Tuning the critical temperature of cuprate superconductor films using self-assembled organic layers

Many of the electronic properties of high-temperature cuprate superconductors (HTSC) are strongly dependent on the number of charge carriers put into the CuO$_2$ planes (doping). Superconductivity appears over a dome-shaped region of the doping-temperature phase diagram. The highest critical temperature (Tc) is obtained for the so-called "optimum doping". The doping mechanism is usually chemical; it can be done by cationic substitution. This is the case, for example, in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ where La3+ is replaced by Sr2+ thus adding a hole to the CuO$_2$ planes. A similar effect is achieved by adding oxygen as in the case of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ where $δ$ represents the excess oxygen in the sample. In this paper we report on a different mechanism, one that enables the addition or removal of carriers from the surface of the HTSC. This method utilizes a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of polar molecules adsorbed on the cuprate surface. In the case of optically active molecules, the polarity of the SAM can be modulated by shining light on the coated surface. This results in a light-induced modulation of the superconducting phase transition of the sample. The ability to control the superconducting transition temperature with the use of SAMs makes these surfaces practical for various devices such as switches and detectors based on high-Tc superconductors.

Probing the surface states in Bi2Se3 using the Shubnikov-de Haas effect

Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations are observed in Bi2Se3 flakes with high carrier concentration and low bulk mobility. These oscillations probe the protected surface states and enable us to extract their carrier concentration, effective mass and Dingle temperature. The Fermi momentum obtained is in agreement with angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements performed on crystals from the same batch. We study the behavior of the Berry phase as a function of magnetic field. The standard theoretical considerations fail to explain the observed behavior.

Anomalous Enhancement of the Superconducting Transition Temperature in Electron-Doped Cuprate Heterostructures

The superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ of multilayers of electron-doped cuprates, composed of underdoped (or undoped) and overdoped La% $_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (LCCO) and Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (PCCO) thin films, is found to increase significantly with respect to the $T_{c}$ of the corresponding single-phase films. By investigating the critical current density of superlattices with different doping levels and layer thicknesses, we find that the $T_{c}$ enhancement is caused by a redistribution of charge over an anomalously large distance.

Single superconducting energy scale in electron-doped cuprate superconductor Pr_2-xCexCuO_4

The tunneling spectra of the electron-doped cuprate Pr_2-xCe_xCuO4 as a function of doping and temperature is reported. We find that the superconducting gap, delta, shows a BCS-like temperature dependence even for extremely low carrier concentrations (studied here for the first time). Moreover, delta follows the doping dependence of Tc, in strong contrast with tunneling studies of hole-doped cuprates. From our results we conclude that there is a single superconducting energy scale in the electron-doped cuprates.
