A Carleman-based numerical method for quasilinear elliptic equations with over-determined boundary data and applications

We propose a new iterative scheme to compute the numerical solution to an over-determined boundary value problem for a general quasilinear elliptic PDE. The main idea is to repeatedly solve its linearization by using the quasi-reversibility method with a suitable Carleman weight function. The presence of the Carleman weight function allows us to employ a Carleman estimate to prove the convergence of the sequence generated by the iterative scheme above to the desired solution. The convergence of the iteration is fast at an exponential rate without the need of an initial good guess. We apply this method to compute solutions to some general quasilinear elliptic equations and a large class of first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Numerical results are presented.

Differentiability of effective fronts in the continuous setting in two dimensions

We study the effective front associated with first-order front propagations in two dimensions ($n=2$) in the periodic setting with continuous coefficients. Our main result says that that the boundary of the effective front is differentiable at every irrational point. Equivalently, the stable norm associated with a continuous $\mathbb{Z}^2$-periodic Riemannian metric is differentiable at irrational points. This conclusion was obtained decades ago for smooth metrics ([3,5]). To the best of our knowledge, our result provides the first nontrivial property of the effective fronts in the continuous setting, which is the standard assumption in the PDE theory. Combining with the sufficiency result in [12], our result implies that for continuous coefficients, a polygon could be an effective front if and only if it is centrally symmetric with rational vertices and nonempty interior.

Optimal convergence rate for periodic homogenization of convex Hamilton-Jacobi equations

In this paper, we show that the rate of convergence in periodic homogenization of convex Hamilton-Jacobi equations is always $O(\varepsilon)$, which is optimal. This is a natural extension of a result concerning stable norms in metric geometry [4] that is essentially equivalent to the homogenization of convex static Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Another extremely interesting question in this direction is whether the $O(\varepsilon)$ rate holds in the nonconvex setting. We present a special nonconvex example with $O(\varepsilon)$ convergence rate, which relies on identifying the shape of the effective Hamiltonian and game theory interpretation formulas.

Remarks on optimal rates of convergence in periodic homogenization of linear elliptic equations in non-divergence form

We study and characterize the optimal rates of convergence in periodic homogenization of linear elliptic equations in non-divergence form. We obtain that the optimal rate of convergence is either $O(\varepsilon)$ or $O(\varepsilon^2)$ depending on the diffusion matrix $A$, source term $f$, and boundary data $g$. Moreover, we show that the set of diffusion matrices $A$ that give optimal rate $O(\varepsilon)$ is open and dense in the set of $C^{2,α}$ periodic, symmetric, and positive definite matrices, which means that generically, the optimal rate is $O(\varepsilon)$.

Numerical viscosity solutions to Hamilton-Jacobi equations via a Carleman estimate and the convexification method

We propose a globally convergent numerical method, called the convexification, to numerically compute the viscosity solution to first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations through the vanishing viscosity process where the viscosity parameter is a fixed small number. By convexification, we mean that we employ a suitable Carleman weight function to convexify the cost functional defined directly from the form of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation under consideration. The strict convexity of this functional is rigorously proved using a new Carleman estimate. We also prove that the unique minimizer of the this strictly convex functional can be reached by the gradient descent method. Moreover, we show that the minimizer well approximates the viscosity solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation as the noise contained in the boundary data tends to zero. Some interesting numerical illustrations are presented.

Coagulation-Fragmentation equations with multiplicative coagulation kernel and constant fragmentation kernel

We study a critical case of Coagulation-Fragmentation equations with multiplicative coagulation kernel and constant fragmentation kernel. Our method is based on the study of viscosity solutions to a new singular Hamilton-Jacobi equation, which results from applying the Bernstein transform to the original Coagulation-Fragmentation equation. Our results include wellposedness, regularity and long-time behaviors of viscosity solutions to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in certain regimes, which have implications to wellposedness and long-time behaviors of \emph{mass-conserving} solutions to the Coagulation-Fragmentation equation.

Selection problems in Large Deviations in Games under the logit choice protocol

We study large deviations in coordination games under the logit choice protocol. A major open question that [10,11] posed is whether large deviations properties under the small noise double limit and the large population double limit are identical or not. We rephrase this open question in the PDE language as some selection problems, and we provide some definitive answers to these problems.

The large time profile for Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman equations

Here, we study the large-time limit of viscosity solutions of the Cauchy problem for second-order Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman equations with convex Hamiltonians in the torus. This large-time limit solves the corresponding stationary problem, sometimes called the ergodic problem. This problem, however, has multiple viscosity solutions and, thus, a key question is which of these solutions is selected by the limit. Here, we provide a representation for the viscosity solution to the Cauchy problem in terms of generalized holonomic measures. Then, we use this representation to characterize the large-time limit in terms of the initial data and generalized Mather measures. In addition, we establish various results on generalized Mather measures and duality theorems that are of independent interest.

On the Langevin equation with variable friction

We study two asymptotic problems for the Langevin equation with variable friction coefficient. The first is the small mass asymptotic behavior, known as the Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation, of the Langevin equation with strictly positive variable friction. The second result is about the limiting behavior of the solution when the friction vanishes in regions of the domain. Previous works on this subject considered one dimensional settings with the conclusions based on explicit computations.

The Selection problem for discounted Hamilton-Jacobi equations: some non-convex cases

Here, we study the selection problem for the vanishing discount approximation of non-convex, first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations. While the selection problem is well understood for convex Hamiltonians, the selection problem for non-convex Hamiltonians has thus far not been studied. We begin our study by examining a generalized discounted Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Next, using an exponential transformation, we apply our methods to strictly quasi-convex and to some non-convex Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Finally, we examine a non-convex Hamiltonian with flat parts to which our results do not directly apply. In this case, we establish the convergence by a direct approach.

The vanishing discount problem and viscosity Mather measures. Part 1: the problem on a torus

We develop a variational approach to the vanishing discount problem for fully nonlinear, degenerate elliptic, partial differential equations. Under mild assumptions, we introduce viscosity Mather measures for such partial differential equations, which are natural extensions of the Mather measures. Using the viscosity Mather measures, we prove that the whole family of solutions $v^λ$ of the discount problem with the factor $λ>0$ converges to a solution of the ergodic problem as $λ\to 0$.

The vanishing discount problem and viscosity Mather measures. Part 2: boundary value problems

In arXiv:1603.01051 (Part 1 of this series), we have introduced a variational approach to studying the vanishing discount problem for fully nonlinear, degenerate elliptic, partial differential equations in a torus. We develop this approach further here to handle boundary value problems. In particular, we establish new representation formulas for solutions of discount problems, critical values, and use them to prove convergence results for the vanishing discount problems.

On asymptotic speed of solutions to level-set mean curvature flow equations with driving and source terms

We investigate a model equation in the crystal growth, which is described by a level-set mean curvature flow equation with driving and source terms. We establish the well-posedness of solutions, and study the asymptotic speed. Interestingly, a new type of nonlinear phenomena in terms of asymptotic speed of solutions appears, which is very sensitive to the shapes of source terms.

Some inverse problems in periodic homogenization of Hamilton-Jacobi equations

We look at the effective Hamiltonian $\bar H$ associated with the Hamiltonian $H(p,x)=H(p)+V(x)$ in the periodic homogenization theory. Our central goal is to understand the relation between $V$ and $\bar H$. We formulate some inverse problems concerning this relation. Such type of inverse problems are in general very challenging. In the paper, we discuss several special cases in both convex and nonconvex settings.

Selection problems for a discounted degenerate viscous Hamilton--Jacobi equation

We prove that the solution of the discounted approximation of a degenerate viscous Hamilton--Jacobi equation with convex Hamiltonians converges to that of the associated ergodic problem. We characterize the limit in terms of stochastic Mather measures by naturally using the nonlinear adjoint method, and deriving a commutation lemma. This convergence result was first achieved by Davini, Fathi, Iturriaga, and Zavidovique for the first order Hamilton--Jacobi equation.

A dynamical approach to the large-time behavior of solutions to weakly coupled systems of Hamilton--Jacobi equations

We investigate the large-time behavior of the value functions of the optimal control problems on the $n$-dimensional torus which appear in the dynamic programming for the system whose states are governed by random changes. From the point of view of the study on partial differential equations, it is equivalent to consider viscosity solutions of quasi-monotone weakly coupled systems of Hamilton--Jacobi equations. The large-time behavior of viscosity solutions of this problem has been recently studied by the authors and Camilli, Ley, Loreti, and Nguyen for some special cases, independently, but the general cases remain widely open. We establish a convergence result to asymptotic solutions as time goes to infinity under rather general assumptions by using dynamical properties of value functions.

Homogenization of weakly coupled systems of Hamilton--Jacobi equations with fast switching rates

We consider homogenization for weakly coupled systems of Hamilton--Jacobi equations with fast switching rates. The fast switching rate terms force the solutions converge to the same limit, which is a solution of the effective equation. We discover the appearance of the initial layers, which appear naturally when we consider the systems with different initial data and analyze them rigorously. In particular, we obtain matched asymptotic solutions of the systems and rate of convergence. We also investigate properties of the effective Hamiltonian of weakly coupled systems and show some examples which do not appear in the context of single equations.

Stochastic homogenization of viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations and applications

We present stochastic homogenization results for viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations using a new argument which is based only on the subadditive structure of maximal subsolutions (solutions of the "metric problem"). This permits us to give qualitative homogenization results under very general hypotheses: in particular, we treat non-uniformly coercive Hamiltonians which satisfy instead a weaker averaging condition. As an application, we derive a general quenched large deviations principle for diffusions in random environments and with absorbing random potentials.
