Refined Topological Amplitudes from the $Ω$-Background in String Theory

It was recently shown that the $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 string topological amplitudes in the heterotic weak coupling limit generate a six-dimensional Melvin space, providing a description of the $Ω$-background in string theory, where string propagation can be exactly studied. In this work, we generalise the analysis to the refined case of the $Ω$-background with two independent deformation parameters. The Melvin space is now ten-dimensional and is extended by an action on the internal K3 compactification manifold of the heterotic superstring, corresponding to an ${\rm SU(2)}_R$ rotation in the field theory description. We identify the class of heterotic topological amplitudes realising this background as the scattering of two anti-self-dual gravitons and arbitrary numbers of anti-self-dual graviphotons, self-dual vector fields of the dilaton multiplet, together with self-dual magnetic fluxes along the K3. In the field theory limit, our result correctly reproduces the perturbative part of the Nekrasov free energy in the case where both equivariant parameters are turned on.

Heterotic-Type I Dual Pairs, Rigid Branes and Broken Susy

The moduli space of toroidal type I vacua, which are consistent at the non-perturbative level, consists of independent branches characterized by the number (0, 16 or 32) of rigid branes sitting on top of orientifold planes. This structure persists also when supersymmetry is spontaneously broken a la Scherk-Schwarz. We show that all the components of the moduli space in dimension $D\ge 5$ indeed admit heterotic dual components, by explicitly constructing heterotic-type I dual pairs with the rank of the gauge group reduced by 0, 8 or 16 units. In the presence of spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry, the dual pairs we consider are also free of tachyonic instabilities at the one-loop level, provided the scale of supersymmetry breaking is lower than the string scale.

The String Geometry Behind Topological Amplitudes

It is shown that the generating function of $\mathscr{N}=2$ topological strings, in the heterotic weak coupling limit, is identified with the partition function of a six-dimensional Melvin background. This background, which corresponds to an exact CFT, realises in string theory the six-dimensional $\varOmega$-background of Nekrasov, in the case of opposite deformation parameters $ε_1=-ε_2$, thus providing the known perturbative part of the Nekrasov partition function in the field theory limit. The analysis is performed on both heterotic and type I strings and for the cases of ordinary $\mathscr{N}=2$ and $\mathscr{N}=2^*$ theories.

One-Loop BPS amplitudes as BPS-state sums

Recently, we introduced a new procedure for computing a class of one-loop BPS-saturated amplitudes in String Theory, which expresses them as a sum of one-loop contributions of all perturbative BPS states in a manifestly T-duality invariant fashion. In this paper, we extend this procedure to all BPS-saturated amplitudes of the form \int_F Γ_{d+k,d} Φ, with Φ being a weak (almost) holomorphic modular form of weight -k/2. We use the fact that any such Φ can be expressed as a linear combination of certain absolutely convergent Poincaré series, against which the fundamental domain F can be unfolded. The resulting BPS-state sum neatly exhibits the singularities of the amplitude at points of gauge symmetry enhancement, in a chamber-independent fashion. We illustrate our method with concrete examples of interest in heterotic string compactifications.

Generalised universality of gauge thresholds in heterotic vacua with and without supersymmetry

We study one-loop quantum corrections to gauge couplings in heterotic vacua with spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. Although in non-supersymmetric constructions these corrections are not protected and are typically model dependent, we show how a universal behaviour of threshold differences, typical of supersymmetric vacua, may still persist. We formulate specific conditions on the way supersymmetry should be broken for this to occur. Our analysis implies a generalised notion of threshold universality even in the case of unbroken supersymmetry, whenever extra charged massless states appear at enhancement points in the bulk of moduli space. Several examples with universality, including non-supersymmetric chiral models in four dimensions, are presented.

Universality of Gauge Thresholds in Non-Supersymmetric Heterotic Vacua

We compute one-loop threshold corrections to non-abelian gauge couplings in four-dimensional heterotic vacua with spontaneously broken $\cal N = 2 \to \cal N = 0$ supersymmetry, obtained as Scherk-Schwarz reductions of six-dimensional K3 compactifications. As expected, the gauge thresholds are no-longer BPS protected, and receive contributions also from the excitations of the RNS sector. Remarkably, the difference of thresholds for non-abelian gauge couplings is BPS saturated and exhibits a universal behaviour independently of the orbifold realisation of K3. Moreover, the thresholds and their difference develop infra-red logarithmic singularities whenever charged BPS-like states, originating from the twisted RNS sector, become massless at special loci in the classical moduli space.

Rankin-Selberg methods for closed strings on orbifolds

In recent work we have developed a new unfolding method for computing one-loop modular integrals in string theory involving the Narain partition function and, possibly, a weak almost holomorphic elliptic genus. Unlike the traditional approach, the Narain lattice does not play any role in the unfolding procedure, T-duality is kept manifest at all steps, a choice of Weyl chamber is not required and the analytic structure of the amplitude is transparent. In the present paper, we generalise this procedure to the case of Abelian Z_N orbifolds, where the integrand decomposes into a sum of orbifold blocks that can be organised into orbits of the Hecke congruence subgroup Γ_0(N). As a result, the original modular integral reduces to an integral over the fundamental domain of Γ_0(N), which we then evaluate by extending our previous techniques. Our method is applicable, for instance, to the evaluation of one-loop corrections to BPS-saturated couplings in the low energy effective action of closed string models, of quantum corrections to the Kähler metric and, in principle, of the free-energy of superstring vacua.

A new look at one-loop integrals in string theory

We revisit the evaluation of one-loop modular integrals in string theory, employing new methods that, unlike the traditional 'orbit method', keep T-duality manifest throughout. In particular, we apply the Rankin-Selberg-Zagier approach to cases where the integrand function grows at most polynomially in the IR. Furthermore, we introduce new techniques in the case where `unphysical tachyons' contribute to the one-loop couplings. These methods can be viewed as a modular invariant version of dimensional regularisation. As an example, we treat one-loop BPS-saturated couplings involving the $d$-dimensional Narain lattice and the invariant Klein $j$-function, and relate them to (shifted) constrained Epstein Zeta series of O(d,d;Z). In particular, we recover the well-known results for d=2 in a few easy steps.

Non-perturbative transitions among intersecting-brane vacua

We investigate the transmutation of D-branes into Abelian magnetic backgrounds on the world-volume of higher-dimensional branes, within the framework of global models with compact internal dimensions. The phenomenon, T-dual to brane recombination in the intersecting-brane picture, shares some similarities to inverse small-instanton transitions in non-compact spaces, though in this case the Abelian magnetic background is a consequence of the compactness of the internal manifold, and is not ascribed to a zero-size non-Abelian instanton growing to maximal size. We provide details of the transition in various supersymmetric orientifolds and non-supersymmetric tachyon-free vacua with Brane Supersymmetry Breaking, both from brane recombination and from a field theory Higgs mechanism viewpoints.

Vacuum stability, string density of states and the Riemann zeta function

We study the distribution of graded degrees of freedom in classically stable oriented closed string vacua and use the Rankin-Selberg transform to link it to the finite one-loop vacuum energy. In particular, we find that the spectrum of physical excitations not only must enjoy asymptotic supersymmetry but actually, at very large mass, bosonic and fermionic states must follow a universal oscillating pattern, whose frequencies are related to the zeros of the Riemann zeta-function. Moreover, the convergence rate of the overall number of the graded degrees of freedom to the value of the vacuum energy is determined by the Riemann hypothesis. We discuss also attempts to obtain constraints in the case of tachyon-free open-string theories.

Suppressing the Cosmological Constant in Non-Supersymmetric Type I Strings

We construct non-supersymmetric type I string models which correspond to consistent flat-space solutions of all classical equations of motion. Moreover, the one-loop vacuum energy is naturally fixed by the size of compact extra dimensions which, in the two-dimensional case, can be lowered to a fraction of a millimetre. This class of models has interesting non-abelian gauge groups and can accommodate chiral fermions. In the large radius limit, supersymmetry is recovered in the bulk, while D-brane excitations, although non-supersymmetric, exhibit Fermi-Bose degeneracy at all mass levels. We also give some evidence for a suppression of higher-loop corrections to the vacuum energy.

Unusual gauged supergravities from type IIA and type IIB orientifolds

We analyse different N=4 supergravities coupled to six vector multiplets corresponding to low-energy descriptions of the bulk sector of T6/Z2 orientifolds with p-brane in IIB (p odd) and in IIA (p even) superstrings. When fluxes are turned on, a gauging emerges corresponding to some non-semisimple Lie algebra related to nilpotent algebras N_p inside so(6,6), with dimension 15 + (p-3)(9-p). The non-metric axions have Stueckelberg couplings that induce a spontaneous breaking of gauge symmetries. In four cases the gauge algebra is non-abelian with a non-commutative structure of the compactification torus, due to fluxes of NS-NS and R-R forms.

Open Strings

This review is devoted to open strings, and in particular to the often surprising features of their spectra. It follows and summarizes developments that took place mainly at the University of Rome ``Tor Vergata'' over the last decade, and centred on world-sheet aspects of the constructions now commonly referred to as ``orientifolds''. Our presentation aims to bridge the gap between the world-sheet analysis, that first exhibited many of the novel features of these systems, and their geometric description in terms of extended objects, D-branes and O-planes, contributed by many other colleagues, and most notably by J. Polchinski. We therefore proceed through a number of prototype examples, starting from the bosonic string and moving on to ten-dimensional fermionic strings and their toroidal and orbifold compactifications, in an attempt to guide the reader in a self-contained journey to the more recent developments related to the breaking of supersymmetry.

Asymmetric Orientifolds, Brane Supersymmetry Breaking and Non-BPS Branes

A new class of six-dimensional asymmetric orientifolds is considered where the orientifold operation is combined with T-duality. The models are supersymmetric in the bulk, but the cancellation of the tadpoles requires the introduction of brane configurations that break supersymmetry. These can be described by D7-brane anti-brane pairs, non-BPS D8-branes or D9-brane anti-brane pairs. The transition between these different configurations and their stability is analysed in detail.

Comments on Open-String Orbifolds with a Non-Vanishing B_{ab}

We study the effect of a non-vanishing flux for the NS-NS antisymmetric tensor in open-string orbifolds. As in toroidal models, the total dimension of the Chan-Paton gauge group is reduced proportionally to the rank of $B_{ab}$, both on D9 and on D5-branes, while the Moebius amplitude involves some signs that, in the $Z_2$ case, allow one to connect continuously ${\rm U} (n)$ groups to $Sp(n) \otimes Sp(n)$ groups on each set of D-branes. In this case, non-universal couplings between twisted scalars and gauge vectors arise, as demanded by the generalised Green-Schwarz mechanism. We also comment on the role of the NS-NS antisymmetric tensor in a recently proposed type scenario, where supersymmetry is broken on the D-branes, while it is preserved in the bulk.

Aspects of Type I Compactifications and Type I-Heterotic Duality

We review the construction of open descendants of the type IIB superstring on the Z-orbifold. It results in a chiral four-dimensional model with gauge group $SO(8) \otimes U(12)$ and three generations of matter in the $(8,12^*)\oplus (1,66)$ representations. As a test of type I - heterotic duality, that reduces to a weak/weak duality in D=4, a heterotic model on the same orbifold is also presented. The massless spectrum reproduces exactly the one found in the type I case apart from additional twisted matter charged with respect to the SO(8) gauge group. The puzzle is solved by noting that at generic points in the moduli space these states get masses.

String Cosmology and Inflation

Following a suggestion by Gasperini and Veneziano, that String Cosmology can be reconciled with Inflation and, hence, with the Standard Big Bang, we display an analytical solution which possesses four interesting properties: (1) it is non-singular; (2) it distinguishes the dynamics of the external scale factor, $a(t)$, from that of the internal one, $b(t)$; (3) it exhibits a non-monotonic behavior of $a(t)$; and (4) it stabilizes both Newton's constant and $b(t)$ (the latter to a finite, non-vanishing value). The interest of the non-monotonic evolution of $a(t)$ consists in the fact that it contains three phases of accelerated expansion, contraction and expansion before the final decelerated expansion which eventually becomes the Standard Big Bang. The total number of e-folds of the three accelerated eras can be calculated and tuned to fit the requests of observational astronomy.
