Atomic-scale mechanisms for magnetostriction in CoFe$_2$O$_4$ and La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_3$ oxides determined by differential x-ray absorption spectroscopy

The atomic environments involved in the magnetostriction effect in CoFe$_2$O$_4$ and La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_3$ polycrystalline samples have been identified by differential extended x-ray absorption fine structure (DiffEXAFS) spectroscopy. We demonstrate that cobalt atoms at octahedral sites are responsible for their magnetostriction. The analysis of DiffEXAFS data indicates that the local-site magnetostrictive strains of Co atoms are reversed in these two oxides, in agreement with the macroscopic magnetostriction. For the CoFe$_2$O$_4$ spinel, a large negative strain along the (100) direction has been determined for the CoO$_6$ octahedron causing a tetragonal contraction in contrast with the La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_3$ perovskite, where a positive moderate strain along the (100) direction was found resulting in a tetragonal expansion. The different local-site magnetostriction is understood in terms of the different valence and spin state of the Co atoms for the two oxides. The macroscopicmagnetostriction would be explained then by the relative change in volume, either contraction in CoFe$_2$O$_4$ or expansion in La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_3$, when the tetragonal axis of the Co site is reoriented under an externally applied magnetic field.

Structural, magnetic and electronic properties of CaBaCo4-xMxO7 (M= Fe, Zn)

The effect of substituting iron and zinc for cobalt in CaBaCo$_4$O$_7$ has been investigated using neutron diffraction and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The orthorhombic distortion present in the parent compound CaBaCo$_4$O$_7$ decreases with increasing the content of either Fe or Zn. The samples CaBaCo$_3$ZnO$_7$ and CaBaCo$_{4-x}$Fe$_x$O$_7$ with $x \leq 1.5$ are metrically hexagonal but much better refinements in the neutron diffraction patterns are obtained using an orthorhombic unit cell. The two types of substitution have opposite effects on the structural and magnetic properties. Fe atoms preferentially occupy the sites at the triangular layer. Thus, the replacement of Co by Fe supresses the ferrimagnetic ordering and CaBaCo$_{4-x}$Fe$_x$O$_7$ samples are antiferromagnetically ordered with a new propagation vector k=(1/3,0,0). However, the Zn atoms prefer occupying the Kagome layer, which is very detrimental for the long range magnetic interactions giving rise to a magnetic glass. The oxidation state of iron and zinc is found to be 3+ and 2+, respectively, independently of the content. Therefore, the average Co oxidation state changes accordingly with the Fe$^{3+}$ or Zn$^{2+}$ doping. Also, x-ray absorption spectroscopy data confirms the different preferential occupation for both Fe and Zn cations. The combined information obtained by neutron diffraction and x-ray absorption spectroscopy indicates that cobalt atoms can be either in a fluctuating Co$^{2+}$/Co$^{3+}$ valence state or, alternatively, Co$^{2+}$ and Co$^{3+}$ ions being randomly distributed in the lattice. These results explain the occurrence of local disorder in the CoO$_4$ tetrahedra obtained by EXAFS. An anomaly in the lattice parameters and an increase in the local disorder is observed only at the ferrimagnetic transition for CaBaCo$_4$O$_7$ revealing the occurrence of local magneto-elastic coupling.

X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy study of Mn and Co valence and spin states in TbMn$_{\rm 1-x}$Co$_{\rm x}$O$_3$

The valence and spin state evolution of Mn and Co on TbMn$_{\rm 1-x}$Co$_{\rm x}$O$_3$ series is precisely determined by means of soft and hard x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and K$β$ x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES). Our results show the change from Mn$^{3+}$ to Mn$^{4+}$ both high-spin (HS) together with the evolution from Co$^{2+}$ HS to Co$^{3+}$ low-spin (LS) with increasing $\rm x$. In addition, high energy resolution XAS spectra on the K pre-edge region are interpreted in terms of the strong charge transfer and hybridization effects along the series. These results correlate well with the spin values of Mn and Co atoms obtained from the K$β$ XES data. From this study, we determine that Co enters into the transition metal sublattice of TbMnO$_3$ as a divalent ion in HS state, destabilizing the Mn long range magnetic order since very low doping compositions (${\rm x} \le 0.1$). Samples in the intermediate composition range ($0.4 \le {\rm x} \le 0.6$) adopt the crystal structure of a double perovskite with long range ferromagnetic ordering which is due to Mn$^{4+}$-O-Co$^{2+}$ superexchange interactions with both cations in HS configuration. Ferromagnetism vanishes for ${\rm x} \ge 0.7$ due to the structural disorder that collapses the double perovskite structure. The spectroscopic techniques reveal the occurrence of Mn$^{4+}$ HS and a fluctuating valence state Co$^{2+}$ HS/Co$^{3+}$ LS in this composition range. Disorder and competitive interactions lead to a magnetic glassy behaviour in these samples.

The Spanish Square Kilometre Array White Book

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is called to revolutionise essentially all areas of Astrophysics. With a collecting area of about a square kilometre, the SKA will be a transformational instrument, and its scientific potential will go beyond the interests of astronomers. Its technological challenges and huge cost requires a multinational effort, and Europe has recognised this by putting the SKA on the roadmap of the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI). The Spanish SKA White Book is the result of the coordinated effort of 120 astronomers from 40 different research centers. The book shows the enormous scientific interest of the Spanish astronomical community in the SKA and warrants an optimum scientific exploitation of the SKA by Spanish researchers, if Spain enters the SKA project.

Structural changes at the semiconductor-insulator phase transition in the single layered La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 perovskite

The semiconductor-insulator phase transition of the single-layer manganite La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 has been studied by means of high resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction and resonant x-ray scattering at the Mn K edge. We conclude that a concomitant structural transition from tetragonal I4/mmm to orthorhombic Cmcm phases drives this electronic transition. A detailed symmetry-mode analysis reveals that condensation of three soft modes -Delta_2(B2u), X1+(B2u) and X1+(A)- acting on the oxygen atoms accounts for the structural transformation. The Delta_2 mode leads to a pseudo Jahn-Teller distortion (in the orthorhombic bc-plane only) on one Mn site (Mn1) whereas the two X1+ modes produce an overall contraction of the other Mn site (Mn2) and expansion of the Mn1 one. The X1+ modes are responsible for the tetragonal superlattice (1/2,1/2,0)-type reflections in agreement with a checkerboard ordering of two different Mn sites. A strong enhancement of the scattered intensity has been observed for these superlattice reflections close to the Mn K edge, which could be ascribed to some degree of charge disproportion between the two Mn sites of about 0.15 electrons. We also found that the local geometrical anisotropy of the Mn1 atoms and its ordering originated by the condensed Delta_2 mode alone perfectly explains the resonant scattering of forbidden (1/4,1/4,0)-type reflections without invoking any orbital ordering.

Valence change of praseodymium in Pr0.5Ca0.5CoO3 investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy

X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements in Pr0.5Ca0.5CoO3 were performed at the Pr M4,5, Pr L3, and Ca L2,3 absorption edges as a function of temperature below 300 K. Ca spectra show no changes down to 10 K while a noticeable thermally dependent evolution takes place at the Pr edges across the metal-insulator transition. Spectral changes are analyzed by different methods, including multiple scattering simulations, which provide quantitative details on an electron loss at Pr 4f orbitals. We conclude that in the insulating phase a fraction [15(+5)%] of Pr3+ undergoes a further oxidation to adopt a hybridized configuration composed of an admixture of atomic-like 4f1 states (Pr4+) and f- symmetry states on the O 2p valence band (Pr3+L states) indicative of a strong 4f- 2p interaction.
