Hall effect evidence for an interplay between electronic correlations and Na order induced electronic bands topology in NaxCoO2

The incidence of topology on the band structure and physical properties of layered compounds has been extensively studied in semimetals. How those evolve in presence of electronic correlations has been less investigated so far. In the sodium cobaltates NaxCoO2 considered here, unexpected magnetic properties associated with correlations on the Co sites have been disclosed about 15 years ago. The distinct Na orders of the stable phases of these cobaltates have been shown to induce specific Co charge disproportionation with large size unit cells in the CoO2 planes, linked with the diverse magnetic behaviors. This provides an original playground in the studies of interplays between topology and correlations in these layered materials. We present here transport measurements on a series of single crystals and demonstrate that we do synthetize pure phases with quite reproducible transport properties. We show that above room T those display a similar behavior whatever the Na content. On the contrary we provide evidence for a great diversity in Hall effect low temperature dependences which underlines the specificities of the Fermi Surface reconstructions induced by the Na order. We study in some detail the difference between two metallic phases, one (x = 0.77) antiferromagnetic below TN = 22 K and the second (x = 2/3) paramagnetic down to T = 0. Both show a sign change in the Hall effect with decreasing T. We demonstrate that this can be attributed to quite distinct physical effects. For the x = 0.77 phase the negative Hall effect occurs in similar conditions to the anomalous Hall effect found in various magnetic metals. In the x = 2/3 phase have to be assigned to specificities of its Fermi surface. In both cases the anomalies detected in the Hall effect are certainly associated with the topology of their Co electronic bands.

The Spectral and Magnetic Properties of Er$^{3+}$ and Yb$^{3+}$ Ions in Y$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ Crystals with a Pyrochlore Structure

Cubic Y$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ single crystals doped with Er$^{3+}$ and Yb$^{3+}$ ions have been studied by the methods of electron spin resonance (ESR) and selective laser spectroscopy. ESR spectra exhibit signals from rare-earth ions that substitute for yttrium ions in sites with local trigonal symmetry. The $g$ tensor components are determined. The results of optical investigations indicate that impurity centers of several types are formed; the sublevel energies of the ground and excited multiplets of these centers are found. Among the great variety of detected optical centers, the centers that dominate in the formation of ESR spectra are discriminated. An analysis of the experimental data using the exchange-charge model have made it possible to determine the sets of parameters of the crystal field for Er$^{3+}$ and Yb$^{3+}$ ions substituting Y$^{3+}$ ions in regular crystallographic sites in pyrochlore Y$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$.

Origin of the electron disproportionation in the metallic sodium cobaltates

Recently the unusual metallic state with a substantially non-uniform distribution of a charge and mag\-ne\-tic density in CoO$_2$ planes was found experimentally in the Na$_x$CoO$_2$ compound with $x>0.6$. We have investigated an origin of such electron disproportionation in the lamellar sodium cobaltates by calculating the ion states as a function of a strength of the electron correlations in the $d$(Co)-shells within the GGA+U approximation for the system with a realistic crystal structure. It was found that the nonuniformity of spin and charge densities are induced by an ordering of the sodium cations and enhanced correlations. Two important magnetic states of cobalt lattice competing with each other at realistic values of the correlation parameter were found~---~low spin hexagons (LS) and higher spin kagomé lattice (HS-KSL). In the heterogeneous metallic HS-KSL phase magnetic Co ions form a kagomé structure. In LS phase the kagomé pattern is decomposed into hexagons and Co ions possess minimal values of their spin. Coexistence of these states could explain the emergence of the disproportionation with the peculiar kagomé structure experimentally revealed in previous studies of the cobaltates.

Complex magnetic differentiation of cobalts in Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ with 22K Néel temperature

Single crystals of sodium cobaltates Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ with $x \approx 0.8$ were grown by the floating zone technique. Using electrochemical Na de-intercalation method we reduced the sodium content in the as-grown crystals down to pure phase with 22 K Néel temperature and $x \approx 0.77$. The $^{59}$Co NMR study in the paramagnetic state of the $T_{N}=22$ K phase permitted us to evidence that at least 6 Co sites are differentiated. They could be separated by their magnetic behaviour into three types: a single site with cobalt close to non-magnetic Co$^{3+}$, two sites with the most magnetic cobalts in the system, and the remaining three sites displaying an intermediate behaviour. This unusual magnetic differentiation calls for more detailed NMR experiments on our well characterized samples.

Evolution of Co charge disproportionation with Na order in Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$

$^{59}$Co NMR experiments have been performed on single crystals of the layered cobaltate Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ with x=0.77 which is an antiferromagnet with Néel temperature $T_{N}=22$~K. In this metallic phase six Co sites are resolved in the NMR spectra, with distinct quadrupole frequencies $ν_{Q}$, magnetic shifts $K_{ZZ}$ and nuclear spin lattice relaxation rates $% 1/T_{1}$. Contrary to the $x=1/2$ or $x=2/3$ phases the 3D stacking of the Na planes is not perfect for $x=0.77$ but this does not influence markedly the electronic properties. We evidence that the magnetic and charge properties of the Co sites are highly correlated with each other as $K_{ZZ}$ and $(1/T_{1})^{1/2}$ scale linearly with $ν_{Q}$. The data analysis allows us to separate the contribution $ν_{Q}^{latt}$ of the ionic charges to $ν_{Q}$ from that $ν_{Q}^{el}$ due to the hole orbitals on the Co sites. We could extend coherently this analysis to all the known phases in the Na cobaltate phase diagram. The variation with $x$ of $ν_{Q}^{latt}$ is found to fit rather well numerical computations done in a point charge model. The second term $ν_{Q}^{el}$ allowed us to deduce the hole concentration on the cobalts. These detailed experimental results should stimulate theoretical calculations of the electronic structure involving both the Co orbital configurations and DMFT approaches to take into account the electronic correlations.

Na order and Co charge disproportionation in Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$

We have synthesized and characterized different stable phases of sodium cobaltates Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ with sodium content $0.65<x<0.80$. We demonstrate that $^{23}$Na NMR allows to determine the difference in the susceptibility of the phases and reveals the presence of Na order in each phase. $^{59}$Co NMR experiments give clear evidence that Co charge disproportionation is a dominant feature of Na cobaltates. Only a small fraction ($\approx$ 25%) of cobalts are in a non-magnetic Co$^{3+}$ charge state whereas electrons delocalize on the other cobalts. The magnetic and charge properties of the different Co sites are highly correlated with each other as their magnetic shift $K_{ZZ}$ scales linearly with their quadrupolar frequency $nu_Q$. This reflects the fact that the hole content on the Co orbitals varies from site to site. The unusual charge differentiation found in this system calls for better theoretical understanding of the incidence of the Na atomic order on the electronic structures of these compounds.

23Na NMR study of sodium order in NaxCoO2 with 22K Neel temperature

We report a systematic study of the $c$ lattice parameter in the Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ phases versus Na content $x>0.5$, in which sodium always displays ordered arrangements. This allows us to single out the first phase which exhibits an AF magnetic order at a Néel temperature $T_{N}=$22 K which is found to occur for $x\approx 0.77(1)$. Pure samples of this phase have been studied both as aligned powders and single crystals. They exhibit identical $^{23}$Na NMR spectra in which three sets of Na sites could be fully resolved, and are found to display $T$ dependencies of their NMR shifts which scale with each other. This allows us to establish that the $T$ variation of the shifts is due to the paramagnetism of the Co sites with formal charge state larger than 3$^{+}$. The existence of a sodium site with axial charge symmetry and the intensity ratio between the sets of $^{23}$Na lines permits us to reveal that the 2D structure of the Na order corresponds to 10 Na sites on top of a 13 Co sites unit cell, that is with $x=10/13\approx 0.77$. This structure fits with that determined from local density calculations and involves triangles of 3 Na sites located on top of Co sites (so called Na1 sites). The associated ordering of the Na vacancies is quite distinct from that found for $x<0.75$.

59Co NMR evidence for charge and orbital order in the kagome like structure of Na2/3CoO2

We report a complete set of $^{59}$Co NMR data taken on the $x=2/3$ phase of sodium cobaltates Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$, for which we have formerly established the in plane Na ordering and its three dimensional stacking from a combination of symmetry arguments taken from Na and Co NQR/NMR data. Here we resolve all the parameters of the Zeeman and quadrupolar Hamiltonians for all cobalt sites in the unit cell and report the temperature dependencies of the NMR shift and spin lattice relaxation $T_{1}$ data for these sites. We confirm that three non-magnetic Co$^{3+}$ (Co1) are in axially symmetric positions and that the doped holes are delocalized on the nine complementary magnetic cobalt sites (Co2) of the atomic unit cell. The moderately complicated atomic structure resumes then in a very simple electronic structure in which the electrons delocalize on the Co2 kagomé sublattice of the triangular lattice of Co sites. The observation of a single temperature dependence of the spin susceptibilities indicates that a single band picture applies, and that the magnetic properties are dominated by the static and dynamic electronic properties at the Co2 sites. We evidence that they display a strong in plane electronic anisotropy initially unexpected but which accords perfectly with an orbital ordering along the kagomé sublattice organization. These detailed data should now permit realistic calculations of the electronic properties of this compound in order to determine the incidence of electronic correlations.

Phase segregation in NaxCoO2 for large Na contents

We have investigated a set of sodium cobaltates (NaxCoO2) samples with various sodium content (0.67 \le x \le 0.75) using Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR). The four different stable phases and an intermediate one have been recognized. The NQR spectra of 59Co allowed us to clearly differentiate the pure phase samples which could be easily distinguished from multi-phase samples. Moreover, we have found that keeping samples at room temperature in contact with humid air leads to destruction of the phase purity and loss of sodium content. The high sodium content sample evolves progressively into a mixture of the detected stable phases until it reaches the x=2/3 composition which appears to be the most stable phase in this part of phase diagram.

Influence of charge order on the magnetic properties of Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ for $x>0.65$

We have synthesized and characterized the four different stable phases of Na ordered Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$, for $0.65<x\lesssim 0.75$. Above 100K they display similar Curie-Weiss spin susceptibilities as well as ferromagnetic $q=0$ spin fluctuations in the CoO$_{2}$ planes revealed respectively by $^{23}$Na NMR shift and spin lattice $T_{1}$ data. The Co disproportionate already above 300K into Co$^{3+}$ and $\approx $Co$^{3.5+}$ in all phases, which allows us to understand that magnetism is favoured. Below 100K the paramagnetic properties become quite distinct, and a 3D magnetic order sets in only for $x=0.75$, so that charge order has a subtle incidence on the low $T$ energy scales and transverse magnetic couplings.

59Co NMR study of the Co states in superconducting and anhydrous cobaltates

$^{59}$Co NMR spectra in oriented powders of Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}$ and in its hydrated superconducting phase (HSC) Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}$,1.3H$_{2}$O reveal a single electronic Co state with identical $T$ independent NMR shift tensor. These phases differ markedly from Na$_{0.7}$CoO$_{2}$, in which we resolve 3 types of Co sites. The large T variation of their spin susceptibilities $χ^{s}$ and the anisotropy of the orbital susceptibility $χ^{orb}$ allow us to conclude that charge disproportionation occurs, in a non magnetic Co$^{3+}$ and two magnetic sites with about 0.3 and 0.7 holes in the $t_{2g}$ multiplet. The data are consistent with those for the single Co site in the anhydrous and HSC phase assuming the expected Co$^{3.65+}$ charge.
