Coupling free electrons to a trapped-ion quantum computer

Freely propagating electrons may serve as quantum probes that can become coherently correlated with other quantum systems, offering access to advanced metrological resources. We propose a setup that coherently couples free electrons in an electron microscope to a trapped-ion quantum processor, enabling non-destructive, quantum-coherent detection and the accumulation of information across multiple electrons. Our analysis shows that single electrons can induce resolvable qubit excitations, establishing a platform for practical applications such as quantum-enhanced, dose-efficient electron microscopy.

Chaos-induced depletion of a Bose-Einstein condensate

The mean-field limit of a bosonic quantum many-body system is described by (mostly) non-linear equations of motion which may exhibit chaos very much in the spirit of classical particle chaos, i.e. by an exponential separation of trajectories in Hilbert space with a rate given by a positive Lyapunov exponent $λ$. The question now is whether $λ$ imprints itself onto measurable observables of the underlying quantum many-body system even at finite particle numbers. Using a Bose-Einstein condensate expanding in a shallow potential landscape as a paradigmatic example for a bosonic quantum many-body system, we show, that the number of non-condensed particles is subject to an exponentially fast increase, i.e. depletion. Furthermore, we show that the rate of exponential depletion is given by the Lyapunov exponent associated with the chaotic mean-field dynamics. Finally, we demonstrate that this chaos-induced depletion is accessible experimentally through the visibility of interference fringes in the total density after time of flight, thus opening the possibility to measure $λ$, and with it, the interplay between chaos and non-equilibrium quantum matter, in a real experiment.

Theory of Subcycle Linear Momentum Transfer in Strong-Field Tunneling Ionization

Interaction of a strong laser pulse with matter transfers not only energy but also linear momentum of the photons. Recent experimental advances have made it possible to detect the small amount of linear momentum delivered to the photoelectrons in strong-field ionization of atoms. We present numerical simulations as well as an analytical description of the subcycle phase (or time) resolved momentum transfer to an atom accessible by an attoclock protocol. We show that the light-field-induced momentum transfer is remarkably sensitive to properties of the ultrashort laser pulse such as its carrier-envelope phase and ellipticity. Moreover, we show that the subcycle resolved linear momentum transfer can provide novel insights into the interplay between nonadiabatic and nondipole effects in strong-field ionization. This work paves the way towards the investigation of the so-far unexplored time-resolved nondipole nonadiabatic tunneling dynamics.
