Automorphism groups of ind-varieties of generalized flags

We compute the group of automorphisms of an arbitrary ind-variety of (possibly isotropic) generalized flags. Such an ind-variety is a homogeneous ind-space for one of the ind-groups $SL(\infty)$, $O(\infty)$ or $Sp(\infty)$. We show that the respective automorphism groups are much larger than $SL(\infty)$, $O(\infty)$ or $Sp(\infty)$, and present the answer in terms of Mackey groups. The latter are groups of automorphisms of nondegenerate pairings of (in general infinite-dimensional) vector spaces. An explicit matrix form of the automorphism group of an arbitrary ind-variety of generalized flags is also given. The case of the Sato grassmannian is considered in detail, and its automorphism group is the projectivization of the connected component of unity in the group Japanese $GL(\infty)$.

Bounded weight modules for basic classical Lie superalgebras at infinity

We classify simple bounded weight modules over the complex simple Lie superalgebras $\mathfrak{sl}(\infty |\infty)$ and $\mathfrak{osp} (m | 2n)$, when at least one of $m$ and $n$ equals $\infty$. For $\mathfrak{osp} (m | 2n)$ such modules are of spinor-oscillator type, i.e., they combine into one the known classes of spinor $\mathfrak{o} (m)$-modules and oscillator-type $\mathfrak{sp} (2n)$-modules. In addition, we characterize the category of bounded weight modules over $\mathfrak{osp} (m | 2n)$ (under the assumption $\dim \, \mathfrak{osp} (m | 2n) = \infty$) by reducing its study to already known categories of representations of $\mathfrak{sp} (2n)$, where $n$ possibly equals $\infty$. When classifying simple bounded weight $\mathfrak{sl}(\infty |\infty)$-modules, we prove that every such module is integrable over one of the two infinite-dimensional ideals of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}(\infty |\infty)_{\bar{0}}$. We finish the paper by establishing some first facts about the category of bounded weight $\mathfrak{sl} (\infty |\infty)$-modules.

Topological tensor representations of gl(V) for a space V of countable dimension

The Lie algebra $gl(V)$ is the Lie algebra of all endomorphisms of a countable-dimensional complex vector space $V$. We define a tensor category of topological representations of the Lie algebra $gl(V)$, so that $V$, its dual and the adjoint representation $gl(V)$ are objects of this category. This makes it an analogue of the category of finite-dimensional modules over the finite-dimensional Lie algebra $gl(n)$. Our main result is that this category is antiequivalent as a symmetric monoidal category to the category of tensor representations of the Lie algebra of finitary infinite matrices.

Universal tensor categories generated by dual pairs

Let $V_*\otimes V\rightarrow\mathbb{C}$ be a non-degenerate pairing of countable-dimensional complex vector spaces $V$ and $V_*$. The Mackey Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{gl}^M(V,V_*)$ corresponding to this paring consists of all endomorphisms $φ$ of $V$ for which the space $V_*$ is stable under the dual endomorphism $φ^*: V^*\rightarrow V^*$. We study the tensor Grothendieck category $\mathbb{T}$ generated by the $\mathfrak{g}$-modules $V$, $V_*$ and their algebraic duals $V^*$ and $V^*_*$. This is an analogue of categories considered in prior literature, the main difference being that the trivial module $\mathbb{C}$ is no longer injective in $\mathbb{T}$. We describe the injective hull $I$ of $\mathbb{C}$ in $\mathbb{T}$, and show that the category $\mathbb{T}$ is Koszul. In addition, we prove that $I$ is endowed with a natural structure of commutative algebra. We then define another category $_I\mathbb{T}$ of objects in $\mathbb{T}$ which are free as $I$-modules. Our main result is that the category ${}_I\mathbb{T}$ is also Koszul, and moreover that ${}_I\mathbb{T}$ is universal among abelian $\mathbb{C}$-linear tensor categories generated by two objects $X$, $Y$ with fixed subobjects $X'\hookrightarrow X$, $Y'\hookrightarrow Y$ and a pairing $X\otimes Y\rightarrow \text{\textbf{1}}$ where \textbf{1} is the monoidal unit. We conclude the paper by discussing the orthogonal and symplectic analogues of the categories $\mathbb{T}$ and ${}_I\mathbb{T}$.

On Categories of Admissible $\big(\mathfrak{g},\mathrm{sl}(2)\big)$-Modules

Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a complex finite-dimensional semisimple Lie algebra and $\mathfrak{k}$ be any $\mathrm{sl}(2)$-subalgebra of $\mathfrak{g}$. In this paper we prove an earlier conjecture by Penkov and Zuckerman claiming that the first derived Zuckerman functor provides an equivalence between a truncation of a thick parabolic category $\mathcal{O}$ for $\mathfrak{g}$ and a truncation of the category of admissible $(\mathfrak{g}, \mathfrak{k})-$modules. This latter truncated category consists of admissible $(\mathfrak{g}, \mathfrak{k})-$modules with sufficiently large minimal $\mathfrak{k}$-type. We construct an explicit functor inverse to the Zuckerman functor in this setting. As a corollary we obtain an estimate for the global injective dimension of the inductive completion of the truncated category of admissible $(\mathfrak{g}, \mathfrak{k})-$modules.

On ideals in U$(\frak{sl}(\infty))$, U$(\frak o(\infty))$, U$(\frak{sp}(\infty))$

We provide a review of results on two-sided ideals in the enveloping algebra U$(\frak g(\infty))$ of a locally simple Lie algebra $\frak g(\infty)$. We pay special attention to the case when $\frak g(\infty)$ is one of the finitary Lie algebras $\frak{sl}(\infty), \frak o(\infty), \frak{sp}(\infty)$. The main results include a description of all integrable ideals in U$(\frak g(\infty))$, as well as a criterion for the annihilator of an arbitrary (not necessarily integrable) simple highest weight module to be nonzero. This criterion is new for $\frak g(\infty)=\frak o(\infty), \frak{sp}(\infty)$. All annihilators of simple highest weight modules are integrable ideals for $\frak g(\infty)=\frak{sl}(\infty), \frak o(\infty)$. Finally, we prove that the lattices of ideals in U$(\frak o(\infty))$ and U$(\frak{sp}(\infty))$ are isomorphic.

Ordered tensor categories and representations of the Mackey Lie algebra of infinite matrices

We introduce (partially) ordered Grothendieck categories and apply results on their structure to the study of categories of representations of the Mackey Lie algebra of infinite matrices $\mathfrak{gl}^M\left(V,V_*\right)$. Here $\mathfrak{gl}^M\left(V,V_*\right)$ is the Lie algebra of endomorphisms of a nondegenerate pairing of countably infinite-dimensional vector spaces $V_*\otimes V\to\mathbb{K}$, where $\mathbb{K}$ is the base field. Tensor representations of $\mathfrak{gl}^M\left(V,V_*\right)$ are defined as arbitrary subquotients of finite direct sums of tensor products $(V^*)^{\otimes m}\otimes (V_*)^{\otimes n}\otimes V^{\otimes p}$ where $V^*$ denotes the algebraic dual of $V$. The category $\mathbb{T}^3_{\mathfrak{gl}^M\left(V,V_*\right)}$ which they comprise, extends a category $\mathbb{T}_{\mathfrak{gl}^M\left(V,V_*\right)}$ previously studied in [4, 12,17], and our main result is that $\mathbb{T}^3_{\mathfrak{gl}^M\left(V,V_*\right)}$ is a finite-length, Koszul self-dual, tensor category with a certain universal property that makes it into a "categorified algebra" defined by means of a handful of generators and relations. This result uses essentially the general properties of ordered Grothendieck categories, which yield also simpler proofs of some facts about the category $\mathbb{T}_{\mathfrak{gl}^M\left(V,V_*\right)}$ established in [12]. Finally, we discuss the extension of $\mathbb{T}^3_{\mathfrak{gl}^M\left(V,V_*\right)}$ by the algebraic dual $(V_*)^*$ of $V_*$.

Representation theory of Mackey Lie algebras and their dense subalgebras

In this article we review the main results of the earlier papers [I. Penkov, K. Styrkas, Tensor representations of infinite-dimensional root-reductive Lie algebras, in Developments and Trends in Infinite-Dimensional Lie Theory, Progress in Mathematics 288, Birkhäuser, 2011, pp. 127-150], [I. Penkov, V. Serganova, Categories of integrable $\mathfrak{sl}(\infty)$-, $\mathfrak{o}(\infty)$-, $\mathfrak{sp}(\infty)$-modules, in "Representation Theory and Mathematical Physics", Contemporary Mathematics 557 (2011), pp. 335-357] and [E. Dan-Cohen, I. Penkov, V. Serganova, A Koszul category of representations of finitary Lie algebras, preprint 2011, arXiv:1105.3407], and establish related new results in considerably greater generality. We introduce a class of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}^{M}$, which we call Mackey Lie algebras, and define monoidal categories $\mathbb{T}_{\mathfrak{g}^M}$ of tensor $\mathfrak{g}^M-$modules. We also consider dense subalgebras $\mathfrak{a} \subset \mathfrak{g}^M$ and corresponding categories $\mathbb{T}_\mathfrak{a}$. The locally finite Lie algebras $\mathfrak{sl}(V,W), \mathfrak{o}(V), \mathfrak{sp}(V)$ are dense subalgebras of respective Mackey Lie algebras. Our main result is that if $\mathfrak{g}^M$ is a Mackey Lie algebra and $\mathfrak{a} \subset \mathfrak{g}^M$ is a dense subalgebra, then the monoidal category $\mathbb{T}_\mathfrak{a}$ is equivalent to $\mathbb{T}_{\mathfrak{sl}(\infty)}$ or $\mathbb{T}_{\mathfrak{o}(\infty)}$; the latter monoidal categories have been studied in detail in [E. Dan-Cohen, I. Penkov, V. Serganova, A Koszul category of representations of finitary Lie algebras, preprint 2011, arXiv:1105.3407]. A possible choice of $\mathfrak{a}$ is the well-known Lie algebra of generalized Jacobi matrices.

Schubert decompositions for ind-varieties of generalized flags

Let $\mathbf{G}$ be one of the ind-groups $GL(\infty)$, $O(\infty)$, $Sp(\infty)$ and $\mathbf{P}\subset \mathbf{G}$ be a splitting parabolic ind-subgroup. The ind-variety $\mathbf{G}/\mathbf{P}$ has been identified with an ind-variety of generalized flags in the paper "Ind-varieties of generalized flags as homogeneous spaces for classical ind-groups" (Int. Math. Res. Not. 2004, no. 55, 2935--2953) by I. Dimitrov and I. Penkov. In the present paper we define a Schubert cell on $\mathbf{G}/\mathbf{P}$ as a $\mathbf{B}$-orbit on $\mathbf{G}/\mathbf{P}$, where $\mathbf{B}$ is any Borel ind-subgroup of $\mathbf{G}$ which intersects $\mathbf{P}$ in a maximal ind-torus. A significant difference with the finite-dimensional case is that in general $\mathbf{B}$ is not conjugate to an ind-subgroup of $\mathbf{P}$, whence $\mathbf{G}/\mathbf{P}$ admits many non-conjugate Schubert decompositions. We study the basic properties of the Schubert cells, proving in particular that they are usual finite-dimensional cells or are isomorphic to affine ind-spaces. We then define Schubert ind-varieties as closures of Schubert cells and study the smoothness of Schubert ind-varieties. Our approach to Schubert ind-varieties differs from an earlier approach by H. Salmasian in "Direct limits of Schubert varieties and global sections of line bundles" (J. Algebra 320 (2008), 3187--3198).

A categorification of the boson-fermion correspondence via representation theory of $sl(\infty)

In recent years different aspects of categorification of the boson-fermion correspondence have been studied. In this paper we propose a categorification of the boson-fermion correspondence based on the category of tensor modules of the Lie algebra $sl(\infty)$ of finitary infinite matrices. By $\mathbb T^+$ we denote the category of "polynomial" tensor $sl(\infty)$-modules. There is a natural "creation" functor $\mathcal T_N: \mathbb T^+\to \mathbb T^+$, $M\mapsto N\otimes M,\quad M,N\in \mathbb T^+$. The key idea of the paper is to employ the entire category $\mathbb T$ of tensor $sl(\infty)$-modules in order to define the "annihilation" functor $\mathcal D_N: \mathbb T^+\to \mathbb T^+$ corresponding to $\mathcal T_N$. We show that the relations allowing to express fermions via bosons arise from relations in the cohomology of complexes of linear endofunctors on $\mathbb T^+$.

On the Barth-Van de Ven-Tyurin-Sato theorem

The Barth-Van de Ven-Tyurin-Sato Theorem claims that any finite rank vector bundle on the infinite complex projective space $\mathbf{P}^\infty$ is isomorphic to a direct sum of line bundles. We establish sufficient conditions on a locally complete linear ind-variety $\mathbf{X}$ which ensure that the same result holds on $\mathbf{X}$. We then exhibit natural classes of locally complete linear ind-varieties which satisfy these sufficient conditions. Keywords: ind-variety, vector bundle

Algebraic methods in the theory of generalized Harish-Chandra modules

This paper is a review of results on generalized Harish-Chandra modules in the framework of cohomological induction. The main results, obtained during the last 10 years, concern the structure of the fundamental series of $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{k})-$modules, where $\mathfrak{g}$ is a semisimple Lie algebra and $\mathfrak{k}$ is an arbitrary algebraic reductive in $\mathfrak{g}$ subalgebra. These results lead to a classification of simple $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{k})-$modules of finite type with generic minimal $\mathfrak{k}-$types, which we state. We establish a new result about the Fernando-Kac subalgebra of a fundamental series module. In addition, we pay special attention to the case when $\mathfrak{k}$ is an eligible $r-$subalgebra (see the definition in section 4) in which we prove stronger versions of our main results. If $\mathfrak{k}$ is eligible, the fundamental series of $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{k})-$modules yields a natural algebraic generalization of Harish-Chandra's discrete series modules.

Linear ind-Grassmannians

We consider ind-varieties obtained as direct limits of chains of embeddings $X_1\stackrel{ϕ_1}{\hookrightarrow}\dots\stackrel{ϕ_{m-1}}{\hookrightarrow} X_m\stackrel{ϕ_m}{\hookrightarrow}X_{m+1}\stackrel{ϕ_{m+1}}{\hookrightarrow}\dots$, where each $X_m$ is a Grassmannian or an isotropic Grassmannian (possibly mixing Grassmannians and isotropic Grassmannians), and the embeddings $ϕ_m$ are linear in the sense that they induce isomorphisms of Picard groups. We prove that any such ind-variety is isomorphic to one of certain standard ind-Grassmannians and that the latter are pairwise non-isomorphic ind-varieties.

On ideals in the enveloping algebra of a locally simple Lie algebra

We study (two-sided) ideals $I$ in the enveloping algebra $\U(\frak g_\infty)$ of an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra $\frak g_\infty$ obtained as the union (equivalently, direct limit) of an arbitrary chain of embeddings of simple finite-dimensional Lie algebras $\frak g_1\to\frak g_2\to...\to\frak g_n\to...$ with $\lim\limits_{n\to\infty}\dim\frak g_n=\infty$. Our main result is an explicit description of the zero-sets of the corresponding graded ideals $\gr I$. We use this description and results of A. Zhilinskii to prove Baranov's conjecture that, if $\frak g_\infty$ is not diagonal in the sense of A. Baranov and A. Zhilinskii, then $\U(\frak g_\infty)$ admits a single non-zero proper ideal: the augmentation ideal. Our study is based on a complete description of the radical Poisson ideals in ${\bf S}^\cdot(\frak g_\infty)$ and their zero-sets. We then discuss in detail integrable ideals of $\U(\frak g_\infty)$, i.e. ideals $I\subset\U (\frak g_\infty)$ for which $I\cap\U (\frak g_n)$ is an intersection of ideals of finite-codimension in $\U(\frak g_n)$ for any $n\ge 1$. We present a classification of prime integrable ideals based on work of A. Zhilinskii. For $\frak g_\infty\cong\frak{sl}_\infty, \frak{so}_\infty$, all zero-sets of radical Poisson ideals of ${\bf S}^\cdot(\frak g_\infty)$ arise from prime integrable ideals of $\U(\frak g_\infty)$. For $\frak g_\infty\cong\frak{sp}_\infty$ only "half" of the zero-sets of Poisson ideals ${\bf S}^\cdot(\frak g_\infty)$ arise from integrable ideals of $\U(\frak g_\infty)$.

Levi components of parabolic subalgebras of finitary Lie algebras

We characterize locally semisimple subalgebras $ł$ of $\sl_\infty$, $\so_\infty$, and $\sp_\infty$ which are Levi components of parabolic subalgebras. Given $ł$, we characterize the parabolic subalgebras $\p$ such that $ł$ is a Levi component of $\p$. When the set of such self-normalizing parabolic subalgebras $\p$ is finite, we prove an estimate on its cardinality. We consider various examples which highlight the differences from the case of parabolic subalgebras of finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras.

On the structure of the fundamental series of generalized Harish-Chandra modules

We continue the study of the fundamental series of generalized Harish-Chandra modules initiated in [PZ2]. Generalized Harish-Chandra modules are (g,k)-modules of finite type where g is a semisimple Lie algebra and k \subset g is a reductive in g subalgebra. A first result of the present paper is that a fundamental series module is a g-module of finite length. We then define the notions of strongly and weakly reconstructible simple (g,k)-modules M which reflect to what extent M can be determined via its appearance in the socle of a fundamental series module. In the second part of the paper we concentrate on the case k \simeq sl(2) and prove a sufficient condition for strong reconstructibility. This strengthens our main result from [PZ2] for the case k = sl(2). We also compute the sl(2)-characters of all simple strongly reconstructible (and some weakly reconstructible) (g,sl(2))-modules. We conclude the paper by discussing a functor between a generalization of the category O and a category of (g,sl(2))-modules, and we conjecture that this functor is an equivalence of categories.

Categories of integrable $sl(\infty)$-, $o(\infty)$-, $sp(\infty)$-modules

We investigate several categories of integrable $sl(\infty)$-, $o(\infty)$-, $sp(\infty)$-modules. In particular, we prove that the category of integrable $sl(\infty)$-, $o(\infty)$-, $sp(\infty)$-modules with finite-dimensional weight spaces is semisimple. The most interesting category we study is the category $\widetilde{\mathrm{Tens}}_{\mathfrak{g}}$ of tensor modules. Its objects $M$ are defined as integrable modules of finite Loewy length such that the algebraic dual $M^*$ is also integrable and of finite Loewy length. We prove that the simple objects of $\widetilde{\mathrm{Tens}}_{\mathfrak{g}}$ are precisely the simple tensor modules, i.e. the simple subquotients of the tensor algebra of the direct sum of the natural and conatural representations. We also study injectives in $\widetilde{\mathrm{Tens}}_{\mathfrak{g}}$ and compute the Ext$^1$'s between simple modules. Finally, we characterize a certain subcategory $\mathrm{Tens}_{\mathfrak{g}}$ of $\widetilde{\mathrm{Tens}}_{\mathfrak{g}}$ as the unique minimal abelian full subcategory of the category of integrable modules which contains a non-trivial module and is closed under tensor product and algebraic dualization.

Parabolic and Levi subalgebras of finitary Lie algebras

Let $\g$ be a locally reductive complex Lie algebra which admits a faithful countable-dimensional finitary representation $V$. Such a Lie algebra is a split extension of an abelian Lie algebra by a direct sum of copies of $\sl_\infty$, $\so_\infty$, $\sp_\infty$, and finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras. A parabolic subalgebra of $\g$ is any subalgebra which contains a maximal locally solvable (that is, Borel) subalgebra. Building upon work by Dimitrov and the authors of the present paper, we give a general description of parabolic subalgebras of $\g$ in terms of joint stabilizers of taut couples of generalized flags. The main differences with the Borel subalgebra case are that the description of general parabolic subalgebras has to use both the natural and conatural modules, and that the parabolic subalgebras are singled out by further "trace conditions" in the suitable joint stabilizer. The technique of taut couples can also be used to prove the existence of a Levi component of an arbitrary subalgebra $\k$ of $\gl_\infty$. If $\k$ is splittable, we show that the linear nilradical admits a locally reductive complement in $\k$. We conclude the paper with descriptions of Cartan, Borel, and parabolic subalgebras of arbitrary splittable subalgebras of $\gl_\infty$.

Parabolic Subgroups of Real Direct Limit Groups

Let $G_R$ be a classical real direct limit Lie group and $g_R$ its Lie algebra. The parabolic subalgebras of the complexification $g_C$ were described by the first two authors. In the present paper we extend these results to $g_R$. This also gives a description of the parabolic subgroups of $G_R$. Furthermore, we give a geometric criterion for a parabolic subgroup $P_C$ of $G_C$ to intersect $G_R$ in a parabolic subgroup. This criterion involves the $G_R$-orbit structure of the flag ind-manifold $G_C/P_C$.
