Cabibbo suppressed hyperon production off nuclei induced by antineutrinos

In this work we study the production of $Σ$ and $Λ$ hyperons in strangeness changing $ΔS = -1$ charged current interactions of muon antineutrinos on nuclear targets. At the nucleon level, besides quasielastic scattering we consider the inelastic mechanism in which a pion is produced alongside the hyperon. Its relevance for antineutrinos with energies below 2 GeV is conveyed in integrated and differential cross sections. We observe that the distributions on the angle between the hyperon and the final lepton are clearly different for quasielastic and inelastic processes. Hyperon final state interactions, modeled with an intranuclear cascade, lead to a significant transfer from primary produced $Σ$'s into final $Λ$'s. They also cause considerable energy loss, which is apparent in hyperon energy distributions. We have investigated $Λ$ production off ${}^{40}$Ar in the conditions of the recently reported MicroBooNE measurement. We find that the $Λπ$ contribution, dominated by $Σ^*(1385)$ excitation, accounts for about one third of the cross section.

Analysis of the kinematic boundaries of the quasi-elastic neutrino-nucleus cross section in the superscaling model with a relativistic effective mass

In this work we obtain the analytical expressions for the boundaries of the charged current quasi-elastic double differential cross section in terms of dimensionless energy and momentum transfers, for the Relativistic Fermi Gas (RFG) and the Super-Scaling approach with relativistic effective mass (SuSAM*) models, within the scaling formalism. In addition, we show that this double differential cross section in the scaling formalism has very good properties to be implemented in the Monte Carlo (MC) neutrino event generators, particularly because its peak is almost flat with the (anti)neutrino energy. This makes it especially well-suited for the event generation by the acceptance-rejection method usually used in the neutrino generators. Finally, we analyze the total charged current quasi-elastic (CCQE) cross section $σ(E_ν)$ for both models and attribute the enhancement observed in the SuSAM* total cross section to the high-momentum components which are present, in a phenomenological way, in its scaling function, while these are absent in the RFG model.

Semiempirical formula for electroweak response functions in the two-nucleon emission channel in neutrino-nucleus scattering

A semi-empirical formula for the electroweak response functions in the two-nucleon emission channel is proposed. The method consists in expanding each one of the vector-vector, axial-axial and vector-axial responses as sums of six sub-responses. These corresponds to separating the meson-exchange currents as the sum of three currents of similar structure, and expanding the hadronic tensor, as the sum of the separate contributions from each current plus the interferences between them. For each sub-response we factorize the coupling constants, the electroweak form factors, the phase space and the delta propagator, for the delta forward current. The remaining spin-isospin contributions are encoded in coefficients for each value of the momentum transfer, $q$. The coefficients are fitted to the exact results in the relativistic mean field model of nuclear matter, for each value of $q$. The dependence on the energy transfer, $ω$ is well described by the semi-empirical formula. The $q$-dependency of the coefficients of the sub-responses can be parameterized or can be interpolated from the provided tables. The description of the five theoretical responses is quite good. The parameters of the formula, the Fermi momentum, number of particles relativistic effective mass, vector energy the electroweak form factors and the coupling constants, can be modified easily. This semi-empirical formula can be applied to the cross-section of neutrinos, antineutrinos and electrons.

Weak structure functions in $ν_l-N$ and $ν_l-A$ scattering with nonperturbative and higher order perturbative QCD effects

We study the effect of various perturbative and nonperturbative QCD corrections on the free nucleon structure functions ($F_{iN}^{WI}(x,Q^2); ~i=1-3$) and their implications in the determination of nuclear structure functions. The evaluation of the nucleon structure functions has been performed by using the MMHT 2014 PDFs parameterization, and the TMC and HT effects are incorporated following the works of Schienbein et al. and Dasgupta et al., respectively. These nucleon structure functions are taken as input in the determination of nuclear structure functions. The numerical calculations for the $ν_l/\barν_l-A$ DIS process have been performed by incorporating the nuclear medium effects like Fermi motion, binding energy, nucleon correlations, mesonic contributions, shadowing and antishadowing in several nuclear targets such as carbon, polystyrene scintillator, iron and lead which are being used in MINERvA, and in argon nucleus which is relevant for the ArgoNeuT and DUNE experiments. The differential scattering cross sections $\frac{d^2σ_A^{WI}}{dx dy}$ and $(\frac{dσ_A^{WI}}{dx}/\frac{dσ_{CH}^{WI}}{dx})$ have also been studied in the kinematic region of MINERvA experiment. The theoretical results are compared with the recent experimental data of MINERvA and the earlier data of NuTeV, CCFR, CDHSW and CHORUS collaborations. Moreover, a comparative analysis of the present results for the ratio $(\frac{dσ_A^{WI}}{dx}/\frac{dσ_{CH}^{WI}}{dx})$, and the results from the MC generator GENIE and other phenomenological models of Bodek and Yang, and Cloet et al., has been performed in the context of MINERvA experiment. The predictions have also been made for $\barν_l-A$ cross section relevant for MINERvA experiment.

Charged-current neutrino-nucleus reactions within the SuSAv2-MEC approach

We present a detailed study of charged-current (CC) neutrino-nucleus reactions in a fully relativis- tic framework and comparisons with recent experiments spanning an energy range from hundreds of MeV up to 100 GeV within the SuperScaling Approach, which is based on the analysis of electron- nucleus scattering data and has been recently improved with the inclusion of Relativistic Mean Field theory effects. We also evaluate and discuss the impact of two-particle two-hole meson-exchange currents (2p-2h MEC) on neutrino-nucleus interactions through the analysis of two-particle two-hole axial and vector contributions to weak response functions in a fully relativistic Fermi gas. The results show a fairly good agreement with experimental data over the whole range of neutrino energies.

Effects of Nuclear Medium on the Sum Rules in Electron and Neutrino Scattering

In this work, we study the influence of nuclear medium effects on various parton model sum rules in nuclei and compare the results with the free nucleon case. We have used relativistic nucleon spectral function to take into account Fermi motion, binding and nucleon correlations. The pion and rho meson cloud contributions have been incorporated in a microscopic model. The effect of shadowing has also been considered.

Electromagnetic and Weak Nuclear Structure Functions $F_{1,2}(x,Q^2)$ in the Intermediate Region of $Q^2$

We have studied nuclear structure functions $F_{1A}(x,Q^2)$ and $F_{2A}(x,Q^2)$ for electromagnetic and weak processes in the region of $1 GeV^2 < Q^2 <8 GeV^2$. The nuclear medium effects arising due to Fermi motion, binding energy, nucleon correlations, mesonic contributions and shadowing effects are taken into account using a many body field theoretical approach. The calculations are performed in a local density approximation using a relativistic nucleon spectral function. The results are compared with the available experimental data. Implications of nuclear medium effects on the validity of Callan-Gross relation are also discussed.

Emission of neutron-proton and proton-proton pairs in electron scattering induced by meson-exchange currents

We use a relativistic model of meson-exchange currents to compute the proton-neutron and proton-proton yields in $(e,e')$ scattering from $^{12}$C in the 2p-2h channel. We compute the response functions and cross section with the relativistic Fermi gas model for a range of kinematics from intermediate to high momentum transfers. We find a large contribution of neutron-proton configurations in the initial state, as compared to proton-proton pairs. The different emission probabilities of distinct species of nucleon pairs are produced in our model only by meson-exchange currents, mainly by the $Δ$ isobar current. We also analyze the effect of the exchange contribution and show that the direct/exchange interference strongly affects the determination of the np/pp ratio.

Emission of neutron-proton and proton-proton pairs in neutrino scattering

We use a recently developed model of relativistic meson-exchange currents to compute the neutron-proton and proton-proton yields in $(ν_μ,μ^-)$ scattering from $^{12}$C in the 2p-2h channel. We compute the response functions and cross sections with the relativistic Fermi gas model for different kinematics from intermediate to high momentum transfers. We find a large contribution of neutron-proton configurations in the initial state, as compared to proton-proton pairs. In the case of charge-changing neutrino scattering the 2p-2h cross section of proton-proton emission ({\it i.e.,} np in the initial state) is much larger than for neutron-proton emission ({\it i.e.,} two neutrons in the initial state) by a $(ω,q)$-dependent factor. The different emission probabilities of distinct species of nucleon pairs are produced in our model only by meson-exchange currents, mainly by the $Δ$ isobar current. We also analyze other effects including exchange contributions and the effect of the axial and vector currents.

Medium effects in the deep-inelastic charged lepton/neutrino-A scattering

In this work, we have discussed the recent developments that have taken place to understand the differences in the weak $F_{2A}^{Weak} (x,Q^2)$ and electromagnetic $F_{2A}^{EM} (x,Q^2)$ nuclear structure functions. Also we present the results of our work on nuclear medium effects on $F_{2A}^{Weak} (x,Q^2)$ and $F_{2A}^{EM} (x,Q^2)$ for a wide range of $x$ and $Q^2$. These results have been obtained using a microscopic nuclear model, where to incorporate nuclear medium effects, Fermi motion, binding energy, nucleon correlations, mesonic contributions from pion and rho mesons and shadowing effects are considered. The calculations are performed in local density approximation using relativistic nucleon spectral function. We have also compared the theoretical results with the recent experimental data on electromagnetic and weak structure functions. Furthermore, we have studied the nuclear medium effects in Drell-Yan(DY) process and present the results for differential cross section, and the results are compared with the data of E772 experiment.

Nuclear medium effects in $F_{2A}^{EM}(x,Q^2)$ and $F_{2A}^{Weak}(x,Q^2)$ structure functions

Recent phenomenological analysis of experimental data on DIS processes induced by charged leptons and neutrinos/antineutrinos beams on nuclear targets by CTEQ collaboration has confirmed the observation of CCFR and NuTeV collaborations, that weak structure function $F_{2A}^{Weak} (x,Q^2)$ is different from electromagnetic structure function $F_{2A}^{EM} (x,Q^2)$ in a nucleus like iron, specially in the region of low $x$ and $Q^2$. In view of this observation we have made a study of nuclear medium effects on $F_{2A}^{Weak} (x,Q^2)$ and $F_{2A}^{EM} (x,Q^2)$ for a wide range of $x$ and $Q^2$ using a microscopic nuclear model. We have considered Fermi motion, binding energy, nucleon correlations, mesonic contributions from pion and rho mesons and shadowing effects to incorporate nuclear medium effects. The calculations are performed in a local density approximation using a relativistic nucleon spectral function which includes nucleon correlations. The numerical results in the case of iron nucleus are compared with the experimental data.

The role of meson exchange currents in charged current (anti)neutrino-nucleus scattering

We present our recent progress in the description of neutrino-nucleus interaction in the GeV region, of interest for ongoing and future oscillation experiments. In particular, we discuss the weak excitation of two-particle-two-hole states induced by meson exchange currents in a fully relativistic framework. We compare the results of our model with recent measurements of neutrino scattering cross sections, showing the crucial role played by two-nucleon knockout in the interpretation of the data.

2p-2h excitations in neutrino scattering: angular distribution and frozen approximation

We study the phase-space dependence of 2p-2h excitations in neutrino scattering using the relativistic Fermi gas model. We follow a similar approach to other authors, but focusing in the phase-space properties, comparing with the non-relativistic model. A careful mathematical analysis of the angular distribution function for the outgoing nucleons is performed. Our goals are to optimize the CPU time of the 7D integral to compute the hadron tensor in neutrino scattering, and to conciliate the different relativistic and non relativistic models by describing general properties independently of the two-body current. For some emission angles the angular distribution becomes infinite in the Lab system, and we derive a method to integrate analytically around the divergence. Our results show that the frozen approximation, obtained by neglecting the momenta of the two initial nucleons inside the integral of the hadron tensor, reproduces fairly the exact response functions for constant current matrix elements.

Nuclear medium effects in structure functions of nucleon at moderate $Q^2$

Recent experiments performed on inclusive electron scattering from nuclear targets have measured the nucleon electromagnetic structure functions $F_1(x,Q^2)$, $F_2(x,Q^2)$ and $F_L(x,Q^2)$ in $^{12}C$, $^{27}Al$, $^{56}Fe$ and $^{64}Cu$ nuclei. The measurements have been done in the energy region of $1 GeV^2 < W^2 < 4 GeV^2$ and $Q^2$ region of $0.5 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 4.5 GeV^2$. We have calculated nuclear medium effects in these structure functions arising due to the Fermi motion, binding energy, nucleon correlations, mesonic contributions from pion and rho mesons and shadowing effects. The calculations are performed in a local density approximation using relativistic nucleon spectral function which include nucleon correlations. The numerical results are compared with the recent experimental data from JLab and also with some earlier experiments.

Parity violating asymmetry with nuclear medium effects in deep inelastic $\vec e$ scattering

Recently at JLab using polarised electron beam on unpolarised deuteron target measurements have been performed for the parity violating asymmetry($A_{PV}$) and there are future plans to measure this asymmetry using various nuclear targets. In this paper, we study $A_{PV}$ in nuclear targets like $^{12}C$, $^{56}Fe$ and $^{208}Pb$, in a local density approximation using spectral function which takes into account Fermi motion, binding energy correction and nucleon correlations. Furthermore, the pion and rho cloud contributions have also been taken into account. The present model has been used earlier to study medium effects in electromagnetic as well as weak interaction induced processes in the DIS region.

Scaling violation and relativistic effective mass from quasielastic electron scattering: implications for neutrino reactions

The experimental data from quasielastic electron scattering from $^{12}$C are reanalyzed in terms of a new scaling variable suggested by the interacting relativistic Fermi gas with scalar and vector interactions, which is known to generate a relativistic effective mass for the interacting nucleons. By choosing a mean value of this relativistic effective mass $m_N^* =0.8 m_N$, we observe that most of the data fall inside a region around the inverse parabola-shaped universal scaling function of the relativistic Fermi gas. This suggests a method to select the subset of data that highlight the quasielastic region, about two thirds of the total 2,500 data. Regardless of the momentum and energy transfer, this method automatically excludes the data that are not dominated by the quasielastic process. The resulting band of data reflects deviations from the perfect universality, and can be used to characterize experimentally the quasielastic peak, despite the manifest scaling violation. Moreover we show that the spread of the data around the scaling function can be interpreted as genuine fluctuations of the effective mass $M^* \equiv m^*_N/m_N \sim 0.8 \pm 0.1$. Applying the same procedure we transport the scaling quasielastic band into a theoretical prediction band for neutrino scattering cross section that is compatible with the recent measurements and slightly more accurate.

Weak Production of Strange Particles and $η$ Mesons off the Nucleon

The strange particle production induced by (anti)neutrino off nucleon has been studied for $|ΔS|=0$ and $|ΔS|=1$ channels. The reactions those we have considered are for the production of single kaon/antikaon, eta and associated particle production processes. We have developed a microscopical model based on the SU(3) chiral Lagrangian. The basic parameters of the model are $f_π$, the pion decay constant, Cabibbo angle, the proton and neutron magnetic moments and the axial vector coupling constants for the baryons octet. For antikaon production we have also included $Σ^*$(1385) resonance and for eta production $S_{11}$(1535) and $S_{11}$(1650) resonances are included.

Angular distribution in two-particle emission induced by neutrinos and electrons

The angular distribution of the phase space arising in two-particle emission reactions induced by electrons and neutrinos is computed in the laboratory (Lab) system by boosting the isotropic distribution in the center of mass (CM) system used in Monte Carlo generators. The Lab distribution has a singularity for some angular values, coming from the Jacobian of the angular transformation between CM and Lab systems. We recover the formula we obtained in a previous calculation for the Lab angular distribution. This is in accordance with the Monte Carlo method used to generate two-particle events for neutrino scattering\cite{Sob12}. Inversely, by performing the transformation to the CM system, it can be shown that the phase-space function, which is proportional to the two particle-two hole (2p-2h) hadronic tensor for a constant current operator, can be computed analytically in the frozen nucleon approximation, if Pauli blocking is absent. The results in the CM frame confirm our previous work done using an alternative approach in the Lab frame. The possibilities of using this method to compute the hadronic tensor by a boost to the CM system are analyzed.

Nuclear medium effects in Drell-Yan process

We study nuclear medium effects in Drell-Yan processes at small target x using quark parton distribution functions and nucleon structure functions for a bound nucleon calculated in a microscopic nuclear model which takes into account the effect of Fermi motion, nuclear binding and nucleon correlations through a relativistic spectral function. The contributions of $π$ and $ρ$ mesons, target mass corrections and nuclear shadowing are also included. The results are compared with the theoretical and experimental results. The model is able to successfully explain the low target x results of E772 and E866 Drell-Yan experiments and is applicable to the forthcoming experimental analysis of E906 Sea Quest experiment at Fermi Lab.

Relativistic effects in two-particle emission for electron and neutrino reactions

Two-particle two-hole contributions to electroweak response functions are computed in a fully relativistic Fermi gas, assuming that the electroweak current matrix elements are independent of the kinematics. We analyze the genuine kinematical and relativistic effects before including a realistic meson-exchange current (MEC) operator. This allows one to study the mathematical properties of the non-trivial seven-dimensional integrals appearing in the calculation and to design an optimal numerical procedure to reduce the computation time. This is required for practical applications to CC neutrino scattering experiments, where an additional integral over the neutrino flux is performed. Finally we examine the viability of this model to compute the electroweak 2p-2h response functions.

Relativistic nuclear spectral function which incorporate Fermi motion, binding and nucleon correlations are used for the calculations. We also consider the pion and rho meson cloud contributions calculated from a microscopic model for meson-nucleus self-energies. Using these structure functions, $F_i^A/F_i^{proton}$ and $F_i^A/F_i^{deuteron}$(i=2,3, A=$^{12}C$, $^{16}O$, $CH$ and $H_{2}O$) are obtained.

Determination of $sin^{2}θ_W$ using $ν(\barν)$-Nucleus scattering

We have studied nonisoscalarity and medium effects in the extraction of weak mixing angle using Paschos and Wolfenstein relation in the iron nucleus. Paschos and Wolfenstein(PW) relation is valid for an isoscalar target. We have modified the PW relation for nonisoscalar target as well as incorporated the medium effects like Pauli blocking, Fermi motion, nuclear binding energy and pion rho cloud contributions. In our calculations we have used the relativistic nuclear spectral function which includes nucleon correlations. Finally local density approximation is applied to translate the numerical results to the finite nuclei. We have studied the dependence of $sin^{2}θ_W$ on Bjorken variables $x$ and $y$, four momentum transfer square ($Q^2$), energy of the neutrino and antineutrino, and effect of excess neutrons over protons in the nuclear target.

The calculations are performed for the iron nucleus. The results are discussed along with the experimental result inferred by NuTeV collaboration. The nuclear medium effects like Fermi motion, binding, shadowing and antishadowing corrections and pion and rho meson cloud contributions have been taken into account. Calculations have been performed in the local density approximation using a relativistic nuclear spectral function which includes nucleon correlations. These studies may be useful for the ongoing MINER$ν$A experiment as well as for the proposed NuSOnG experiment.

Two Particle-Hole Excitations in Charged Current Quasielastic Antineutrino--Nucleus Scattering

We evaluate the quasielastic and multinucleon contributions to the antineutrino nucleus scattering cross section and compare our results with the recent MiniBooNE data. We use a local Fermi gas model that includes RPA correlations and gets the multinucleon part from a systematic many body expansion of the $W$ boson selfenergy in the nuclear medium. Charged kaon production by coherent scattering of neutrinos and antineutrinos on nuclei

With the aim of achieving a better and more complete understanding of neutrino interactions with nuclear targets, the coherent production of charged kaons induced by neutrinos and antineutrinos is investigated in the energy range of some of the current neutrino experiments. We follow a microscopic approach which, at the nucleon level, incorporates the most important mechanisms allowed by the chiral symmetry breaking pattern of QCD. The distortion of the outgoing (anti)kaon is taken into account by solving the Klein-Gordon equation with realistic optical potentials. Angular and momentum distributions are studied, as well as the energy and nuclear dependence of the total cross section.

The possibility of observing these processes with the high luminosity beams available at TJNAF and Mainz is discussed, taking into account that the strangeness conserving electromagnetic reactions have a higher energy threshold for $\bar K (K)$ production. Neutrino Energy Reconstruction and the Shape of the CCQE-like Total Cross Section

We show that because of the multinucleon mechanism effects, the algorithm used to reconstruct the neutrino energy is not adequate when dealing with quasielastic-like events, and a distortion of the total flux unfolded cross section shape is produced. This amounts to a redistribution of strength from high to low energies, which gives rise to a sizable excess (deficit) of low (high) energy neutrinos. This distortion of the shape leads to a good description of the MiniBooNE unfolded CCQE-like cross sections published in Phys.Rev. D81 (2010) 092005. However, these changes in the shape are artifacts of the unfolding process that ignores multinucleon mechanisms.

Inclusive Charged--Current Neutrino--Nucleus Reactions

We present a model for weak CC induced nuclear reactions at energies of interest for current and future neutrino oscillation experiments. This model is a natural extension of the work of Refs.[1,2], where the QE contribution to the inclusive electron and neutrino scattering on nuclei was analyzed. The model is based on a systematic many body expansion of the gauge boson absorption modes that includes one, two and even three body mechanisms, as well as the excitation of Delta isobars. The whole scheme has no free parameters, besides those previously adjusted to the weak pion production off the nucleon cross sections in the deuteron, since all nuclear effects were set up in previous studies of photon, electron and pion interactions with nuclei. We have discussed at length the recent charged current quasi-elastic MiniBooNE cross section data, and showed that two nucleon knockout mechanisms are essential to describe these measurements.
