Discrete symmetries of Dirac's theory in the de Sitter manifold

The discrete symmetries of the Dirac field on the de Sitter manifold are studied taking into account that this has two portions that can play the role of physical space-times, namely the expanding and a collapsing universes. The proper discrete isometries which preserve the portion have a physical meaning in contrast to the improper ones which change the portion remaining thus of a mere mathematical interest. The discrete symmetries generated by the proper isometries and charge conjugation are studied in physical frames on the expanding portion shoving that all the discrete transformations reversing the cosmic time are local depending on a local boost matrix. Thus the discrete group of Dirac's theory in the de Sitter expanding universe is obtained showing that this is of the order 16 having a multiplication table similar to that of Dirac's theory in special relativity. Moreover, all the discrete de Sitter isometries, including the improper ones, are studied in conformal frames for obtaining a global image about the de Sitter isometries in spite of the fact that these cannot be gathered in a larger discrete group with physical meaning.

The role of Pryce's spin and coordinate operators in the theory of massive Dirac fermions

It is shown that the components of Pryce's spin operator of Dirac's theory are $SU(2)$ generators of a representation carried by the space of Pauli's spinors determining the polarization of the plane wave solutions of Dirac's equation. These operators are conserved via Noether theorem such that new conserved polarization operators can be defined for various polarizations. The corresponding one-particle operators of quantum theory are derived showing how these are related to the isometry generators of the massive Dirac fermions of any polarization, including momentum-dependent ones. In this manner, the problem of separating conserved spin and orbital angular momentum operators is solved naturally. Moreover, the operator proposed by Pryce as mass-center coordinate is studied showing that after quantization this becomes in fact the dipole one-particle operator. As an example, the quantities determining the principal one-particle operators are derived for the first time in momentum-helicity basis.

Canonical quantization of the covariant fields on de Sitter spacetimes

The properties of the covariant quantum fields on de Sitter spacetimes are investigated focusing on the isometry generators and Casimir operators in order to establish the equivalence among the covariant representations and the unitary irreducible ones of the de Sitter isometry group. For the Dirac quantum field it is shown that the spinor covariant representation, transforming the Dirac field under de Sitter isometries, is equivalent with a direct sum of two unitary irreducible representations of the $Sp(2,2)$ group, transforming alike the particle and antiparticle field operators in momentum representation. Their basis generators and Casimir operators are written down finding that the covariant representations are equivalent with unitary irreducible ones from the principal series whose canonical weights are determined by the fermion mass and spin.

Integral representation of the scalar propagators on the de Sitter expanding universe

A new type of integral representation is proposed for the propagators of the massive Klein-Gordon field minimally coupled to the gravity of the de Sitter expanding universe. This representation encapsulates the effects of the Heaviside step functions of the Feynman propagators making possible for the first time the calculation of Feynman diagrams involving scalar particles on this background. In order to convince that, a simple example is given outlining the amplitudes in the second order of perturbations of the Compton effect in the de Sitter scalar quantum electrodynamics.

Light from Schwarzschild Black Holes in de Sitter expanding universe

A new method is applied for deriving the redshift and shadow of a Schwarzschild black hole moving freely in the de Sitter expanding universe as recorded by a co-moving remote observer. This method is manly algebraic focusing on the transformation of the conserved quantities under the de Sitter isometry relating the black hole proper co-moving frame to observer's one. Hereby one extracts the general expressions of the redshifts and shadows of the black holes having peculiar velocities but their expressions are too extended to be written down here. Therefore, only some particular cases and intuitive expansions are presented while the complete results are given in an algebraic code on computer \cite{Comp}.

First order QED effects on a spatially flat FLRW spacetime with a Milne-type scale factor

The quantum electrodynamics (QED) on a spatially flat $(1+3)$-dimensional Friedmann-Lema\^ itre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetime with a Milne-type scale factor is outlined focusing on the amplitudes of the allowed effects in the first order of perturbations. The definition of the transition rates is reconsidered obtaining an appropriate angular behavior of the probability of the pair creation from a photon.

Flat limit of the de Sitter QFT in the rest frame vacuum

The problem of the flat limits of the scalar and spinor fields on the de Sitter expanding universe is considered in the rest frame vacuum where the frequencies are separated in rest frames as in special relativity. The phases of the fundamental solutions of these fields are regularized in order to obtain Minkowskian flat limits. New expressions of scalar mode functions or Dirac spinors reaching natural flat limits are given in the rest frame vacuum and suitable approximate formulas are proposed. In this manner the flat limit is correctly defined for the entire quantum theory since the one-particle operators tend to those of special relativity.

Longitudinal Doppler effect in de Sitter expanding universe

A new redshift formula is obtained considering the longitudinal Doppler effect in the de Sitter expanding universe where the relative geodesic motion is governed by the Lorenzian isometries of our new de Sitter relativity [I. I. Cot\u aescu, {Eur. Phys. J. C} {\bf 77} (2017) 485]. This formula combines in a non-trivial manner the well-known cosmological contribution given by Lama\' itre's law with that of the relative motion of the source with respect to a fixed observer as in de Sitter relativity instead of special relativity. Other related quantities as the dispersion relation, the propagation time of the photon and the real distance between source and observer at the moment of observation are discussed pointing out their specific features in the de Sitter relativity.

Rest frame vacua of massive Klein-Gordon fields on spatially flat FLRW spacetimes

We propose a method of projecting the quantum states from a state space of a given geometry into another state space generated by a different geometry, taking care on the correct normalization which is crucial in interpreting the quantum theory. Thanks to this method we can define on any spatially flat FLRW spacetime states in which genuine Minkowskian parameters are measured. We use these Minkowskian states for separating the frequencies in the rest frames of the massive scalar particles defining thus the scalar rest frame vacuum. We show that this vacuum is stable on the de Sitter expanding universe where the energy is conserved. In contrast, on a spatially flat FLRW spacetime with a Milne-type scale factor this vacuum results to be dynamic, corresponding to a time-dependent rest energy interpreted as an effective mass. This dynamic vacuum give rise to a cosmological particle creation which is significant only in the early Milne-type universe considered here. Some interesting features of this new effect are pointed out in a brief analysis.

Elements of Linear Algebra. Lecture Notes

These pedagogical lecture notes address to the students in theoretical physics for helping them to understand the mechanisms of the linear operators defined on finite-dimensional vector spaces equipped with definite or indefinite inner products. The importance of the Dirac conjugation is pointed out presenting its general theory and a version of the Riesz theorem for the indefinite inner product spaces, based on the Dirac-Riesz map that combines the action of the Riesz map with that of the metric operator. The matrix representations of the linear operators on vector spaces with definite or indefinite inner products is also presented.

Maxwell-Juttner distribution for rigidly-rotating flows in spherically symmetric spacetimes using the tetrad formalism

We consider rigidly rotating states in thermal equilibrium on static spherically symmetric spacetimes. Using the Maxwell-Juttner equilibrium distribution function, onstructed as a solution of the relativistic Boltzmann equation, the equilibrium particle flow four-vector, stress-energy tensor and the transport coefficients in the Marle model are computed. Their properties are discussed in view of the topology of the speed-of-light surface induced by the rotation for two classes of spacetimes: maximally symmetric (Minkowski, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter) and charged (Reissner-Nordstrom) black-hole spacetimes. To facilitate our analysis, we employ a non-holonomic comoving tetrad field, obtained unambiguously by applying a Lorentz boost on a fixed background tetrad.

On the de Sitter Tardyons and Tachyons

It is shown that on the de Sitter manifolds the tachyonic geodesics are restricted such that the classical tachyons cannot exist on this manifold at any time. On the contrary, the theory of the scalar quantum tachyons is free of any restriction. The tachyonic scalar and Dirac plane waves are deduced in this geometry, pointing out that these are well-defined, behaving as tempered distributions at any moment.

Partial wave analysis of the Dirac fermions scattered from Reissner - Nordstr\" om charged black holes

The asymptotic form of Dirac spinors in the field of the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole are derived for the scattering states (with $E>mc^2$) obtaining the phase shifts of the partial wave analysis of Dirac fermions scattered from charged black holes. The elastic scattering and absorption are studied giving analytic formulas for the partial amplitudes and cross sections. A graphical study is performed for analysing the differential cross section (forward/backward scattering) and the polarization degree as functions of scattering angle.

Relativistic persistent currents in ideal Aharonov-Bohm rings and cylinders

The exact solutions of the complete (1+3)-dimensional Dirac equation of fermions moving in ideal Aharonov-Bohm (AB) rings and cylinders are used for deriving the exact expressions of the relativistic partial currents. It is shown that these currents can be related to the derivative of the fermion energy with respect to the flux parameter, just as in the non-relativistic case. However, a new and remarkable relativistic effect is the saturation of the partial currents for high values of the total angular momentum. Based on this property, the total relativistic persistent currents at $T=0$ is evaluated for rings and cylinders obtaining approximative simple closed formulas.

Acceleration in de Sitter spacetimes

We propose a definition of uniform accelerated frames in de Sitter spacetimes applying the Nachtmann method of introducing coordinates using suitable point-dependent isometries. In order to recover the well-known Rindler approach in the flat limit, we require the transformation between the static frame and the accelerated one to depend continuously on acceleration, obtaining thus the natural generalization of the Rindler transformation to the de Sitter spacetimes of any dimensions.

Isometry generators in momentum representation of the Dirac theory on the de Sitter spacetime

In this paper, it is shown that the covariant representation (CR) transforming the Dirac field under de Sitter isometries is equivalent to a direct sum of two unitary irreducible representations (UIRs) of the $Sp(2,2)$ group transforming alike the particle and antiparticle field operators in momentum representation. Their basis generators and Casimir operators are written down for the first time finding that these representations are equivalent to a UIR from the principal series whose canonical labels are determined by the fermion mass and spin. The properties of the conserved observables (i. e. one-particle operators) associated to the de Sitter isometries via Noether theorem and of the corresponding Pauli-Lubanski type operator are also pointed out.

Partial wave analysis of the Dirac fermions scattered from Schwarzschild black holes

Asymptotic analytic solutions of the Dirac equation, giving the scattering modes (of the continuous energy spectrum, $E>mc^2$) in Schwarzschild's chart and Cartesian gauge, are used for building the partial wave analysis of Dirac fermions scattered by black holes. The contribution of the bound states to absorption and possible resonant scattering is neglected because of some technical difficulties related to the discrete spectrum that is less studied so far. In this framework, the analytic expressions of the differential cross section and induced polarization degree are derived in terms of scattering angle, mass of the black hole, energy and mass of the fermion. Moreover, the closed form of the absorption cross section due to the scattering modes is derived showing that in the high-energy limit this tends to the event horizon area regardless of the fermion mass (including zero). A graphical study presents the differential cross section analyzing the forward/backward scattering (known also as glory scattering) and the polarization degree as functions of scattering angle. The graphical analysis shows the presence of oscillations in scattering intensity around forward/backward directions, phenomena known as spiral scattering. The energy dependence of the differential cross section is also established by using analytical and graphical methods.

Relativistic persistent currents in ideal Aharonov-Bohm rings

The exact solutions of the complete Dirac equation for fermions moving in ideal Aharonov-Bohm rings are used for deriving the exact expressions of the relativistic partial currents. It is show that as in the non-relativistic case these currents can be related to the derivative of the fermion energy with respect to the flux parameter. A specific relativistic effect is the saturation of the partial currents for high values of the total angular momentum. Based on this property, the total relativistic persistent current at $T=0$ is evaluated giving its analytical expression and showing how this depend on the ring parameters.

Discrete symmetries determining scalar quantum modes on the de Sitter spacetime

The action of the discrete symmetries on the scalar mode functions of the de Sitter spacetime is studied. The invariance with respect to a combination of discrete symmetries is put forward as a criterion to select a certain vacuum out of a family of vacua. The implications of the choices for eigenfunctions of various common sets of commuting operators are explored, and the results are compared to the different original choices from the literature that have been utilized in order to exhibit thermal effects.

On anti-de Sitter oscillators and de Sitter anti-oscillators

We revisit the principal arguments for interpreting the free quantum fields on anti-de Sitter or de Sitter spacetimes of any dimensions as oscillators or respectively anti-oscillators. In addition, we point out that there exists a chart on the de Sitter background where the free Dirac field becomes a genuine anti-oscillator in the non-relativistic limit in the sense of special relativity.

How to kill the Unruh effect

How to kill the Unruh effect? Very simple, by requiring the Rindler transformation to behave continuously for vanishing acceleration. Then the Unruh effect disappears as we show in the case of the massive scalar quantum field. The main point is that the continuity condition restricts the integral of the mode expansion to the positive energy spectrum, suppressing thus the $β$ - terms of the Bogoliubov transformation.

On the rest and flat limits of the scalar modes on the de Sitter spacetime

The scalar mode functions on the spatially flat FLRW chart of the de Sitter spacetime are redefined in order to obtain a natural frequencies separation in the special local charts where the momentum vanishes, called here (natural) rest frames. This can be done since in such frames the mode functions are eigenfunctions of the energy operator. Moreover, the most general criteria for choosing the suitable phase factors of the mode functions able to simultaneously determine the correct rest and flat limits are established. These results are compared to the different original choices from the literature. Pacs: 04.62.+v

Covariant representations of the de Sitter isometry group

We show that the induced representations of the de Sitter isometry group proposed many years ago by Nachtmann are equivalent to those derived from our general theory of external symmetry. These methods complete each other leading to a coherent theory of covariant fields with spin on the de Sitter spacetime. Some technical details of these representations are presented here for the first time.

The de Sitter QED in Coulomb gauge: first order transition amplitudes

We construct the de Sitter QED in Coulomb gauge assuming that the quantum modes are prepared by a global apparatus which is able to determine a stable and invariant vacuum state, independent on the local coordinates. Then we proceed in traditional manner postulating the appropriate equal-time commutators and anti-commutators of the interacting fields and deriving the perturbation expansion of the scattering operator. In this approach the $in -out$ transitions amplitudes, measured by the same global apparatus, can be calculated exactly by using the reduction formalism and the perturbation procedure as in the flat case but with significant differences due to the de Sitter geometry. A specific feature is that the gravity eliminates the constraints due to the simultaneous momentum-energy conservation giving rise to QED transitions with non-vanishing amplitudes even in the first order of perturbations. Of a special interest could be the first order amplitudes of the electromagnetic particle creation allowed by the expansion of the de Sitter universe. We show that this effect is significant only in the very strong gravity of the early universe.

The free Dirac spinors of the spin basis on the de Sitter expanding universe

It is shown that on the de Sitter space-time the global behavior of the free Dirac spinors in momentum representation is determined by several phases factors which are functions of momentum with special properties. Such suitable phase functions can be chosen for writing down the free Dirac quantum modes of the spin basis that are well-defined even for the particles at rest in the moving local charts where the modes of the helicity basis remain undefined. Under quantization these modes lead to a basis in which the one-particle operators keep their usual forms apart from the energy operator which lays out a specific term which depend on the concrete phase function one uses.

Dirac-Kahler equations on curved spacetimes

A Lagrangian theory giving rise to a version of the Dirac-Kahler equations on curved backgrounds is considered. The principal pieces are the general fields which have values in the algebra of the Dirac matrices and satisfy a Dirac-type equation. Their components are scalar, pseudo-scalar, vector, axial-vector fields and fields strength which satisfy an irreducible systems of first-order Dirac-Kahler equations having remarkable gauge and duality properties similar to those of the flat case. The vector and axial-vector fields are the physical potentials giving rise to the field strength while the scalar fields play an auxiliary role and can be eliminated by fixing a suitable gauge. The chiral components of the field strength are either self-dual or anti self-dual with respect to the Hodge duality.

Discrete O(1,4) transformations and new scalar quantum modes on the de Sitter spacetime

It is shown that the isometry group of the de Sitter spacetime includes two different three-dimensional Abelian subgroups which transform between themselves through a discrete isometry corresponding to the time reversal in the five-dimensional Minkowski spacetime embedding the de Sitter one. The eigenfunctions of the generators of these Abelian subgroups form two different sets of quantum modes correlated by the mentioned isometry.

The physical meaning of the de Sitter invariants

We study the Lie algebras of the covariant representations transforming the matter fields under the de Sitter isometries. We point out that the Casimir operators of these representations can be written in closed forms and we deduce how their eigenvalues depend on the field's rest energy and spin. For the scalar, vector and Dirac fields, which have well-defined field equations, we express these eigenvalues in terms of mass and spin obtaining thus the principal invariants of the theory of free fields on the de Sitter spacetime. We show that in the flat limit we recover the corresponding invariants of the Wigner irreducible representations of the Poincare group.

The quantum theory of the free Maxwell field on the de Sitter expanding universe

The theory of the free Maxwell field in two moving frames on the de Sitter spacetime is investigated pointing out that the conserved momentum and energy operators do not commute to each other. This leads us to consider new plane waves solutions of the Maxwell equation which are eigenfunctions of the energy operator. Such particular solutions complete the theory in which only the solutions of given momentum were considered so far. The energy eigenfunctions can be obtained thanks to our new time-evolution picture proposed previously for the scalar and Dirac fields. Considering both these types of modes, it is shown that the second quantization of the free electromagnetic potential in the Coulomb gauge can be done in a canonical manner as in special relativity. The principal conserved one-particle operators associated to Killing vectors are derived, concentrating on the energy, momentum and total angular momentum operators.

Polarized vector bosons on the de Sitter expanding universe

The quantum theory of the vector field minimally coupled to the gravity of the de Sitter spacetime is built in a canonical manner starting with a new complete set of quantum modes of given momentum and helicity derived in the moving chart of conformal time. It is shown that the canonical quantization leads to new vector propagators which satisfy similar equations as the propagators derived by Tsamis and Woodard [{\em J.Math.Phys.} {\bf 48} (2007) 052306] but having a different structure. The one-particle operators are also written down pointing out that their properties are similar with those found already in the quantum theory of the scalar, Dirac and Maxwell free fields.

The Schr\" odinger picture of the Dirac quantum mechanics on spatially flat Robertson-Walker backgrounds

The Schr\" odinger picture of the Dirac quantum mechanics is defined in charts with spatially flat Robertson-Walker metrics and Cartesian coordinates. The main observables of this picture are identified, including the interacting part of the Hamiltonian operator produced by the minimal coupling with the gravitational field. It is shown that in this approach new Dirac quantum modes on de Sitter spacetimes may be found analytically solving the Dirac equation.

Remarks on a solvable cosmological model

We present an exact analytical solution of the Einstein equations with cosmological constant in a spatially flat Robertson-Walker metric. This is interpreted as an isotropic Lemaitre-type version of the cosmological Friedmann model. External symmetry in general relativity

We propose a generalization of the isometry transformations to the geometric context of the field theories with spin where the local frames are explicitly involved. We define the external symmetry transformations as isometries combined with suitable tetrad gauge transformations and we show that these form a group which is locally isomorphic with the isometry one. We point out that the symmetry transformations that leave invariant the equations of the fields with spin have generators with specific spin terms which represent new physical observables. The examples we present are the generators of the central symmetry and those of the maximal symmetries of the de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spacetimes derived in different tetrad gauge fixings.
