Improved Constraints on Sterile Neutrino Mixing from Disappearance Searches in the MINOS, MINOS+, Daya Bay, and Bugey-3 Experiments

Searches for electron antineutrino, muon neutrino, and muon antineutrino disappearance driven by sterile neutrino mixing have been carried out by the Daya Bay and MINOS+ collaborations. This Letter presents the combined results of these searches, along with exclusion results from the Bugey-3 reactor experiment, framed in a minimally extended four-neutrino scenario. Significantly improved constraints on the θμeθ_{μe} mixing angle are derived that constitute the most stringent limits to date over five orders of magnitude in the sterile mass-squared splitting Δm412Δm^2_{41}, excluding the 90% C.L. sterile-neutrino parameter space allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE observations at 90% CLs_s for Δm412<5 Δm^2_{41}<5\,eV2^2.Furthermore, the LSND and MiniBooNE 99% C.L. allowed regions are excluded at 99% CLs_s for Δm412Δm^2_{41} << 1.2 eV2^2.

Search for sterile neutrinos in MINOS and MINOS+ using a two-detector fit

A search for mixing between active neutrinos and light sterile neutrinos has been performed by looking for muon neutrino disappearance in two detectors at baselines of 1.04 km and 735 km, using a combined MINOS and MINOS+ exposure of 16.36×102016.36\times10^{20} protons-on-target. A simultaneous fit to the charged-current muon neutrino and neutral-current neutrino energy spectra in the two detectors yields no evidence for sterile neutrino mixing using a 3+1 model. The most stringent limit to date is set on the mixing parameter sin⁡2θ24\sin^2θ_{24} for most values of the sterile neutrino mass-splitting Δm412>10−4Δm^2_{41} > 10^{-4} eV2^2.

First measurement of electron neutrino appearance in NOvA

We report results from the first search for νμ→νeν_μ\toν_e transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to 2.74×10202.74\times10^{20} protons-on-target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of 0.99±0.110.99\pm0.11 (syst.) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a background of 1.07±0.141.07\pm0.14 (syst.). The 3.3σ3.3σ excess of events observed in the primary analysis disfavors 0.1π<δCP<0.5π0.1π< δ_{CP} < 0.5π in the inverted mass hierarchy at the 90% C.L.

First measurement of muon-neutrino disappearance in NOvA

This paper reports the first measurement using the NOvA detectors of νμν_μ disappearance in a νμν_μ beam. The analysis uses a 14 kton-equivalent exposure of 2.74×10202.74 \times 10^{20} protons-on-target from the Fermilab NuMI beam. Assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy, we measure Δm322=(2.52−0.18+0.20)×10−3Δm^{2}_{32}=(2.52^{+0.20}_{-0.18})\times 10^{-3} eV2^{2} and sin⁡2θ23\sin^2θ_{23} in the range 0.38-0.65, both at the 68% confidence level, with two statistically-degenerate best fit points at sin⁡2θ23=\sin^2θ_{23} = 0.43 and 0.60. Results for the inverted mass hierarchy are also presented.

Limits on Active to Sterile Neutrino Oscillations from Disappearance Searches in the MINOS, Daya Bay, and Bugey-3 Experiments

Searches for a light sterile neutrino have been performed independently by the MINOS and the Daya Bay experiments using the muon (anti)neutrino and electron antineutrino disappearance channels, respectively. In this Letter, results from both experiments are combined with those from the Bugey-3 reactor neutrino experiment to constrain oscillations into light sterile neutrinos. The three experiments are sensitive to complementary regions of parameter space, enabling the combined analysis to probe regions allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments in a minimally extended four-neutrino flavor framework. Stringent limits on sin⁡22θμe\sin^2 2θ_{μe} are set over 6 orders of magnitude in the sterile mass-squared splitting Δm412Δm^2_{41}. The sterile-neutrino mixing phase space allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments is excluded for Δm412<0.8Δm^2_{41} < 0.8 eV2^2 at 95% CLs_s.

Measurement of single π0π^0 production by coherent neutral-current νν Fe interactions in the MINOS Near Detector

Forward single π0π^0 production by coherent neutral-current interactions, νA→νAπ0ν\mathcal{A} \to ν\mathcal{A} π^0, is investigated using a 2.8×1020\times 10^{20} protons-on-target exposure of the MINOS Near Detector. For single-shower topologies, the event distribution in production angle exhibits a clear excess above the estimated background at very forward angles for visible energy in the range~1-8 GeV. Cross sections are obtained for the detector medium comprised of 80% iron and 20% carbon nuclei with ⟨A⟩=48\langle \mathcal{A} \rangle = 48, the highest-⟨A⟩\langle \mathcal{A} \rangle target used to date in the study of this coherent reaction. The total cross section for coherent neutral-current single-π0π^0 production initiated by the νμν_μ flux of the NuMI low-energy beam with mean (mode) EνE_ν of 4.9 GeV (3.0 GeV), is 77.6±5.0 (stat)−16.8+15.0 (syst)×10−40 cm2 per nucleus77.6\pm5.0\,(\text{stat}) ^{+15.0}_{-16.8}\,(\text{syst})\times10^{-40}\,\text{cm}^2~\text{per nucleus}. The results are in good agreement with predictions of the Berger-Sehgal model.

Measurement of the Multiple-Muon Charge Ratio in the MINOS Far Detector

The charge ratio, Rμ=Nμ+/Nμ−R_μ= N_{μ^+}/N_{μ^-}, for cosmogenic multiple-muon events observed at an under- ground depth of 2070 mwe has been measured using the magnetized MINOS Far Detector. The multiple-muon events, recorded nearly continuously from August 2003 until April 2012, comprise two independent data sets imaged with opposite magnetic field polarities, the comparison of which allows the systematic uncertainties of the measurement to be minimized. The multiple-muon charge ratio is determined to be Rμ=1.104±0.006 (stat.)−0.010+0.009 (syst.)R_μ= 1.104 \pm 0.006 {\rm \,(stat.)} ^{+0.009}_{-0.010} {\rm \,(syst.)} . This measurement complements previous determinations of single-muon and multiple-muon charge ratios at underground sites and serves to constrain models of cosmic ray interactions at TeV energies.

Search for Sterile Neutrinos Mixing with Muon Neutrinos in MINOS

We report results of a search for oscillations involving a light sterile neutrino over distances of 1.04 and 735 km735\,\mathrm{km} in a νμν_μ-dominated beam with a peak energy of 3 GeV3\,\mathrm{GeV}. The data, from an exposure of 10.56×1020 protons on target10.56\times 10^{20}\,\textrm{protons on target}, are analyzed using a phenomenological model with one sterile neutrino. We constrain the mixing parameters θ24θ_{24} and Δm412Δm^{2}_{41} and set limits on parameters of the four-dimensional Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix, ∣Uμ4∣2|U_{μ4}|^{2} and ∣Uτ4∣2|U_{τ4}|^{2}, under the assumption that mixing between νeν_{e} and νsν_{s} is negligible (∣Ue4∣2=0|U_{e4}|^{2}=0). No evidence for νμ→νsν_μ \to ν_{s} transitions is found and we set a world-leading limit on θ24θ_{24} for values of Δm412≲1 eV2Δm^{2}_{41} \lesssim 1\,\mathrm{eV}^{2}.

A Long Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiment Using J-PARC Neutrino Beam and Hyper-Kamiokande

Hyper-Kamiokande will be a next generation underground water Cherenkov detector with a total (fiducial) mass of 0.99 (0.56) million metric tons, approximately 20 (25) times larger than that of Super-Kamiokande. One of the main goals of Hyper-Kamiokande is the study of CPCP asymmetry in the lepton sector using accelerator neutrino and anti-neutrino beams. In this document, the physics potential of a long baseline neutrino experiment using the Hyper-Kamiokande detector and a neutrino beam from the J-PARC proton synchrotron is presented. The analysis has been updated from the previous Letter of Intent [K. Abe et al., arXiv:1109.3262 [hep-ex]], based on the experience gained from the ongoing T2K experiment. With a total exposure of 7.5 MW ×\times 107^7 sec integrated proton beam power (corresponding to 1.56×10221.56\times10^{22} protons on target with a 30 GeV proton beam) to a 2.52.5-degree off-axis neutrino beam produced by the J-PARC proton synchrotron, it is expected that the CPCP phase δCPδ_{CP} can be determined to better than 19 degrees for all possible values of δCPδ_{CP}, and CPCP violation can be established with a statistical significance of more than 3 σ3\,σ (5 σ5\,σ) for 7676% (5858%) of the δCPδ_{CP} parameter space.

Letter of Intent: The Accelerator Neutrino Neutron Interaction Experiment (ANNIE)

Neutron tagging in Gadolinium-doped water may play a significant role in reducing backgrounds from atmospheric neutrinos in next generation proton-decay searches using megaton-scale Water Cherenkov detectors. Similar techniques might also be useful in the detection of supernova neutrinos. Accurate determination of neutron tagging efficiencies will require a detailed understanding of the number of neutrons produced by neutrino interactions in water as a function of momentum transferred. We propose the Atmospheric Neutrino Neutron Interaction Experiment (ANNIE), designed to measure the neutron yield of atmospheric neutrino interactions in gadolinium-doped water. An innovative aspect of the ANNIE design is the use of precision timing to localize interaction vertices in the small fiducial volume of the detector. We propose to achieve this by using early production of LAPPDs (Large Area Picosecond Photodetectors). This experiment will be a first application of these devices demonstrating their feasibility for Water Cherenkov neutrino detectors.

Observation of seasonal variation of atmospheric multiple-muon events in the MINOS Near and Far Detectors

We report the first observation of seasonal modulations in the rates of cosmic ray multiple-muon events at two underground sites, the MINOS Near Detector with an overburden of 225 mwe, and the MINOS Far Detector site at 2100 mwe. At the deeper site, multiple-muon events with muons separated by more than 8 m exhibit a seasonal rate that peaks during the summer, similar to that of single-muon events. In contrast and unexpectedly, the rate of multiple-muon events with muons separated by less than 5-8 m, and the rate of multiple-muon events in the smaller, shallower Near Detector, exhibit a seasonal rate modulation that peaks in the winter.

Precision measurement of the speed of propagation of neutrinos using the MINOS detectors

We report a two-detector measurement of the propagation speed of neutrinos over a baseline of 734 km. The measurement was made with the NuMI beam at Fermilab between the near and far MINOS detectors. The fractional difference between the neutrino speed and the speed of light is determined to be (v/c−1)=(1.0±1.1)×10−6(v/c-1) = (1.0 \pm 1.1) \times 10^{-6}, consistent with relativistic neutrinos.

Combined analysis of νμν_μ disappearance and νμ→νeν_μ \rightarrow ν_{e} appearance in MINOS using accelerator and atmospheric neutrinos

We report on a new analysis of neutrino oscillations in MINOS using the complete set of accelerator and atmospheric data. The analysis combines the νμν_μ disappearance and νeν_{e} appearance data using the three-flavor formalism. We measure $|Δm^{2}_{32}|=[2.28-2.46]\times10^{-3}\mbox{\,eV}^{2}$ (68% C.L.) and sin⁡2θ23=0.35−0.65\sin^{2}θ_{23}=0.35-0.65 (90% C.L.) in the normal hierarchy, and $|Δm^{2}_{32}|=[2.32-2.53]\times10^{-3}\mbox{\,eV}^{2}$ (68% C.L.) and sin⁡2θ23=0.34−0.67\sin^{2}θ_{23}=0.34-0.67 (90% C.L.) in the inverted hierarchy. The data also constrain δCPδ_{CP}, the θ23θ_{23} octant degeneracy and the mass hierarchy; we disfavor 36% (11%) of this three-parameter space at 68% (90%) C.L.

Observation of muon intensity variations by season with the MINOS Near Detector

A sample of 1.53×\times109^{9} cosmic-ray-induced single muon events has been recorded at 225 meters-water-equivalent using the MINOS Near Detector. The underground muon rate is observed to be highly correlated with the effective atmospheric temperature. The coefficient αTα_{T}, relating the change in the muon rate to the change in the vertical effective temperature, is determined to be 0.428±\pm0.003(stat.)±\pm0.059(syst.). An alternative description is provided by the weighted effective temperature, introduced to account for the differences in the temperature profile and muon flux as a function of zenith angle. Using the latter estimation of temperature, the coefficient is determined to be 0.352±\pm0.003(stat.)±\pm0.046(syst.).

Study of quasielastic scattering using charged-current nu_mu-iron interactions in the MINOS Near Detector

Kinematic distributions from an inclusive sample of 1.41 x 10^6 charged-current nu_mu interactions on iron, obtained using the MINOS Near Detector exposed to a wide-band beam with peak flux at 3 GeV, are compared to a conventional treatment of neutrino scattering within a Fermi gas nucleus. Results are used to guide the selection of a subsample enriched in quasielastic nu_mu Fe interactions, containing an estimated 123,000 quasielastic events of incident energies 1 < E_nu < 8 GeV, with <E_nu> = 2.79 GeV. Four additional subsamples representing topological and kinematic sideband regions to quasielastic scattering are also selected for the purpose of evaluating backgrounds. Comparisons using subsample distributions in four-momentum transfer Q^2 show the Monte Carlo model to be inadequate at low Q^2. Its shortcomings are remedied via inclusion of a Q^2-dependent suppression function for baryon resonance production, developed from the data. A chi-square fit of the resulting Monte Carlo simulation to the shape of the Q^2 distribution for the quasielastic-enriched sample is carried out with the axial-vector mass M_A of the dipole axial-vector form factor of the neutron as a free parameter. The effective M_A which best describes the data is 1.23 +0.13/-0.09 (fit) +0.12/-0.15 (syst.) GeV.

Electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance in the full MINOS data sample

We report on νeν_e and νˉe\barν_e appearance in νμν_μ and νˉμ\barν_μ beams using the full MINOS data sample. The comparison of these νeν_e and νˉe\barν_e appearance data at a 735 km baseline with θ13θ_{13} measurements by reactor experiments probes δδ, the θ23θ_{23} octant degeneracy, and the mass hierarchy. This analysis is the first use of this technique and includes the first accelerator long-baseline search for νˉμ→νˉe\barν_μ\rightarrow\barν_e. Our data disfavor 31% (5%) of the three-parameter space defined by δδ, the octant of the θ23θ_{23}, and the mass hierarchy at the 68% (90%) C.L. We measure a value of 2sin2(2θ13)^2(2θ_{13})sin2(θ23)^2(θ_{23}) that is consistent with reactor experiments.

Measurement of Neutrino and Antineutrino Oscillations Using Beam and Atmospheric Data in MINOS

We report measurements of oscillation parameters from νmuν_{mu} and νˉμ\barν_μ disappearance using beam and atmospheric data from MINOS. The data comprise exposures of \unit[10.71×102010.71 \times 10^{20}]{protons on target (POT)} in the νμν_μ-dominated beam, $\unit[3.36\times10^{20}]{POT}}$ in the νˉμ\barν_μ-enhanced beam, and 37.88 kton-years of atmospheric neutrinos. Assuming identical νν and νˉ\barν oscillation parameters, we measure \mbox{$|Δm^2}| = \unit[2.41^{+0.09}_{-0.10}) \times 10^{-3}]{eV^{2}}$} and $\sin^{2}/!/left(2θ\right) = 0.950^{+0.035}_{-0.036}$. Allowing independent νν and νˉ\barν oscillations, we measure antineutrino parameters of $|Δ\bar{m}^2| = \unit[(2.50 ^{+0.23}_{-0.25}) \times 10^{-3}]{eV^{2}}$ and $\sin^{2}/!/left(2\barθ \right) = 0.97^{+0.03}_{-0.08}$, with minimal change to the neutrino parameters.
