Anticoncentration of random spanning trees in almost regular graphs

The celebrated formula of Otter \emph{[Ann. of Math. (2) 49 (1948), 583--599]} asserts that the complete graph contains exponentially many non-isomorphic spanning trees. In this paper, we show that every connected almost regular graph with sufficiently large degree already contains exponentially many non-isomorphic spanning trees. Indeed, we prove a stronger statement: for every fixed $n$-vertex tree $T$, $$ \Pr\bigl[\mathcal{T} \simeq_{\mathrm{iso}} T\bigr] = e^{-Ω(n)}, $$ where $\mathcal{T}$ is a uniformly random spanning tree of a connected $n$-vertex almost regular graph with sufficiently large degree. To prove this, we introduce a graph-theoretic variant of the classical balls--into--bins model, which may be of independent interest.

Machine Learning Based Multimodal Neuroimaging Genomics Dementia Score for Predicting Future Conversion to Alzheimer's Disease

Background: The increasing availability of databases containing both magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and genetic data allows researchers to utilize multimodal data to better understand the characteristics of dementia of Alzheimer's type (DAT). Objective: The goal of this study was to develop and analyze novel biomarkers that can help predict the development and progression of DAT. Methods: We used feature selection and ensemble learning classifier to develop an image/genotype-based DAT score that represents a subject's likelihood of developing DAT in the future. Three feature types were used: MRI only, genetic only, and combined multimodal data. We used a novel data stratification method to better represent different stages of DAT. Using a pre-defined 0.5 threshold on DAT scores, we predicted whether or not a subject would develop DAT in the future. Results: Our results on Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database showed that dementia scores using genetic data could better predict future DAT progression for currently normal control subjects (Accuracy=0.857) compared to MRI (Accuracy=0.143), while MRI can better characterize subjects with stable mild cognitive impairment (Accuracy=0.614) compared to genetics (Accuracy=0.356). Combining MRI and genetic data showed improved classification performance in the remaining stratified groups. Conclusion: MRI and genetic data can contribute to DAT prediction in different ways. MRI data reflects anatomical changes in the brain, while genetic data can detect the risk of DAT progression prior to the symptomatic onset. Combining information from multimodal data in the right way can improve prediction performance.

Modelling Agent-Skipping Attacks in Message Forwarding Protocols

Message forwarding protocols are protocols in which a chain of agents handles transmission of a message. Each agent forwards the received message to the next agent in the chain. For example, TLS middleboxes act as intermediary agents in TLS, adding functionality such as filtering or compressing data. In such protocols, an attacker may attempt to bypass one or more intermediary agents. Such an agent-skipping attack can the violate security requirements of the protocol. Using the multiset rewriting model in the symbolic setting, we construct a comprehensive framework of such path protocols. In particular, we introduce a set of security goals related to path integrity: the notion that a message faithfully travels through participants in the order intended by the initiating agent. We perform a security analysis of several such protocols, highlighting key attacks on modern protocols.

On 1-subdivisions of transitive tournaments

The oriented Ramsey number $\vec{r}(H)$ for an acyclic digraph $H$ is the minimum integer $n$ such that any $n$-vertex tournament contains a copy of $H$ as a subgraph. We prove that the $1$-subdivision of the $k$-vertex transitive tournament $H_k$ satisfies $\vec{r}(H_k)= O(k^2\log\log k)$. This is tight up to multiplicative $\log\log k$-term. We also show that if $T$ is an $n$-vertex tournament with $Δ^+(T)-δ^+(T)= O(n/k) - k^2$, then $T$ contains a $1$-subdivision of $\vec{K}_k$, a complete $k$-vertex digraph with all possible $k(k-1)$ arcs. This is also tight up to multiplicative constant.

Orbital Variational Adiabatic Hyperspherical Method Applied to Bose-Einstein Condensates

A variational basis set motivated by mean-field theory is utilized to describe the Bose-Einstein condensate within the adiabatic hyperspherical coordinate framework. The simplest single-orbital variant of this treatment reproduces many of the ground state properties predicted by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. But a multi-orbital improvement to the basis set yields a better representation of particle correlations and of the critical number where the condensate collapses for a negative two-body scattering length. The method also produces systematic deviations from Bogoliubov theory for the fundamental monopole excitation frequency.

Position Estimation of Robotic Mobile Nodes in Wireless Testbed using GENI

We present a low complexity experimental RF-based indoor localization system based on the collection and processing of WiFi RSSI signals and processing using a RSS-based multi-lateration algorithm to determine a robotic mobile node's location. We use a real indoor wireless testbed called w-iLab.t that is deployed in Zwijnaarde, Ghent, Belgium. One of the unique attributes of this testbed is that it provides tools and interfaces using Global Environment for Network Innovations (GENI) project to easily create reproducible wireless network experiments in a controlled environment. We provide a low complexity algorithm to estimate the location of the mobile robots in the indoor environment. In addition, we provide a comparison between some of our collected measurements with their corresponding location estimation and the actual robot location. The comparison shows an accuracy between 0.65 and 5 meters.

Coherent States of Alternating Current,

We study counting statistics of electric current pumped by pulses of an external field. The fluctuations depend on the pulse shape, and can be minimized by choosing the pulse shape properly. For an optimal pulse shape, the fluctuations are reduced to the {\it dc} level, i.e., they do not depend on the duty cycle of the signal. We develop an approach that allows to calculate all counting statistics for various driving fields, optimal and non-optimal. The statistics depend in an interesting way on the analytic structure of the field time dependence, and display an analogy with coherent states and instantons.
