Phase diagram of alpha matter with Skyrme-like scalar interaction

The equation of state and phase diagram of strongly interacting matter composed of $α$ particles are studied in the mean-field approximation. The particle interactions are included via a Skyrme-like mean field, containing both attractive and repulsive terms. The model parameters are found by fitting known values of binding energy and baryon density in the ground state of $α$ matter, obtained from microscopic calculations by Clark and Wang. Thermodynamic quantities of $α$ matter are calculated in the broad domains of temperature and baryon density, which can be reached in heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies. The model predicts both first-order liquid-gas phase transition and Bose-Einstein condensation of $α$ particles. We present the profiles of scaled variance, sound velocity and isochoric heat capacity along the isentropic trajectories of $α$ matter. Strong density fluctuations are predicted in the vicinity of the critical point at temperature $T_c\approx 14~\textrm{MeV}$ and density $n_c\approx 0.012~\textrm{fm}^{-3}$.

Dark matter annihilation and jet quenching phenomena in the early universe

Dark-matter particles like neutralinos should decouple from the hot cosmic plasma at temperatures of about 40 GeV. Later they can annihilate each other into standard-model particles, which are injected into the dense primordial plasma and quickly loose energy. This process is similar to jet quenching in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, actively studied in RHIC and LHC experiments. Using empirical information from heavy-ion experiments I show that the cosmological (anti)quark and gluon jets are damped very quickly until the plasma remains in the deconfined phase. The charged hadron and lepton jets are strongly damped until the recombination of electrons and protons. The consequences of energy transfer by the annihilation products to the cosmic matter are discussed.

Dynamics and Stability of Chiral Fluid

Starting from the linear sigma model with constituent quarks we derive the chiral fluid dynamics where hydrodynamic equations for the quark fluid are coupled to the equation of motion for the order-parameter field. In a static system at thermal equilibrium this model leads to a chiral phase transition which, depending on the choice of the quark-meson coupling constant, could be a crossover or a first order one. We investigate the stability of the chiral fluid in the static and expanding backgrounds by considering the evolution of perturbations with respect to the mean-field solution. In the static background the spectrum of plane-wave perturbations consists of two branches, one corresponding to the sound waves and another to the sigma-meson excitations. For large couplings these two branches "cross" and the excitation spectrum acquires exponentially growing modes. The stability analysis is also done for the Bjorken-like background solution by explicitly solving the time-dependent differential equation for perturbations in the eta-space. In this case the growth rate of unstable modes is significantly reduced.

Radial oscillations of neutral and charged hybrid stars

We construct stellar models of hadron stars and hybrid stars and calculate the frequencies of their lowest radial mode of vibration. Chandrasekhar's equation for radial oscillations is generalized for stars with internal electric fields and earlier versions of that generalization are simplified. For the hybrid stars a Gibbs construction is employed. It is found that the softening of the equation of state associated with the presence of deconfined quarks reduces the oscillation frequency. We show that a slight charge inbalance should lead to increased maximum mass, decreased central density and lower oscillation frequencies.

Hydrodynamics of a quark droplet II: Implications of a non-zero baryon chemical potential

We present an extended version of the dynamical model for a multi-quark droplet evolution described in our proceeding paper. The model includes collective expansion of the droplet, effects of the vacuum pressure and surface tension, and now a non-zero baryon number. The hadron emission from the droplet is described following Weisskopf's statistical model. We consider evolutions of droplets with different initial temperatures and net baryon number. It is found that the introduction of a non-zero net baryon number does not change the lifetime of the droplets significantly. Only when we consider an initially very baryon-rich, low-temperature droplets is the lifetime is decreased significantly. We have, furthermore, found a convergence of both baryon chemical potential and temperature toward the values $μ_{\rm B} \approx$ 450 MeV and $T \approx 150$ MeV. This convergence is linked to the competing emission of baryons versus mesons.

Hydrodynamics of a quark droplet

We present a simple model of a multi-quark droplet evolution based on the hydrodynamical description. This model includes collective expansion of the droplet, effects of the vacuum pressure and surface tension. The hadron emission from the droplet is described following Weisskopf's statistical model. We have considered evolution of baryon-free droplets which have different initial temperatures and expansion rates. As a typical trend we observe an oscillating behavior of the droplet radius superimposed with a gradual shrinkage due to the hadron emission. The characteristic life time of droplets with radii 1.5-2 fm are about 9-16 fm/c.

Deconfinement Phase Transition in Compact Stars : Maxwell vs. Gibbs Construction of the Mixed Phase

We study different realisations of the first order deconfinement phase transition inside a compact star by comparing the Gibbs and Maxwell construction for the mixed phase. The hadronic sector is described within the relativistic mean field model including hyperons. The quark sector is described by the MIT Bag model. We find that these two realisations lead to very different star properties, in particular, the composition of the stellar matter. We also find that for the Maxwell construction there is a sharp discontinuity in the baryon density and the electron chemical potential. We argue that a sharp jump in the elctron chemical potential should lead to the redistribution of electrons and formation of strong electric fields around the discontinuity surface.

Inner crusts of neutron stars in strongly quantising magnetic fields

We study the properties and stability of nuclei in the inner crust of neutron stars in the presence of strong magnetic fields $\sim 10^{17}$ G. Nuclei coexist with a neutron gas and reside in a uniform gas of electrons in the inner crust. This problem is investigated within the Thomas-Fermi model. We extract the properties of nuclei based on the subtraction procedure of Bonche, Levit and Vautherin. The phase space modification of electrons due to Landau quantisation in the presence of strong magnetic fields leads to the enhancement of electron as well as proton fractions at lower densities $\sim 0.001$ fm$^{-3}$. We find the equilibrium nucleus at each average baryon density by minimising the free energy and show that, in the presence of strong magnetic fields, it is lower than that in the field free case. The size of the spherical cell that encloses a nucleus along with the neutron and electron gases becomes smaller in strong magnetic fields compared with the zero field case. Nuclei with larger mass and atomic numbers are obtained in the presence of strong magnetic fields as compared with cases of zero field.

Properties of Bare Strange Stars Associated with Surface Electric Fields

In this paper we investigate the electrodynamic surface properties of bare strange quark stars. The surfaces of such objects are characterized by the formation of ultra-high electric surface fields which might be as high as $\sim 10^{19}$ V/cm. These fields result from the formation of electric dipole layers at the stellar surfaces. We calculate the increase in gravitational mass associated with the energy stored in the electric dipole field, which turns out to be only significant if the star possesses a sufficiently strong {\em net} electric charge distribution. In part two of the paper, we explore the intriguing possibility of what happens when the electron layer (sphere) rotates with respect to the stellar strange matter body. We find that in this event magnetic fields can be generated which, for moderate effective rotational frequencies between the electron layer and the stellar body, agree with the magnetic fields inferred for several Central Compact Objects (CCOs). These objects could thus be comfortably interpreted as strange stars whose electron atmospheres rotate at frequencies that are moderately different ($\sim 10$ Hz) from the rotational frequencies of the strange star itself.

Strong electric fields induced on a sharp stellar boundary

Due to a first order phase transition, a compact star may have a discontinuous distribution of baryon as well as electric charge densities, as e.g. at the surface of a strange quark star. The induced separation of positive and negative charges may lead to generation of supercritical electric fields in the vicinity of such a discontinuity. We study this effect within a relativistic Thomas-Fermi approximation and demonstrate that the strength of the electric field depends strongly on the degree of sharpness of the surface. The influence of strong electric fields on the stability of compact stars is discussed. It is demonstrated that stable configurations appear only when the counter-pressure of degenerate fermions is taken into consideration.

Boson stars with repulsive selfinteractions

The properties of compact stars made of massive bosons with a repulsive selfinteraction mediated by vector mesons are studied within the mean-field approximation and general relativity. We demonstrate that there exists a scaling property for the mass-radius curve for arbitrary boson masses and interaction strengths which results in an universal mass-radius relation. The radius remains nearly constant for a wide range of compact star masses. The maximum stable mass and radius of boson stars are determined by the interaction strength and scale with the Landau mass and radius. Both, the maximum mass and the corresponding radius increase linearly with the interaction strength so that they can be radically different compared to the other families of boson stars where interactions are ignored.
