Multipartite Entanglement in Rabi Driven Superconducting Qubits

Exploring highly connected networks of qubits is invaluable for implementing various quantum algorithms and simulations as it allows for entangling qubits with reduced circuit depth. Here, we demonstrate a multi-qubit STAR (Sideband Tone Assisted Rabi driven) gate. Our scheme is inspired by the ion qubit Mølmer-Sørensen gate and is mediated by a shared photonic mode and Rabi-driven superconducting qubits, which relaxes restrictions on qubit frequencies during fabrication and supports scalability. We achieve a two-qubit gate with maximum state fidelity of 0.95 in 310 ns, a three-qubit gate with state fidelity 0.905 in 217 ns, and a four-qubit gate with state fidelity 0.66 in 200 ns. Furthermore, we develop a model of the gate that show the four-qubit gate is limited by shared resonator losses and the spread of qubit-resonator couplings, which must be addressed to reach high-fidelity operations.

The Detailed Chemical Properties of M31 Star Clusters I. Fe, Alpha and Light Elements

We present ages, [Fe/H] and abundances of the alpha elements Ca I, Si I, Ti I, Ti II, and light elements Mg I, Na I, and Al I for 31 globular clusters in M31, which were obtained from high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR$>60$) echelle spectra of their integrated light. All abundances and ages are obtained using our original technique for high resolution integrated light abundance analysis of globular clusters. This sample provides a never before seen picture of the chemical history of M31. The globular clusters are dispersed throughout the inner and outer halo, from 2.5 kpc $<$ R$_{\rm M31}$ $<$ 117 kpc. We find a range of [Fe/H] within 20 kpc of the center of M31, and a constant [Fe/H]$\sim-1.6$ for the outer halo clusters. We find evidence for at least one massive globular cluster in M31 with an age between 1 and 5 Gyr. The alpha-element ratios are generally similar to Milky Way globular cluster and field star ratios. We also find chemical evidence for a late-time accretion origin for at least one cluster, which has a different abundance pattern than other clusters at similar metallicity. We find evidence for star-to-star abundance variations in Mg, Na, and Al in the globular clusters in our sample, and find correlations of Ca, Mg, Na, and possibly Al abundance ratios with cluster luminosity and velocity dispersion, which can potentially be used to constrain globular cluster self-enrichment scenarios. Data presented here were obtained with the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the Keck I Telescope.

Chemical evolution of the Galactic bulge as traced by microlensed dwarf and subgiant stars. Detailed abundance analysis of OGLE-2008-BLG-209S

AIMS. Our aims are twofold. First we aim to evaluate the robustness and accuracy of stellar parameters and detailed elemental abundances that can be derived from high-resolution spectroscopic observations of microlensed dwarf and subgiant stars. We then aim to use microlensed dwarf and subgiant stars to investigate the abundance structure and chemical evolution of the Milky Way Bulge. [ABRIDGED] METHODS. We present a detailed elemental abundance analysis of OGLE-2008-BLG-209S, the source star of a new microlensing event towards the Bulge, for which we obtained a high-resolution spectrum with the MIKE spectrograph on the Magellan Clay telescope. We have performed four different analyses of OGLE-2008-BLG-209S. [ABRIDGED] We have also re-analysed three previous microlensed dwarf stars OGLE-2006-BLG-265S, MOA-2006-BLG-099S, and OGLE-2007-BLG-349S with the same method. This homogeneous data set, although small, enables a direct comparison between the different stellar populations. RESULTS. We find that OGLE-2008-BLG-209S is a subgiant star that has a metallicity of [Fe/H] ~-0.33. It possesses [alpha/Fe] enhancements similar to what is found for Bulge giant stars at the same metallicity, and what also is found for nearby thick disc stars at the same metallicity. In contrast, the previous three microlensing dwarf stars have very high metallicities, [Fe/H]>+0.4, and more solar-like abundance ratios, i.e. [alpha/Fe]~0. The decrease in the [alpha/Fe] ratio with [Fe/H] is the typical signature of enrichment from low and intermediate mass stars. We furthermore find that the results for the four Bulge stars, in combination with results from studies of giant stars in the Bulge, seem to favour a secular formation scenario for the Bulge.

An instability criterion for a finite amplitude localized disturbance in a shear flow of electrically conducting fluids

The stability of shear flows of electrically conducting fluids, with respect to finite amplitude three-dimensional localized disturbances is considered. The time evolution of the fluid impulse integral, characterizing such disturbances, for the case of low magnetic Reynolds number is obtained by integrating analytically the vorticity equation. Analysis of the resulted equation reveals a new instability criterion.
