Cyclic Branched Coverings of Brieskorn Spheres Bounding Acyclic 4-Manifolds

We show that standard cyclic actions on Brieskorn homology 3-spheres with non-empty fixed set do not extend smoothly to any contractible smooth 4-manifold it may bound. The quotient of any such extension would be an acyclic 44-manifold with boundary a related Brieskorn homology sphere. We briefly discuss well known invariants of homology spheres that obstruct acyclic bounding 4-manifolds, and then use a method based on equivariant Yang-Mills moduli spaces to rule out extensions of the actions.

Induction and computation of Bass Nil Groups for finite groups

Let G be a finite group. We show that the Bass Nil-groups NKn(RG)NK_n(RG), n∈Zn \in Z, are generated from the p-subgroups of G by induction maps, certain twisting maps depending on elements in the centralizers of the p-subgroups, and the Verschiebung homomorphisms. As a consequence, the groups NKn(RG)NK_n(RG) are generated by induction from elementary subgroups. For NK0(ZG)NK_0(ZG) we get an improved estimate of the torsion exponent.

Surgery obstructions on closed manifolds and the Inertia subgroup

The Wall surgery obstruction groups have two interesting geometrically defined subgroups, consisting of the surgery obstructions between closed manifolds, and the inertial elements. We show that the inertia group In+1(π,w)I_{n+1}(π,w) and the closed manifold subgroup Cn+1(π,w)C_{n+1}(π,w) are equal in dimensions n+1≥6n+1\geq 6, for any finitely-presented group ππ and any orientation character $w\colon π\to \cy 2$.

Equivariant Bundles and Isotropy Representations

We introduce a new construction, the isotropy groupoid, to organize the orbit data for split ΓΓ-spaces. We show that equivariant principal GG-bundles over split ΓΓ-CW complexes XX can be effectively classified by means of representations of their isotropy groupoids. For instance, if the quotient complex A=Γ\XA=Γ\backslash X is a graph, with all edge stabilizers toral subgroups of ΓΓ, we obtain a purely combinatorial classification of bundles with structural group GG a compact connected Lie group. If GG is abelian, our approach gives combinatorial and geometric descriptions of some results of Lashof-May-Segal and Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson.

Free Actions of Finite Groups on Sn×SnS^n \times S^n

Let pp be an odd prime. We construct a non-abelian extension ΓΓ of S1S^1 by Z/p×Z/pZ/p \times Z/p, and prove that any finite subgroup of ΓΓ acts freely and smoothly on S2p−1×S2p−1S^{2p-1} \times S^{2p-1}. In particular, for each odd prime pp we obtain free smooth actions of infinitely many non-metacyclic rank two pp-groups on S2p−1×S2p−1S^{2p-1} \times S^{2p-1}. These results arise from a general approach to the existence problem for finite group actions on products of equidimensional spheres.

Topological 4-manifolds with geometrically 2-dimensional fundamental groups

Closed oriented 4-manifolds with the same geometrically 2-dimensional fundamental group (satisfying certain properties) are classified up to ss-cobordism by their w2w_2-type, equivariant intersection form and the Kirby-Siebenmann invariant. As an application, we obtain a complete homeomorphism classification of closed oriented 4-manifolds with solvable Baumslag-Solitar fundamental groups, including a precise realization result.

Examples of Free Actions on Products of Spheres

We construct a non-abelian extension ΓΓ of S1S^1 by $\cy 3 \times \cy 3$, and prove that ΓΓ acts freely and smoothly on S5×S5S^{5} \times S^{5}. This gives new actions on S5×S5S^{5} \times S^{5} for an infinite family $\cP$ of finite 3-groups. We also show that any finite odd order subgroup of the exceptional Lie group G2G_2 admits a free smooth action on S11×S11S^{11}\times S^{11}. This gives new actions on S11×S11S^{11}\times S^{11} for an infinite family $\cE $ of finite groups. We explain the significance of these families $\cP $, $\cE $ for the general existence problem, and correct some mistakes in the literature.

The signature of a fibre bundle is multiplicative mod 4

We express the signature modulo 4 of a closed, oriented, 4k4k-dimensional PLPL manifold as a linear combination of its Euler characteristic and the new absolute torsion invariant defined in Korzeniewski [11]. Let F→E→BF \to E \to B be a PLPL fibre bundle, where FF, EE and BB are closed, connected, and compatibly oriented PLPL manifolds. We give a formula for the absolute torsion of the total space EE in terms of the absolute torsion of the base and fibre, and then combine these two results to prove that the signature of EE is congruent modulo 4 to the product of the signatures of FF and BB.

Topological Equivalence of Linear Representations for Cyclic Groups, I & II

In the two parts of this paper we solve a problem of De Rham, proving that Reidemeister torsion invariants determine topological equivalence of linear G-representations, for G a finite cyclic group. Methods in controlled K-theory and surgery theory are developed to establish, and effectively calculate, a necessary and sufficient condition for non-linear similarity in terms of the vanishing of certain non-compact transfer maps. For cyclic groups of 2-power order, we obtain a complete classification of non-linear similarities.
