Cooperation, competition and emergence of hierarchy: reconfigurable assembly of active colloids under combined electric and magnetic fields

Field induced assembly of reconfigurable structures with complex hierarchical configurations has recently become an area of intense research with the promise for exciting applications in programmable self-assembly and nano/microstructure fabrication. While a wide variety of structures, from crystals to glasses, to chains and oligomers have been produced by activating colloidal particles with electric and magnetic fields, a combined approach utilizing the capabilities of multiple field types offers a richer parameter space, enabling precise structural control and a higher degree of reconfigurability. Here we demonstrate the assembly of complex hierarchical colloidal superstructures using an electric field (AC) and magnetic field (DC) combination. In our chosen frequency regime, dipolar (magnetic and electric) and electrohydrodynamic interactions are comparable, leading to a rich phase space with a wide number of configurations which are tunable by relatively small changes of the field parameters. This is in contrast to the existing small number of studies on multi-field induced assembly that work in size and frequency regimes where the dominant mechanism is dipolar interaction induced assembly. We show that depending upon the direction and frequency of the applied fields, there can be three possibilities in structure formation: a) a cooperation among the fields b) a competition among the fields and c) hierarchical reorganization in which micrometer-sized particles form chains that are part of larger clusters or 'domains' spanning tens of micrometers. This versatile, easy to set up and fully reconfigurable approach of multi-field induced structure formation opens up new opportunities for bottom-up fabrication of smart materials, switchable photonic crystals, and modular microswimmers for targeted drug delivery and environmental remediation.

Flavour-alignment in an $S_3$-symmetric Higgs sector and its RG-behaviour

A three Higgs-doublet model admitting an $S_3$-symmetry can predict the observed pattern of the quark masses and their mixings. However the same symmetry also introduces potential flavour-changing neutral currents at the tree level. We assume in this work that the scalar potential contains appropriate \emph{soft} $S_3$-breaking terms in order to keep the choices of the scalar masses flexible. We identify the parameters in the Yukawa Lagrangian in the quark sector responsible for such FCNCs and constrain them using data from some of the flavour physics observables like meson-decays and meson-mixings. We also validate the corresponding model parameter space with renormalisation group (RG) evaluation.

Muon $g-2$ and $W$-mass in a framework of colored scalars: an LHC perspective

A color octet isodoublet can have esoteric origins and it complies with minimal flavour violation. In this study, we take a scenario where the well known Type-X Two-Higgs doublet model is augmented with a color octet isodoublet. We shed light on how such a setup can predict the recently observed value for the $W$-boson mass. We also evaluate the two-loop Barr-Zee contributions to muon $g-2$ stemming from the colored scalars. The parameter space compatible with the observed muon $g-2$ gets relaxed w.r.t. what it is in the pure Type-X 2HDM by virtue of the contribution from the colored scalars. The extended parameter region therefore successfully accounts for both the $W$-mass and muon $g-2$ anomalies successfully. Finally, a collider signature leading to $τ^+ τ^- b \bar{b}$ final state is explored at the 14 TeV LHC using both cut-based and multivariate techniques. Such a signal can confirm the existence of both colorless as well colored scalars that are introduced by this framework.

Resonant leptogenesis in (2,2) inverse see-saw realisation

In this present work, we uphold the standard model (SM) augmented with two right-handed (RH) neutrinos along with two singlet neutral fermions to generate active neutrino masses via (2,2) inverse see-saw mechanism. All entries of the neutrino mass matrix are taken to be complex to make this study a general one. We also investigate if the parameter points compatible with the neutrino oscillation data simultaneously satisfy the experimental bounds coming from the lepton flavour violating (LFV) decays : $μ\to e γ,~ τ\to e γ, ~ τ\to μγ$. This study also explores the prospect of producing the baryon asymmetry of the universe through resonant leptogenesis. Here the resonant leptogenesis is induced by the lightest pair of degenerate mass eigenstates. Upon solving the coupled Boltzmann equations, one can divide the multi-dimensional model parameter space into three parts, where the parameter points are compatible with the neutrino oscillation data, constraints coming from the LFV decays and last but not the least, the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe.

Signals for vector-like leptons in an $S_3$-symmetric 2HDM at ILC

In this work, we explore the signals of an $S_3$-symmetric two Higgs doublet model with two generations of vector-like leptons (VLLs) at the proposed International Linear Collider (ILC). The lightest neutral component of the VLL in this model provides a viable dark matter (DM) candidate satisfying the current relic density data as well as circumventing all direct and indirect DM search constraints. Some representative benchmark points have been selected with low, medium and high DM masses, satisfying all theoretical and experimental constraints of the model and constraints coming from the DM sector. The VLLs (both neutral and charged) will be produced in pair leading to multi-lepton and multi-jet final states. We show that the ILC will prove to be a much more efficient and useful machine to hunt for such signals compared to LHC. Using traditional cut-based analysis as well as sophisticated multivariate analysis, we perform a detailed analysis of some promising channels containing mono-lepton plus di-jet, di-lepton, four-lepton and four jets along with missing transverse energy in the final state at 1 TeV ILC.

Electroweakino searches at the HL-LHC in the baryon number violating MSSM

The projected reach of direct electroweakino searches at the HL-LHC ($\sqrt{s}=14~{\rm TeV}, ~3000~{\rm fb^{-1}}$ LHC) in the framework of simplified models with R-parity violating (RPV) operators: $λ_{112}^{\prime \prime}u^{c}d^{c}s^{c}$ and $λ_{113}^{\prime\prime}u^{c}d^{c}b^{c}$, is studied. Four different analysis channels are chosen: $Wh$ mediated $1l+2b+jets+\rm E{\!\!\!/}_T$, $Wh$ mediated $1l+2γ+jets+\rm E{\!\!\!/}_T$, $WZ$ mediated $3l+jets+\rm E{\!\!\!/}_T$ and $WZ$ mediated $3l+2b+jets+\rm E{\!\!\!/}_T$ and the projected exclusion/discovery reach of direct wino searches in these channels is analyzed by performing a detailed cut based collider analysis. The projected exclusion contour reaches up to $600-700~{\rm GeV}$ for a massless bino-like $χ_{1}^{0}$ from searches in the $Wh$ mediated $1l+2b+jets+\rm E{\!\!\!/}_T$, $Wh$ mediated $1l+2γ+jets+\rm E{\!\!\!/}_T$ and $WZ$ mediated $3l+jets+\rm E{\!\!\!/}_T$ channels, while the $WZ$ mediated $3l+2b+jets+\rm E{\!\!\!/}_T$ search channel is found to have a projected exclusion reach up to $600~{\rm GeV}$ for $150~{\rm GeV} < M_{χ_{1}^{0}} < 250~{\rm GeV}$. The baryon number violating simplified scenario considered in this work is found to furnish a weaker projected reach (typically by a factor of $\sim 1/2$) than the R-parity conserving (RPC) case. The projected reach at the HL-LHC in these four channels is also recast for realistic benchmark scenarios.

Two Coupled Mechanisms Produce Fickian, yet non-Gaussian Diffusion in Heterogeneous Media

Fickian yet non-Gaussian diffusion is observed in several biological and soft matter systems, yet the underlying mechanisms behind the emergence of non-Gaussianity while retaining a linear mean square displacement remain speculative. Here, we characterize quantitatively the effect of spatial heterogeneities on the appearance of non-Gaussianity in Fickian diffusion. We study the diffusion of fluorescent colloidal particles in a matrix of micropillars having a range of structural configurations: from completely ordered to completely random. We show that non-Gaussianity emerges as a direct consequence of two coupled factors; individual particle diffusivities become spatially dependent in a heterogeneous randomly structured environment, and the spatial distribution of the particles varies significantly in such environments, further influencing the diffusivity of a single particle. The coupled mechanisms lead to a considerable non-Gaussian nature even due to weak disorder in the arrangement of the micropillars. A simple mathematical model validates our hypothesis that non-Gaussian yet Fickian diffusion in our system arises from the superstatistical behavior of the ensemble in a structurally heterogeneous environment. The two mechanisms identified here are relevant for many systems of crowded heterogeneous environments where non-Gaussian diffusion is frequently observed, for example in biological systems, polymers, gels and porous materials.

Type-I thermal leptogenesis in $Z_3$-symmetric three Higgs doublet model

Our present work explores the possibility of neutrino mass generation through {\em Type-I see-saw} mechanism and provides an explanation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe via thermal leptogenesis in the framework of $Z_3$-symmetric three Higgs doublet model (3HDM) augmented with three right-handed neutrinos. Here the thermal leptogenesis is initiated by the out-of-equilibrium decay of the lightest heavy neutrino $N_1$. The constraints arising out of the scalar sector put strong bound on the model parameter $\tan β$, which in turn takes part in the computation of the lepton asymmetry $ε$. Lepton asymmetry being converted partially into the baryon asymmetry by electroweak sphelaron processes, will account for the required baryon asymmetry satisfying the current data. We therefore analyse the parameter space consistent with the constraints arising from neutrino oscillation, lepton asymmetry and baryon asymmetry together, last one being the most stringent one.

Colloidal Joints with Designed Motion Range and Tunable Joint Flexibility

The miniaturization of machines towards the micron and nanoscales requires the development of joint-like elements that enable and constrain motion. We present a facile method to create colloidal joints, that is, anisotropic colloidal particles containing surface mobile DNA linkers that control the motion range of bonded particles. We demonstrate quantitatively that we can control the flexibility of these colloidal joints by tuning the DNA linker concentration in the bond area. We show that the colloidal shape controls the range of motion that these colloidal joints enable, due to the finite-sized patch of bonded linkers that cannot cross regions of high curvature. Finally we demonstrate the potential of the colloidal joints for programmable bottom-up self-assembly by creating flexible colloidal molecules and colloidal polymers. The reconfigurability and motion constraint offered by our colloidal joints make them promising building blocks for the development of switchable materials and nanorobots.

Diphoton excess at 750 GeV: Singlet scalars confront triviality

We suggest that the recently observed diphoton excess at 750 GeV comes from a quasi-degenerate bunch of gauge singlet scalars produced and decaying through one or more vector-like fermions. This explains the broad nature of the resonance, even though the decay is loop-mediated. At the same time, the model keeps the new Yukawa couplings in the perturbative region, which is necessary for the stability of the potential.

Lepton flavor violating Higgs boson decay $h\toμτ$ at the ILC

We study the possible reach of the proposed International Linear Collider (ILC) in exploring the lepton flavor violating (LFV) Higgs boson decay $h\toμτ$. Two generic types of models are investigated, both involving an extended scalar sector. For the first type, the rest of the scalars are heavy and beyond the reach of ILC but the LFV decay occurs through a tiny admixture of the Standard Model (SM) doublet with the heavy degrees of freedom. In the second class, which is more constrained from the existing data, the SM Higgs boson does not have any LFV decay but there are other scalars degenerate with it that gives rise to the LFV signal. We show that ILC can pin down the branching fraction of $h\toμτ$, and hence the effective LFV Yukawa coupling, to a very small value, due to the fact that there are signal channels with unlike flavor leptons but no missing energy. It turns out that the low-energy options of the ILC, namely, $\sqrt{s}=250$ or 500 GeV are better to investigate such channels, and the option of beam polarization helps too. At least an order of magnitude improvement is envisaged over the existing limits.

On the scalar potential of two-Higgs doublet models

We perform a detailed analysis of the Two-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) potential. At the tree-level, the potential may accommodate more than one minima, one of them being the electroweak (EW) minimum where the universe lives. The parameter space allowed after the data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) came in almost excludes those cases where the EW vacuum is shallower than the second minimum. We extend the analysis by including terms in the 2HDM potential that break the $Z_2$ symmetry of the potential by dimension-4 operators and show that the conclusions remain unchanged. Furthermore, a one-loop analysis of the potential is performed for both cases, namely, where the $Z_2$ symmetry of the potential is broken by dimension-2 or dimension-4 operators. For quantitative analysis, we show our results for the Type-II 2HDM, qualitative results remaining the same for other 2HDMs. We find that the nature of the vacua from the tree-level analysis does not change; the EW vacuum still remains deeper.

Triplet-extended scalar sector and the naturalness problem

We consider the extension of the Standard Model by a complex scalar triplet field, which occurs naturally in several models of leptogenesis and see-saw mechanism for neutrino mass generation, in the context of ameliorating the fine-tuning problem of the fundamental scalars through the Veltman Condition, i.e. by demanding the sum of the quadratically divergent corrections to vanish (or be at a reasonable level) by virtue of some possible symmetry of the underlying theory. We show that it is possible to cancel all the scalar one-loop quadratic divergences and hence obtain a viable solution for the fine-tuning problem, while satisfying the electroweak precision observables, including the $ρ$ parameter, and successfully generating the neutrino masses. The stability of the scalar potential puts important constraints on the model.

Two-Higgs doublet models confront the naturalness problem

The conjecture that some unknown symmetry is responsible for keeping the Higgs boson light at 125 GeV does not hold for the Standard Model, where the coefficient of the quadratic divergence of Higgs boson self-energy is far from zero. We show that such a cancellation can be achieved in two-Higgs doublet models, by virtue of which all the scalars remain at the electroweak scale and the naturalness problem is avoided. We explore the consequences of such cancellations in different two-Higgs doublet models with no flavour-changing neutral current, and show that the parameter space becomes tightly constrained; in particular, the ratio of two vacuum expectation values, $\tanβ$, no longer remains a free parameter but turns out to be a function of the quartic couplings.
