Superfluid vortex multipoles and soliton stripes on a torus

We study the existence, stability, and dynamics of vortex dipole and quadrupole configurations in the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation on the surface of a torus. For this purpose we use, in addition to the full two-dimensional NLS on the torus, a recently derived [Phys. Rev. A 101, 053606 (2021)] reduced point-vortex particle model which is shown to be in excellent agreement with the full NLS evolution. Horizontal, vertical, and diagonal stationary vortex dipoles are identified and continued along the torus aspect ratio and the chemical potential of the solution. Windows of stability for these solutions are identified. We also investigate stationary vortex quadrupole configurations. After eliminating similar solutions induced by invariances and symmetries, we find a total of 16 distinct configurations ranging from horizontal and vertical aligned quadrupoles, to rectangular and rhomboidal quadrupoles, to trapezoidal and irregular quadrupoles. The stability for the least unstable and, potentially, stable quadrapole solutions is monitored both at the NLS and the reduced model levels. Two quadrupole configurations are found to be stable on small windows of the torus aspect ratio and a handful of quadrupoles are found to be very weakly unstable for relatively large parameter windows. Finally, we briefly study the dark soliton stripes and their connection, through a series of bifurcation cascades, with steady state vortex configurations.

Existence, Stability & Dynamics of Nonlinear Modes in a 2d Partially $\mathcal{PT}$ Symmetric Potential

It is known that multidimensional complex potentials obeying $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry may possess all real spectra and continuous families of solitons. Recently it was shown that for multi-dimensional systems these features can persist when the parity symmetry condition is relaxed so that the potential is invariant under reflection in only a single spatial direction. We examine the existence, stability and dynamical properties of localized modes within the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in such a scenario of partially $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric potential.

Multidimensional Discrete Compactons in Nonlinear Schrödinger Lattices with Strong Nonlinearity Management

The existence of multidimensional lattice compactons in the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the presence of fast periodic time modulations of the nonlinearity is demonstrated. By averaging over the period of the fast modulations, a new effective averaged dynamical equation arises with coupling constants involving Bessel functions of the first and zeroth kind. These terms allow one to solve, at this averaged level, for exact discrete compacton solution configurations in the corresponding stationary equation. We focus on seven types of compacton solutions: single site and vortex solutions are found to be always stable in the parametric regimes we examined. Other solutions such as double site in- and out-of-phase, four site symmetric and anti-symmetric, and a five site compacton solution are found to have regions of stability and instability in two-dimensional parametric planes, involving variations of the strength of the coupling and of the nonlinearity. We also explore the time evolution of the solutions and compare the dynamics according to the averaged with those of the original dynamical equations without the averaging. Possible observation of compactons in the BEC loaded in a deep two-dimensional optical lattice with interactions modulated periodically in time is discussed.

Some case example exact solutions for quadratically nonlinear optical media with $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric potentials

In the present paper we consider an optical system with a $χ^{(2)}$-type nonlinearity and unspecified $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric potential functions. Considering this as an inverse problem and positing a family of exact solutions in terms of cnoidal functions, we solve for the resulting potential functions in a way that ensures the potentials obey the requirements of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry. We then focus on case examples of soliton and periodic solutions for which we present a stability analysis as a function of their amplitude parameters. Finally, we numerically explore the nonlinear dynamics of the associated waveforms to identify the outcome of the relevant dynamical instabilities of localized and extended states.

Eigenstates and instabilities of chains with embedded defects

We consider the eigenvalue problem for one-dimensional linear Schrödinger lattices (tight-binding) with an embedded few-sites linear or nonlinear, Hamiltonian or non-conservative defect (an oligomer). Such a problem arises when considering scattering states in the presence of (generally complex) impurities as well as in the stability analysis of nonlinear waves. We describe a general approach based on a matching of solutions of the linear portions of the lattice at the location of the oligomer defect. As specific examples we discuss both linear and nonlinear, Hamiltonian and $\cP \cT$-symmetric dimers and trimers. In the linear case, this approach provides us a handle for semi-analytically computing the spectrum [this amounts to the solution of a polynomial equation]. In the nonlinear case, it enables the computation of the linearization spectrum around the stationary solutions. The calculations showcase the oscillatory instabilities that strongly nonlinear states typically manifest.

Asymmetric Wave Propagation Through Nonlinear PT-symmetric Oligomers

In the present paper, we consider nonlinear PT-symmetric dimers and trimers (more generally, oligomers) embedded within a linear Schr{ö}dinger lattice. We examine the stationary states of such chains in the form of plane waves, and analytically compute their reflection and transmission coefficients through the nonlinear PT symmetric oligomer, as well as the corresponding rectification factors which clearly illustrate the asymmetry between left and right propagation in such systems. We examine not only the existence but also the dynamical stability of the plane wave states and interestingly find them to be generically unstable. Lastly, we generalize our numerical considerations to the more physically relevant case of Gaussian initial wavepackets and confirm that the asymmetry in the transmission properties persists in the case of such wavepackets, as well.
