Random Matrices and complexity of Spin Glasses

We give an asymptotic evaluation of the complexity of spherical p-spin spin-glass models via random matrix theory. This study enables us to obtain detailed information about the bottom of the energy landscape, including the absolute minimum (the ground state), the other local minima, and describe an interesting layered structure of the low critical values for the Hamiltonians of these models. We also show that our approach allows us to compute the related TAP-complexity and extend the results known in the physics literature. As an independent tool, we prove a LDP for the k-th largest eigenvalue of the GOE, extending the results of Ben Arous, Dembo and Guionnett (2001).

Measurement of spin-dependent total cross-section difference ΔσTΔσ_T in neutron-proton scattering at 16 MeV

A new measurement of ΔσTΔσ_T for polarized neutrons transmitted through a polarized proton target at 16.2 MeV has been made. A polarized neutron beam was obtained from the 3H(d,n⃗)4He^{3}\rm{H}(d,\vec n)^{4}\rm{He} reaction; proton polarization over 90\% was achieved in a frozen spin target of 20 cm3^3 volume. The measurement yielded the value ΔσT=(−126±21±14)Δσ_T=(-126\pm21\pm14) mb. The result of a simple phase shift analysis for the 3S1−3D1^3S_1-^3D_1 mixing parameter ε1ε_1 is presented and compared with the theoretical potential model predictions.
