Reaction-diffusion models for morphological patterning of hESCs

In this paper we consider mathematical modeling of the dynamics of self-organized patterning of spatially confined human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) treated with BMP4 (gastruloids) described in recent experimental works. In the first part of the paper we use the activator-inhibitor equations of Gierer and Meinhardt to identify 3 reaction-diffusion regimes for each of the three morphogenic proteins, BMP4, Wnt and Nodal, based on the characteristic features of the dynamic patterning. We identify appropriate boundary conditions which correspond to the experimental setup and perform numerical simulations of the reaction-diffusion (RD) systems, using the finite element approximation, to confirm that the RD systems in these regimes produce realistic dynamics of the protein concentrations. In the second part of the paper we use analytic tools to address the questions of the existence and stability of non-homogeneous steady states for the reaction-diffusion systems of the type considered in the first part of the paper. We find sufficient conditions on the data of the problem under which the system has an universal attractor.

Realized volatility and parametric estimation of Heston SDEs

We present a detailed analysis of \emph{observable} moments based parameter estimators for the Heston SDEs jointly driving the rate of returns $R_t$ and the squared volatilities $V_t$. Since volatilities are not directly observable, our parameter estimators are constructed from empirical moments of realized volatilities $Y_t$, which are of course observable. Realized volatilities are computed over sliding windows of size $\varepsilon$, partitioned into $J(\varepsilon)$ intervals. We establish criteria for the joint selection of $J(\varepsilon)$ and of the sub-sampling frequency of return rates data. We obtain explicit bounds for the $L^q$ speed of convergence of realized volatilities to true volatilities as $\varepsilon \to 0$. In turn, these bounds provide also $L^q$ speeds of convergence of our observable estimators for the parameters of the Heston volatility SDE. Our theoretical analysis is supplemented by extensive numerical simulations of joint Heston SDEs to investigate the actual performances of our moments based parameter estimators. Our results provide practical guidelines for adequately fitting Heston SDEs parameters to observed stock prices series.

Self-sustained price bubbles driven by Bitcoin innovations and adaptive behavior

We show that infinite divisibility of a trading commodity leads to a self-sustained price bubble when traders use adaptive investment strategies. The adaptive strategy can be viewed as a psychological response of a trader to the situation when the trader's estimation of future prices does not match the actual, realized price. We use a multi-agent model to illustrate the price bubble formation and to quantify its main statistical properties such as the return, the volatility, and the systematic risk of the price bubble to crash. We discuss the plausibility for bubbles to drive prices of digital currencies.

Parametric Estimation from Approximate Data: Non-Gaussian Diffusions

We study the problem of parameters estimation in Indirect Observability contexts, where $X_t \in R^r$ is an unobservable stationary process parametrized by a vector of unknown parameters and all observable data are generated by an approximating process $Y^{\varepsilon}_t$ which is close to $X_t$ in $L^4$ norm. We construct consistent parameter estimators which are smooth functions of the sub-sampled empirical mean and empirical lagged covariance matrices computed from the observable data. We derive explicit optimal sub-sampling schemes specifying the best paired choices of sub-sampling time-step and number of observations. We show that these choices ensure that our parameter estimators reach optimized asymptotic $L^2$-convergence rates, which are constant multiples of the $L^4$ norm $|| Y^{\varepsilon}_t - X_t ||$.

Stochastic Mode-Reduction in Models with Conservative Fast Sub-Systems

A stochastic mode reduction strategy is applied to multiscale models with a deterministic energy-conserving fast sub-system. Specifically, we consider situations where the slow variables are driven stochastically and interact with the fast sub-system in an energy-conserving fashion. Since the stochastic terms only affect the slow variables, the fast-subsystem evolves deterministically on a sphere of constant energy. However, in the full model the radius of the sphere slowly changes due to the coupling between the slow and fast dynamics. Therefore, the energy of the fast sub-system becomes an additional hidden slow variable that must be accounted for in order to apply the stochastic mode reduction technique to systems of this type.

On Cellular Automata Models of Traffic Flow with Look-Ahead Potential

We study the statistical properties of a cellular automata model of traffic flow with the look-ahead potential. The model defines stochastic rules for the movement of cars on a lattice. We analyze the underlying statistical assumptions needed for the derivation of the coarse-grained model and demonstrate that it is possible to relax some of them to obtain an improved coarse-grained ODE model. We also demonstrate that spatial correlations play a crucial role in the presence of the look-ahead potential and propose a simple empirical correction to account for the spatial dependence between neighboring cells.

Pedestrian Flow Models with Slowdown Interactions

In this paper, we introduce and study one-dimensional models for the behavior of pedestrians in a narrow street or corridor. We begin at the microscopic level by formulating a stochastic cellular automata model with explicit rules for pedestrians moving in two opposite directions. Coarse-grained mesoscopic and macroscopic analogs are derived leading to the coupled system of PDEs for the density of the pedestrian traffic. The obtained PDE system is of a mixed hyperbolic-elliptic type and therefore, we rigorously derive higher-order nonlinear diffusive corrections for the macroscopic PDE model. We perform numerical experiments, which compare and contrast the behavior of the microscopic stochastic model and the resulting coarse-grained PDEs for various parameter settings and initial conditions. We also demonstrate that the nonlinear diffusion is essential for reproducing the behavior of the stochastic system in the nonhyperbolic regime.
