Spin-Polaronic Effects in Electric Shuttling in a Single Molecule Transistor with Magnetic Leads

Current-voltage characteristics of a spintromechanical device, in which spin-polarized electrons tunnel between magnetic leads with anti-parallel magnetization through a single level movable quantum dot, are calculated. New exchange- and electromechanical coupling-induced (spin-polaronic) effects that determine strongly nonlinear current-voltage characteristics were found. In the low-voltage regime of electron transport the voltage-dependent and exchange field-induced displacement of quantum dot towards the source electrode leads to nonmonotonic behavior of differential conductance that demonstrates the lifting of spin-polaronic effects by electric field. At high voltages the onset of electron shuttling results in the drop of current and negative differential conductance, caused by mechanically-induced increase of tunnel resistivities and exchange field-induced suppression of spin-flips in magnetic field. The dependence of these predicted spin effects on the oscillations frequency of the dot and the strength of electron-electron correlations is discussed.

Polaronic effects in electron shuttling

Shuttle-like mechanism of electron transport through a single level vibrating quantum dot is considered in the regime of strong electromechanical coupling. It is shown that the increment of shuttle instability is a nonmonotonic function of the driving voltage. The interplay of two oppositely acting effects - vibron-assisted electron tunneling and polaronic blockade - results in oscillations of the increment on the energy scale of vibron energy.

Nanoelectromechanical coupling in fullerene peapods probed via resonant electrical transport experiments

Fullerene peapods, that is carbon nanotubes encapsulating fullerene molecules, can offer enhanced functionality with respect to empty nanotubes. However, the present incomplete understanding of how a nanotube is affected by entrapped fullerenes is an obstacle for peapods to reach their full potential in nanoscale electronic applications. Here, we investigate the effect of C60 fullerenes on electron transport via peapod quantum dots. Compared to empty nanotubes, we find an abnormal temperature dependence of Coulomb blockade oscillations, indicating the presence of a nanoelectromechanical coupling between electronic states of the nanotube and mechanical vibrations of the fullerenes. This provides a method to detect the C60 presence and to probe the interplay between electrical and mechanical excitations in peapods, which thus emerge as a new class of nanoelectromechanical systems.

Transport in finite incommensurate Peierls-Fröhlich systems

We show that the conductance of a one-dimensional, finite charge-density-wave (CDW) system of the incommensurate type is not renormalized at low temperatures and depends solely on the leads. Within our formalism, we argue that a similar behavior (perfect conductance) should occur for a wide class of one-dimensional strongly correlated finite systems where interactions are current dependent. The universal conductance is related to the presence of an (anomalous) chiral symmetry. The fundamental role played by the finiteness of the sample and the adiabaticity of the contacts to Fermi-liquid leads is evidenced.
