Isentropic perturbations of a chaotic domain

Three major properties of the chaotic dynamics of the standard map, namely, the measure μof the main connected chaotic domain, the maximum Lyapunov exponent L of the motion in this domain, and the dynamical entropy h = μL are studied as functions of the stochasticity parameter K. The perturbations of the domain due to emergence and disintegration of islands of stability, upon small variations of K, are considered in particular. By means of extensive numerical experiments, it is shown that these perturbations are isentropic (at least approximately). In other words, the dynamical entropy does not fluctuate, while local jumps in μand L are significant.

Lyapunov exponents in resonance multiplets

The problem of estimating the maximum Lyapunov exponents of the motion in a multiplet of interacting nonlinear resonances is considered for the case when the resonances have comparable strength. The corresponding theoretical approaches are considered for the multiplets of two, three, and infinitely many resonances (i.e., doublets, triplets, and "infinitets"). The analysis is based on the theory of separatrix and standard maps. A "multiplet separatrix map" is introduced, valid for description of the motion in the resonance multiplet under certain conditions. In numerical experiments it is shown that, at any given value of the adiabaticity parameter (which controls the degree of interaction/overlap of resonances in the multiplet), the value of the maximum Lyapunov exponent in the multiplet of equally-spaced equally-sized resonances is minimal in the doublet case and maximal in the infinitet case. This is consistent with the developed theory.

On the rotational dynamics of Prometheus and Pandora

Possible rotation states of two satellites of Saturn, Prometheus (S16) and Pandora (S17), are studied by means of numerical experiments. The attitude stability of all possible modes of synchronous rotation and the motion close to these modes is analyzed by means of computation of the Lyapunov spectra of the motion. The stability analysis confirms that the rotation of Prometheus and Pandora might be chaotic, though the possibility of regular behaviour is not excluded. For the both satellites, the attitude instability zones form series of concentric belts enclosing the main synchronous resonance center in the phase space sections. A hypothesis is put forward that these belts might form "barriers" for capturing the satellites in synchronous rotation. The satellites in chaotic rotation can mimic ordinary regular synchronous behaviour: they preserve preferred orientation for long periods of time, the largest axis of satellite's figure being directed approximately towards Saturn.

Symbolic computation of the Birkhoff normal form in the problem of stability of the triangular libration points

The problem of stability of the triangular libration points in the planar circular restricted three-body problem is considered. A software package, intended for normalization of autonomous Hamiltonian systems by means of computer algebra, is designed so that normalization problems of high analytical complexity could be solved. It is used to obtain the Birkhoff normal form of the Hamiltonian in the given problem. The normalization is carried out up to the 6th order of expansion of the Hamiltonian in the coordinates and momenta. Analytical expressions for the coefficients of the normal form of the 6th order are derived. Though intermediary expressions occupy gigabytes of the computer memory, the obtained coefficients of the normal form are compact enough for presentation in typographic format. The analogue of the Deprit formula for the stability criterion is derived in the 6th order of normalization. The obtained floating-point numerical values for the normal form coefficients and the stability criterion confirm the results by Markeev (1969) and Coppola and Rand (1989), while the obtained analytical and exact numeric expressions confirm the results by Meyer and Schmidt (1986) and Schmidt (1989). The given computational problem is solved without constructing a specialized algebraic processor, i.e., the designed computer algebra package has a broad field of applicability.

The rotation states predominant among the planetary satellites

On the basis of tidal despinning timescale arguments, Peale showed in 1977 that the majority of irregular satellites (with unknown rotation states) are expected to reside close to their initial (fast) rotation states. Here we investigate the problem of the current typical rotation states among all known satellites from a viewpoint of dynamical stability. We explore location of the known planetary satellites on the ($ω_0$, $e$) stability diagram, where $ω_0$ is an inertial parameter of a satellite and $e$ is its orbital eccentricity. We show that most of the satellites with unknown rotation states cannot rotate synchronously, because no stable synchronous 1:1 spin-orbit state exists for them. They rotate either much faster than synchronously (those tidally unevolved) or, what is much less probable, chaotically (tidally evolved objects or captured slow rotators).

Massive identification of asteroids in three-body resonances

An essential role in the asteroidal dynamics is played by the mean motion resonances. Two-body planet-asteroid resonances are widely known, due to the Kirkwood gaps. Besides, so-called three-body mean motion resonances exist, in which an asteroid and two planets participate. Identification of asteroids in three-body (namely, Jupiter-Saturn-asteroid) resonances was initially accomplished by D.Nesvorny and A.Morbidelli (1998), who, by means of visual analysis of the time behaviour of resonant arguments, found 255 asteroids to reside in such resonances. We develop specialized algorithms and software for massive automatic identification of asteroids in the three-body, as well as two-body, resonances of arbitrary order, by means of automatic analysis of the time behaviour of resonant arguments. In the computation of orbits, all essential perturbations are taken into account. We integrate the asteroidal orbits on the time interval of 100000 yr and identify main-belt asteroids in the three-body Jupiter-Saturn-asteroid resonances up to the 6th order inclusive, and in the two-body Jupiter-asteroid resonances up to the 9th order inclusive, in the set of ~250000 objects from the "Asteroids - Dynamic Site" (AstDyS) database. The percentages of resonant objects, including extrapolations for higher-order resonances, are determined. In particular, the observed fraction of pure-resonant asteroids (those exhibiting resonant libration on the whole interval of integration) in the three-body resonances up to the 6th order inclusive is approximately 0.9% of the whole set; and, using a higher-order extrapolation, the actual total fraction of pure-resonant asteroids in the three-body resonances of all orders is estimated as approximately 1.1% of the whole set.
