Free idempotent generated semigroups: The word problem and structure via gain graphs

Building on the previous extensive study of Yang, Gould and the present author, we provide a more precise insight into the group-theoretical ramifications of the word problem for free idempotent generated semigroups over finite biordered sets. We prove that such word problems are in fact equivalent to the problem of computing intersections of cosets of certain subgroups of direct products of maximal subgroups of the free idempotent generated semigroup in question, thus providing decidability of those word problems under group-theoretical assumptions related to the Howson property and the coset intersection property. We also provide a basic sketch of the global semigroup-theoretical structure of an arbitrary free idempotent generated semigroup, including the characterisation of Green's relations and the key parameters of non-regular $\mathscr{D}$-classes. In particular, we prove that all Schützenberger groups of $\mathsf{IG}(\mathcal{E})$ for a finite biordered set $\mathcal{E}$ must be among the divisors of the maximal subgroups of $\mathsf{IG}(\mathcal{E})$.

Twisted Brauer monoids

We investigate the structure of the twisted Brauer monoid $\mathcal B_n^τ$, comparing and contrasting it to the structure of the (untwisted) Brauer monoid $\mathcal B_n$. We characterise Green's relations and pre-orders on $\mathcal B_n^τ$, describe the lattice of ideals, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for an ideal to be idempotent-generated. We obtain formulae for the rank (smallest size of a generating set) and (where applicable) the idempotent rank (smallest size of an idempotent generating set) of each principal ideal; in particular, when an ideal is idempotent-generated, its rank and idempotent rank are equal. As an application of our results, we also describe the idempotent-generated subsemigroup of $\mathcal B_n^τ$ (which is not an ideal) as well as the singular ideal of $\mathcal B_n^τ$ (which is neither principal nor idempotent-generated), and we deduce a result of Maltcev and Mazorchuk that the singular part of the Brauer monoid $\mathcal B_n$ is idempotent-generated.

Automorphism groups of countable algebraically closed graphs and endomorphisms of the random graph

We establish links between countable algebraically closed graphs and the endomorphisms of the countable universal graph $R$. As a consequence we show that, for any countable graph $Γ$, there are uncountably many maximal subgroups of the endomorphism monoid of $R$ isomorphic to the automorphism group of $Γ$. Further structural information about End $R$ is established including that Aut $Γ$ arises in uncountably many ways as a Schützenberger group. Similar results are proved for the countable universal directed graph and the countable universal bipartite graph.

Direct products of free groups and free idempotent generated semigroups over bands

For each group G which decomposes into a finitary direct product of free groups of finite rank we construct a regular band B such that the free idempotent generated semigroup over B contains a maximal subgroup isomorphic to G. In particular, there exists a (regular) band B_0 with the property that any idempotent generated semigroup whose biordered set is isomorphic to that of B_0 must have all its subgroups abelian.

Unary enhancements of inherently nonfinitely based semigroups

We exhibit a simple condition under which a finite involutary semigroup whose semigroup reduct is inherently nonfinitely based is also inherently nonfinitely based as a unary semigroup. As applications, we get already known as well as new examples of inherently nonfinitely based involutory semigroups. We also show that for finite regular semigroups, our condition is not only sufficient but also necessary for the property of being inherently nonfinitely based to persist. This leads to an algorithmic description of regular inherently nonfinitely based involutory semigroups.

A note on free idempotent generated semigroups over the full monoid of partial transformations

Recently, Gray and Ruskuc (arXiv:1101.1833) proved that if e is a rank k idempotent transformation of the set {1,...,n} to itself and k<=n-2, then the maximal subgroup of the free idempotent generated semigroup over the full transformation monoid T_n containing e is isomorphic to the symmetric group S_k. We prove that the same holds when T_n is replaced by PT_n, the full monoid of partial transformations on {1,...,n}.

A universality result for endomorphism monoids of some ultrahomogeneous structures

We devise a fairly general sufficient condition ensuring that the endomorphism monoid of a countably infinite ultrahomogeneous structure (i.e. a Fra\"ıssé limit) embeds all countable semigroups. This approach provides us not only with a framework unifying the previous scattered results in this vein, but actually yields new applications for endomorphism monoids of the (rational) Urysohn space and the countable universal ultrahomogeneous semilattice.

The Bergman property for endomorphism monoids of some Fra\"ıssé limits

Based on an idea of Y. Péresse and some results of Maltcev, Mitchell and Ruškuc, we present sufficient conditions under which the endomorphism monoid of a countably infinite ultrahomogeneous first-order structure has the Bergman property. This property has played a prominent role both in the theory of infinite permutation groups and, more recently, in semigroup theory. As a byproduct of our considerations, we establish a criterion for a countably infinite ultrahomogeneous structure to be homomorphism-homogeneous.
