Noise Sensitivities for an Atom Shuttled by a Moving Optical Lattice via Shortcuts to Adiabaticity

We find the noise sensitivities (i.e., the quadratic terms of the energy with respect to the perturbation of the noise) of a particle shuttled by an optical lattice that moves according to a shortcut-to-adiabaticity transport protocol. Noises affecting different optical lattice parameters, trap depth, position, and lattice periodicity, are considered. We find generic expressions of the sensitivities for arbitrary noise spectra but focus on the white-noise limit as a basic reference, and on Ornstein-Uhlenbeck noise to account for the effect of non-zero correlation times.

Vanishing efficiency of speeded-up quantum Otto engines

We assess the energy cost of shortcuts to adiabatic expansions or compressions of a harmonic oscillator, the power strokes of a quantum Otto engine. Difficulties to identify the cost stem from the interplay between different parts of the total system (the primary system -the particle-, and the control system) and definitions of work (exclusive and inclusive). While attention is usually paid to the inclusive work of the primary system, we identify the energy cost as the exclusive work of the total system, which, for a clearcut scale disparity between primary and control systems, coincides with the exclusive work for the control system. This energy cost makes the efficiency of the engine zero. For an ion in a Paul trap, the Paul trap fixes the gauge for the primary system, resulting in a counterintuitive evolution of its inclusive power and internal energy. Conditions for which inclusive power of the primary system and exclusive power control system are proportional are found.

Inverse Engineering Control in Open Quantum Systems

We propose a scheme for inverse engineering control in open quantum systems. Starting from an undetermined time evolution operator, a time-dependent Hamiltonian is derived in order to guide the system to attain an arbitrary target state at a predefined time. We analyze the fidelity of our control protocol under noise with respect to the stochastic fluctuation of the linear parameters of the Hamiltonian during the time evolution. For a special family of Hamiltonians for two-level systems, we show that the control evolution of the system under noise can be categorized into two standard decohering processes: dephasing and depolarization, for both Markovian and non- Markovian conditions. In particular, we illustrate our formalism by analysing the robustness of the engineered target state.
