Similarities and differences between real and complex Banach spaces: an overview and recent developments

There are numerous cases of discrepancies between results obtained in the setting of real Banach spaces and those obtained in the complex context. This article is a modern exposition of the subtle differences between key results and theories for complex and real Banach spaces and the corresponding linear operators between them. We deeply discuss some aspects of the complexification of real Banach spaces and give several examples showing how drastically different can be the behavior of real Banach spaces versus their complex counterparts.

Linear chaos for the Quick-Thinking-Driver model

In recent years, the topic of car-following has experimented an increased importance in traffic engineering and safety research. This has become a very interesting topic because of the development of driverless cars \cite{google_driverless_cars}. Driving models which describe the interaction between adjacent vehicles in the same lane have a big interest in simulation modeling, such as the Quick-Thinking-Driver model. A non-linear version of it can be given using the logistic map, and then chaos appears. We show that an infinite-dimensional version of the linear model presents a chaotic behavior using the same approach as for studying chaos of death models of cell growth.

On the optimality of the hypercontractivity of the complex Bohnenblust--Hille inequality

The main motivation of this paper is the following open problem: Is the hypercontractivity of the \emph{complex} polynomial Bohnenblust--Hille inequality an optimal result? We show that the solution to this problem has a close connection with the searching of the optimal constants for the \emph{real} polynomial Bohnenblust--Hille inequality. So we are lead to a detailed study of the hypercontractivity constants for real scalars. In fact we study two notions of constants of hypercontractivity: absolute (Ha,RH_{a,\mathbb{R}}) and asymptotic (H∞,RH_{\infty,\mathbb{R}}). Among other results, our estimates combined with recent results from \cite{CMPS} show that 1.5098<H∞,R<2.829and1.6561<Ha,R<3.296. 1.5098<H_{\infty,\mathbb{R}}<2.829 \quad \text{and} \quad 1.6561<H_{a,\mathbb{R}}<3.296.

Polynomial inequalities on the π/4π/4-circle sector

A number of sharp inequalities are proved for the space P(2D(π4)){\mathcal P}\left(^2D\left(\fracπ{4}\right)\right) of 2-homogeneous polynomials on R2{\mathbb R}^2 endowed with the supremum norm on the sector D(π4):={eiθ:θ∈[0,π4]}D\left(\fracπ{4}\right):=\left\{e^{iθ}:θ\in \left[0,\fracπ{4}\right]\right\}. Among the main results we can find sharp Bernstein and Markov inequalities and the calculation of the polarization constant and the unconditional constant of the canonical basis of the space P(2D(π4)){\mathcal P}\left(^2D\left(\fracπ{4}\right)\right).

Sharp values for the constants in the polynomial Bohnenblust-Hille inequality

In this paper we prove that the complex polynomial Bohnenblust-Hille constant for 22-homogeneous polynomials in C2{\mathbb C}^2 is exactly 324\sqrt[4]{\frac{3}{2}}. We also give the exact value of the real polynomial Bohnenblust-Hille constant for 22-homogeneous polynomials in R2{\mathbb R}^2. Finally, we provide lower estimates for the real polynomial Bohnenblust-Hille constant for polynomials in R2{\mathbb R}^2 of higher degrees.

A geometric technique to generate lower estimates for the constants in the Bohnenblust--Hille inequalities

The Bohnenblust--Hille (polynomial and multilinear) inequalities were proved in 1931 in order to solve Bohr's absolute convergence problem on Dirichlet series. Since then these inequalities have found applications in various fields of analysis and analytic number theory. The control of the constants involved is crucial for applications, as it became evident in a recent outstanding paper of Defant, Frerick, Ortega-Cerdá, Ouna\"ıes and Seip published in 2011. The present work is devoted to obtain lower estimates for the constants appearing in the Bohnenblust--Hille polynomial inequality and some of its variants. The technique that we introduce for this task is a combination of the Krein--Milman Theorem with a description of the geometry of the unit ball of polynomial spaces on ℓ∞2\ell^2_\infty.

On very non-linear subsets of continuous functions

In this paper we continue the study initiated by Gurariy and Quarta in 2004 on the existence of linear spaces formed, up to the null vector, by continuous functions that attain the maximum only at one point. Inserting a topological flavor to the subject, we prove that results already known for functions defined on certain subsets of R are actually true for functions on quite general topological spaces. In the line of the original results of Gurariy and Quarta, we prove that, depending on the desired dimension, such subspaces may exist or not.

Subspaces of maximal dimension contained in Lp(Ω)−⋃q<pLq(Ω)L_p(Ω) - \bigcup\limits_{q<p} L_q (Ω)

Let (Ω,Σ,μ)(Ω,Σ,μ) be a measure space and 1<p<+∞1< p < +\infty. In this paper we show that, under quite general conditions, the set Lp(Ω)−⋃1≤q<pLq(Ω)L_{p}(Ω) - \bigcup\limits_{1 \leq q < p}L_{q}(Ω) is maximal spaceable, that is, it contains (except for the null vector) a closed subspace FF of Lp(Ω)L_{p}(Ω) such that dim⁡(F)=dim⁡(Lp(Ω))\dim(F) = \dim(L_{p}(Ω)). We also show that if those conditions are not fulfilled, then even the larger set Lp(Ω)−Lq(Ω)L_p(Ω) - L_q(Ω), 1≤q<p1 \leq q < p, may fail to be maximal spaceable. The aim of the results presented here is, among others, to generalize all the previous work (since the 1960's) related to the linear structure of the sets Lp(Ω)−Lq(Ω)L_{p}(Ω) - L_{q}(Ω) with q<pq < p and Lp(Ω)−⋃1≤q<pLq(Ω)L_{p}(Ω) - \bigcup\limits_{1 \leq q < p}L_{q}(Ω).

When is the Haar measure a Pietsch measure for nonlinear mappings?

We show that, as in the linear case, the normalized Haar measure on a compact topological group GG is a Pietsch measure for nonlinear summing mappings on closed translation invariant subspaces of C(G)C(G). This answers a question posed to the authors by J. Diestel. We also show that our result applies to several well-studied classes of nonlinear summing mappings. In the final section some problems are proposed.

Lp[0,1]∖⋃q>pLq[0,1]L_{p}[0,1] \setminus \bigcup\limits_{q>p} L_{q}[0,1] is spaceable for every p>0p>0

In this short note we prove the result stated in the title; that is, for every p>0p>0 there exists an infinite dimensional closed linear subspace of Lp[0,1]L_{p}[0,1] every nonzero element of which does not belong to ⋃q>pLq[0,1]\bigcup\limits_{q>p} L_{q}[0,1]. This answers in the positive a question raised in 2010 by R. M. Aron on the spaceability of the above sets (for both, the Banach and quasi-Banach cases). We also complete some recent results from \cite{BDFP} for subsets of sequence spaces.

Estimates for the asymptotic behavior of the constants in the Bohnenblust--Hille inequality

A classical inequality due to H.F. Bohnenblust and E. Hille states that for every positive integer nn there is a constant Cn>0C_{n}>0 so that (∑i1,...,in=1N∣U(ei1,...,ein)∣2nn+1)n+12n≤Cn∣∣U∣∣(\sum\limits_{i_{1},...,i_{n}=1}^{N}|U(e_{i_{^{1}}},...,e_{i_{n}})|^{\frac{2n}{n+1}})^{\frac{n+1}{2n}}\leq C_{n}||U|| for every positive integer NN and every nn-linear mapping U:ℓ∞N×...×ℓ∞N→CU:\ell_{\infty}^{N}\times...\times\ell_{\infty}^{N}\rightarrow\mathbb{C}. The original estimates for those constants from Bohnenblust and Hille are Cn=nn+12n2n−12.C_{n}=n^{\frac{n+1}{2n}}2^{\frac{n-1}{2}}. In this note we present explicit formulae for quite better constants, and calculate the asymptotic behavior of these estimates, completing recent results of the second and third authors. For example, we show that, if CR,nC_{\mathbb{R},n} and CC,nC_{\mathbb{C},n} denote (respectively) these estimates for the real and complex Bohnenblust--Hille inequality then, for every even positive integer nn, CR,nπ=CC,n2=2n+28⋅rn\frac{C_{\mathbb{R},n}}{\sqrtπ} = \frac{C_{\mathbb{C},n}}{\sqrt{2}} = 2^{\frac{n+2}{8}}\cdot r_n for a certain sequence {rn}\{r_n\} which we estimate numerically to belong to the interval (1,3/2)(1,3/2) (the case nn odd is similar). Simultaneously, assuming that {rn}\{r_n\} is in fact convergent, we also conclude that lim⁡n→∞CR,nCR,n−1=lim⁡n→∞CC,nCC,n−1=21/8.\displaystyle \lim_{n \rightarrow \infty} \frac{C_{\mathbb{R},n}}{C_{\mathbb{R},n-1}} = \displaystyle \lim_{n \rightarrow \infty} \frac{C_{\mathbb{C},n}}{C_{\mathbb{C},n-1}}= 2^{1/8}.

The asymptotic growth of the constants in the Bohnenblust-Hille inequality is optimal

We provide (for both the real and complex settings) a family of constants, % (C_{m})_{m\in \mathbb{N}}, enjoying the Bohnenblust--Hille inequality and such that lim⁡m→∞CmCm−1=1\displaystyle\lim_{m\rightarrow \infty}\frac{C_{m}}{C_{m-1}}=1, i.e., their asymptotic growth is the best possible. As a consequence, we also show that the optimal constants, (Km)m∈N(K_{m})_{m\in \mathbb{N}}, in the Bohnenblust--Hille inequality have the best possible asymptotic behavior. Besides its intrinsic mathematical interest and potential applications to different areas, the importance of this result also lies in the fact that all previous estimates and related results for the last 80 years (such as, for instance, the multilinear version of the famous Grothendieck Theorem for absolutely summing operators) always present constants CmC_{m}'s growing at an exponential rate of certain power of mm.
