Normally located polyhedra

Lattice polyhedra $Q_1$ and $Q_2$ with the same tail cone are said to be normally located if every lattice point in the Minkowski sum $Q_1+Q_2$ is the sum of lattice points from $Q_1$ and $Q_2$, respectively. We prove that if the normal fan of $Q_1$ refines the normal fan of $Q_2$, then there is a positive integer $k$ such that for any positive integer $s$ the polyhedra $skQ_1$ and $skQ_2$ are normally located. This result is based on an interpretation of the problem in terms of graded algebras and earlier results on surjectivity of the multiplicaiton map on homogeneous components. Also we provide an example of two lattice triangles $P$ and $Q$ on the plane such that for any positive integer $k$ the triangles $kP$ and $kQ$ are not normally located.

Root subgroups on affine spherical varieties

Given a connected reductive algebraic group $G$ and a Borel subgroup $B \subseteq G$, we study $B$-normalized one-parameter additive group actions on affine spherical $G$-varieties. We establish basic properties of such actions and their weights and discuss many examples exhibiting various features. We propose a construction of such actions that generalizes the well-known construction of normalized one-parameter additive group actions on affine toric varieties. Using this construction, for every affine horospherical $G$-variety $X$ we obtain a complete description of all $G$-normalized one-parameter additive group actions on $X$ and show that the open $G$-orbit in $X$ can be connected with every $G$-stable prime divisor via a suitable choice of a $B$-normalized one-parameter additive group action. Finally, when $G$ is of semisimple rank $1$, we obtain a complete description of all $B$-normalized one-parameter additive group actions on affine spherical $G$-varieties having an open orbit of a maximal torus $T \subseteq B$.

Lie algebras of vertical derivations on semiaffine varieties with torus actions

Let X be a normal variety endowed with an algebraic torus action. An additive group action $α$ on X is called vertical if a general orbit of $α$ is contained in the closure of an orbit of the torus action and the image of the torus normalizes the image of $α$ in Aut(X). Our first result in this paper is a classification of vertical additive group actions on X under the assumption that X is proper over an affine variety. Then we establish a criterion as to when the infinitesimal generators of a finite collection of additive group actions on X generate a finite-dimensional Lie algebra inside the Lie algebra of derivations of X.

Commutative algebraic monoid structures on affine spaces

We study commutative associative polynomial operations $\mathbb{A}^n\times\mathbb{A}^n\to\mathbb{A}^n$ with unit on the affine space $\mathbb{A}^n$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. A classification of such operations is obtained up to dimension 3. Several series of operations are constructed in arbitrary dimension. Also we explore a connection between commutative algebraic monoids on affine spaces and additive actions on toric varieties.

Equivariant embeddings of commutative linear algebraic groups of corank one

Let K be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, G_m=(K\{0},*) be its multiplicative group, and G_a=(K,+) be its additive group. Consider a commutative linear algebraic group G=G_m^r\times G_a. We study equivariant G-embeddings, i.e. normal G-varieties X containing G as an open orbit. We prove that X is a toric variety and all such actions of G on X correspond to Demazure roots of the fan of X. In these terms, the orbit structure of a G-variety X is described.

Additive actions on projective hypersurfaces

By an additive action on a hypersurface H in the projective space P^{n+1} we mean an effective action of a commutative unipotent group on P^{n+1} which leaves H invariant and acts on H with an open orbit. Brendan Hassett and Yuri Tschinkel have shown that actions of commutative unipotent groups on projective spaces can be described in terms of local algebras with some additional data. We prove that additive actions on projective hypersurfaces correspond to invariant multilinear symmetric forms on local algebras. It allows us to obtain explicit classification results for non-degenerate quadrics and quadrics of corank one.

Polyhedral divisors and SL_2-actions on affine T-varieties

In this paper we classify SL_2-actions on normal affine T-varieties that are normalized by the torus T. This is done in terms of a combinatorial description of T-varieties given by Altmann and Hausen. The main ingredient is a generalization of Demazure's roots of the fan of a toric variety. As an application we give a description of special SL_2-actions on normal affine varieties. We also obtain, in our terms, the classification of quasihomogeneous SL_2-threefolds due to Popov.

The automorphism group of a variety with torus action of complexity one

We consider a normal complete rational variety with a torus action of complexity one. In the main results, we determine the roots of the automorphism group and give an explicit description of the root system of its semisimple part. The results are applied to the study of almost homogeneous varieties. For example, we describe all almost homogeneous (possibly singular) del Pezzo k*-surfaces of Picard number one and all almost homogeneous (possibly singular) Fano threefolds of Picard number one having a reductive automorphism group with two-dimensional maximal torus.
