Generalized binomial state: Nonclassical features observed through various witnesses and a measure of nonclassicality

Experimental realization of various quantum states of interest has become possible in the recent past due to the rapid developments in the field of quantum state engineering. Nonclassical properties of such states have led to various exciting applications, specifically in the area of quantum information processing. The present article aims to study lower- and higher-order nonclassical features of such an engineered quantum state (a generalized binomial state based on Abel's formula). Present study has revealed that the state studied here is highly nonclassical. Specifically, higher-order nonclassical properties of this state are reported using a set of witnesses, like higher-order antibunching, higher-order sub-Poissonian photon statistics, higher-order squeezing (both Hong Mandel type and Hillery type). A set of other witnesses for lower- and higher-order nonclassicality (e.g., Vogel's criterion and Agarwal's A parameter) have also been explored. Further, an analytic expression for the Wigner function of the generalized binomial state is reported and the same is used to witness nonclassicality and to quantify the amount of nonclassicality present in the system by computing the nonclassical volume (volume of the negative part of the Wigner function). Optical tomogram of the generalized binomial state is also computed for various conditions as Wigner function cannot be measured directly in an experiment in general, but the same can be obtained from the optical tomogram with the help of Radon transform.

Comparison of lower order and higher order nonclassicality in photon added and photon subtracted squeezed coherent states

Nonclassical properties of photon added and photon subtracted squeezed coherent states have been compared with specific focus on the higher order nonclassicalities, such as higher order squeezing, higher order sub-Poissonian photon statistics, higher order antibunching. It is observed that both photon added and photon subtracted squeezed coherent states are highly nonclassical as they satisfy criteria for all of the above mentioned nonclassicalities and a set of other criteria including negativity of Wigner function, Klyshko's criterion and Agarwal's $(A_{3})$ parameter. Further, the amount of nonclassicality present in these two types of states has been compared quantitatively using a measure of nonclassicality known as nonclassical volume. Variation in the amount of nonclassicality with the number of photon(s) added/subtracted is also investigated, and it is found that the addition of photons makes the squeezed coherent state more nonclassical than what is done by the subtraction of photons.

Hollow Gaussian beam generation through nonlinear interaction of photons with orbital-angular-momemtum

Hollow Gaussian beams (HGB) are a special class of doughnut shaped beams that do not carry orbital angular momentum (OAM). Such beams have a wide range of applications in many fields including atomic optics, bio-photonics, atmospheric science, and plasma physics. Till date, these beams have been generated using linear optical elements. Here, we show a new way of generating HGBs by three-wave mixing in a nonlinear crystal. Based on nonlinear interaction of photons having OAM and conservation of OAM in nonlinear processes, we experimentally generated ultrafast HGBs of order as high as 6 and power >180 mW at 355 nm. This generic concept can be extended to any wavelength, timescales (continuous-wave and ultrafast) and any orders. We show that the removal of azimuthal phase of vortices does not produce Gaussian beam. We also propose a new and only method to characterize the order of the HGBs.

Divergence of optical vortex beams

We show, both theoretically and experimentally, that the propagation of optical vortices in free space can be analysed by using the width ($w(z)$) of the host Gaussian beam and the inner and outer radii of the vortex beam at the source plane ($z=0$) as defined in \textit{Optics Letters \textbf{39,} 4364-4367 (2014)}. We also studied the divergence of vortex beams, considered as the rate of change of inner or outer radius with the propagation distance, and found that it varies with the order in the same way as that of the inner and outer radii at zero propagation distance. These results may be useful in designing optical fibers for orbital angular momentum modes that play a crucial role in quantum communication.

Higher order optical vortices and formation of speckles

We have experimentally generated higher order optical vortices and scattered them through a ground glass plate that results in speckle formation. Intensity autocorrelation measurements of speckles show that their size decreases with increase in the order of the vortex. It implies increase in angular diameter of the vortices with their order. The characterization of vortices in terms of their annular bright ring also helps us to understand these observations. The results may find applications in stellar intensity interferometry and thermal ghost imaging.

On Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition and universal breathing mode in two dimensional photon gas

A system of two dimensional photon gas has recently been realized experimentally. It is pointed out that this setup can be used to observe a universal breathing mode of photon gas. It is shown that a modification in the experimental setup would open up a possibility of observing the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition in such a system. It is shown that the universal jump in the superfluid density of light in the output channel can be used as an unambiguous signature for the experimental verification of the BKT transition.

Propagation of an arbitrary vortex pair through an astigmatic optical system and determination of its net topological charge

We embed a pair of vortices with different topological charges in a Gaussian beam and study its evolution through an astigmatic optical system, a tilted lens. The propagation dynamics is explained by a closed-form analytical expression. Furthermore, we show that a careful examination of the intensity distribution at a predicted position past the lens can provide us with the net charge present in the beam. To the best of our knowledge, our method is the first non-interferometric technique to measure the net charge of an arbitrary vortex pair. Our theoretical results are well supported by experimental observations.

Wigner distribution, nonclassicality and decoherence of generalized and reciprocal binomial states

There are quantum states of light that can be expressed as finite superpositions of Fock states (FSFS). We demonstrate the nonclassicality of an arbitrary FSFS by means of its phase space distributions such as the Wigner function and the $Q$-function. The decoherence of the FSFS is studied by considering the time evolution of its Wigner function in amplitude decay and phase damping channels. As examples, we determine the nonclassicality and decoherence of generalized and reciprocal binomial states.
