Search for the deeply bound K−ppK^-pp state from the semi-inclusive forward-neutron spectrum in the in-flight K−K^- reaction on helium-3

An experiment to search for the K−ppK^-pp bound state was performed via the in-flight 3^3He(K−,n)K^-,n) reaction using 5.3 ×\times 10910^9 kaons at 1 GeV/cc at the J-PARC hadron experimental facility. In the semi-inclusive neutron missing-mass spectrum at θnlab=0∘θ_{n}^{lab}=0^\circ, no significant peak was observed in the region corresponding to K−ppK^-pp binding energy larger than 80 MeV, where a bump structure has been reported in the ΛpΛp final state in different reactions. Assuming the state to be isotropically decaying into ΛpΛp, mass-dependent upper limits on the production cross section were determined to be 30--180, 70--250, and 100--270 μμb/sr, for the natural widths of 20, 60, and 100 MeV, respectively, at 95\% confidence level.

Inclusive spectrum of the d(π+,K+)d(π^+, K^+) reaction at 1.69 GeV/c

We have measured an inclusive missing-mass spectrum of the d(π+,K+)d(π^+, K^+) reaction at the pion incident momentum of 1.69 GeV/cc at the laboratory scattering angles between 2∘^\circ and 16∘^\circ with the missing-mass resolution of 2.7 ±\pm 0.1 MeV/c2c^2 (FWHM) at the missing mass of 2.27 GeV/c2c^{2}. In this Letter, we first try to understand the spectrum as a simple quasi-free picture based on several known elementary cross sections, considering the neutron/proton Fermi motion in deuteron. While gross spectrum structures are well understood in this picture, we have observed two distinct deviations; one peculiar enhancement at 2.13 GeV/c2c^2 is due to the ΣNΣN cusp, and the other notable feature is a shift of a broad bump structure, mainly originating from hyperon resonance productions of Λ(1405)Λ(1405) and Σ(1385)+/0Σ(1385)^{+/0}, by about 22.4 ±\pm 0.4 (stat.) −1.7+2.7^{+2.7}_{-1.7} (syst.) MeV/c2c^2 toward the low-mass side, which is calculated in the kinematics of a proton at rest as the target.

Observation of the "K−ppK^-pp"-like structure in the d(π+,K+)d(π^+, K^+) reaction at 1.69 GeV/cc

We have observed a "K−ppK^-pp"-like structure in the d(π+,K+)d(π^+,K^+) reaction at 1.69 GeV/cc. In this reaction Λ(1405)Λ(1405) hyperon resonance is expected to be produced as a doorway to form the K−ppK^-pp through the Λ∗p→K−ppΛ^*p\rightarrow K^-pp process. However, most of the produced Λ(1405)Λ(1405)'s would escape from deuteron without secondary reactions. Therefore, coincidence of high-momentum (>> 250~MeV/cc) proton(s) in large emission angles (39∘<θlab.<122∘39^\circ<θ_{lab.}<122^\circ) was requested to enhance the signal-to-background ratio. A broad enhancement in the proton coincidence spectra are observed around the missing-mass of 2.27 GeV/c2c^2, which corresponds to the K−ppK^-pp binding energy of 95 −17+18^{+18}_{-17} (stat.) −21+30^{+30}_{-21} (syst.) MeV and the width of 162 −45+87^{+87}_{-45} (stat.) −78+66^{+66}_{-78} (syst.) MeV.

The K1.8BR spectrometer system at J-PARC

A new spectrometer system was designed and constructed at the secondary beam line K1.8BR in the hadron hall of J-PARC to investigate KˉN\bar K N interactions and Kˉ\bar K-nuclear bound systems. The spectrometer consists of a high precision beam line spectrometer, a liquid 3^3He/4^4He/D2_2 target system, a Cylindrical Detector System that surrounds the target to detect the decay particles from the target region, and a neutron time-of-flight counter array located ∼\sim15 m downstream from the target position. Details of the design, construction, and performance of the detector components are described.
