Finite size dependence of scaling functions of the three-dimensional O(4) model in an external field

We calculate universal finite size scaling functions for the order parameter and the longitudinal susceptibility of the three-dimensional O(4) model. The phase transition of this model is supposed to be in the same universality class as the chiral transition of two-flavor QCD. The scaling functions serve as a testing device for QCD simulations on small lattices, where, for example, pseudocritical temperatures are difficult to determine. In addition, we have improved the infinite volume limit parametrization of the scaling functions by using newly generated high statistics data for the 3d O(4) model in the high temperature region on an L=120 lattice.

Infrastructure for Detector Research and Development towards the International Linear Collider

The EUDET-project was launched to create an infrastructure for developing and testing new and advanced detector technologies to be used at a future linear collider. The aim was to make possible experimentation and analysis of data for institutes, which otherwise could not be realized due to lack of resources. The infrastructure comprised an analysis and software network, and instrumentation infrastructures for tracking detectors as well as for calorimetry.

Longitudinal and transverse spectral functions in the three-dimensional O(4) model

We have performed a high statistics simulation of the O(4) model on a three-dimensional lattice of linear extension L=120 for small external fields H. Using the maximum entropy method we analyze the longitudinal and transverse plane spin correlation functions for T<T_c and T>=T_c. In the transverse case we find for all T and H a single sharp peak in the spectral function, whose position defines the transverse mass m_T, the correlator is that of a free particle with mass m_T. In the longitudinal case we find in the very high temperature region also a single sharp peak in the spectrum. On approaching the critical point from above the peak broadens somewhat and at T_c its position m_L is at 2m_T for all our H-values. Below T_c we find still a significant peak at omega=2m_T and at higher omega-values a continuum of states with several smaller peaks with decreasing heights. This finding is in accord with a relation of Patashinskii and Pokrovskii between the longitudinal and the transverse correlation functions. We test this relation in the following. As a by-product we calculate critical exponents and amplitudes and confirm our former results.

Correlation lengths and scaling functions in the three-dimensional O(4) model

We investigate numerically the transverse and longitudinal correlation lengths of the three-dimensional O(4) model as a function of the external field H. From our data we calculate the scaling function of the transverse correlation length, and that of the longitudinal correlation length for T>T_c. We show that the scaling functions do not only describe the critical behaviours of the correlation lengths but encompass as well the predicted Goldstone effects, in particular the H^{-1/2}-dependence of the transverse correlation length for T<T_c. In addition, we determine the critical exponent delta=4.824(9) and several critical amplitudes from which we derive the universal amplitude ratios R_{chi}=1.084(18), Q_c=0.431(9), Q_2^T=4.91(8), Q_2^L=1.265(24) and U_{xi}^c=1.99(1). The last result supports a relation between the longitudinal and transverse correlation functions, which was conjectured to hold below T_c but seems to be valid also at T_c.

Numerical equation of state and other scaling functions from an improved three-dimensional Ising model

We study an improved three-dimensional Ising model with external magnetic field near the critical point by Monte Carlo simulations. From our data we determine numerically the universal scaling functions of the magnetization, that is the equation of state, of the susceptibility and of the correlation length. In order to normalize the scaling functions we calculate the critical amplitudes of the three observables on the critical line, the phase boundary and the critical isochore. These amplitudes lead to the universal ratios C^+/C^-=4.756(28), R_{chi}=1.723(13), Q_c=0.326(3) and Q_2=1.201(10). We find excellent agreement of the data with the parametric representation of the asymptotic equation of state as found by field theory methods. The comparison of the susceptibility data to the corresponding scaling function shows a marginal difference in the symmetric phase, which can be explained by the slightly different value for R_{chi} used in the parametrization. The shape of the correlation-length-scaling function is similar to the one of the susceptibility, as expected from earlier parametrizations. The peak positions of the two scaling functions are coinciding within the error bars.

Comparison of finite-size-scaling functions for 3d O(N) spin models to QCD

We calculate numerically universal finite-size-scaling functions of the magnetization for the three-dimensional O(4) and O(2) spin models. The approach of these functions to the infinite-volume scaling functions is studied in detail on the critical and pseudocritical lines. For this purpose we determine the pseudocritical line in two different ways. We find that the asymptotic form of the finite-size-scaling functions is already reached at small values of the scaling variable. A comparison with QCD lattice data for two flavours of staggered fermions shows a similar finite-size behaviour which is compatible with that of the spin models.

Specific heat and energy for the three-dimensional O(2) model

We investigate the three-dimensional O(2) model on lattices of size 8^3 to 160^3 close to the critical point at zero magnetic field. We confirm explicitly the value of the critical coupling J_c found by Ballesteros et al. and estimate there the universal values of g_r and xi/L. At the critical point we study the finite size dependencies of the energy density epsilon and the specific heat C. We find that the nonsingular part of the specific heat C_{ns} is linearly dependent on 1/alpha. From the critical behaviour of the specific heat for T not T_c on the largest lattices we determine the universal amplitude ratio A+/A-. The alpha- dependence of this ratio is close to the phenomenological relation A+/A- = 1-4alpha.

Goldstone-mode effects and scaling function for the three-dimensional O(4) model

We investigate numerically the three-dimensional O(4) model on 24^3-120^3 lattices as a function of the magnetic field H. We verify explicitly the singularities induced by Goldstone modes in the low-temperature phase of the model, and show that they are also observed close to the critical temperature. Our results are well described by the perturbative form of the model's magnetic equation of state, with coefficients determined nonperturbatively from our data. The resulting expression is used to generate the magnetization's scaling function parametrically.
