colour structures in the O(alpha_s^4) contribution to the singlet part of the Adler function.
Recent theoretical and experimental improvements in the determination of charm and bottom quark masses are discussed. A new and improved evaluation of the contribution from the gluon condensate $< \frac{α_s}π G^2>$ to the charm mass determination and a detailed study of potential uncertainties in the continuum cross section for $b\bar b$ production is presented, together with a study of the parametric uncertainty from the $α_s$-dependence of our results. The final results, $m_c(3 \text{GeV})=986(13) $MeV and $m_b(m_b)=4163(16) $MeV, represent, together with a closely related lattice determination $m_c(3\;{\rm GeV})=986(6) $MeV, the presently most precise determinations of these two fundamental Standard Model parameters. A critical analysis of the theoretical and experimental uncertainties is presented.
We report on some technical aspects of our calculation of alpha_s^4 corrections to R(s) and the semi-leptonic tau decay width [1-3]. We discuss the inner structure of the result as well as the issue of its correctness. We demonstrate recently appeared independent evidence positively testing one of two components of the full result.
In this paper we compare recent experimental data for the total cross section $σ(e^+e^-\to{hadrons})$ with the up-to-date theoretical prediction of perturbative QCD for those energies where perturbation theory is reliable. The excellent agreement suggests the determination of the strong coupling $α_s$ from the measurements in the continuum. The precise data from the charm threshold region, when combined with the recent evaluation of moments with three loop accurracy, lead to a direct determination of the short distance $\bar{\rm MS}$ charm quark mass. Our result for the strong coupling constant $α_s^{(4)}(5 {GeV})=0.235^{+0.047}_{-0.047}$ corresponds to $α_s^{(5)}(M_Z)=0.124^{+0.011}_{-0.014}$, for the charmed quark mass we find $m_c(m_c)=1.304(27)$. Applying the same approach to the bottom quark we obtain $m_b(m_b)=4.191(51)$ GeV. Whereas our result for $α_s(M_Z)$ serves as a useful cross check for other more precise determinations, our values for the charm and bottom quark masses are more accurate than other recent analyses.
We analyze sum rules for the $Υ$ system with resummation of threshold effects on the basis of the nonrelativistic Coulomb approximation. We find for the pole mass of the bottom quark $m_b=4.75\pm 0.04 GeV$ and for the strong coupling constant $\al_s(M_Z)=0.118\pm 0.006$. The origin of the contradiction between two recent estimates obtained within the same formal framework is clarified.
In this paper the three-loop polarization functions Π(q^2) are calculated for the cases of an external vector, axial-vector, scalar or pseudo-scalar current. Results are presented for the imaginary part which directly leads to the cross section $σ(e^+e^- \to Z \to hadrons)$ and to the Higgs decay rates, respectively.
Recent analytical and numerical results for the three-loop polarization function allow to present a phenomenological analysis of the cross section for massive quark production in electron positron annihilation to order $α_s^2$. Numerical predictions based on fixed order perturbation theory are presented for charm and bottom production above 5 and 11.5 GeV, respectively. The contribution from these energy regions to $α(M_Z^2)$, the running QED coupling constant at scale M_Z, are given. The dominant terms close to threshold, i.e. in an expansion for small quark velocity $β$, are presented.
We present analytical calculation of the first seven moments of the heavy quark vacuum polarization function in the three-loop order. The obtained results are compared against the asymptotic formulas following from the threshold singularities. We also discuss the $μ$ dependence of the moments within the BLM procedure.
A systematic theoretical evaluation of the cross section for hadron production in electron-positron collisions in the energy range just below the $B$ meson threshold is presented which includes charm and bottom mass effects and is accurate to order $\as^3$. The corresponding measurement in the energy region several $GeV$ above the threshold is also discussed.
The rate for the final state radiation of hadrons in leptonic $Z$ decays is evaluated, using as input experimental data for $σ(e^+e^-\to hadrons)$ in the low energy region. Configurations with a lepton pair of large and a hadronic state of low invariant mass are dominant. A relative rate $Γ_{l\bar l had}/Γ_{l\bar l}=6.3\times 10^{-4}$ is calculated. This result is about twice the prediction based on a parton model calculation with a quark mass of $300$ MeV. The rate for secondary production of heavy quarks is calculated in the same formalism.
The influence of nonvanishing quark masses on the total cross section in electron positron collisions and on the $Z$ decay rate is calculated. The corrections are expanded in $m^2/s$ and $\as$. Methods similar to those applied for the quadratic mass terms allow to derive the corrections of order $\as m^4/s^2$ and $\as^2m^4/s^2$. Coefficients which depend logarithmically on $m^2/s$ and which cannot be absorbed in a running quark mass arise in order $\as^2$. The implications of these results on electron positron annihilation cross sections at LEP and at lower energies in particular between the charm and the bottom threshold and for energies several GeV above the $b\bar b$ threshold are discussed.
The rate for the production of massive fermions radiated off a pair of massless fermions is calculated analytically. Combined with the analytic calculation of the corresponding virtual contribution one obtains the order $α^2$ correction to the cross section which is induced by the real and virtual radiation of a pair of massive fermions by massless fermions. Approximations valid for large and for small masses are derived and shown to agree with earlier calculations.
Distributions of charged leptons in semileptonic $Λ_c$ and $Λ_b$ decays can be used as spin analysers for the corresponding charm and bottom quarks. QCD corrections to the energy spectra of charged leptons have been given in the literature as well as the corrections to the angular dependence for polarised up-type quarks. The analogous formulae are derived also for polarised down-type quarks. These results are applied to the decays of polarised charm and bottom quarks. The corrections to the asymmetries are found to be small for charm decays. For bottom decays they exhibit a non-trivial dependence on the energy of the charged lepton.
A critical assessment of the available calculations of the top quark width is presented. QCD corrections, the finite mass of the $b$ quark and the effect of the $W$ width are included as well as the electroweak corrections. The relative importance of these corrections is demonstrated for the realistic range of top masses. For the QCD corrected decay rate we use the formulae from \cite{JK1} and include the electroweak correction taken from \cite{DS}. Our results differ from those available in the literature because all the later calculations ignored the effect of W width discussed earlier in \cite{JK1}~. This leads to an effect comparable in size to the electroweak correction.
