Alexandrov theorem for general nonlocal curvatures: the geometric impact of the kernel

For a general radially symmetric, non-increasing, non-negative kernel $h\in L ^ 1 _{loc} ( R ^ d)$, we study the rigidity of measurable sets in $R ^ d$ with constant nonlocal $h$-mean curvature. Under a suitable "improved integrability" assumption on $h$, we prove that these sets are finite unions of equal balls, as soon as they satisfy a natural nondegeneracy condition. Both the radius of the balls and their mutual distance can be controlled from below in terms of suitable parameters depending explicitly on the measure of the level sets of $h$. In the simplest, common case, in which $h$ is positive, bounded and decreasing, our result implies that any bounded open set or any bounded measurable set with finite perimeter which has constant nonlocal $h$-mean curvature has to be a ball.

On a geometric combination of functions related to Prékopa-Leindler inequality

We introduce a new operation between nonnegative integrable functions on $\mathbb{R} ^n$, that we call geometric combination; it is obtained via a mass transportation approach, playing with inverse distribution functions. The main feature of this operation is that the Lebesgue integral of the geometric combination equals the geometric mean of the two separate integrals; as a natural consequence, we derive a new functional inequality of Prékopa-Leindler type. When applied to the characteristic functions of two measurable sets, their geometric combination provides a set whose volume equals the geometric mean of the two separate volumes. In the framework of convex bodies, by comparing the geometric combination with the $0$-sum, we get an alternative proof of the log-Brunn-Minkowski inequality for unconditional convex bodies and for convex bodies with $n$ symmetries.

Concavity properties of solutions to Robin problems

We prove that the Robin ground state and the Robin torsion function are respectively log-concave and $\frac{1}{2}$-concave on an uniformly convex domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ of class $\mathcal{C}^m$, with $[m -\frac{ N}{2}]\geq 4$, provided the Robin parameter exceeds a critical threshold. Such threshold depends on $N$, $m$, and on the geometry of $Ω$, precisely on the diameter and on the boundary curvatures up to order $m$.

Solenoidal extensions in domains with obstacles: explicit bounds and applications to Navier-Stokes equations

We introduce a new method for constructing solenoidal extensions of fairly general boundary data in (2d or 3d) cubes that contain an obstacle. This method allows us to provide explicit bounds for the Dirichlet norm of the extensions. It runs as follows: by inverting the trace operator, we first determine suitable extensions, not necessarily solenoidal, of the data; then we analyze the Bogovskii problem with the resulting divergence to obtain a solenoidal extension; finally, by solving a variational problem involving the infinity-Laplacian and using ad hoc cutoff functions, we find explicit bounds in terms of the geometric parameters of the obstacle. The natural applications of our results lie in the analysis of inflow-outflow problems, in which an explicit bound on the inflow velocity is needed to estimate the threshold for uniqueness in the stationary Navier-Stokes equations and, in case of symmetry, the stability of the obstacle immersed in the fluid flow.

A duality theory for non-convex problems in the Calculus of Variations

We present a new duality theory for non-convex variational problems, under possibly mixed Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. The dual problem reads nicely as a linear programming problem, and our main result states that there is no duality gap. Further, we provide necessary and sufficient optimality conditions, and we show that our duality principle can be reformulated as a min-max result which is quite useful for numerical implementations. As an example, we illustrate the application of our method to a celebrated free boundary problem. The results were announced in \cite{BoFr}.

Characterization of stadium-like domains via boundary value problems for the infinity Laplacian

We give a complete characterization, as "stadium-like domains", of convex subsets $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ where a solution exists to Serrin-type overdetermined boundary value problems in which the operator is either the infinity Laplacian or its normalized version. In case of the not-normalized operator, our results extend those obtained in a previous work, where the problem was solved under some geometrical restrictions on $Ω$. In case of the normalized operator, we also show that stadium-like domains are precisely the unique convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^n$ where the solution to a Dirichlet problem is of class $C^{1,1} (Ω)$.

A symmetry problem for the infinity Laplacian

Aim of this paper is to prove necessary and sufficient conditions on the geometry of a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ in order that the homogeneous Dirichlet problem for the infinity-Laplace equation in $Ω$ with constant source term admits a viscosity solution depending only on the distance from $\partial Ω$. This problem was previously addressed and studied by Buttazzo and Kawohl. In the light of some geometrical achievements reached in our recent paper "On the characterization of some classes of proximally smooth sets", we revisit the results obtained by Buttazzo and Kawohl and we prove strengthened versions of them, where any regularity assumption on the domain and on the solution is removed. Our results require a delicate analysis based on viscosity methods. In particular, we need to build suitable viscosity test functions, whose construction involves a new estimate of the distance function near singular points.

A new symmetry criterion based on the distance function and applications to PDE's

We prove that, if $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is an open bounded starshaped domain of class $C^2$, the constancy over $\partial Ω$ of the function $$φ(y) = \int_0^{λ(y)} \prod_{j=1}^{n-1}[1-t κ_j(y)]\, dt$$ implies that $Ω$ is a ball. Here $k_j(y)$ and $λ(y)$ denote respectively the principal curvatures and the cut value of a boundary point $y \in \partial Ω$. We apply this geometric result to different symmetry questions for PDE's: an overdetermined system of Monge-Kantorovich type equations (which can be viewed as the limit as $p \to + \infty$ of Serrin's symmetry problem for the $p$-Laplacian), and equations in divergence form whose solutions depend only on the distance from the boundary in some subset of their domain.

Quermassintegrals of quasi-concave functions and generalized Prékopa-Leindler inequalities

We extend to a functional setting the concept of quermassintegrals, well-known within the Minkowski theory of convex bodies. We work in the class of quasi-concave functions defined on the Euclidean space, and with the hierarchy of their subclasses given by $α$-concave functions. In this setting, we investigate the most relevant features of functional quermassintegrals, and we show they inherit the basic properties of their classical geometric counterpart. As a first main result, we prove a Steiner-type formula which holds true by choosing a suitable functional equivalent of the unit ball. Then, we establish concavity inequalities for quermassintegrals and for other general hyperbolic functionals, which generalize the celebrated Prékopa-Leindler and Brascamp-Lieb inequalities. Further issues that we transpose to this functional setting are: integral-geometric formulae of Cauchy-Kubota type, valuation property and isoperimetric/Uryshon-like inequalities.

Optimal convex shapes for concave functionals

Motivated by a long-standing conjecture of Polya and Szegö about the Newtonian capacity of convex bodies, we discuss the role of concavity inequalities in shape optimization, and we provide several counterexamples to the Blaschke-concavity of variational functionals, including capacity. We then introduce a new algebraic structure on convex bodies, which allows to obtain global concavity and indecomposability results, and we discuss their application to isoperimetriclike inequalities. As a byproduct of this approach we also obtain a quantitative version of the Kneser-Süss inequality. Finally, for a large class of functionals involving Dirichlet energies and the surface measure, we perform a local analysis of strictly convex portions of the boundary via second order shape derivatives. This allows in particular to exclude the presence of smooth regions with positive Gauss curvature in an optimal shape for Polya-Szegö problem.

Sharp bounds for the p-torsion of convex planar domains

We obtain some sharp estimates for the $p$-torsion of convex planar domains in terms of their area, perimeter, and inradius. The approach we adopt relies on the use of web functions (i.e. functions depending only on the distance from the boundary), and on the behaviour of the inner parallel sets of convex polygons. As an application of our isoperimetric inequalities, we consider the shape optimization problem which consists in maximizing the $p$-torsion among polygons having a given number of vertices and a given area. A long-standing conjecture by Pólya-Szegö states that the solution is the regular polygon. We show that such conjecture is true within the subclass of polygons for which a suitable notion of "asymmetry measure" exceeds a critical threshold.
