Entanglement of edge modes in (very) strongly correlated topological insulators

Identifying topological phases for a strongly correlated theory remains a non-trivial task, as defining order parameters, such as Berry phases, is not straightforward. Quantum information theory is capable of identifying topological phases for a theory that exhibits quantum phase transition with a suitable definition of order parameters that are related to different entanglement measures for the system. In this work, we study entanglement entropy for a bi-layer SSH model, both in the presence and absence of Hubbard interaction and at varying interaction strengths. For the free theory, edge entanglement acts as an order parameter, which is supported by analytic calculations and numerical (DMRG) studies. We calculate the symmetry-resolved entanglement and demonstrate the equipartition of entanglement for this model which itself acts as an order parameter when calculated for the edge modes. As the DMRG calculation allows one to go beyond the free theory, we study the entanglement structure of the edge modes in the presence of on-site Hubbard interaction for the same model. A sudden reduction of edge entanglement is obtained as interaction is switched on. The explanation for this lies in the change in the size of the degenerate subspaces in the presence and absence of interaction. We also study the signature of entanglement when the interaction strength becomes extremely strong and demonstrate that the edge entanglement remains protected. In this limit, the energy eigenstates essentially become a tensor product state, implying zero entanglement. However, a remnant entropy survives in the non-trivial topological phase which is exactly due to the entanglement of the edge modes.

Loop, String, and Hadron Dynamics in SU(2) Hamiltonian Lattice Gauge Theories

The question of how to efficiently formulate Hamiltonian gauge theories is experiencing renewed interest due to advances in building quantum simulation platforms. We introduce a reformulation of an SU(2) Hamiltonian lattice gauge theory---a loop-string-hadron (LSH) formulation---that describes dynamics directly in terms of its loop, string, and hadron degrees of freedom, while alleviating several disadvantages of quantumly simulating the Kogut-Susskind formulation. This LSH formulation transcends the local loop formulation of $d+1$-dimensional lattice gauge theories by incorporating staggered quarks, furnishing the algebra of gauge-singlet operators, and being used to reconstruct dynamics between states that have Gauss's law built in to them. LSH operators are then factored into products of "normalized" ladder operators and diagonal matrices, priming them for classical or quantum information processing. Self-contained expressions of the Hamiltonian are given up to $d=3$. The LSH formalism makes little use of structures specific to SU(2) and its conceptual clarity makes it an attractive approach to apply to other non-Abelian groups like SU(3).

Solving Gauss's Law on Digital Quantum Computers with Loop-String-Hadron Digitization

We show that using the loop-string-hadron (LSH) formulation of SU(2) lattice gauge theory (arXiv:1912.06133) as a basis for digital quantum computation easily solves an important problem of fundamental interest: implementing gauge invariance (or Gauss's law) exactly. We first discuss the structure of the LSH Hilbert space in $d$ spatial dimensions, its truncation, and its digitization with qubits. Error detection and mitigation in gauge theory simulations would benefit from physicality "oracles,'"so we decompose circuits that flag gauge invariant wavefunctions. We then analyze the logical qubit costs and entangling gate counts involved with the protocols. The LSH basis could save or cost more qubits than a Kogut-Susskind-type representation basis, depending on how the bases are digitized as well as the spatial dimension. The numerous other clear benefits encourage future studies into applying this framework.

Exact Simulation of Loops in Lattice Gauge Theory

We exploit the local loop dynamics calculated in prepotential formulation to compute the pertrubation expansion in the strong coupling limit of lattice gauge theory. A new exact simulation technique is developed to simulate all possible loop states on an infinite lattice using exact BFACF algorithm. This loop perturbation numerical calculations are free from any limitation on lattice size. Using this, we calculate the correction of string tension for SU(2) theory in 2+1 dimension upto order $g^{64}$.

Prepotential Formulation of Lattice Gauge Theory

Within the Hamiltonian formulation of Lattice gauge theories, prepotentials, belonging to the fundamental representation of the gauge group and defined locally at each site of the lattice, enables us to construct local loop operators and loop states. We propose a set of diagrammatic rules for the action of local gauge invariant operators on arbitrary loop states. Moreover We propose a new set of fusion variables within the prepotential aproach suitable for approaching the weak coupling limit.

SU(2) Lattice Gauge Theory- Local Dynamics on Non-intersecting Electric flux Loops

We use Schwinger Bosons as prepotentials for lattice gauge theory to define local linking oper- ators and calculate their action on linking states for 2 + 1 dimensional SU(2) lattice gauge theory. We develop a diagrammatic technique and associate a set of (lattice Feynman) rules to compute the entire loop dynamics diagrammatically. The physical loop space is shown to contain only non- intersecting loop configurations after solving the Mandelstam constraint. The smallest plaquette loops are contained in the physical loop space and other configurations are generated by the action of a set of fusion operators on this basic loop states enabling one to charaterize any arbitrary loop by the basic plaquette together with the fusion variables. Consequently, the full Kogut-Susskind Hamiltonian and the dynamics of all possible non-intersecting physical loops are formulated in terms of these fusion variables.

Invariants, Projection Operators and $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ Irreducible Schwinger Bosons

We exploit SU(N) Schwinger bosons to construct and analyze the coupled irreducible representations of $SU(N) \times SU(N)$ in terms of the invariant group. The corresponding projection operators are constructed in terms of the invariant group generators. We also construct $SU(N) \times SU(N)$ irreducible Schwinger bosons which directly create these coupled irreducible states. The SU(N) Clebsch Gordan coefficients are computed as the matrix elements of the projection operators.

SU(N) Coherent States and Irreducible Schwinger Bosons

We exploit the SU(N) irreducible Schwinger boson to construct SU(N) coherent states. This construction of SU(N) coherent state is analogous to the construction of the simplest Heisenberg-Weyl coherent states. The coherent states belonging to irreducible representations of SU(N) are labeled by the eigenvalues of the $(N-1)$ SU(N) Casimir operators and are characterized by $(N-1)$ complex orthonormal vectors describing the SU(N) group manifold.

SU(N) Irreducible Schwinger Bosons

We construct SU(N) irreducible Schwinger bosons satisfying certain U(N-1) constraints which implement the symmetries of SU(N) Young tableaues. As a result all SU(N) irreducible representations are simple monomials of $(N-1)$ types of SU(N) irreducible Schwinger bosons. Further, we show that these representations are free of multiplicity problems. Thus all SU(N) representations are made as simple as SU(2).

Prepotential formulation of SU(3) lattice gauge theory

The SU(3) lattice gauge theory is reformulated in terms of SU(3) prepotential harmonic oscillators. This reformulation has enlarged $SU(3)\otimes U(1) \otimes U(1)$ gauge invariance under which the prepotential operators transform like matter fields. The Hilbert space of SU(3) lattice gauge theory is shown to be equivalent to the Hilbert space of the prepotential formulation satisfying certain color invariant Sp(2,R) constraints. The SU(3) irreducible prepotential operators which solve these Sp(2,R) constraints are used to construct SU(3) gauge invariant Hilbert spaces at every lattice site in terms of SU(3) gauge invariant vertex operators. The electric fields and the link operators are reconstructed in terms of these SU(3) irreducible prepotential operators. We show that all the SU(3) Mandelstam constraints become local and take very simple form within this approach. We also discuss the construction of all possible linearly independent SU(3) loop states which solve the Mandelstam constraints. The techniques can be easily generalized to SU(N).
