Tracing spatial confinement in semiconductor quantum dots by high-order harmonic generation

We report here on results of experimental-theoretical investigation of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in layers of CdSe semiconductor quantum dots of different sizes and a reference bulk CdSe thin film. We observe a strong decrease in the efficiency, up to complete suppression of HHG with energies of quanta above the bandgap for the smallest dots, whereas the intensity of below bandgap harmonics remains weakly affected by the dot size. In addition, it is observed that the ratio between suppression of above gap harmonics versus below gap harmonics increases with driving wavelength. We suggest that the reduction in the dot size below the classical electron oscillatory radius and the corresponding off the dots wall scattering limits the maximum acceleration by the laser field. Moreover, this scattering leads to a chaotization of motion, causing dephasing and a loss of coherence, therefore suppressing the efficiency of the emission of highest-order harmonics. Our results demonstrate a new regime of intense laser-nanoscale solid interaction, intermediate between the bulk and single molecule response.

Tunable sub-luminal propagation of narrowband x-ray pulses

Group velocity control is demonstrated for x-ray photons of 14.4 keV energy via a direct measurement of the temporal delay imposed on spectrally narrow x-ray pulses. Sub-luminal light propagation is achieved by inducing a steep positive linear dispersion in the optical response of 57{}^{57}Fe Mössbauer nuclei embedded in a thin film planar x-ray cavity. The direct detection of the temporal pulse delay is enabled by generating frequency-tunable spectrally narrow x-ray pulses from broadband pulsed synchrotron radiation. Our theoretical model is in good agreement with the experimental data.

Exotic dense matter states pumped by relativistic laser plasma in the radiation dominant regime

The properties of high energy density plasma are under increasing scrutiny in recent years due to their importance to our understanding of stellar interiors, the cores of giant planets1^{1}, and the properties of hot plasma in inertial confinement fusion devices2^2. When matter is heated by X-rays, electrons in the inner shells are ionized before the valence electrons. Ionization from the inside out creates atoms or ions with empty internal electron shells, which are known as hollow atoms (or ions)3,4,5^{3,4,5}. Recent advances in free-electron laser (FEL) technology6,7,8,9^{6,7,8,9} have made possible the creation of condensed matter consisting predominantly of hollow atoms. In this Letter, we demonstrate that such exotic states of matter, which are very far from equilibrium, can also be formed by more conventional optical laser technology when the laser intensity approaches the radiation dominant regime10^{10}. Such photon-dominated systems are relevant to studies of photoionized plasmas found in active galactic nuclei and X-ray binaries11^{11}. Our results promote laser-produced plasma as a unique ultra-bright x-ray source for future studies of matter in extreme conditions as well as for radiography of biological systems and for material science studies12,13,14,15^{12,13,14,15}.
