Quantum-gravitational trans-Planckian energy of a time-dependent black hole

We continue our recent endeavor in which a time-dependent black hole solution of a one-loop quantum-corrected Einstein-scalar system was obtained and its near-horizon behavior was analyzed. The energy analysis led to a trans-Planckian scaling behavior near the event horizon. In the present work the analysis is extended to a rotating black hole solution of an Einstein-Maxwell-scalar system with a Higgs potential. Although the analysis becomes much more complex compared to that of the previous, we observe the same basic features, including the quantum-gravitational trans-Planckian energy near the horizon.

Foliation, jet bundle and quantization of Einstein gravity

In \cite{Park:2014tia} we proposed a way of quantizing gravity with the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian analyses in the ADM setup. One of the key observations was that the physical configuration space of the 4D Einstein-Hilbert action admits a three-dimensional description, thereby making gravity renormalization possible through a metric field redefinition. Subsequently, a more mathematical and complementary picture of the reduction based on foliation theory was presented in \cite{Park:2014qoa}. With the setup of foliation the physical degrees of freedom have been identified with a certain leaf. Here we expand the work of \cite{Park:2014qoa} by adding another mathematical ingredient - an element of jet bundle theory. With the introduction of the jet bundle, the procedure of identifying the true degrees of freedom outlined therein is made precise and the whole picture of the reduction is put on firm mathematical ground.

Hypersurface foliation approach to renormalization of ADM formulation of gravity

We carry out ADM splitting in the Lagrangian formulation and establish a procedure in which (almost) all of the unphysical components of the metric are removed by using the 4D diffeomorphism and the measure-zero 3D symmetry. The procedure introduces a constraint that corresponds to the Hamiltonian constraint of the Hamiltonian formulation, and its solution implies that the 4D dynamics admits an effective description through 3D hypersurface physics. As far as we can see, our procedure implies potential renormalizability of {the ADM formulation of} 4D Einstein gravity for which a complete gauge-fixing in the ADM formulation and hypersurface foliation of geometry are the key elements. If true, this implies that the alleged unrenormalizability of 4D Einstein gravity may be due to the presence of the unphysical fields. The procedure can straightforwardly be applied to quantization around a flat background; the Schwarzschild case seems more subtle. We discuss a potential limitation of the procedure when applying it to explicit time-dependent backgrounds.

Lagrangian constraints and renormalization of 4D gravity

It has been proposed in \cite{Park:2014tia} that 4D Einstein gravity becomes effectively reduced to 3D after solving the Lagrangian analogues of the Hamiltonian and momentum constraints of the Hamiltonian quantization. The analysis in \cite{Park:2014tia} was carried out at the classical/operator level. We review the proposal and make a transition to the path integral account. We then set the stage for explicitly carrying out the two-loop renormalization procedure of the resulting 3D action. We also address a potentially subtle issue in the gravity context concerning whether renormalizability does not depend on the background around which the original action is expanded.

Variation of Entanglement Entropy in Scattering Process

In a scattering process, the final state is determined by an initial state and an S-matrix. We focus on two-particle scattering processes and consider the entanglement between these particles. For two types initial states; i.e., an unentangled state and an entangled one, we calculate perturbatively the change of entanglement entropy from the initial state to the final one. Then we show a few examples in a field theory and in quantum mechanics.

ADM reduction of Einstein action and black hole entropy

We reduce the 4D Einstein-Hilbert action to a constant-radius hypersurface of foliation. The resulting theory is a scalar theory defined on a 3D hypersurface of the original black hole background, and has an exponential potential. Once the the hypersurface is located at the Schwarzschild radius, the 3D theory is effectively reduced to a 2D Liouville type theory. We compute {the entropy associated with the hypersurface intrinsic degrees of freedom}, and show that its leading order reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking area law. The subleading terms come in logarithm/inverse powers of the area.

Dimensional reduction to hypersurface of foliation

When the bulk spacetime has a foliation structure, the collective dynamics of the hypersurfaces should reveal certain aspects of the bulk physics. The procedure of reducing the bulk to a hypersurface, called ADM reduction, was implemented in \cite{Park:2013iqa} where the 4D Einstein-Hilbert action was reduced along the radial reduction. In this work, reduction along the angular directions is considered {with a main goal to firmly establish the method of dimensional reduction to a hypersurface of foliation.} We obtain a theory on a 2D plane (the $(t,r)$-plane) and observe that novel and elaborate boundary effects are crucial for the consistency of the reduction. The reduction leads to a 2D interacting quantum field theory. We comment on its application to black hole information physics.

Indication for unsmooth horizon induced by quantum gravity interaction

The angular ADM reduction of the BTZ spacetime yields a Liouville-type theory. The analysis of the resulting Liouville theory naturally leads to identification of the stretched horizon. The dynamics associated with the stretched horizon has a feature that seems consistent with the unsmooth horizon; the quantum gravity effects are essential for the unsmoothness. We show that the "anomaly" term in the stress-energy tensor is responsible for the Planck scale energy experienced by an infalling observer.

Reduction of BTZ spacetime to hypersurfaces of foliation

We reduce the BTZ spacetime to two kinds of hypersurfaces of foliation: one having a fixed radial coordinate and the other a fixed angular coordinate. The radial reduction leads to a Liouville type theory, and confirms, from the first principle, the expectation laid out in the literature. In the other endeavor, the angular reduction of the 3D gravity is carried out in two different ways; the first again yields a Liouville type theory (different from that of the radial reduction) and the second yields a 2D interacting quantum field theory with quartic potential. Finally we discuss potential implications of our result for the Equivalence Principle and Purity of Hawking radiation.

Worldsheet one-loop energy correction to IIA Giant Magnon

We compute one-loop corrections to the energy of a IIA giant magnon solution in the $AdS_4 \times CP^3$ background by using the standard quantum field theory (QFT) techniques. The string action is expanded around the solution to the quadratic order in the fluctuation fields. The resulting action has 2D coordinate dependent-coefficients, a feature that complicates the analysis. The solution contains a worldsheet velocity parameter $v$, and is expanded in terms of the parameter. A perturbative analysis is carried out by treating the $v$-dependent parts as vertices. The energy is computed by first putting the system in a box of length $L$ and Fourier-transforming the fields into the discrete momentum modes. We compare our result with the results obtained by the algebraic curve method.

ADM reduction of IIB on $H^{p,q}$ and dS braneworld

We propose a new Kaluza-Klein reduction scheme based on ADM decomposition. The scheme has been motivated by AdS/CFT, especially by how the worldvolume theory should appear from the supergravity side. We apply the scheme to IIB supergravity reduced on a 5D hyperboloidal $\cH^5$ space, and show that an (A)dS "braneworld" is be realized after further reduction to 4D. We comment on applications to cosmology and black hole physics. In particular, the scheme should provide a proper paradigm for black hole physics.

On the pattern of black hole information release

We propose a step towards a resolution to black hole information paradox by analyzing scattering amplitudes of a complex scalar field around a Schwarzschild black hole. The scattering cross section reveals much information on the incoming state but exhibits flux loss at the same time. The flux loss should be temporary, and indicate mass growth of the black hole. The black hole should Hawking-radiate subsequently, thereby, compensating for the flux loss. {By examining the purity issue}, we comment on the possibility that information bleaching may be the key to the paradox.

$N^3$ entropy of M5 branes from dielectric effect

We observe that the $N^3$ entropy behavior of near-extermal M5 branes can be reproduced from SYM side with the role of Myers' terms. We start by generalizing the Klebanov-Tseytlin (KT) supergravity solution that displays the $N^3$ entropy behavior. The new feature of the general solution is visibility of the "internal" degrees of the M5 branes, i.e., the M0 branes and the M2 branes. With the rationale provided by the supergravity analysis, we consider a D0 brane quantum mechanical setup with Myers' terms. Using localization technique, we show that the leading $N^3$ behavior of the free energy comes from the "classical contribution" with the rest sub-leading.

Fuzzy Kaluza-Klein induced M2's from a single M5

We propose an algorithmic procedure of obtaining multiple M2 brane dynamics starting with an action of a single M5 brane. The procedure involves a novel Kaluza-Klein reduction. First, the M5 brane action is truncated to keep a few leading terms in the derivative expansion. Then 3+3 splitting of dimensions is carried out. With expansion in terms of the S*2 spherical harmonics, the fields are associated with SU(N) (or its infinite extension) gauge algebra. We present an elaborate reduction procedure that leads to ABJM theory when the fuzzy spherical harmonics are replaced by SU(N) gauge generators.

More on closed string induced higher derivative interactions on D-branes

In our continued efforts of matching full string computations with the corresponding effective field theory computations, we evaluate string theory correlators in closed forms. In particular, we consider a correlator between three SYM vertex operators and one Ramond-Ramond $C$-field vertex operator: $<V_{C}V_ϕ V_AV_A>$. We show that the infinite number of massless poles of this amplitude can be reproduced by the Born-Infeld action, the Wess-Zumino terms, and their higher derivative corrections. More specifically we find, up to an on-shell ambiguity, two scalar field and two gauge field couplings to all orders in $α'$ such that the infinite number of massless poles of the field theory amplitude exactly match the infinite number of massless poles of S-matrix elements of $<V_{C}V_ϕ V_AV_A>$. We comment on close intertwinedness of an open string and a closed string that must be behind the matching.

Near-Extremal Black Branes with n*3 Entropy Growth

In this paper, which is a companion to ArXiv:1204.2711[hep-th], we formulate a criterion for constructing 11D/10D maximal supergravity black-brane solutions with the near-extremal $S\sim n^3T^5$ entropy-temperature relation. We present explicit examples of such solutions with special attention paid to thermodynamics of black M-waves (KK-waves), intersecting/interpolating black branes with KK-waves, M2/M5 branes and their descents. We find the conditions on charges and numbers of branes in intersections, under which the dielectric effect of brane polarization becomes manifest on the supergravity side. We also briefly discuss the shear viscosity per entropy bound of M5 and D4 black branes within the AdS/CFT hydrodynamical limit.

SYM anomalous dimension from open string engineered curvature

In the full type IIB open superstring setup, we show that there exists a vertex operator, denoted by $V_L$, whose renormalization reproduces the same anomalous dimension matrix that was obtained by Minahan and Zarembo (MZ) in {\em JHEP} {\bf 0303}, 013 (2003). The vertex operator is a gauge singlet, and has the same SO(6) index structure as the operator used by MZ. To obtain the SYM anomalous dimensions, one of the key ingredients is the non-abelianization of the non-linear sigma model action in a D-brane background. In {\em Phys.\ Lett.} {\bf B 660}, 583 (2008), it was conjectured that quantum effects of open strings on a stack of D-branes should generate the curvature. Even though the conjecture had passed a few consistency checks, the role of the higher order curvature terms has remain mostly unobserved until now. By choosing a special form of the non-abelianized counter vertex, $V_G$, we show that the SYM result is reproduced. We comment on fermionic completion of $V_L$ and on how the special form of the non-abelian vertex $V_G$ may arise.

Universality in all-order $α'$ corrections to BPS/non-BPS brane world volume theories

Knowledge of all-$α'$ higher derivative corrections to leading order BPS and non-BPS brane actions would serve in future endeavor of determining the complete form of the non-abelian BPS and tachyonic effective actions. In this paper, we note that there is a universality in the all-$α'$ order corrections to BPS and non-BPS branes. We compute amplitudes between one Ramond-Ramond $C$-field vertex operator and several SYM gauge/scalar vertex operators. Specifically, we evaluate in closed form string correlators of two-point amplitudes $\cal A^{Cϕ}$, $\cal A^{CA}$, a three-point amplitude $\cal A^{Cϕϕ}$ and a four-point amplitude $\cal A^{Cϕϕϕ}$. We carry out pole and contact term analysis. In particular we reproduce some of the contact terms and the infinite massless poles of $\cal A^{Cϕϕϕ}$ by SYM vertices obtained through the universality.

Scattering of massive open strings in pure spinor

In {\em Phys.\ Lett.} {\bf B 660}, 583 (2008), it was proposed that the D-brane geometry could be produced by open string quantum effects. In an effort to verify the proposal, we consider scattering amplitudes involving {\em massive} open superstrings. The main goal of this paper is to set the ground for two-loop "renormalization" of an oriented open superstring on a D-brane and to strengthen our skill in the pure spinor formulation of a superstring, an effective tool for multi-loop string diagrams. We start by reviewing scattering amplitudes of massless states in the 2D component method of the NSR formulation. A few examples of massive string scattering are worked out. The NSR results are then reproduced in the pure spinor formulation. We compute the amplitudes using the massive vertex operator constructed by Berkovits and Chandia in {\em JHEP} {\bf 0208}, 040 (2002). We point out that it may be possible to discover new Riemann type identities involving Jacobi $\vartheta$-functions by comparing a NSR computation and the corresponding pure spinor computation.

Pure spinor computation towards open string three-loop

Using the recent results in the pure spinor formulation, we lay out a ground-work towards the full momentum space amplitudes of open superstrings at three-loop. After briefly reviewing the one-loop amplitude, we directly work out the two-loop and reproduce the result that was obtained by a symmetry argument. For the three-loop, first we use the two-loop regulator as a warm-up exercise. The result vanishes. We then employ the regulator that has been recently proposed by Aisaka and Berkovits (AB). It is noted that the terms in higher power in $\frac{1}{λ\barλ}$ that render the two-loop regulator disqualified for the three-loop do not contribute. This with a few other indications suggests a possibility that the AB regulator might also lead to a vanishing result. Nevertheless, we argue that it is possible to acquire the three-loop amplitude, and present a result that we anticipate to be the three-loop amplitude.

Semiclassical circular strings in AdS_5 and "long" gauge field strength operators

We consider circular strings rotating with equal spins S_1=S_2=S in two orthogonal planes in AdS_5 and suggest that they may be dual to "long" gauge theory operators built out of self-dual components of gauge field strength. As was found in hep-th/0404187, the one-loop anomalous dimensions of the such gauge-theory operators are described by an anti-ferromagnetic XXX_1 spin chain and scale linearly with length L>>1. We find that in the case of rigid rotating string both the classical energy E_0 and the 1-loop string correction E_1 depend linearly on the spin S (within the stability region of the solution). This supports the relation between the rigid rotating string and the gauge-theory operator corresponding to the maximal-spin (ferromagnetic) state of the XXX_1 spin chain. The energy of more general rotating and pulsating strings also happens to scale linearly with both the spin and the oscillation number. Such solutions should be dual to other lower-spin states of the spin chain, with the anti-ferromagnetic ground state presumably corresponding to the string pulsating in two planes with no rotation.

Vertex operator formulation of scattering around black hole

We propose a full-fledged open string framework that seems suited to study the black hole information paradox. We set up a configuration to compute the scattering amplitude of a IIB open string around a D5-brane. The D5-brane is situated at the origin of a transverse D3-brane. A string perturbation theory is employed where the geometry of the D5-brane is treated as a potential. We reason that the setup is capable of reconciling the unitary evolution of states and information loss that is measured by an observer on the D3 brane. With the configurations of these kinds, the information loss is an apparent phenomenon: it is just a manifestation of the fact that the D3-observer does not have access to the "hair" of the D5 black brane.

Open string engineering of D-brane geometry

One-loop scattering on a stack of D3 branes was considered in arXiv:0801.0218 [hep-th]. Divergence was found and its cancelation mechanism was proposed, wherein it was conjectured that the D-brane geometry be introduced in the form of counter vertex operators. Here we verify the conjecture at the first few leading orders in an expansion method that we call large-$r_0$ expansion. We comment on the relation with the Fischler-Susskind mechanism and discuss the implications of our result for AdS/CFT.

Tachyon condensation and `bounce' in the D1-D5 system

We construct supergravity solutions dual to microstates of the D1-D3-D5 system with nonzero B field moduli. Just like the D1-D5 solutions in hep-th/0109154 these solutions are generically nonsingular everywhere, with the `throat' closing smoothly near r=0. We write expressions relating the asymptotic supergravity fields to the integral brane charges. We study the infall of a D1 brane down the throat of the geometries. This test brane `bounces' off the smooth end for generic initial conditions. The details of the bounce depend on both the choice of D1-D3-D5 microstate and the direction of approach of the infalling D1 brane. In the dual field theory description we see that the tachyon mode starts to condense, but the tachyon bounces back up the potential hill without reaching the deepest point of the potential.

Strong Coupling Limit of Open String: Born-Infeld Analysis

We consider a large coupling limit of a Born-Infeld action in a curved background of an arbitrary metric and a constant two form field. Following hep-th/0009061, we go to the Hamiltonian description. The Hamiltonian can be dualized and the dual action admits a string-like configuration as its solution. We interpret it as a closed string configuration. The procedure can be viewed as a novel way of bringing out the appropriate degrees of freedom, a closed string, for a open string under the strong coupling limit. We argue that this interpretation implies a large number of dual pairs of gauge and gravity theories whose particular examples are AdS/CFT and matrix theory conjectures.

Supergravity duals of gauge theories from F(4) gauged supergravity in six dimensions

We construct supergravity solutions dual to twisted field theories that are the worldvolume theories of D4-branes wrapped on 2, 3-cycles, and NS-fivebranes on 3-cycles. We first obtain the solutions for the Romans' six-dimensional gauged supergravity theories and then up-lift them to ten dimensions. In particular, we find solutions for field configurations with either non-Abelian fields or B-fields being excited. One of these solutions, in the massless case, is up-lifted to the massless type IIA string theory. This is the first example of such a kind. The cases studied provide new examples of the AdS/CFT duality involving twisted field theories.
