Analytic proof of multivariate stable local large deviations and application to deterministic dynamical systems

We give a short analytic proof of local large deviations for i.i.d. random variables in the domain of a multivariate $α$-stable law, $α\in(0,1)\cup(1,2]$. Our method simultaneously covers lattice and nonlattice distributions (and mixtures thereof), bypassing aperiodicity considerations. The proof applies also to the dynamical setting.

Iterated invariance principle for slowly mixing dynamical systems

We give sufficient Gordin-type criteria for the iterated (enhanced) weak invariance principle to hold for deterministic dynamical systems. Such an invariance principle is intrinsically related to the interpretation of stochastic integrals. We illustrate this with examples of deterministic fast-slow systems where our iterated invariance principle yields convergence to a stochastic differential equation.

Convergence to a Lévy process in the Skorohod $M_1$ and $M_2$ topologies for nonuniformly hyperbolic systems, including billiards with cusps

We prove convergence to a Levy process for a class of dispersing billiards with cusps. For such examples, convergence to a stable law was proved by Jung & Zhang. For the corresponding functional limit law, convergence is not possible in the usual Skorohod J_1 topology. Our main results yield elementary geometric conditions for convergence (i) in M_1, (ii) in M_2 but not M_1. In general, we show for a large class of nonuniformly hyperbolic systems how to deduce functional limit laws once convergence to the corresponding stable law is known.

Deterministic homogenization under optimal moment assumptions for fast-slow systems. Part 1

We consider deterministic homogenization (convergence to a stochastic differential equation) for multiscale systems of the form \[ x_{k+1} = x_k + n^{-1} a_n(x_k,y_k) + n^{-1/2} b_n(x_k,y_k), \quad y_{k+1} = T_n y_k, \] where the fast dynamics is given by a family $T_n$ of nonuniformly expanding maps. Part 1 builds on our recent work on martingale approximations for families of nonuniformly expanding maps. We prove an iterated weak invariance principle and establish optimal iterated moment bounds for such maps. (The iterated moment bounds are new even for a fixed nonuniformly expanding map T.) The homogenization results are a consequence of this together with parallel developments on rough path theory in Part 2 by Chevyrev, Friz, Korepanov, Melbourne & Zhang.

St. Petersburg paradox for quasiperiodically hypermeandering spiral waves

It is known that quasiperiodic hypermeander of spiral waves almost certainly produces a bounded trajectory for the spiral tip. We analyse the size of this trajectory. We show that this deterministic question does not have a physically sensible deterministic answer and requires probabilistic treatment. In probabilistic terms, the size of the hypermeander trajectory proves to have an infinite expectation, despite being finite with probability one. This can be viewed as a physical manifestation of the classical "St. Petersburg paradox" from probability theory and economics.

Renewal theorems and mixing for non Markov flows with infinite measure

We obtain results on mixing for a large class of (not necessarily Markov) infinite measure semiflows and flows. Erickson proved, amongst other things, a strong renewal theorem in the corresponding i.i.d. setting. Using operator renewal theory, we extend Erickson's methods to the deterministic (i.e. non-i.i.d.) continuous time setting and obtain results on mixing as a consequence. Our results apply to intermittent semiflows and flows of Pomeau-Manneville type (both Markov and nonMarkov), and to semiflows and flows over Collet-Eckmann maps with nonintegrable roof function.

A note on statistical properties for nonuniformly hyperbolic systems with slow contraction and expansion

We provide a systematic approach for deducing statistical limit laws via martingale-coboundary decomposition, for nonuniformly hyperbolic systems with slowly contracting and expanding directions. In particular, if the associated return time function is square-integrable, then we obtain the central limit theorem, the weak invariance principle, and an iterated version of the weak invariance principle.

Broadband nature of power spectra for intermittent Maps with summable and nonsummable decay of correlations

We present results on the broadband nature of the power spectrum $S(ω)$, $ω\in(0,2π)$, for a large class of nonuniformly expanding maps with summable and nonsummable decay of correlations. In particular, we consider a class of intermittent maps $f:[0,1]\to[0,1]$ with $f(x)\approx x^{1+γ}$ for $x\approx 0$, where $γ\in(0,1)$. Such maps have summable decay of correlations when $γ\in(0,\frac12)$, and $S(ω)$ extends to a continuous function on $[0,2π]$ by the classical Wiener-Khintchine Theorem. We show that $S(ω)$ is typically bounded away from zero for Hölder observables. Moreover, in the nonsummable case $γ\in[\frac12,1)$, we show that $S(ω)$ is defined almost everywhere with a continuous extension $\tilde S(ω)$ defined on $(0,2π)$, and $\tilde S(ω)$ is typically nonvanishing.

Exponential decay of correlations for nonuniformly hyperbolic flows with a C^{1+α} stable foliation, including the classical Lorenz attractor

We prove exponential decay of correlations for a class of $C^{1+α}$ uniformly hyperbolic skew product flows, subject to a uniform nonintegrability condition. In particular, this establishes exponential decay of correlations for an open set of geometric Lorenz attractors. As a special case, we show that the classical Lorenz attractor is robustly exponentially mixing.

Mixing for invertible infinite measure systems

In a recent paper, Melbourne and Terhesiu [Operator renewal theory and mixing rates for dynamical systems with infinite measure, Invent. Math. 189 (2012), 61-110] obtained results on mixing and mixing rates for a large class of noninvertible maps preserving an infinite ergodic invariant measure. Here, we are concerned with extending these results to the invertible setting. Mixing is established for a large class of infinite measure invertible maps. Assuming additional structure, in particular exponential contraction along stable manifolds, it is possible to obtain good results on mixing rates and higher order asymptotics.

On the detection of superdiffusive behaviour in time series

We present a new method for detecting superdiffusive behaviour and for determining rates of superdiffusion in time series data. Our method applies equally to stochastic and deterministic time series data (with no prior knowledge required of the nature of the data) and relies on one realisation (ie one sample path) of the process. Linear drift effects are automatically removed without any preprocessing. We show numerical results for time series constructed from i.i.d. $α$-stable random variables and from deterministic weakly chaotic maps. We compare our method with the standard method of estimating the growth rate of the mean-square displacement as well as the $p$-variation method, maximum likelihood, quantile matching and linear regression of the empirical characteristic function.

Smooth approximation of stochastic differential equations

Consider an Itô process $X$ satisfying the stochastic differential equation $dX=a(X)\,dt+b(X)\,dW$ where $a,b$ are smooth and $W$ is a multidimensional Brownian motion. Suppose that $W_n$ has smooth sample paths and that $W_n$ converges weakly to $W$. A central question in stochastic analysis is to understand the limiting behavior of solutions $X_n$ to the ordinary differential equation $dX_n=a(X_n)\,dt+b(X_n)\,dW_n$. The classical Wong--Zakai theorem gives sufficient conditions under which $X_n$ converges weakly to $X$ provided that the stochastic integral $\int b(X)\,dW$ is given the Stratonovich interpretation. The sufficient conditions are automatic in one dimension, but in higher dimensions the correct interpretation of $\int b(X)\,dW$ depends sensitively on how the smooth approximation $W_n$ is chosen. In applications, a natural class of smooth approximations arise by setting $W_n(t)=n^{-1/2}\int_0^{nt}v\circϕ_s\,ds$ where $ϕ_t$ is a flow (generated, e.g., by an ordinary differential equation) and $v$ is a mean zero observable. Under mild conditions on $ϕ_t$, we give a definitive answer to the interpretation question for the stochastic integral $\int b(X)\,dW$. Our theory applies to Anosov or Axiom A flows $ϕ_t$, as well as to a large class of nonuniformly hyperbolic flows (including the one defined by the well-known Lorenz equations) and our main results do not require any mixing assumptions on $ϕ_t$. The methods used in this paper are a combination of rough path theory and smooth ergodic theory.

Central limit theorems and suppression of anomalous diffusion for systems with symmetry

We give general conditions for the central limit theorem and weak convergence to Brownian motion (the weak invariance principle / functional central limit theorem) to hold for observables of compact group extensions of nonuniformly expanding maps. In particular, our results include situations where the central limit theorem would fail, and anomalous behaviour would prevail, if the compact group were not present. This has important consequences for systems with noncompact Euclidean symmetry and provides the rigorous proof for a conjecture made in our paper: A Huygens principle for diffusion and anomalous diffusion in spatially extended systems. Homogenization for Deterministic Maps and Multiplicative Noise

A recent paper of Melbourne & Stuart, A note on diffusion limits of chaotic skew product flows, Nonlinearity 24 (2011) 1361-1367, gives a rigorous proof of convergence of a fast-slow deterministic system to a stochastic differential equation with additive noise. In contrast to other approaches, the assumptions on the fast flow are very mild. In this paper, we extend this result from continuous time to discrete time. Moreover we show how to deal with one-dimensional multiplicative noise. This raises the issue of how to interpret certain stochastic integrals; it is proved that the integrals are of Stratonovich type for continuous time and neither Stratonovich nor Ito for discrete time. We also provide a rigorous derivation of superdiffusive limit where the stochastic differential equation is driven by a stable Levy process. In the case of one-dimensional multiplicative noise, the stochastic integrals are of Marcus type both in the discrete and continuous time contexts.

Operator renewal theory and mixing rates for dynamical systems with infinite measure

We develop a theory of operator renewal sequences in the context of infinite ergodic theory. For large classes of dynamical systems preserving an infinite measure, we determine the asymptotic behaviour of iterates $L^n$ of the transfer operator. This was previously an intractable problem. Examples of systems covered by our results include (i) parabolic rational maps of the complex plane and (ii) (not necessarily Markovian) nonuniformly expanding interval maps with indifferent fixed points. In addition, we give a particularly simple proof of pointwise dual ergodicity (asymptotic behaviour of $\sum_{j=1}^nL^j$) for the class of systems under consideration. In certain situations, including Pomeau-Manneville intermittency maps, we obtain higher order expansions for $L^n$ and rates of mixing. Also, we obtain error estimates in the associated Dynkin-Lamperti arcsine laws.

A test for a conjecture on the nature of attractors for smooth dynamical systems

Dynamics arising persistently in smooth dynamical systems ranges from regular dynamics (periodic, quasiperiodic) to strongly chaotic dynamics (Anosov, uniformly hyperbolic, nonuniformly hyperbolic modelled by Young towers). The latter include many classical examples such as Lorenz and Hénon-like attractors and enjoy strong statistical properties. It is natural to conjecture (or at least hope) that most dynamical systems fall into these two extreme situations. We describe a numerical test for such a conjecture/hope and apply this to the logistic map where the conjecture holds by a theorem of Lyubich, and to the Lorenz-96 system in 40 dimensions where there is no rigorous theory. The numerical outcome is almost identical for both (except for the amount of data required) and provides evidence for the validity of the conjecture.

Mixing for continuous time dynamical systems with infinite measure

We develop operator renewal theory for flows and apply this to infinite ergodic theory. In particular we obtain results on mixing for a large class of infinite measure semiflows. Examples of systems covered by our results include suspensions over parabolic rational maps of the complex plane, and nonuniformly expanding semiflows with indifferent periodic orbits. In some cases, we obtain higher order asymptotics and rates of mixing.

preprint2013arXiv

A Huygens principle for diffusion and anomalous diffusion in spatially extended systems

We present a universal view on diffusive behaviour in chaotic spatially extended systems for anisotropic and isotropic media. For anisotropic systems, strong chaos leads to diffusive behaviour (Brownian motion with drift) and weak chaos leads to superdiffusive behaviour (Lévy processes with drift). For isotropic systems, the drift term vanishes and strong chaos again leads to Brownian motion. We establish the existence of a nonlinear Huygens principle for weakly chaotic systems in isotropic media whereby the dynamics behaves diffusively in even space dimension and exhibits superdiffusive behaviour in odd space dimensions.

Statistical Properties and Decay of Correlations for Interval Maps with Critical Points and Singularities

We consider a class of piecewise smooth one-dimensional maps with critical points and singularities (possibly with infinite derivative). Under mild summability conditions on the growth of the derivative on critical orbits, we prove the central limit theorem and a vector-valued almost sure invariance principle. We also obtain results on decay of correlations.

Weak Convergence to Stable Lévy Processes for Nonuniformly Hyperbolic Dynamical Systems

We consider weak invariance principles (functional limit theorems) in the domain of a stable law. A general result is obtained on lifting such limit laws from an induced dynamical system to the original system. An important class of examples covered by our result are Pomeau-Manneville intermittency maps, where convergence for the induced system is in the standard Skorohod J_1 topology. For the full system, convergence in the J_1 topology fails, but we prove convergence in the M_1 topology.

First and higher order uniform dual ergodic theorems for dynamical systems with infinite measure

We generalize the proof of Karamata's Theorem by the method of approximation by polynomials to the operator case. As a consequence, we offer a simple proof of \emph{uniform dual ergodicity} for a very large class of dynamical systems with infinite measure, and we obtain bounds on the convergence rate. In many cases of interest, including the Pomeau-Manneville family of intermittency maps, the estimates obtained through real Tauberian remainder theory are very weak. Building on the techniques of complex Tauberian remainder theory, we develop a method that provides \emph{second (and higher) order asymptotics}. In the process, we derive a \emph{higher order Tauberian theorem} for scalar power series, which to our knowledge, has not previously been covered.

On the Implementation of the 0-1 Test for Chaos

In this paper we address practical aspects of the implementation of the 0-1 test for chaos in deterministic systems. In addition, we present a new formulation of the test which significantly increases its sensitivity. The test can be viewed as a method to distill a binary quantity from the power spectrum. The implementation is guided by recent results from the theoretical justification of the test as well as by exploring better statistical methods to determine the binary quantities. We give several examples to illustrate the improvement.

Decay of correlations and invariance principles for dispersing billiards with cusps, and related planar billiard flows

Following recent work of Chernov, Markarian, and Zhang, it is known that the billiard map for dispersing billiards with zero angle cusps has slow decay of correlations with rate 1/n. Since the collisions inside a cusp occur in quick succession, it is reasonable to expect a much faster decay rate in continuous time. In this paper we prove that the flow is rapid mixing: correlations decay faster than any polynomial rate. A consequence is that the flow admits strong statistical properties such as the almost sure invariance principle, even though the billiard map does not. The techniques in this paper yield new results for other standard examples in planar billiards, including Bunimovich flowers and stadia.

Existence and convergence properties of physical measures for certain dynamical systems with holes

We study two classes of dynamical systems with holes: expanding maps of the interval and Collet-Eckmann maps with singularities. In both cases, we prove that there is a natural absolutely continuous conditionally invariant measure $μ$ (a.c.c.i.m.) with the physical property that strictly positive Hölder continuous functions converge to the density of $μ$ under the renormalized dynamics of the system. In addition, we construct an invariant measure $ν$, supported on the Cantor set of points that never escape from the system, that is ergodic and enjoys exponential decay of correlations for Hölder observables. We show that $ν$ satisfies an equilibrium principle which implies that the escape rate formula, familiar to the thermodynamic formalism, holds outside the usual setting. In particular, it holds for Collet-Eckmann maps with holes, which are not uniformly hyperbolic and do not admit a finite Markov partition. We use a general framework of Young towers with holes and first prove results about the \accim and the invariant measure on the tower. Then we show how to transfer results to the original dynamical system. This approach can be expected to generalize to other dynamical systems than the two above classes.

A Vector-Valued Almost Sure Invariance Principle for Hyperbolic Dynamical Systems

We prove an almost sure invariance principle (approximation by d-dimensional Brownian motion) for vector-valued Holder observables of large classes of nonuniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems. These systems include Axiom~A diffeomorphisms and flows as well as systems modelled by Young towers with moderate tail decay rates. In particular, the position variable of the planar periodic Lorentz gas with finite horizon approximates a 2-dimensional Brownian motion.

Decay of correlations for slowly mixing flows

We show that polynomial decay of correlations is prevalent for a class of nonuniformly hyperbolic flows. These flows are the continuous time analogue of a class of nonuniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms for which Young proved polynomial decay of correlations. Roughly speaking, in situations where the decay rate $O(1/n^β)$ has previously been proved for diffeomorphisms, we establish the decay rate $O(1/t^β)$ for typical flows. Applications include certain classes of semidispersing billiards, as well as dispersing billiards with vanishing curvature. In addition, we obtain results for suspension flows with unbounded roof functions. This includes the planar periodic Lorentz flow with infinite horizon.

Almost Sure Invariance Principle For Nonuniformly Hyperbolic Systems

We prove an almost sure invariance principle that is valid for general classes of nonuniformly expanding and nonuniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems. Discrete time systems and flows are covered by this result. In particular, the result applies to the planar periodic Lorentz flow with finite horizon. Statistical limit laws such as the central limit theorem, the law of the iterated logarithm, and their functional versions, are immediate consequences.

Testing for Chaos in Deterministic Systems with Noise

Recently, we introduced a new test for distinguishing regular from chaotic dynamics in deterministic dynamical systems and argued that the test had certain advantages over the traditional test for chaos using the maximal Lyapunov exponent. In this paper, we investigate the capability of the test to cope with moderate amounts of noisy data. Comparisons are made between an improved version of our test and both the ``tangent space'' and ``direct method'' for computing the maximal Lyapunov exponent. The evidence of numerical experiments, ranging from the logistic map to an eight-dimensional Lorenz system of differential equations (the Lorenz 96 system), suggests that our method is superior to tangent space methods and that it compares very favourably with direct methods.
