On abstract homomorphisms of some special unitary groups

We analyze the abstract representations of the groups of rational points of even-dimensional quasi-split special unitary groups associated with quadratic field extensions. We show that, under certain assumptions, such representations have a standard description, as predicted by a conjecture of Borel and Tits. Our method extends the approach introduced by the first author to study abstract representations of Chevalley groups and is based on the construction and analysis of a certain algebraic ring associated to a given abstract representation.

Linear algebraic groups with good reduction

This article is a survey of conjectures and results on reductive algebraic groups having good reduction at a suitable set of discrete valuations of the base field. Until recently, this subject has received relatively little attention, but now it appears to be developing into one of the central topics in the emerging arithmetic theory of (linear) algebraic groups over higher-dimensional fields. The focus of this article is on the Main Conjecture asserting the finiteness of the number of isomorphism classes of forms of a given reductive group over a finitely generated field that have good reduction at a divisorial set of places of the field. Various connections between this conjecture and other problems in the theory of algebraic groups (such as the analysis of the global-to-local map in Galois cohomology, the genus problem, etc.) are discussed in detail. The article also includes a brief review of the required facts about discrete valuations, forms of algebraic groups, and Galois cohomology.

On abstract homomorphisms of Chevalley groups over the coordinate rings of affine curves

The goal of this paper is to establish a general rigidity statement for abstract representations of elementary subgroups of Chevalley groups of rank at least 2 over a class of commutative rings that includes the localizations of 1-generated rings and the coordinate rings of affine curves. This is achieved by developing the approach introduced in our previous work, and in particular by verifying condition (Z) over the class of rings at hand. Our main result implies, for example, that any finite-dimensional representation of SL_n(Z[X]) (for n at least 3) over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 has a standard description, yielding thereby the first unconditional rigidity statement for finitely generated linear groups other than arithmetic groups/lattices.

On the size of the genus of a division algebra

Let D be a central division algebra of degree n over a field K. One defines the genus gen(D) of D as the set of classes [D'] in the Brauer group Br(K) of K represented by central division algebras D' of degree n over K having the same maximal subfields as D. We prove that if the field K is finitely generated and n is prime to its characteristic, then gen(D) is finite, and give explicit estimations of its size in certain situations.

The genus of a division algebra and the unramified Brauer group

Let D be a finite-dimensional central division algebra over a field K. We define the genus gen(D) of D to be the collection of classes in the Brauer group of K represented by central division K-algebras D' having the same maximal subfields as D. In this paper, we describe a general approach to proving the finiteness of gen(D) and estimating its size that involves the unramified Brauer group with respect to an appropriate set of discrete valuations of K.

On abstract representations of the groups of rational points of algebraic groups and their deformations

In this paper, we continue our study of abstract representations of elementary subgroups of Chevalley groups of rank $\geq 2.$ First, we extend our earlier methods to analyze representations of elementary groups over arbitrary associative rings, and as a consequence, prove the conjecture of Borel and Tits on abstract homomorphisms of the groups of rational points of algebraic groups for groups of the form ${\bf SL}_{n,D}$, where $D$ is a finite-dimensional central division algebra over a field of characteristic zero. Second, we apply our results to study deformations of representations of elementary subgroups of universal Chevalley groups of rank $\geq 2$ over finitely generated commutative rings.

On linear representations of Chevalley groups over commutative rings

Let $G$ be the universal Chevalley-Demazure group scheme corresponding to a reduced irreducible root system of rank $\geq 2$, and let $R$ be a commutative ring. We analyze the linear representations $ρ\colon G(R)^+ \to GL_n (K)$ over an algebraically closed field $K$ of the elementary subgroup $G(R)^+ \subset G(R).$ Our main result is that under certain conditions, any such representation has a standard description, i.e. there exists a commutative finite-dimensional $K$-algebra $B$, a ring homomorphism $f \colon R \to B$ with Zariski-dense image, and a morphism of algebraic groups $σ\colon G(B) \to GL_n (K)$ such that $ρ$ coincides with $σ\circ F$ on a suitable finite index subgroup $Γ\subset G(R)^+,$ where $F \colon G(R)^+ \to G(B)^+$ is the group homomorphism induced by $f.$ In particular, this confirms a conjecture of Borel and Tits for Chevalley groups over a field of characteristic zero.
