Optimization of the storage database for the Monitoring system of the CTA

We present preliminary test results for the correct sizing of the bare metal hardware that will host the database of the Monitoring system (MON) for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). The MON is the subsystem of the Array Control and Data Acquisition System (ACADA) that is responsible for monitoring and logging the overall CTA array. It acquires and stores monitoring points and logging information from the array elements, at each of the CTA sites. MON is designed and built in order to deal with big data time series, and exploits some of the currently most advanced technologies in the fields of databases and Internet of Things (IoT). To dimension the bare metal hardware required by the monitoring system (excluding the logging), we performed the test campaign that is discussed in this paper. We discuss here the best set of parameters and the optimized configuration to maximize the database data writing in terms of the number of updated rows per second. We also demonstrate the feasibility of our approach in the frame of the CTA requirements.

The Transients Handler System for the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory

The Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) will be the largest and most advanced ground-based facility for gamma-ray astronomy. Several dozens of telescopes will be operated at both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. With the advent of multi-messenger astronomy, many new large science infrastructures will start science operations and target-of-opportunity observations will play an important role in the operation of the CTAO. The Array Control and Data Acquisition (ACADA) system deployed on each CTAO site will feature a dedicated sub-system to manage external and internal scientific alerts: the Transients Handler. It will receive, validate, and process science alerts in order to determine if target-of-opportunity observations can be triggered or need to be updated. Various tasks defined by proposal-based configurations are processed by the Transients Handler. These tasks include, among others, the evaluation of observability of targets and their correlation with known sources or objects. This contribution will discuss the concepts and design of the Transients Handler and its integration in the ACADA system.

The Graphical User Interface of the Operator of the Cherenkov Telescope Array

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation gamma-ray observatory. CTA will incorporate about 100 imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) at a southern site, and about 20 in the north. Previous IACT experiments have used up to five telescopes. Subsequently, the design of a graphical user interface (GUI) for the operator of CTA poses an interesting challenge. In order to create an effective interface, the CTA team is collaborating with experts from the field of Human-Computer Interaction. We present here our GUI prototype. The back-end of the prototype is a Python Web server. It is integrated with the observation execution system of CTA, which is based on the Alma Common Software (ACS). The back-end incorporates a redis database, which facilitates synchronization of GUI panels. redis is also used to buffer information collected from various software components and databases. The front-end of the prototype is based on Web technology. Communication between Web server and clients is performed using Web Sockets, where graphics are generated with the d3.js Javascript library.

Prototyping the graphical user interface for the operator of the Cherenkov Telescope Array

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a planned gamma-ray observatory. CTA will incorporate about 100 imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) at a Southern site, and about 20 in the North. We present a GUI prototype, the concept for which is being developed in collaboration with experts from the field of Human-Computer Interaction. Radio Observations of the Pulsar Wind Nebula HESS J1303-631 Field of View with ATCA

Based on its energy-dependent morphology the initially unidentified very high energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) gamma-ray source HESS J1303-631 was recently associated with the pulsar PSR J1301-6305. Subsequent detection of X-ray and GeV counterparts also supports the identification of the H.E.S.S. source as evolved pulsar wind nebula (PWN). We report here on recent radio observations of the PSR J1301-6305 field of view (FOV) with ATCA dedicated to search for the radio counterpart of this evolved PWN. Observations at 5.5 GHz and 7.5 GHz do not reveal any extended emission associated with the pulsar. The analysis of the archival 1.384 GHz and 2.368 GHz data also does not show any significant emission. The 1.384 GHz data reveal a hint of an extended shell-like emission in the PSR J1301-6305 FOV which might be a supernova remnant. We discuss the implications of the non-detection at radio wavelengths on the nature and evolution of the PWN as well as the possibility of the SNR candidate being the birth place of PSR J1301-6305.
