Binary factors of shifts of finite type

We construct two new classes of topological dynamical systems; one is a factor of a one-sided shift of finite type while the second is a factor of the two-sided shift. The data is a finite graph which presents the shift of finite type, a second finite directed graph and a pair of embeddings of it into the first, satisfying certain conditions. The factor is then obtained from a simple idea based on binary expansion of real numbers. In both cases, we construct natural metrics on the factors and, in the second case, this makes the system a Smale space, in the sense of Ruelle. We compute various algebraic invariants for these systems, including the homology for Smale space developed by the author and the K-theory of various $C^{*}$-algebras associated to them, in terms of the pair of original graphs.

Minimal homeomorphisms and topological $K$-theory

The Lefschetz fixed point theorem provides a powerful obstruction to the existence of minimal homeomorphisms on well-behaved spaces such as finite CW-complexes. We show that these obstructions do not hold for more general spaces. More precisely, minimal homeomorphisms are constructed on space with prescribed $K$-theory or cohomology. We also allow for some control of the map on $K$-theory and cohomology induced from these minimal homeomorphisms. This allows for the construction of many minimal homeomorphisms that are not homotopic to the identity. Applications to $C^*$-algebras will be discussed in another paper.

An excision theorem for the K-theory of C*-algebras, with applications to groupoid C*-algebras

We discuss the relative K-theory for a $C^{*}$-algebra, $A$, together with a $C^{*}$-subalgebra, $A' \subseteq A$. The relative group is denoted $K_{i}(A';A), i = 0, 1$, and is due to Karoubi. We present a situation of two pairs $A' \subseteq A$ and $B' \subseteq B$ are related so that there is a natural isomorphism between their respective relative K-theories. We also discuss applications to the case where $A$ and $B$ are $C^{*}$-algebras of a pair of locally compact, Hausdorff topological groupoids, with Haar systems.

Constructing minimal homeomorphisms on point-like spaces and a dynamical presentation of the Jiang-Su algebra

The principal aim of this paper is to give a dynamical presentation of the Jiang-Su algebra. Originally constructed as an inductive limit of prime dimension drop algebras, the Jiang-Su algebra has gone from being a poorly understood oddity to having a prominent positive role in George Elliott's classification programme for separable, nuclear C*-algebras. Here, we exhibit an etale equivalence relation whose groupoid C*-algebra is isomorphic to the Jiang-Su algebra. The main ingredient is the construction of minimal homeomorphisms on infinite, compact metric spaces, each having the same cohomology as a point. This construction is also of interest in dynamical systems. Any self-map of an infinite, compact space with the same cohomology as a point has Lefschetz number one. Thus, if such a space were also to satisfy some regularity hypothesis (which our examples do not), then the Lefschetz-Hopf Theorem would imply that it does not admit a minimal homeomorphism.

Spectral triples for subshifts

We propose a construction for spectral triple on algebras associated with subshifts. One-dimensional subshifts provide concrete examples Z-actions on Cantor sets. The C*-algebra of this dynamical system is generated by functions in C(X) and a unitary element u implementing the action. Building on ideas of Christensen and Ivan, we give a construction of a family of spectral triples on the commutative algebra C(X). There is a canonical choice of eigenvalues for the Dirac operator D which ensures that [D,u] is bounded, so that it extends to a spectral triple on the crossed product. We study the summability of this spectral triple, and provide examples for which the Connes' distance associated with it on the commutative algebra is unbounded, and some for which it is bounded. We conjecture that our results on the Connes distance extend to the spectral triple defined on the noncommutative algebra.

Trace Asymptotics for C*-Algebras from Smale Spaces

We consider C*-algebras associated with stable and unstable equivalence in hyperbolic dynamical systems known as Smale spaces. These systems include shifts of finite type, in which case these C*-algebras are both AF-algebras. These algebras have fundamental representations on a single Hilbert space (subject to a choice of periodic points) which have a number of special properties. In particular, the product between any element of the first algebra with one from the second is compact. In addition, there is a single unitary operator which implements actions on both. Here, under the hypothesis that the system is mixing, we show that the (semi-finite) traces on these algebras may be obtained through a limiting process and the usual operator trace.
