Refined Topological Amplitudes from the $Ω$-Background in String Theory

It was recently shown that the $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 string topological amplitudes in the heterotic weak coupling limit generate a six-dimensional Melvin space, providing a description of the $Ω$-background in string theory, where string propagation can be exactly studied. In this work, we generalise the analysis to the refined case of the $Ω$-background with two independent deformation parameters. The Melvin space is now ten-dimensional and is extended by an action on the internal K3 compactification manifold of the heterotic superstring, corresponding to an ${\rm SU(2)}_R$ rotation in the field theory description. We identify the class of heterotic topological amplitudes realising this background as the scattering of two anti-self-dual gravitons and arbitrary numbers of anti-self-dual graviphotons, self-dual vector fields of the dilaton multiplet, together with self-dual magnetic fluxes along the K3. In the field theory limit, our result correctly reproduces the perturbative part of the Nekrasov free energy in the case where both equivariant parameters are turned on.

Three-Generation Super No-Scale Models in Heterotic Superstrings

We derive the conditions for the one-loop contribution to the cosmological constant to be exponentially suppressed in a class of heterotic string compactifications with three generations of chiral matter, where supersymmetry is spontaneously broken à la Scherk-Schwarz. Using techniques of partial unfolding based on the Hecke congruence subgroup $Γ_0(2)$ of the modular group to extract the leading asymptotics, we show that the super no-scale condition $n_B=n_F$ between the degeneracies of massless bosons $n_B$ and fermions $n_F$ in the full string spectrum is necessary but not sufficient, and needs to be supplemented by additional conditions which we identify. We use these results to construct three-generation Pati-Salam models with interesting phenomenological characteristics.

Super No-Scale Models with Pati-Salam Gauge Group

We construct and classify heterotic models where $\mathcal N=1$ supersymmetry is spontaneously broken à la Scherk-Schwarz. The theories contain chiral matter transforming under an observable Pati-Salam gauge symmetry and are classified according to a minimal set of phenomenological requirements, including the shape of their one-loop effective potential. The latter is essentially controlled by two parameters that are easily computable in terms of the defining string data. By imposing Bose-Fermi degeneracy at the massless level, known as the super no-scale condition, it is possible to suppress the value of the effective potential to exponentially small values, provided the compactification scale is sufficiently lower than the string scale. Furthermore, we compare the space of $\sim 10^{10}$ Pati-Salam models with their parent theories based on SO(10) gauge symmetry and confirm the universality structure of their effective one-loop potentials.

Chiral Heterotic Strings with Positive Cosmological Constant

We present explicit examples of semi-realistic heterotic models with spontaneously broken supersymmetry, which dynamically lead to breaking scales much smaller than $M_{\rm Planck}$ and exponentially small positive values for the cosmological constant. Contrary to field theoretic intuition, we find that the global structure of the effective potential is significantly affected by contributions of massive and non-level matched string states and we investigate the conditions that dynamically ensure a number of desired properties.

One-Loop BPS amplitudes as BPS-state sums

Recently, we introduced a new procedure for computing a class of one-loop BPS-saturated amplitudes in String Theory, which expresses them as a sum of one-loop contributions of all perturbative BPS states in a manifestly T-duality invariant fashion. In this paper, we extend this procedure to all BPS-saturated amplitudes of the form \int_F Γ_{d+k,d} Φ, with Φ being a weak (almost) holomorphic modular form of weight -k/2. We use the fact that any such Φ can be expressed as a linear combination of certain absolutely convergent Poincaré series, against which the fundamental domain F can be unfolded. The resulting BPS-state sum neatly exhibits the singularities of the amplitude at points of gauge symmetry enhancement, in a chamber-independent fashion. We illustrate our method with concrete examples of interest in heterotic string compactifications.

$\mathcal{N}=2^\star$ from Topological Amplitudes in String Theory

In this paper, we explicitly construct string theory backgrounds that realise the so-called $\mathcal N=2^\star$ gauge theory. We prove the consistency of our models by calculating their partition function and obtaining the correct gauge theory spectrum. We further provide arguments in favour of the universality of our construction which covers a wide class of models all of which engineer the same gauge theory. We reproduce the corresponding Nekrasov partition function once the $Ω$-deformation is included and the appropriate field theory limit taken. This is achieved by calculating the topological amplitudes $F_g$ in the string models. In addition to heterotic and type II constructions, we also realise the mass deformation in type I theory, thus leading to a natural way of uplifting the result to the instanton sector.

Generalised universality of gauge thresholds in heterotic vacua with and without supersymmetry

We study one-loop quantum corrections to gauge couplings in heterotic vacua with spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. Although in non-supersymmetric constructions these corrections are not protected and are typically model dependent, we show how a universal behaviour of threshold differences, typical of supersymmetric vacua, may still persist. We formulate specific conditions on the way supersymmetry should be broken for this to occur. Our analysis implies a generalised notion of threshold universality even in the case of unbroken supersymmetry, whenever extra charged massless states appear at enhancement points in the bulk of moduli space. Several examples with universality, including non-supersymmetric chiral models in four dimensions, are presented.

Probing the Moduli Dependence of Refined Topological Amplitudes

With the aim of providing a worldsheet description of the refined topological string, we continue the study of a particular class of higher derivative couplings $F_{g,n}$ in the type II string effective action compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold. We analyse first order differential equations in the anti-holomorphic moduli of the theory, which relate the $F_{g,n}$ to other component couplings. From the point of view of the topological theory, these equations describe the contribution of non-physical states to twisted correlation functions and encode an obstruction for interpreting the $F_{g,n}$ as the free energy of the refined topological string theory. We investigate possibilities of lifting this obstruction by formulating conditions on the moduli dependence under which the differential equations simplify and take the form of generalised holomorphic anomaly equations. We further test this approach against explicit calculations in the dual heterotic theory.

Universality of Gauge Thresholds in Non-Supersymmetric Heterotic Vacua

We compute one-loop threshold corrections to non-abelian gauge couplings in four-dimensional heterotic vacua with spontaneously broken $\cal N = 2 \to \cal N = 0$ supersymmetry, obtained as Scherk-Schwarz reductions of six-dimensional K3 compactifications. As expected, the gauge thresholds are no-longer BPS protected, and receive contributions also from the excitations of the RNS sector. Remarkably, the difference of thresholds for non-abelian gauge couplings is BPS saturated and exhibits a universal behaviour independently of the orbifold realisation of K3. Moreover, the thresholds and their difference develop infra-red logarithmic singularities whenever charged BPS-like states, originating from the twisted RNS sector, become massless at special loci in the classical moduli space.

Universality of radiative corrections to gauge couplings for strings with spontaneously broken supersymmetry

I review recent work on computing radiative corrections to non-abelian gauge couplings in four-dimensional heterotic vacua with spontaneously broken supersymmetry. The prototype models can be considered as K3 surfaces with additional Scherk-Schwarz fluxes inducing the spontaneous $\mathcal{N}=2 \to \mathcal{N}=0$ breaking. Remarkably, although the gauge thresholds are no longer BPS protected and receive contributions also from the excitations of the RNS sector, their difference is still exactly computable and universal. Higher Spins in Hyper-Superspace

We extend the results of arXiv:1401.1645 on the generalized conformal Sp(2n)-structure of infinite multiplets of higher spin fields, formulated in spaces with extra tensorial directions (hyperspaces), to the description of OSp(1|2n)-invariant infinite-dimensional higher-spin supermultiplets formulated in terms of scalar superfields on flat hyper-superspaces and on OSp(1|n) supergroup manifolds. We find generalized superconformal transformations relating the superfields and their equations of motion in flat hyper-superspace with those on the OSp(1|n) supermanifold. We then use these transformations to relate the two-, three- and four-point correlation functions of the scalar superfields on flat hyperspace, derived by requiring the OSp(1|2n) invariance of the correlators, to correlation functions on the OSp(1|n) group manifold. As a byproduct, for the simplest particular case of a conventional N=1, D=3 superconformal theory of scalar superfields, we also derive correlation functions of component fields of the scalar supermultiplet including those of auxiliary fields.

Higher Spins in Hyperspace

We consider the Sp(2n) invariant formulation of higher spin fields on flat and curved backgrounds of constant curvature. In this formulation an infinite number of higher spin fields are packed into single scalar and spinor master fields (hyperfields) propagating on extended spaces, to be called hyperspaces, parametrized by tensorial coordinates. We show that the free field equations on flat and AdS-like hyperspaces are related to each other by a generalized conformal transformation of the scalar and spinor master fields. We compute the four--point functions on a flat hyperspace for both scalar and spinor master fields, thus extending the two-- and three--point function results of arXiv:hep-th/0312244. Then using the generalized conformal transformation we derive two--, three-- and four--point functions on AdS--like hyperspace from the corresponding correlators on the flat hyperspace.

N=2 string amplitudes and the Omega background

We review recent work [1, 2] on obtaining a realisation of the $Ω$-background in terms of a special series of higher-derivative generalised F-terms in the effective $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity action. We discuss the motivation behind the identification of these couplings, their relation to the Nekrasov partition function and connect them to a worldsheet approach towards the refined topological string. Gauged supergravities and non-geometric Q/R-fluxes from asymmetric orbifold CFT's

We investigate the orbifold limits of string theory compactifications with geometric and non-geometric fluxes. Exploiting the connection between internal fluxes and structure constants of the gaugings in the reduced supergravity theory, we can identify the types of fluxes arising in certain classes of freely-acting symmetric and asymmetric orbifolds. We give a general procedure for deriving the gauge algebra of the effective gauged supergravity using the exact CFT description at the orbifold point. We find that the asymmetry is, in general, related to the presence of non-geometric Q- and R- fluxes. The action of T-duality is studied explicitly on various orbifold models and the resulting transformation of the fluxes is derived. Several explicit examples are provided, including compactifications with geometric fluxes, Q-backgrounds (T-folds) and R-backgrounds. In particular, we present an asymmetric Z4xZ2 orbifold in which all geometric and non-geometric fluxes ω, H, Q, R are turned on simultaneously. We also derive the corresponding flux backgrounds, which are not in general T-dual to geometric ones, and may even simultaneously depend non-trivially on both the coordinates and their winding T-duals.

Non-Perturbative Nekrasov Partition Function from String Theory

We calculate gauge instanton corrections to a class of higher derivative string effective couplings introduced in [1]. We work in Type I string theory compactified on K3xT2 and realise gauge instantons in terms of D5-branes wrapping the internal space. In the field theory limit we reproduce the deformed ADHM action on a general Ω-background from which one can compute the non-perturbative gauge theory partition function using localisation. This is a non-perturbative extension of [1] and provides further evidence for our proposal of a string theory realisation of the Ω-background.

One-loop Amplitudes as BPS state sums

We review a novel method for evaluating one-loop BPS-saturated amplitudes in string theory. Contrary to traditional techniques of unfolding the fundamental domain F against the Narain lattice, which are only valid in certain regions of the moduli space and which obscure the T- duality invariance of the result, we will describe how the elliptic genus can be represented as a linear combination of certain absolutely convergent Poincaré series, against which F can be unfolded. The result can be expressed as a sum of one-loop contributions of perturbative BPS-states in a manifestly T-duality invariant fashion, valid at any point of (the perturbative) moduli space. Within this framework, the singularity structure of amplitudes around points of gauge symmetry enhancement becomes crystal clear and a series of applications is given in order to better illustrate the power of this approach.

Rankin-Selberg methods for closed strings on orbifolds

In recent work we have developed a new unfolding method for computing one-loop modular integrals in string theory involving the Narain partition function and, possibly, a weak almost holomorphic elliptic genus. Unlike the traditional approach, the Narain lattice does not play any role in the unfolding procedure, T-duality is kept manifest at all steps, a choice of Weyl chamber is not required and the analytic structure of the amplitude is transparent. In the present paper, we generalise this procedure to the case of Abelian Z_N orbifolds, where the integrand decomposes into a sum of orbifold blocks that can be organised into orbits of the Hecke congruence subgroup Γ_0(N). As a result, the original modular integral reduces to an integral over the fundamental domain of Γ_0(N), which we then evaluate by extending our previous techniques. Our method is applicable, for instance, to the evaluation of one-loop corrections to BPS-saturated couplings in the low energy effective action of closed string models, of quantum corrections to the Kähler metric and, in principle, of the free-energy of superstring vacua.

Asymmetric Orbifolds, Non-Geometric Fluxes and Non-Commutativity in Closed String Theory

In this paper we consider a class of exactly solvable closed string flux backgrounds that exhibit non-commutativity in the closed string coordinates. They are realized in terms of freely-acting asymmetric Z_N-orbifolds, which are themselves close relatives of twisted torus fibrations with elliptic Z_N-monodromy (elliptic T-folds). We explicitly construct the modular invariant partition function of the models and derive the non-commutative algebra in the string coordinates, which is exact to all orders in α'. Finally, we relate these asymmetric orbifold spaces to inherently stringy Scherk-Schwarz backgrounds and non-geometric fluxes.

A new look at one-loop integrals in string theory

We revisit the evaluation of one-loop modular integrals in string theory, employing new methods that, unlike the traditional 'orbit method', keep T-duality manifest throughout. In particular, we apply the Rankin-Selberg-Zagier approach to cases where the integrand function grows at most polynomially in the IR. Furthermore, we introduce new techniques in the case where `unphysical tachyons' contribute to the one-loop couplings. These methods can be viewed as a modular invariant version of dimensional regularisation. As an example, we treat one-loop BPS-saturated couplings involving the $d$-dimensional Narain lattice and the invariant Klein $j$-function, and relate them to (shifted) constrained Epstein Zeta series of O(d,d;Z). In particular, we recover the well-known results for d=2 in a few easy steps.

Conformal Aspects of Spinor-Vector Duality

We present a detailed study of various aspects of Spinor-Vector duality in Heterotic string compactifications and expose its origin in terms of the internal conformal field theory. In particular, we illustrate the main features of the duality map by using simple toroidal orbifolds preserving N_4 = 1 and N_4 = 2 spacetime supersymmetries in four dimensions. We explain how the duality map arises in this context by turning on special values of the Wilson lines around the compact cycles of the manifold. We argue that in models with N_4 = 2 spacetime supersymmetry, the interpolation between the Spinor-Vector dual vacua can be continuously realized. We trace the origin of the Spinor-Vector duality map to the presence of underlying N = (2, 2) and N = (4, 4) SCFTs, and explicitly show that the induced spectral-flow in the twisted sectors is responsible for the observed duality. The isomorphism between current algebra representations gives rise to a number of chiral character identities, reminiscent of the recently-discovered MSDS symmetry.

Marginal Deformations of Vacua with Massive boson-fermion Degeneracy Symmetry

Two-dimensional string vacua with Massive Spectrum boson-fermion Degeneracy Symmetry (MSDS) are explicitly constructed in Type II and Heterotic superstring theories. The study of their moduli space indicates the existence of large marginal deformations that connect continuously the initial d=2, MSDS vacua to higher-dimensional conventional superstring vacua, where spacetime supersymmetry is spontaneously broken by geometrical fluxes. We find that the maximally symmetric, d=2, Type II MSDS-vacuum, is in correspondence with the maximal, N=8, d=4, gauged supergravity, where the supergravity gauging is induced by the fluxes. This correspondence is extended to less symmetric cases where the initial MSDS symmetry is reduced by orbifolds. We also exhibit and analyse thermal interpretations of some Euclidean versions of the models and identify classes of MSDS vacua that remain tachyon-free under arbitrary marginal deformations about the extended symmetry point. The connection between the two-dimensional MSDS vacua and the resulting four-dimensional effective supergravity theories arises naturally within the context of an adiabatic cosmological evolution, where the very early Universe is conjectured to be described by an MSDS-vacuum, while at late cosmological times it is described by an effective N=1 supergravity theory with spontaneously broken supersymmetry.

Non-singular string cosmology in a 2d Hybrid model

The existence of non-singular string cosmologies is established in a class of two-dimensional supersymmetric Hybrid models at finite temperature. The left-moving sector of the Hybrid models gives rise to 16 real (N_4=4) spacetime supercharges as in the usual superstring models. The right-moving sector is non-supersymmetric at the massless level, but is characterized by MSDS symmetry, which ensures boson/fermion degeneracy of the right-moving massive levels. Finite temperature configurations, which are free of Hagedorn instabilities, are constructed in the presence of non-trivial "gravito-magnetic" fluxes. These fluxes inject non-trivial winding charge into the thermal vacuum and restore the thermal T-duality symmetry associated with the Euclidean time circle. Thanks to the unbroken right-moving MSDS symmetry, the one-loop string partition function is exactly calculable beyond any alpha'-approximation. At the self-dual point new massless thermal states appear, sourcing localized spacelike branes, which can be used to connect a contracting thermal Universe to an expanding one. The resulting bouncing cosmology is free of any curvature singularities and the string coupling remains perturbative throughout the cosmological evolution.

String Vacua with Massive boson-fermion Degeneracy & Non-Singular Cosmology

We discuss marginal deformations of string vacua with Massive boson-fermion Degeneracy Symmetry (MSDS), in connection to the cosmological evolution of the Universe from an early non-geometrical era. In particular, we discuss recent results on the stringy mechanism that resolves both Hagedorn divergences and the Initial Singularity problem.
