ISS characterization of retarded switching systems with relaxed Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals *

This paper gives further insights about the Lyapunov-Krasovskii characterization of input-tostate stability (ISS) for switching retarded systems on the basis of the results in [I. Haidar and P. Pepe. Lyapunov-krasovskii characterization of the input-to-state stability for switching retarded systems. SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, 59(4):2997-3016, 2021]. We give new characterizations of the ISS property through the existence of a relaxed common Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional. More precisely, we show that the existence of a continuous Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional whose upper right-hand Dini derivative satisfies a dissipation inequality almost everywhere is necessary and sufficient for the ISS of switching retarded systems with measurable inputs and measurable switching signals. Different characterization results, using different derivative notions, are also given.

Upper and lower bounds for the maximal Lyapunov exponent of singularly perturbed linear switching systems

In this paper we consider the problem of determining the stability properties, and in particular assessing the exponential stability, of a singularly perturbed linear switching system. One of the challenges of this problem arises from the intricate interplay between the small parameter of singular perturbation and the rate of switching, as both tend to zero. Our approach consists in characterizing suitable auxiliary linear systems that provide lower and upper bounds for the asymptotics of the maximal Lyapunov exponent of the linear switching system as the parameter of the singular perturbation tends to zero.

Lyapunov characterization of uniform exponential stability for nonlinear infinite-dimensional systems

In this paper we deal with infinite-dimensional nonlinear forward complete dynamical systems which are subject to external disturbances. We first extend the well-known Datko lemma to the framework of the considered class of systems. Thanks to this generalization, we provide characterizations of the uniform (with respect to disturbances) local, semi-global, and global exponential stability, through the existence of coercive and non-coercive Lyapunov functionals. The importance of the obtained results is underlined through some applications concerning 1) exponential stability of nonlinear retarded systems with piecewise constant delays, 2) exponential stability preservation under sampling for semilinear control switching systems, and 3) the link between input-to-state stability and exponential stability of semilinear switching systems.

The buffered chemostat with non-monotonic response functions

We study how a particular spatial structure with a buffer impacts the number of equilibria and their stability in the chemostat model. We show that the occurrence of a buffer can allow a species to persist or on the opposite to go extinct, depending on the characteristics of the buffer. For non-monotonic response functions, we characterize the buffered configurations that make the chemostat dynamics globally asymptotically stable, while this is not possible with single, serial or parallel vessels of the same total volume and input flow. These results are illustrated with the Haldane kinetic function.

Comparison of numerical simulations of reactive transport and chemostat-like models

The objective of the paper is to evaluate the ability of reactive transport models and their numerical implementations (such as MIN3P) to simulate simple microbial transformations in conditions of chemostat or gradostat models, that are popular in microbial ecology and waste treatment ecosystems. To make this comparison, we first consider an abstract ecosystem composed of a single limiting resource and a single microbial species that are carried by advection. In a second stage, we consider another microbial species in competition for the same limiting resource. Comparing the numerical solutions of the two models, we found that the numerical accuracy of simulations of advective transport models performed with MIN3P depends on the evolution of the concentrations of the microbial species: when the state of the system is close to a non-hyperbolic equilibrium, we observe a numerical inaccuracy that may be due to the discretization method used in numerical approximations of reactive transport equations. Therefore, one has to be cautious about the predictions given by the models.

Effects of spatial structure and diffusion on the performances of the chemostat

Given hydric capacity and nutrient flow of a chemostat-like system, we analyse the influence of a spatial structure on the output concentrations at steady-state. Three configurations are compared: perfectly-mixed, serial and parallel with diffusion rate. We show the existence of a threshold on the input concentration of nutrient for which the benefits of the serial and parallel configurations over the perfectly-mixed one are reversed. In addition, we show that the dependency of the output concentrations on the diffusion rate can be non-monotonic, and give precise conditions for the diffusion effect to be advantageous. The study encompasses dead-zone models
