An Accurate Cluster Selection Function for the J-PAS Narrow-Band wide-field survey

The impending Javalambre Physics of the accelerating universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) will be the first wide-field survey of $\gtrsim$ 8500 deg$^2$ to reach the `stage IV' category. Because of the redshift resolution afforded by 54 narrow-band filters, J-PAS is particularly suitable for cluster detection in the range z$<$1. The photometric redshift dispersion is estimated to be only $\sim 0.003$ with few outliers $\lesssim$ 4\% for galaxies brighter than $i\sim23$ AB, because of the sensitivity of narrow band imaging to absorption and emission lines. Here we evaluate the cluster selection function for J-PAS using N-body+semi-analytical realistic mock catalogues. We optimally detect clusters from this simulation with the Bayesian Cluster Finder, and we assess the completeness and purity of cluster detection against the mock data. The minimum halo mass threshold we find for detections of galaxy clusters and groups with both $>$80\% completeness and purity is $M_h \sim 5 \times 10^{13}M_{\odot}$ up to $z\sim 0.7$. We also model the optical observable, $M^*_{\rm CL}$-halo mass relation, finding a non-evolution with redshift and main scatter of $σ_{M^*_{\rm CL} | M_{\rm h}}\sim 0.14 \,dex$ down to a factor two lower in mass than other planned broad-band stage IV surveys, at least. For the $M_{\rm h} \sim 1 \times 10^{14}M_{\odot}$ Planck mass limit, J-PAS will arrive up to $z\sim 0.85$ with a $σ_{M^*_{\rm CL} | M_{\rm h}}\sim 0.12 \, dex$. Therefore J-PAS will provide the largest sample of clusters and groups up to $z\sim 0.8$ with a mass calibration accuracy comparable to X-ray data.

The production and escape of Lyman-Continuum radiation from star-forming galaxies at z~2 and their redshift evolution

We study the production rate of ionizing photons of a sample of 588 H$α$ emitters (HAEs) and 160 Lyman-$α$ emitters (LAEs) at $z=2.2$ in the COSMOS field in order to assess the implied emissivity from galaxies, based on their UV luminosity. By exploring the rest-frame Lyman Continuum (LyC) with GALEX/$NUV$ data, we find f$_{\rm esc} < 2.8\, (6.4)$% through median (mean) stacking. By combining the H$α$ luminosity density with IGM emissivity measurements from absorption studies, we find a globally averaged $\langle$f$_{\rm esc}\rangle$ of $5.9^{+14.5}_{-4.2}$ % at $z=2.2$ if we assume HAEs are the only source of ionizing photons. We find similarly low values of the global $\langle$f$_{\rm esc}\rangle$ at $z\approx3-5$, also ruling out a high $\langle$f$_{\rm esc}\rangle$ at $z<5$. These low escape fractions allow us to measure $ξ_{ion}$, the number of produced ionizing photons per unit UV luminosity, and investigate how this depends on galaxy properties. We find a typical $ξ_{ion} \approx 10^{24.77\pm0.04}$ Hz erg$^{-1}$ for HAEs and $ξ_{ion} \approx 10^{25.14\pm0.09}$ Hz erg$^{-1}$ for LAEs. LAEs and low mass HAEs at $z=2.2$ show similar values of $ξ_{ion}$ as typically assumed in the reionization era, while the typical HAE is three times less ionizing. Due to an increasing $ξ_{ion}$ with increasing EW(H$α$), $ξ_{ion}$ likely increases with redshift. This evolution alone is fully in line with the observed evolution of $ξ_{ion}$ between $z\approx2-5$, indicating a typical value of $ξ_{ion} \approx 10^{25.4}$ Hz erg$^{-1}$ in the reionization era.

ALMA maps the Star-Forming Regions in a Dense Gas Disk at z~3

We exploit long-baseline ALMA sub-mm observations of the lensed star-forming galaxy SDP 81 at z=3.042 to investigate the properties of inter-stellar medium on scales of 50-100pc. The kinematics of the CO gas within this system are well described by a rotationally-supported disk with an inclination-corrected rotation speed, v=320+/-20km/s and a dynamical mass of M=(3.5+/-1.0)x10^10Mo within a radius of 1.5 kpc. The disk is gas rich and unstable, with a Toomre parameter, Q=0.30+/-0.10 and so should collapse in to star-forming regions with Jeans length L_J~130pc. We identify five star-forming regions within the ISM on these scales and show that their scaling relations between luminosity, line-widths and sizes are significantly offset from those typical of molecular clouds in local Galaxies (Larson's relations). These offsets are likely to be caused by the high external hydrostatic pressure for the interstellar medium (ISM), P/kB=(40+/-20)x10^7K/cm3, which is ~10,000x higher than the typical ISM pressure in the Milky Way. The physical conditions of the star-forming ISM and giant molecular clouds appears to be similar to the those found in the densest environments in the local Universe, such as those in the Galactic center.
