Characterization of affine surfaces with a torus action by their automorphism groups

In this paper we prove that if two normal affine surfaces $S$ and $S'$ have isomorphic automorphism groups, then every connected algebraic group acting regularly and faithfully on $S$ acts also regularly and faithfully on $S'$. Moreover, if $S$ is non-toric, we show that the dynamical type of a 1-torus action is preserved in presence of an additive group action. We also show that complex affine toric surfaces are determined by the abstract group structure of their regular automorphism groups in the category of complex normal affine surfaces using properties of the Cremona group. As a generalization to arbitrary dimensions, we show that complex affine toric varieties, with the exception of the algebraic torus, are uniquely determined in the category of complex affine normal varieties by their automorphism groups seen as ind-groups.

Cohen-Macaulay Du Bois singularities with a torus action of complexity one

Using Altmann-Hausen-Suss description of $\mathbb{T}$-varieties via divisorial fans and Kóvacs-Schwede-Smith characterization of Du Bois singularities, we study Cohen-Macaulay Du Bois $\mathbb{T}$-singularities of complexity one. We exhibit cohomological criteria for a $\mathbb{T}$-variety to be Cohen-Macaulay and Du Bois in terms of polyhedral divisors. We give an example of a Cohen-Macaulay Du Bois singularity of complexity one which does not have rational singularities.

On rational multiplicative group actions

We establish a one-to-one correspondence between rational multiplicative group actions on an algebraic variety $X$ and derivations $\partial\colon K_X\to K_X$ of the field of fractions $K_X$ of $X$ satisfying that there exists a generating set $\{a_i\}_{i\in I}$ of $K_X$ as a field such that $\partial(a_i)=λ_i a_i$ with $λ_i \in \mathbb{Z}$ for all $i\in I$. We call such derivations rational semisimple. Furthermore, we also prove the existence of a rational slice for every rational semisimple derivation, i.e., an element $s\in K_X$ such that $\partial(s)=s$. By analogy with the case of additive group actions case, we prove that $K_X\simeq K_X^{\mathbb{G}_m}(s)$ and that under this isomorphism the derivation $\partial$ is given by $\partial=s\frac{d}{ds}$. Here, $K_X^{\mathbb{G}_m}$ is the field of invariant of the $\mathbb{G}_m$-action.

Lie algebras of vertical derivations on semiaffine varieties with torus actions

Let X be a normal variety endowed with an algebraic torus action. An additive group action $α$ on X is called vertical if a general orbit of $α$ is contained in the closure of an orbit of the torus action and the image of the torus normalizes the image of $α$ in Aut(X). Our first result in this paper is a classification of vertical additive group actions on X under the assumption that X is proper over an affine variety. Then we establish a criterion as to when the infinitesimal generators of a finite collection of additive group actions on X generate a finite-dimensional Lie algebra inside the Lie algebra of derivations of X.

Additive group actions on affine T-varieties of complexity one in arbitrary characteristic

Let X be a normal affine T-variety of complexity at most one over a perfect field k, where T stands for the split algebraic torus. Our main result is a classification of additive group actions on X that are normalized by the T-action. This generalizes the classification given by the second author in the particular case where k is algebraically closed and of characteristic zero. With the assumption that the characteristic of k is positive, we introduce the notion of rationally homogeneous locally finite iterative higher derivations which corresponds geometrically to additive group actions on affine T-varieties normalized up to a Frobenius map. As a preliminary result, we provide a complete description of these additive group actions in the toric situation.

Smooth varieties with torus actions

In this paper we provide a characterization of smooth algebraic varieties endowed with a faithful algebraic torus action in terms of a combinatorial description given by Altmann and Hausen. Our main result is that such a variety X is smooth if and only if it is locally isomorphic in the étale topology to the affine space endowed with a linear torus action. Furthermore, this is the case if and only if the combinatorial data describing X is locally isomorphic in the étale topology to the combinatorial data describing affine space endowed with a linear torus action. Finally, we provide an effective method to check the smoothness of a Gm-threefold in terms of the combinatorial data.

On rational additive group actions

We characterize rational actions of the additive group on algebraic varieties defined over a field of characteristic zero in terms of a suitable integrability property of their associated velocity vector fields. This extends the classical correspondence between regular actions of the additive group on affine algebraic varieties and the so-called locally nilpotent derivations of their coordinate rings. This leads in particular to a complete characterization of regular additive group actions on semi-affine varieties in terms of their associated vector fields. Among other applications, we review properties of the rational counter-part of the Makar-Limanov invariant for affine varieties and describe the structure of rational homogeneous additive group actions on toric varieties.

The algebraic density property for affine toric varieties

In this paper we generalize the algebraic density property to not necessarily smooth affine varieties relative to some closed subvariety containing the singular locus. This property implies the remarkable approximation results for holomorphic automorphisms of the Andersén-Lempert theory. We show that an affine toric variety X satisfies this algebraic density property relative to a closed T-invariant subvariety Y if and only if X-Y is different from T. For toric surfaces we are able to classify those which posses a strong version of the algebraic density property (relative to the singular locus). The main ingredient in this classification is our proof of an equivariant version of Brunella's famous classification of complete algebraic vector fields in the affine plane.

On the order of an automorphism of a smooth hypersurface

In this paper we give an effective criterion as to when a positive integer q is the order of an automorphism of a smooth hypersurface of dimension n and degree d, for every d>2, n>1, (n,d)\neq (2,4), and \gcd(q,d)=\gcd(q,d-1)=1. This allows us to give a complete criterion in the case where q=p is a prime number. In particular, we show the following result: If X is a smooth hypersurface of dimension n and degree d admitting an automorphism of prime order p then p<(d-1)^{n+1}; and if p>(d-1)^n then X is isomorphic to the Klein hypersurface, n=2 or n+2 is prime, and p=Φ_{n+2}(1-d) where Φ_{n+2} is the (n+2)-th cyclotomic polynomial. Finally, we provide some applications to intermediate jacobians of Klein hypersurfaces.

Polyhedral divisors and SL_2-actions on affine T-varieties

In this paper we classify SL_2-actions on normal affine T-varieties that are normalized by the torus T. This is done in terms of a combinatorial description of T-varieties given by Altmann and Hausen. The main ingredient is a generalization of Demazure's roots of the fan of a toric variety. As an application we give a description of special SL_2-actions on normal affine varieties. We also obtain, in our terms, the classification of quasihomogeneous SL_2-threefolds due to Popov.

The automorphism group of a variety with torus action of complexity one

We consider a normal complete rational variety with a torus action of complexity one. In the main results, we determine the roots of the automorphism group and give an explicit description of the root system of its semisimple part. The results are applied to the study of almost homogeneous varieties. For example, we describe all almost homogeneous (possibly singular) del Pezzo k*-surfaces of Picard number one and all almost homogeneous (possibly singular) Fano threefolds of Picard number one having a reductive automorphism group with two-dimensional maximal torus.

Affine T-varieties of complexity one and locally nilpotent derivations

Let X=spec A be a normal affine variety over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0 endowed with an effective action of a torus T of dimension n. Let also D be a homogeneous locally nilpotent derivation on the normal affine Z^n-graded domain A, so that D generates a k_+-action on X that is normalized by the T-action. We provide a complete classification of pairs (X,D) in two cases: for toric varieties (n=\dim X) and in the case where n=\dim X-1. This generalizes previously known results for surfaces due to Flenner and Zaidenberg. As an application we compute the homogeneous Makar-Limanov invariant of such varieties. In particular we exhibit a family of non-rational varieties with trivial Makar-Limanov invariant.

Automorphisms of prime order of smooth cubic n-folds

In this paper we give an effective criterion as to when a prime number p is the order of an automorphism of a smooth cubic hypersurface of P^{n+1}, for a fixed n > 1. We also provide a computational method to classify all such hypersurfaces that admit an automorphism of prime order p. In particular, we show that p<2^{n+1} and that any such hypersurface admitting an automorphism of order p>2^n is isomorphic to the Klein n-fold. We apply our method to compute exhaustive lists of automorphism of prime order of smooth cubic threefolds and fourfolds. Finally, we provide an application to the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties.

Normal singularities with torus actions

We propose a method to compute a desingularization of a normal affine variety X endowed with a torus action in terms of a combinatorial description of such a variety due to Altmann and Hausen. This desingularization allows us to study the structure of the singularities of X. In particular, we give criteria for X to have only rational, (QQ-)factorial, or (QQ-)Gorenstein singularities. We also give partial criteria for X to be Cohen-Macaulay or log-terminal. Finally, we provide a method to construct factorial affine varieties with a torus action. This leads to a full classification of such varieties in the case where the action is of complexity one.

Ga-actions of fiber type on affine T-varieties

Let X be a normal affine T-variety, where T stands for the algebraic torus. We classify Ga-actions on X arising from homogeneous locally nilpotent derivations of fiber type. We deduce that any variety with trivial Makar-Limanov (ML) invariant is birationally decomposable as Y\times P^2, for some Y. Conversely, given a variety Y, there exists an affine variety X with trivial ML invariant birational to Y\times P^2. Finally, we introduce a new version of the ML invariant, called the FML invariant. According to our conjecture, the triviality of the FML invariant implies rationality. This conjecture holds in dimension at most 3.
