Bounding the Maximum of Dependent Random Variables

Let MnM_n be the maximum of nn zero-mean gaussian variables X1,..,XnX_1,..,X_n with covariance matrix of minimum eigenvalue λλ and maximum eigenvalue ΛΛ. Then, for n≥70n \ge 70, Pr⁡{Mn≥λ(2log⁡n−2.5−log⁡(2log⁡n−2.5))12−.68Λ}≥12.\Pr\{M_n \ge λ\left (2 \log n - 2.5 - \log(2 \log n - 2.5) \right )^\frac{1}{2} -.68Λ\} \ge \frac{1}{2}. Bounds are also given for tail probabilities other than 12\frac{1}{2}. Upper bounds are given for tail probabilities of the maximum of dependent identically distributed variables. As an application, the maximum of purely non-deterministic stationary Gaussian processes is shown to have the same first order asymptotic behaviour as the maximum of independent gaussian processes.

The number of graphs and a random graph with a given degree sequence

We consider the set of all graphs on n labeled vertices with prescribed degrees D=(d_1, ..., d_n). For a wide class of tame degree sequences D we prove a computationally efficient asymptotic formula approximating the number of graphs within a relative error which approaches 0 as n grows. As a corollary, we prove that the structure of a random graph with a given tame degree sequence D is well described by a certain maximum entropy matrix computed from D. We also establish an asymptotic formula for the number of bipartite graphs with prescribed degrees of vertices, or, equivalently, for the number of 0-1 matrices with prescribed row and column sums.

Asymptotic admissibility of priors and elliptic differential equations

We evaluate priors by the second order asymptotic behavior of the corresponding estimators.Under certain regularity conditions, the risk differences between efficient estimators of parameters taking values in a domain D, an open connected subset of R^d, are asymptotically expressed as elliptic differential forms depending on the asymptotic covariance matrix V. Each efficient estimator has the same asymptotic risk as a 'local Bayes' estimate corresponding to a prior density p. The asymptotic decision theory of the estimators identifies the smooth prior densities as admissible or inadmissible, according to the existence of solutions to certain elliptic differential equations. The prior p is admissible if the quantity pV is sufficiently small near the boundary of D. We exhibit the unique admissible invariant prior for V=I,D=R^d-{0). A detailed example is given for a normal mixture model.

Maximum entropy Edgeworth estimates of the number of integer points in polytopes

Abstract: The number of points x=(x1,x2,...xn)x=(x_1 ,x_2 ,...x_n) that lie in an integer cube CC in RnR^n and satisfy the constraints ∑jhij(xj)=si,1≤i≤d\sum_j h_{ij}(x_j )=s_i ,1\le i\le d is approximated by an Edgeworth-corrected Gaussian formula based on the maximum entropy density pp on x∈Cx \in C, that satisfies E∑jhij(xj)=si,1≤i≤dE\sum_j h_{ij}(x_j )=s_i ,1\le i\le d. Under pp, the variables X1,X2,...XnX_1 ,X_2 ,...X_n are independent with densities of exponential form. Letting SiS_i denote the random variable ∑jhij(Xj)\sum_j h_{ij}(X_j ), conditional on S=s,XS=s, X is uniformly distributed over the integers in CC that satisfy S=sS=s. The number of points in CC satisfying S=sS=s is p{S=s}exp⁡(I(p))p \{S=s\}\exp (I(p)) where I(p)I(p) is the entropy of the density pp. We estimate p{S=s}p \{S=s\} by pZ(s)p_Z(s), the density at ss of the multivariate Gaussian ZZ with the same first two moments as SS; and when dd is large we use in addition an Edgeworth factor that requires the first four moments of SS under pp. The asymptotic validity of the Edgeworth-corrected estimate is proved and demonstrated for counting contingency tables with given row and column sums as the number of rows and columns approaches infinity, and demonstrated for counting the number of graphs with a given degree sequence, as the number of vertices approaches infinity.
