Multiband superconductors with degenerate excitation gaps

There is a tacit assumption that multiband superconductors are essentially the same as multigap superconductors. More precisely, it is usually assumed that the number of excitation gaps in the single-particle energy spectrum of a uniform superconductor determines the number of contributing bands in the corresponding superconducting model. Here we demonstrate that contrary to this widely accepted viewpoint, the superconducting magnetic properties are sensitive to the number of contributing bands even when the corresponding excitation gaps are degenerate and cannot be distinguished. In particular, we find that the crossover between superconductivity types I and II - the intertype regime - is strongly affected by difference between characteristic lengths of multiple contributing condensates. The reason for this is that condensates with diverse characteristic lengths coexisting in one system interfere constructively or destructively, which results in multi-condensate magnetic phenomena regardless of the presence/absence of the multigap structure in the single-particle excitation spectrum.

Distinct magnetic signatures of fractional vortex configurations in multiband superconductors

Vortices carrying fractions of a flux quantum are predicted to exist in multiband superconductors, where vortex core can split between multiple band-specific components of the superconducting condensate. Using the two-component Ginzburg-Landau model, we examine such vortex configurations in a two-band superconducting slab in parallel magnetic field. The fractional vortices appear due to the band-selective vortex penetration caused by different thresholds for vortex entry within each band-condensate, and stabilize near the edges of the sample. We show that the resulting fractional vortex configurations leave distinct fingerprints in the static measurements of the magnetization, as well as in ac dynamic measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, both of which can be readily used for the detection of these fascinating vortex states in several existing multiband superconductors.

Giant paramagnetic Meissner effect in multiband superconductors

Superconductors, ideally diamagnetic when in the Meissner state, can also exhibit paramagnetic behavior due to trapped magnetic flux. In the absence of pinning such paramagnetic response is weak, and ceases with increasing sample thickness. Here we show that in multiband superconductors paramagnetic response can be observed even in slab geometries, and can be far larger than any previous estimate - even multiply larger than the diamagnetic Meissner response for the same applied magnetic field. We link the appearance of this giant paramagnetic response to the broad crossover between conventional Type-I and Type-II superconductors, where Abrikosov vortices interact non-monotonically and multibody effects become important, causing unique flux configurations and their locking in the presence of surfaces.

Magnetic dilution on LaCrO$_3$

In this work, we study the effect of the magnetic dilution of Cr$^{3+}$ on the LaCrO$_3$ half doped with Al. Pure and half-doped samples were prepared by combustion method using urea as fuel. The crystal structure was investigated by X-ray diffraction. Rietveld analysis reveal a structural phase transition caused by the increase of the chemical pressure due difference of Al$^{3+}$ and Cr$^{3+}$ ionic radii. SEM images shows that the samples exhibit a spherical formation and irregular morphologies. Magnetization measurements as a function of temperature reveal an antiferromagnetic order in both samples with a large decrease of T$_N$ (Néel temperature) with Al doping. The reduction of frustration factor and the increase of the magnetic moment of the doped sample could be attributed to the breaking of the long-range antiferromagnetic order. The magnetic hysteresis loops show a typical antiferromagnetic behavior with a slightly spin canting for the doped sample.

Magnetic, electrical and structural properties of the new Re-doped ruthenocuprate Ru1-xRexSr2GdCu2Oy

Despite the discovery of new superconductors classes, high-Tc oxides continue to be a current topic, because of their complex phase diagrams and doping-dependant effects (allowing one to investigate the interaction between orbitals), as well as structural properties such as lattice distortion and charge ordering, among many others. Ruthenocuprates are magnetic superconductors in which the magnetic transition temperature is much higher than the critical superconducting temperature, making them unique compounds. With the aim of investigating the dilution of the magnetic Ru sub-lattice, we proposed the synthesis of the new Ru1-xRexSr2GdCu2Oy ruthenocupratetype family, adapting the known two-step process (double perovskite + CuO)by directly doping the double perovskite, thus obtaining the new perovskite compound Sr2GdRu1-xRexOy, which represents a new synthesis process to the best of our knowledge. Our samples were structurally characterised through X-ray diffraction, and the patterns were analysed via Rietveld refinement. A complete magnetic characterisation as a function of temperature and applied field, as well as transport measurements were carried out. We discuss our results in the light of the two-lattice model for ruthenocuprates, and a relation between RuO2 (magnetic) and CuO2 (superconductor) sublattices can clearly be observed.

Ruthenium-Europium configuration in the Eu2Ru2O7 pyrochlore

The magnetic and electronic properties of Eu2Ru2O7 are discussed in terms of the local ruthenium and europium coordinations, electronic band structure calculations and molecular orbital energy levels. A preliminary electronic structure was calculated within the LDA and LSDA+U approximations. The molecular orbital energy level diagrams have been used to interpret the Eu-Ru ligand spectrum and the ensuing magnetic properties. The orbital hybridizations and bonds are discussed.
