High-resolution Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Networks

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) [Goodfellow et al. 2014] convergence in a high-resolution setting with a computational constrain of GPU memory capacity has been beset with difficulty due to the known lack of convergence rate stability. In order to boost network convergence of DCGAN (Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Networks) [Radford et al. 2016] and achieve good-looking high-resolution results we propose a new layered network, HDCGAN, that incorporates current state-of-the-art techniques for this effect. Glasses, a mechanism to arbitrarily improve the final GAN generated results by enlarging the input size by a telescope ζ is also presented. A novel bias-free dataset, Curtó & Zarza, containing human faces from different ethnical groups in a wide variety of illumination conditions and image resolutions is introduced. Curtó is enhanced with HDCGAN synthetic images, thus being the first GAN augmented dataset of faces. We conduct extensive experiments on CelebA [Liu et al. 2015], CelebA-hq [Karras et al. 2018] and Curtó. HDCGAN is the current state-of-the-art in synthetic image generation on CelebA achieving a MS-SSIM of 0.1978 and a FRÉCHET Inception Distance of 8.44.

McKernel: A Library for Approximate Kernel Expansions in Log-linear Time

McKernel introduces a framework to use kernel approximates in the mini-batch setting with Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) as an alternative to Deep Learning. Based on Random Kitchen Sinks [Rahimi and Recht 2007], we provide a C++ library for Large-scale Machine Learning. It contains a CPU optimized implementation of the algorithm in [Le et al. 2013], that allows the computation of approximated kernel expansions in log-linear time. The algorithm requires to compute the product of matrices Walsh Hadamard. A cache friendly Fast Walsh Hadamard that achieves compelling speed and outperforms current state-of-the-art methods has been developed. McKernel establishes the foundation of a new architecture of learning that allows to obtain large-scale non-linear classification combining lightning kernel expansions and a linear classifier. It travails in the mini-batch setting working analogously to Neural Networks. We show the validity of our method through extensive experiments on MNIST and FASHION MNIST [Xiao et al. 2017].

Segmentation of Objects by Hashing

We propose a novel approach to address the problem of Simultaneous Detection and Segmentation introduced in [Hariharan et al 2014]. Using the hierarchical structures first presented in [Arbeláez et al 2011] we use an efficient and accurate procedure that exploits the feature information of the hierarchy using Locality Sensitive Hashing. We build on recent work that utilizes convolutional neural networks to detect bounding boxes in an image [Ren et al 2015] and then use the top similar hierarchical region that best fits each bounding box after hashing, we call this approach C&Z Segmentation. We then refine our final segmentation results by automatic hierarchical pruning. C&Z Segmentation introduces a train-free alternative to Hypercolumns [Hariharan et al 2015]. We conduct extensive experiments on PASCAL VOC 2012 segmentation dataset, showing that C&Z gives competitive state-of-the-art segmentations of objects.
