Giant Magneto-refractive Effect in Second Harmonic Generation from Plasmonic Antennas in the Mid-infrared

Metallic nanostructures exhibit strong nonlinear-optical response at surface plasmon resonances, where the light-matter coupling efficiency is enhanced. An active modulation of this response can be realized by means of an external magnetic field. Here we utilize a nonlinear magneto-refractive effect in spintronic multilayer antennas to achieve a resonant 20\% modulation in second harmonic generation (SHG) in the mid-infrared. We discuss mechanisms of this modulation and show that it cannot be explained by an unequal enhancement of the electromagnetic field in the two spin states of the multilayer. Instead, we propose a novel contribution to the nonlinear susceptibility, which relies on the spin-dependent electron mean free path in metals. In contrast to magneto-optics in ferromagnets, our approach results in no shift of the resonance and thus ensures that the largest SHG and its strongest modulation are simultaneously observed.

Nanoscale magnetophotonics

This Perspective surveys the state-of-the-art and future prospects of science and technology employing the nanoconfined light (nanophotonics and nanoplasmonics) in combination with magnetism. We denote this field broadly as nanoscale magnetophotonics. We include a general introduction to the field and describe the emerging magneto-optical effects in magnetoplasmonic and magnetophotonic nanostructures supporting localized and propagating plasmons. Special attention is given to magnetoplasmonic crystals with transverse magnetization and the associated nanophotonic non-reciprocal effects, and to magneto-optical effects in periodic arrays of nanostructures. We give also an overview of the applications of these systems in biological and chemical sensing, as well as in light polarization and phase control. We further review the area of nonlinear magnetophotonics, the semiconductor spin-plasmonics, and the general principles and applications of opto-magnetism and nano-optical ultrafast control of magnetism and spintronics.

Effects of Crystal Anisotropy on Optical Phonon Resonances in the Mid-Infrared Second Harmonic Response of SiC

We study the effects of crystal anisotropy on optical phonon resonances in the second harmonic generation (SHG) from silicon carbide (SiC) in its Reststrahl region. By comparing experiments and simulations for isotropic 3C-SiC and anisotropic 4H-SiC in two crystal cuts, we identify several pronounced effects in the nonlinear response which arise solely from the crystal anisotropy. Specifically, we demonstrate that the axial and planar transverse optical phonon resonances selectively and exclusively appear in the corresponding tensor elements of the nonlinear susceptibility, enabling observation of an intense SHG peak originating from a weak phonon mode due to zone-folding along the c-axis of 4H-SiC. Similarly, we identify an anisotropy factor $ζ\equiv ε_\perp/ε_\parallel$ responsible for a steep enhancement of the transmitted fundamental fields at the axial longitudinal optical phonon frequency, resulting in strongly enhanced SHG. We develop a general recipe to extract all these features that is directly applicable to all wurtzite-structure polar dielectrics, where a very similar behavior is expected. Our model study illustrates the opportunities for utilizing the crystal anisotropy for selectively enhancing nonlinear-optical effects in polar dielectrics, which could potentially be extended to built-in anisotropy in artificially designed hybrid materials.

Nonlinear acousto-magneto-plasmonics

We review the recent progress in experimental and theoretical research of interactions between the acoustic, magnetic and plasmonic transients in hybrid metal-ferromagnet multilayer structures excited by ultrashort laser pulses. The main focus is on understanding the nonlinear aspects of the acoustic dynamics in materials as well as the peculiarities in the nonlinear optical and magneto-optical response. For example, the nonlinear optical detection is illustrated in details by probing the static magneto-optical second harmonic generation in gold-cobalt-silver trilayer structures in Kretschmann geometry. Furthermore, we show experimentally how the nonlinear reshaping of giant ultrashort acoustic pulses propagating in gold can be quantified by time-resolved plasmonic interferometry and how these ultrashort optical pulses dynamically modulate the optical nonlinearities. The effective medium approximation for the optical properties of hybrid multilayers facilitates the understanding of novel optical detection techniques. In the discussion we highlight recent works on the nonlinear magneto-elastic interactions, and strain-induced effects in semiconductor quantum dots.

Ultrafast transport of laser-excited spin polarized carriers in Au/Fe/MgO(001)

A time domain approach to probe hot carrier-induced spin dynamics is demonstrated. The experiments are performed in epitaxial Au/Fe/MgO(001), where spin-polarized hot carriers are excited in the Fe layer by 35 fs laser pulses. They propagate to the Au surface where the transient spin polarization is detected by magneto-induced second harmonic generation. Different energies of majority and minority hot carriers excited in the exchange-split Fe band structure lead to their spindependent lifetimes in Au. Accordingly, two spin-polarized current contributions which propagate superdiffusively at different velocities result in a spin current pulse of about 100 fs duration.
